The stage directions of this translation are an absolute joy, easily one of the best things if not straight up my favourite thing in this edition. At times I want to bite them off the text and drink them like marrow ("But this speech, rendered rapidly and unrhetorically, is a kind of handkerchief").
#The way the directions play with the text itself without of course quite touching it is so interesting#They dance on the line of interaction with the text without quite falling on it#and are so full of character they gain some spirit themselves#and thus in that spirited almost interaction they seem to be so aware of the text that it renders them at times#as if conscious of themselves (in a way basic stage directions aren't) in what grazes the air of a character's aside#There is a sort of liminality in the way they work with the text with and without being entirely text‚#adding beyond what stage directions add something that can be only read‚#and having some aesthetic and literary value for themselves I'd say#They remind me a bit‚ although not as exaggeratedly of course‚ of the notes in Oscar Wilde's 'An ideal husband' or the ones of Valle Inclán#This is making my desire to collect translations of this play even more intense. But I'm trying to restrain myself#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later#Cyrano de Bergerac#Oh‚ and his verse sounds very English I feel. More natural sounding often I think than the other translations?#More like what an actual English text would sound#But I'm not native so I don't want to say for sure#Hmm more Wilde than Valle Inclán
