Czech Easter Traditions
Hello guys, as promised here are some Czech Easter traditions that I would like to share with you.
Tumblr media
Barvení vajíček (egg colouring)
Traditionally, in the Czech Republic, we colour or paint eggs for Easter. Very often, we use hard-boiled eggs, or less often (because it is harder to do) we use eggshells (this type of Easter egg is called kraslice). Kraslice takes more practice and because the eggshell is empty inside, it is much more fragile and more likely to break while painting. The hard-boiled Easter eggs are eaten afterwards, while kraslice serve as decoration.
There are multiple ways of colouring Easter eggs – you can buy a colour powder (and mix it with hot water and vinegar), you can paint the egg with wax, you can use natural ingredients for colouring (such as onion peels, blueberries or beets), and much more.
Here is a video showing the different methods of emptying an egg to make kraslice.
Here is a video showing the process of colouring eggs with onion peels.
Here is a video showing the process of colouring eggs with natural ingredients. It’s in Czech, but even if you don’t understand you can at least see the final result.
Here is a video showing how to decorate Easter eggs with wax.

Pletení pomlázky (braiding a whip made from pussywillow twigs)
Tumblr media
Another Czech tradition is pletení pomlázky, or in English: braiding a whip made from pussywillow twigs. Pomlázka is then used in a way that may be shocking to some of you.
Here is a video showing how to braid a pomlázka.
.
Koledování
Tumblr media
Traditionally, on the morning of Easter Monday boys and men go around the neighbourhood with their pomlázka and a basket, stop at every house, whip the female residents and then receive some goods in return. This process is called koledování. It’s kind of like Halloween in the USA, just weirder. Boys often recite a poem while whipping the girls, and the girls then offer them the already mentioned Easter eggs, chocolates and candy in return. Girls also put a ribbon on the boy’s pomlázka. Very often a shot of alcohol is offered to the adults. The meaning behind the whipping of the girls is for them to stay young and beautiful.
Is this tradition perceived as sexist and weird nowadays? I would say that by some people (mainly the younger generation) yes. I personally quite dislike this tradition, it’s weird and I find it to be quite humiliating. What changed in the last few decades is that in most cases not all the boys visit all the houses anymore, as naturally villages and towns grew bigger and not everyone knows everyone anymore. Now, you would only visit your family members, friends or people you know well. Still, this tradition remains quite shocking to most foreigners... and I don’t blame them. It should be also mentioned that the whipping should be gentle, and if the boy is not gentle then he’s an asshole, sorry not sorry.
Here is a Spanish (you can put English subtitles on) video talking about Czech Easter and you can see how koledování looks, you can also see some traditional Czech kroj or folk costume, which is quite cool.
Another video of koledování. Watching this video, I find this tradition so fucking weird, please don’t judge us ok? Czech people are actually quite normal.
A poem that the boys would say while whipping the girl:
Hody hody doprovody,
Dejte vejce malovaný,
Nedáte-li malovaný,
Dejte aspoň bílý,
Slepička vám snese jiný
Loose translation: Give me a coloured egg, if you don’t give me a coloured one, give me at least a white one, your hen will lay another one for you.
.
Polévání vodou (ice bucket challenge but make it Easter)
There is, however, an opportunity for the girls to get their revenge. Traditionally, after noon (so 12am) or on Tuesday morning, the girls would pour buckets of cold water on the boys. The meaning behind this is also to stay young. However, this part of the tradition is not very present in the Czech Republic, and I have personally never seen anyone doing this (at least not where I come from, I am sure there are some regions where this happens).
.
Velikonoční beránek (Easter lamb)
Tumblr media
A traditional sponge cake baked in a cake pan in the shape of a lamb. I think in the context of Easter it has a religious meaning, as Jesus is often called God’s lamb.
A baking video here.
.
Mazanec
Tumblr media
Sweet bread, round, often with almond flakes on top.
A baking video here.
.
No Easter egg hunt
It may come as a surprise to some of you, but the Easter egg hunt does not exist in the Czech Republic.
.
