Viking Love Pairs: New Insights into Sexual Diversity in the Viking Age
In recent years, several Viking graves have been discovered throughout Europe where two men are found hand in hand. These findings have sparked a new debate about the sexual orientation of the Vikings.
The initial discoveries of this nature were made in the 1990s. In a grave near the Swedish town of Birka, skeletons of two men were found touching shoulders. These men, aged between 25 and 30, were equipped with weapons and jewelry indicating their high social status.
Subsequent years revealed additional discoveries, including:
2001: A grave in Norway where two men were found hand in hand. These men, aged between 20 and 30, were dressed similarly. 2002: A grave in Sweden where two men were found hand in hand. These men, aged between 30 and 40, held a sword hilt in hand. 2014: A grave in Denmark where two men were found hand in hand. These men, aged between 25 and 30, had a gold neck ring. The interpretation of these findings is not conclusive. Some scholars believe they constitute evidence of Viking homosexuality, while others argue that the men were simply friends or relatives showing unity in their final resting place.
It is crucial to note that there was no clear definition of homosexuality in the Viking Age. Viking society was complex, with a variety of sexual norms. The relationship between the men in these graves might have been perceived as platonic or romantic. Regardless of interpretation, the discoveries of Viking graves with two men holding hands are significant. They demonstrate that homosexuality was not unknown during the Viking Age, contributing to a broader understanding of historical sexual diversity.
Viking sexual norms were intricate and diverse, lacking uniform rules or regulations and varying based on region and social class.
Homosexuality was not prohibited or condemned in the Viking Age. There are indications that, in some cases, it was accepted and even celebrated. The aforementioned discoveries of Viking graves with two men hand in hand serve as examples, suggesting that homosexual relationships were acceptable for at least some Viking men. Literary references also point to homosexual relationships, such as the Icelandic Saga of Egil Skallagrimsson, which narrates that Egil, the saga's hero, had a homosexual relationship with another man.
The discoveries and literary references indicate that homosexuality was at least acceptable for some Viking men. However, it is essential to recognize the absence of a uniform definition of homosexuality in the Viking Age, with sexual norms varying based on region and social class.

Strange Things Found Around the World Strange Things Found Around the World Our first stop is one of the coldest, most remote places on Earth - Antarctica. Beneath its endless white sheets of ice lies a blood-red waterfall pouring out from Taylor Glacier. But don’t worry, it’s not actual blood. Scientists discovered that the water is rich in iron and oxidizes when exposed to air, creating the crimson flow. Still, it looks like something straight out of a horror movie! Roman Oyster Processing Site Discovered in Yorkshire
Tumblr media
The recent discovery of a Roman oyster processing site in Yorkshire has shed light on ancient culinary traditions. Unearthed during a major coastal re-alignment scheme, this finding highlights the Roman's sophisticated tastes and the historical significance of oysters in their diet.
The Remarkable Discovery
During the last three years, the Environment Agency has been working on re-aligning sea defences along the north bank of the Humber Estuary to create 250 hectares of new wet grasslands, salt marshes, and mudflats. This project aims to provide new habitats for wildlife and enhance flood protection for local communities. As part of this initiative, a series of archaeological excavations funded exploring the historical significance of this region. A team from York Archaeology uncovered what they believe to be a Roman oyster processing centre near an early Roman settlement. The site, located just south of Weeton, near Hull, contained large quantities of misshapen oyster shells. Large quantities of misshapen oyster shells were found, pointing to the oysters having grown naturally on a reef rather than being farmed. This suggests the area was likely a Roman processing site where they prepared oysters harvested from the Humber Estuary.

Roman oyster shells. Photo by Derby Museums Trust. Wikimedia.   The Roman Appetite for Oysters The Romans highly prized oysters, with some historical accounts suggesting oysters played a key part in Julius Caesar's decision to invade the British Isles. The Romans exported many of these oysters to Italy, with reports indicating that Roman Emperors valued them so highly they paid for them by their weight in gold.   Jennifer Morrison, Senior Archaeologist for the Environment Agency, remarked, “It was truly amazing to find the evidence of this early oyster processing site during our dig. We know that, at this time, oysters would have been plentiful and that they were a staple part of the diet." "British oysters were prized by the Romans, and it is quite possible that some of these oysters found their way back to Italy.”   Oysters: A Key to Modern Environmental Efforts Today, oysters are recognized for their environmental benefits, including their ability to filter water and improve marine ecosystems. Furthermore, as part of the Wilder Humber partnership, a collaboration between Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, and Orsted, efforts are underway to reintroduce native oysters to the Humber Estuary. In turn, these oysters help protect the coastline from erosion by stabilizing the seabed and absorbing wave energy. The project plans to reintroduce over half a million native oysters to the estuary by 2028, sourcing them from sustainable aquaculture and carefully reintroducing them to suitable areas. This initiative not only aims to restore marine biodiversity but also improve the estuary's resilience to climate change impacts like rising sea levels and storm surges.

