I'm thinking abt cr!Tricks. And like, his arc. Overall his arc is akin to Caleb in a sense. Learning to heal from his past. But moreso for Tricks it's letting himself be loved and accepted into a new group, that he's wanted and if he has something clinging to him dragging him down? No one here is letting go. They won't let him be swept away.

In my head, his part in the campaign ends up that his past comes back to haunt him. Literally, as it turns out for some reason or another The Gentleman didn't totally wipe out that old group. And whispers of "a nasty thief, a coldblooder killer sweeping through town after town leaving a trail of blood" sweeps through tavern after tavern. And Tricks doesn't think much until someone says that "they say he's posing as a bard! He could be here..." and his stomach just drops.

And of course he reacts poorly. He immediately leaves. Grabs all his stuff even as one of tm9 try to stop him.

I think around this time too, somehow the letter he wrote so long ago about leaving tje group gets found. There's varied repsonses to it, but when the descriptions of this evil thief get closer and closer to Tricks... some of the party get antsy.

And so, when the party notices how distant Tricks has been, how jumpy, of course they think something is up. (Caleb hates this. He heard Tricks talk, he knows so much and he's trying to keep the party from doing something reckless.) When they corner Tricks it's worse. Tricks couldn't dream of hurting anyone in tm9 but in that moment it's like he's back in the back alleys taking the beating for a job gone bad. For losing a member of the party he never was a part of.

Everything about him screams "animal about to attack" as Beau demands answers and Tricks' fingers twitch and he's trying so hard not to react.

Until Caleb speaks up and puts himself in front of Tricks who just shrinks and starts to cry. Caleb knows. He knows Tricks is innocent. And he knows Tricks always dealt with wanting to leave.

The moment Caleb interveens, Jester follows. She never thought Tricks would hurt her. And then Nott, who looks to Caleb and says if he trusts him, he must be ok.

Eventually, Tricks (while still lying about some stuff) tells the party he had written thr note to protect them. "I--I can't- I made us lose Molly. I wasn't good enough for you guys. A bard just drags everyone down. I can't fight like Beau or Fjord. Or heal well enough. This blew up and-and-and- then, they'd find you guys and just for knowing me you'd be killed. I can't lose another party. I can't. I can't. It would be better if I left. You guys just forget about me."

That doesn't happen, though, of course. And tm9 promise Tricks he's wanted. He's always been, since he joined. And they'll solve this.

The sorta "end" of this would have Tricks grappling with the fact he never could have solved what happened to his old group. They were all meant to die that night. There's also new info about The Gentleman that's learned because someone found out Tricks "sold out his loyalty" to him. The party also learns a little more that Tricks never could say out loud

These shots of the Firelights attacking AMBESSA's people lead me to believe that the story may look like > Councillors listen to Ambessa > The tensions with Zaun escalate > Jinx terrorism instead of resolution > Vi sees this as failure and returns to Zaun to try another way > Ambessa doesn't take no for an answer > everyone teams up against Noxus, bringing Zaun and Piltover together again.

By hair alone we can see a timeskip here. Love Ekko's outfit. Vi's simpler style with just a bit of Piltie chest armour gives me hope that she transitions away from being a Piltie Enforcer and more of a Vander style character, trying to mediate.

My only criticism of this is that we now have 2 options: Either Vi is entering her goth era and is actively dyeing everything sloppily so that bits of Pink remain, or she has always been black haired, and has been dyeing her hair AND eyebrows pink her whole life, even as a child.

I get that it could be a cultural thing parents do, as my friend En suggested. I'd like this, if it weren't for the fact she was in stillwater for YEARS and I don't see them providing pink dye and a nice setup to bleach and dye safely...

I'm pretty amazed that we have seen Zero Mel and Zero Jayce, and just 2-3 frames of hinted Viktor. Nice to see he'll go through with the transformation, but I'm curious as to why they're keeping the jeyvik divorce era so out of promo. Some of my friends feeling very edged right now.