Decorations
For Easter, Czech families often decorate their homes. Typically we use colours representing spring such as yellow, green and pink. We make sure to have a lot of flowers at home such as daffodils, tulips or golden rain (laburnum anagyroides). You would also find a lot of bunny, chicken or lamb decorations, as these animals are closely tied with Easter and spring in the Czech Republic.
Tumblr media
.
This may be the longest post I have ever made in my life, so I hope you like it!
PS: I would like to point out that there are more Czech Easter traditions in the Czech Republic, I mentioned just a few (those that I find to be the most present and traditional), but of course as everywhere, each family’s traditions can be different. The traditions can also differ based on the location (Moravia has slightly different traditions than West Bohemia for example). So if you are a Czech person and don’t feel happy about the traditions I chose, feel free to correct me or add more.
Veselé Velikonoce!

hey, my first tag meme of the tumblr era! thanks for tagging me @little-brisk , I am in the mood to feed facts to the internet!
Last song: Two songs currently jockeying for post position in my head. One is That Pretty Christmas Carol I Always Forget to Look Up After it Plays, which it turns out is called “Personent hodie”--a couple weeks back I managed to run to the computer before the title disappeared from the playlist and then decided to learn it because if I can’t drag my friends to my choir’s winter concert this year I will damn well make my neighbors put up with my cutesy-church-Latin caroling instead. The other song stuck in my head is, unfortunately, “Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat.” From Cats.
Last movie: oh god the answer to this one is also Cats.
Currently watching: we are 24/7 sci-fi over here, my friends. We’ve just started the new series of The Expanse and, as ever, I would gladly lay down my life if I could only hear Her Excellency Chrisjen Avasarala utter one (1) swear in my presence. We’re keeping up with DSC each week, with dwindling but dogged faith. And when we run out of Expanse episodes we’ll probably jump back into re-watching season 3 of DS9 which...I know, I know, there’s so much good TV out there but sir this is my emotional support #kiradax.
Currently reading: Daytime reading is James Blish’s A Case of Conscience, part 6 in my arbitrary quest to read every Hugo award-winner in order. It’s about a Jesuit priest’s crisis of faith on a planet of lizard aliens, and it’s...well, I am not sure what else to say about that. Bedtime reading is Cal Flyn’s memoir Thicker than Water, impulse-bought on the strength of a thing she wrote about wolves in the Guardian a month or so back. I’m reserving judgment for now--she’s taken an tricky approach to a horrific topic (the revelation that her relative was responsible for the murder of hundreds of Indigenous Australians)--and while the prose is lovely it remains to be seen how she’s going to balance the personal narrative with the weight of this history of genocide and dispossession. Y’know, bedtime reading. Finally, “work” reading is Roberta Bivins’ Contagious Communities, a history of how postwar migration and the racialization of immigrant communities shaped the NHS, which I’d planned to gut for footnotes but got sucked into and I guess am reading cover-to-cover now.
Currently craving: other than a new vocation to replace my stupid fantasy of an academic career? Domino’s SG’s salted egg yolk pizza. Some of the best goddamn food I ever tasted in that city and what I’ve been missing all week is this garbage chain pizza with this trendy sauce. The heart wants what it wants.

One Piece swords
Tumblr media
Swords are the most widely used and widespread weapons in the One Piece universe. There are many and many different varieties. They are divided into two main categories, namely the Meito, legendary ⚔ sabers which are very well made, even excellent , and the others which are classic and of lower quality. The sabers in this second section don't even have a name. Apart from those mentioned in these two categories, there are also other sabers which have atypical shapes. This is particularly the case with the  Kiribachi (or Saw-lance) of Arlong the Saw or the Kirisame of the fish-man 🐟 Hody Jones . Note also that some pirates (Daz Bonez alias the Assassin, Kuzan alias Aokiji or the assassin Baby 5) and members of the Navy (Borsalino alias Admiral Kizaru) are able to create sabers or swords thanks to the powers of their Fruits of the Devil.