This exhibition, organized by the Environment Agency and York Archaeology, showcases not only the archaeological artefacts but also provides insights into the ongoing work by the Environment Agency to re-align the sea defences and create vital wildlife habitats on the Humber estuary. The exhibition is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, offering visitors a chance to learn more about the Roman and medieval finds, as well as the environmental efforts to restore the Humber Estuary.
Importance of the Discovery
The discovery of the Roman oyster processing site offers a unique glimpse into the ancient Roman way of life and their sophisticated culinary preferences. It also underscores the historical continuity of oyster consumption and their environmental importance. This connection between historical and modern uses of oysters highlights the ongoing relevance of sustainable practices in preserving both cultural heritage and natural ecosystems.   Roman and Modern Oyster Processing Aspect Roman Times Modern Efforts Purpose Culinary delicacy, trade Environmental restoration, biodiversity Methods Natural reef harvesting, processing Sustainable aquaculture, reintroduction Historical Significance Valued by Roman Emperors Key species for marine ecosystem health Geographic Focus Humber Estuary Humber Estuary Archaeological Findings Processing site, misshapen shells Restoration projects, environmental impact   Final Thoughts The archaeological excavation funded by the Environment Agency has not only unearthed a significant Roman site but also linked historical practices to modern environmental efforts. The reintroduction of native oysters to the Humber Estuary reflects a blend of preserving historical heritage while promoting sustainable ecological practices. The continued exploration and understanding of these sites provide invaluable insights into both our past and future. Megalithic Constructions
Tumblr media
In the final phase of the Neolithic and the subsequent Eneolithic period, a remarkable development of megalithic constructions emerged, a term derived from the Greek ("mégas" for large and "lithòs" for stone). These imposing structures, largely dedicated to worship and collective burials, bear witness to the ingenuity and spirituality of ancient civilizations.
Menhir: Towering Monuments of Symbolic Meaning
Menhirs, derived from Breton ("men" for stone and "hir" for long), are tall monoliths driven into the ground, often marking burial sites. Their height, ranging from 2-3 meters to 6 meters, can reach extraordinary peaks, as highlighted by the Breton menhirs of Kerloas and Locmariaquer. These monoliths can be isolated or arranged in straight or circular alignments, often oriented in precise astronomical directions. In Carnac, Brittany, a complex of about 3000 menhirs extends in parallel rows, oriented westward, creating a captivating panorama over a kilometer long.
Dolmen: Innovative Trilithic System in Funerary Architecture
The dolmen, derived from Breton ("doul" or "tol" for table and "men" for stone), constitutes a form of funerary architecture. Composed of two or more stone blocks driven into the ground, surmounted by a horizontal slab, this trilithic construction system represents mankind's first use in this regard. The dolmen, primarily sepulchral, can be an individual or collective tomb, often characterized by an access corridor. Initially covered by stone or earth tumuli, the oldest dolmens in Italy are found in Sardinia, Apulia, and the Alpine region for the Copper Age.
Cromlech: Concentric Monuments of Astronomical Significance
Cromlechs, derived from Breton ("crom" for round and "lech" for stone), represent the monumental application of the trilithic system. These consist of series of dolmens arranged in concentric circular figures. Widespread in Neolithic and Eneolithic Europe, cromlechs originally served to define the lunar cycle, later adapting to indicate the movement of the Sun and the progression of seasons. In addition to their practical utility, these sites were spaces for collective ceremonies, including funeral, agricultural, and fertility rites.
Allée Couverte: Collective Funerary Constructions in France
Another application of the dolmen, particularly common in France, is the Allée couverte ("covered alley"). These collective funerary constructions are composed of stone slabs supported by vertical structures or dry-stone walls, sometimes reaching considerable dimensions. A notable example is the Allée couverte du Mougau, erected between the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Eneolithic, which stands out for the presence of engravings. The structure, 14 meters long, has a north-south orientation, with a northern entrance and a chamber at the southern end, likely preceded by a vestibule.
In Conclusion
Megalithic constructions bear witness to the rich cultural and religious landscape of ancient civilizations, offering a detailed look into how these communities conceived the world and the divine.
