Face Off
My first entry for the Hockey Fiction prompts. Sign-Up form for anyone who wants to join. It’s original hockey fiction written by fans who are at loose end with sports postponed.
For the prompt “Face Off” - The first time Sophie and Elsa meet at the Zurich U-Tourney:
At fourteen, Sophie’s the youngest player on the U-16 team, both for her team, Canada, and of all of the other teams at the international tournament. She learned her protests that she’s fourteen and a half only distanced her more from her teammates.
She can’t help the headlines which follow her. The only girl to do this. The youngest ever to do that. She loves hockey, and she won’t play down to appease her critics. She’ll set even more records, make an even bigger splash until they acknowledge she’s good. And not good for a girl or good for her age, just good.
No, the best.
If you’re not the best, you don’t get to play.
Tonight, she heads to the cafeteria on her own. Her teammates are watching a movie, giggling over actors Sophie pretends to recognize so she doesn’t have to explain, again, that no, seriously, she hasn’t seen this show. She has practice, class, more practice, homework, and then she falls asleep so she can do the same thing in the morning. They look at her with pity and don’t understand she doesn’t want anything else. A fresh sheet of ice, a stick in her hands, and she’ll be happy forever.
The cafeteria reminds her of Chilton Academy, trays stacked at the entrance and a long procession through various stations. She ends up in line behind a girl in a blue tracksuit and realizes too late what the three gold crowns on the sleeve mean.
The girl turns and smiles at Sophie, waving her free hand for emphasis. She’s tall and gangly, long arms and even longer legs. Sophie’s seen enough tape to know she’s standing with Elsa Nyberg, Sweden’s rising star. She’s fast and skilled and her reach makes it difficult to take the puck from her.
Sophie waves back with less enthusiasm, because they play each other the day after tomorrow. Elsa isn’t the 1C for the U-16 team, but still, there’s a high chance they’ll take at least once faceoff against each other. Sophie can’t afford to show weakness, even here in the cafeteria line.
Elsa, unbothered by Sophie’s hesitancy, points at the squash, an orange-brown mush and makes a face, crossing her eyes and sticking out her tongue. Sophie giggles before she can help it. She slaps a hand over her mouth, but it’s too late. Elsa’s noticed, and she beams even brighter for having Sophie’s attention.
The older girl points to the meatloaf next and gives Sophie an expectant look. Sophie looks around and, once she’s sure no one’s watching, scrunches up her face and shakes her head. Elsa laughs and drags Sophie down the counter until they reach something which looks more appetizing.

Fredrik Backman has given us another great story with Us Against You. This is the sequel to Beartown (my favorite read last year) The town is still realing. And now the council wants to get rid of the Beartown hockey team. And Maya doesn’t know if she can ever touch anyone again. And Benji’s secret is out there. What does the Pack really mean to Beartown? And tragedy-so much tragedy. Hockey 🏒 is the driving passion in this book, but Backman uses it to remind us of ourselves. How a couple can drift apart...how everyone wants someone to believe in them...what it means to be family. Backman is a combination of Jan Karon/Pat Conroy but Swedish. Sentences of just a few words...but so much impact. Thank you FB for another fantastic read. “Everyone gets a stick. Two nets. Two teams. Us against you.” #usagainstyou #fredrikbackman #beartown #hockeyfiction #bookstagram #bookshelf #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookreview #bookclub #novel #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookcover #bookhaul #bibliophile #goodreads #homelibrary #bradslibrary #fiction #contemporaryfiction #😭😭😭