Types of sabers
In the One Piece series, there are several different types of swords with models varying according to the user and his personal choices. Katana
Tumblr media
First of all, there is the katana which is part of what is called the nihonto (Japanese sword) grouping all the bladed weapons designed according to a particular Japanese technique. Used by a large number of Samurai, the katana comes with a slightly curved blade with only one side being sharp. The blade of a katana measures at least twice as much as a shaku (old unit of measurement in Japan and which is still in use in traditional crafts such as the making of swords or bows 🏹) or more than 60 cm and can go up to 73 cm. Among the three swords of Roronoa Zoro, one is a renowned katana: the Wadô Ichimonji . In addition, the Vice-Admirals of the Navy also have katanas, Kogatana
Tumblr media
Then comes the Kogatana, which in French means "little saber" (or child sword). Indeed, the Kogatana is a small knife, a miniature version of the katana. Its length is that of the hand of an average person, like a small dagger. 🗡️ The Samurai generally uses it as a backup or reinforcement weapon during his clashes in addition to his katana. In One Piece, we find in particular Dracule Mihawk aka Hawk Eye, the Greatest Fencer in the World , who uses a Kogatana to fight against weak opponents. He also uses it to eat. Daito
Tumblr media
Daito is a generic term that refers more to a category of blades than to a specific weapon. Indeed, Daito literally means "Long sword" or "Great sword" and generally designates a long sword in opposition to a Shoto or a wakizachi (Small / short sword 🔪). Is considered a Daito any saber whose blade exceeds two shaku so more than 60 cm. The Katana is therefore considered a Daito. In addition, the three swords which are in the possession of Roronoa Zoro and which he uses for his Three Saber Technique or Santôryû are all recognized as being Daito. Nodachi
Tumblr media
Finally, there is the Nodachi which is a long sword to be wielded with both hands. If on the point of appearance it resembles a katana, the main difference is in its length. Indeed, a Nodachi is much longer than the katana and its size can reach up to 1.50 m. In addition, it is also much heavier, which is why it is more complicated to hold and requires the use of both hands. And, given its size and weight, this sword has a better slicing ability than the katana. A few people from One Piece have a Nodachi. This is particularly the case of the former Warden-Head of the Impel Down submarine prison, Shiryu (Shiliew of the Rain in the French version) and also of Charlotte Tablet who is part of the Big Mom's crew.Trafalgar D. Water Law, captain and doctor of the Heart Pirates, also has a Nodachi named Kikoku which he combines with the abilities of his Devil Fruit in his battles. You should know that Kikoku is considered a cursed blade and is part of the category of weapons called Meito.
Meito sabers
Tumblr media
Literally meaning "Excellent saber" or "Famous saber", Meito primarily refers to a kind of status for a saber. These are therefore renowned and excellent quality sabers. There are a total of 83 sabers in the world that have the status of Meito and they are divided into three sections according to their quality: - Les Saijo Ô Wazamono - Les Ô Wazamono - Les Ryo Wazamono Saiji Ô Wazamono
Tumblr media
This is the highest grade of all Meito and includes exactly 12 blades of exceptional quality. Indeed, the  Saijo Ô Wazamono have the best quality of blade that can be found in the world of One Piece. Their power and resistance are unmatched. To date, only four sabers of this category are known, namely: The  Kokuto Yoru (The black sword of the night) of Dracule Mihawk - The Kokuto Yoru (The Dark Saber of the Night) of Dracule Mihawk , one of the 7 Great Corsairs. It is a black saber having a length exceeding 2 meters. Forming a crucifix ✝️ with the blade, its guard has several jewels. This saber does not have a scabbard and Dracule Mihawk secures it to his back with thongs when he is not fighting with it. Its shape is similar to that of the two-handed version of the Messer (Großes Messer), a medieval weapon used for self-defense or in duels. - The  Murakumogiri belonging to  Edward Newgate, aka Whitebeard, the Strongest Man in the World . It is a Japanese weapon, a kind of halberd called Naginata and whose shape is similar to a fauchard (a war scythe). This sharp weapon reaches a length of 6.6 m. It has a gigantic curved blade attached securely to the long yellow and red striped handle. There is a spherical knob at the end of this sleeve. - Although we haven't seen him in the series yet, we know that the  Shodai Kitetsu is one of the 12 Saiji O Wazamono. Shodai literally meaning "First Generation", the Shodai Kitetsu is the very first sword designed by the legendary blacksmith of Wano, Kotetsu. Just like the other two Kitetsu swords designed afterwards, this one is also cursed 🤬 and can bring death to whoever possesses and wields it. Even if we don't know much about this saber, we can say that it is very resistant and has great powers due to the fact that it is one of the 12 Blades of the first rank. Ô Wazamono
Tumblr media
Of lower quality than the previous ones, the Ô Wazamono are nonetheless high quality sabers. Called in French the 21 Grandes Lames, they are more powerful and more resistant than the Ryo Wazamono. Of these 21 swords, only five have been revealed to us to date:
Tumblr media
- The Wado Ichimonji of Roronoa Zoro  belonged in the past to Kuina, her best friend from childhood. 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏼 Forged by Shimotsuki Kozabur of Wan Country, the hilt of this saber is immaculate white and its hilt is circular. The strength of his blade is such that he is the only blade that was not destroyed among the three sabers in Zoro's possession during his clash against Mihawk. The young Captain of the Navy Tashigi finds this magnificent blade and wants at all costs to seize it especially since she thinks that such a saber should not be in the possession of a pirate.
Tumblr media
- One of the cursed swords, the  Nidai Kitetsu is the second blade forged by Kotetsu (Nidai means Second Generation). This saber has a rather original appearance due to the fact that its hilt is in the form of a cross with the ends which are wider than the center. Unique 🌊 wavelet patterns can be distinguished on the blade. Not much is known about the powers of this blade, but given that it is part of O Wazamono, its power and resistance are not to be doubted.
Tumblr media
Shuusui, the Fall Water was the famous sword of Ryuma , a Samurai from Wano who became one of the Zombie Generals designed by Dr. Hogback for the former Captain Corsair Gecko Moria. After Ryuma's defeat, this sword was given to Zoro who later returned it to Wao Country to become a national treasure. This sword has a black blade displaying spike-like patterns and flower-shaped ridges 🌸 adorn its hilt. Even though Zoro considers this blade unwieldy, it is very tough. The Shuusui is said to be able to stop a rabid dinosaur that charges without sustaining damage or cracking.
Tumblr media
The Meito  Enma first belonged to Kozuki Oden, the Daimyo of Kuri in Wan Land., who used it in combination with another Meito, Ame no Habakiri. Kozuki Oden left it as an inheritance to his daughter Hiyori who then traded it to Zoro for the Shuusui. Also forged by the famous blacksmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo of Wano, this is the only katana to inflict a huge scar on Emperor Kaido at the hands of Oden with the Ame no Habakiri. Indeed, Enma is considered one of the best sabers in the world. According to Kozuki Hiyori, this blade is even worthy of replacing the famous Shuusui. And according to Tenguyama Hitetsu, himself a blacksmith and descendant of the legendary blacksmith Kotetsu, this sword can "slice to the depths of hell". This katana has a hilt in the shape of a clover 🍀 and a mauve-colored scabbard adorned with golden flowers. Once mastered, Enma offers its user extraordinary punching power. This was particularly the case with Oden when at eighteen, armed with Enma and Ame no Habakiri, he was able to cut out the mountain god in his own way. For that, he had hardened his blade with his Armament Haki. With these same two swords, Oden was also able to oppose theMurakumogiri from Yonkô Whitebeard who is a Saijo Ô Wazamono type naginata . The Meito Enma has the particularity of sucking a huge amount of Ryuo (Combative Fluid) from its user, which allows it to cut harder than normal. On the other hand, this particularity makes it very complicated to handle. This is also the reason why, before Zoro, Oden was the only one to have had the ability to master this sword. In Zoro's case, he accidentally sliced off an entire part of a cliff when he wanted to cut only a tree. 🌳 Enma had abused the hardening, which left Zoro's arm emaciated. However, Zoro was able to tame the blade by an excellent mastery of the Haki of Armament.. It is indeed possible to return the Haki sucked by the blade of this one towards his body. Otherwise, the swordsman will be emptied of all of his fluid and will end up with a dry body envelope.
Tumblr media
- Forged by Tenguyama Hitetsu and considered by him to be his masterpiece, the Meito Ame no Habakiri was the possession of Kozuki Oden as well as the Enma blade. Tenguyama Hitetsu described it as a blade capable of "cutting through the sky itself". If it was Kozuki Hiyori who received Enma, it was Kozuki Momonosuke, the son of Oden, who inherited Ame no Habakiri. This saber is identical to Enma, except for the color. Indeed, it is a white katana with a clover-shaped hilt with flower patterns. 💐 Just like Enma, this saber has incredible slash power when mastered. (See the previous section for more on what Oden was able to achieve when he used his two pair blades). Ryo Wazamono
Tumblr media
Even though they are lower class than  Saijo Ô Wazamono and Ô Wazamono, the 50 grade Ryo Wazamono blades are nonetheless good quality swords. They are also powerful and resilient blades. Of these 50 top quality blades, only five are known to us to date: - Yamaoroshi was previously owned by Billy the Slayer Orc , a pirate 🏴‍☠️ captain who faced the young Navy Captain Tashigi who easily defeated him. He was later captured by Navy officer Smoker the White Hunter. The sword was then recovered by Tashigi. This blade has yet to make an official appearance in the series to date, and not much is known about its powers as of yet. However, Billy prided himself on being able to slice an orca with this blade. - The Meito Kashu was previously owned by Mr. 11 , a former Agent of the Baroque Works criminal organization founded by Captain Corsaire Crocodile. 🐊 Much like the previous blade, Kashu ended up in Tashigi's hands after Tashigi defeated Mr. 11 in a duel. This saber has not yet been seen used in combat, which is why its true power is unknown. - Apart from the two aforementioned swords, the young Captain Tashigi also has another Ryo Wazamono class Meito, the katana named Shigure . The latter has a green sleeve and its guard consists of four petals (or blue square sides in the anime). As for the blade, it is rather classic. The Shigure has a well-crafted scabbard with a green, bumpy upper part while the lower half is smooth white in color. Although this saber has not been seen in action in combat, it is quite resilient as it was able to stop a cannonball 💣 and throw it in another direction. Tashigi was notably seen in the anime using this blade for a special technique:  Kiri Shigure (translated by Giboulée in the French version of the animated). The latter consists in slitting an enemy with his katana soaked in Combative Fluid. This technique allowed Tashigi to defeat the harpy woman Monet. Note that with the Yubashiri, the Meito Shigure is one of the two legendary swords to have been destroyed by a Devil Fruit. However, it was subsequently repaired.
Tumblr media
- The Yubashiri is similar to a Guntō , a Japanese sword designed for the Imperial Army and Navy in the Land of the Rising Sun 🌅 after the Samurai era in 1868. This black Meito with a yellow dot on the sleeve belonged to Zoro after qu 'he got it for free in Loguetown. Rather light but strong and complete, Zoro considered this blade to be a good katana since it was easy to wield. It allowed him to perform quick attacks and have good reflexes while having tremendous cutting power as well as excellent sharpness. Zoro used it in particular for his technique with three blades. Unfortunately, the Yubashiri was destroyed on Enies Lobby Island due to rusting caused by theCaptain of the Navy Tsû with the powers of his Devil Fruit, the Sabi Sabi no Mi  ( Fruit of the Rust in French). After replacing it with the Shuusui, Zoro buried the rest of the Yubashiri on the ship Thriller Bark. - The fifth in the list is the Sandai Kitetsu who was the third and final cursed sword in the Kitetsu series. (Sandai meaning Third Generation). Unlike the two elders of the series forged by Kotetsu, this one is the work of Tenguyama Hitetsu. Unusually in appearance, this Meito has a cross-shaped guard ❌ with wider parts at the end than in the center. Its blade displays unique wavy patterns. Zoro has owned it ever since he received it for free from the Loguetown gunsmith, Ippon-Matsu, who absolutely wanted to get rid of it. Indeed, given that it is one of the three cursed swords causing the death of its owners, Ippon-Matsu feared for his life and sold it for the modest price of 50,000 Berrys instead of its true value of 1. 000 000 Berrys. 🤑 After Zoro tested this curse on his own arm without it being sliced off, the

One Piece swords
Tumblr media
Swords are the most widely used and widespread weapons in the One Piece universe. There are many and many different varieties. They are divided into two main categories, namely the Meito, legendary ⚔️ sabers which are very well made, even excellent , and the others which are classic and of lower quality.