Wondering if this is baby Powder flashbacks, or if we're going to get little kids getting dyed blue in celebration as we see adults do when they team up with her. I suspect if this is a kiddo who wanted to be blue like Jinx, this will be used as a parrallel, with them being caught in an attack that harkens back to the bridge.

The visual effects look insanely gorgeous, and also Jinx's very bad time tm is always on the menu. Very exciting!

"Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while"; the vibes on this one are to me, the kind I would love to apply to a more introspective fic, or maybe something where canon diverges a bit in a dark way. Hurt/comfort isn't one of my more typical genres to write but I feel it could fit that quite well!

For Crit Role that would 100% be a Percy or Caleb fic for me. Those two are very easy to punish. I also get the sense it could fit very well for a Caleb/Lucien fic specifically in CR. Those two have the fucked vibes necessary to live up to the title. In terms of specific fic ideas, what came to mind was something related to Caleb's backstory: for those unfamiliar, canon involves a few incidents of dissociation related to it, so exploring that via a short fic (with that banger title) would work great. Especially regarding Caleb's feelings on it, since we don't get a ton in canon about how he feels about the dissociation specifically.

Weirdly, if I went the BNHA route, I would actually go for something Hawks-related, even if he's not as overtly an angsty character. Maybe some villain (or anti-hero) Hawks (a beloved fave trope of mine) for the flavour. There are just so many possibilities for this one; I may have to scrawl it down somewhere for future use <3

"Don't ask for help you're all alone"; My brain immediately went to the most literal interpretation of the title, aka one of those impeccable 'Character A is in trouble/hurt and (thinks) they can't ask for help from anyone.' Basic, but it fucks for a reason. Again, I have a litany of sad pathetic male characters to put in that situation. Or a nice little trope reversal would work as well!

I get strong Tomura vibes from this one: BNHA strikes again! Maybe something examining his leadership of the PLF, or even the weird fucky mind-state with him, AFO and etc. Another possibility is something for Crit Role, maybe Jester-centric, about the first few days outside Nicodranas. Seems either way, I end up writing angst for these prompts. Woops!

kai is the son of ray, leader of the anacondrai cult and arguably not the best parent. kai was raised sort of as a soldier for the cult, esp with his mother's amber element being passed onto him. nya's still here, just... don't worry about her for now. s4 starts with kai flirting with skylor (as he tends to do) and them getting to know each other before kai reveals he's the mole and ray's his dad. he and skylor have the normal s4 moment of "hey you're in a cult do you wanna break out of the cult" "sure" and they do, but kai has the staff for a little bit and its a bit fucky. after s4 ends, skylor sends kai to her dad so he can do something with his life now that he's out of the cult, and one thing leads to another and chen adopts him :)

jay is an ai created by ed and edna many years ago, designed to help out with all sorts of stuff. but he gets stuck in prime empire and becomes a sort of superstar there, a well-known celebrity that has eyes everywhere. essentially, if you also get stuck in prime empire (libber), you're being watched by a very maliciously playful ai with nowhere to go. he's still just as dangerous as canon unagami though, and his goal of escaping prime empire by sucking people in is the same. he's just a struggling child trying to find his way back to his parents :( which he does in the end so its ok

cole was garmadon's first child. garm never shied away from telling morro about him, but he does so very sadly. cole ran away from home because of canon reasons (mom died, dad was being not great about it, the usual) and was taken in by garm. he was promised the green ninja title but didn't manage to get it, which left him a brooding mess. since cole isn't really an angry person, his frustration was very subtle, and garm didn't know he was struggling with that that hard until he ran away. garmadon still waits for his son to come home, even if cole died on his search for answers.

zane was a sentry built during s3 to mimic cryptor's structure perfectly. he's a cold and cruel general that doesn't care for his army as people (since they're also nindroids. so). he ends up surviving the mass purge at the end of s3 just because i have so many thoughts about him and pixal being a power couple in s8 and being Terrifying to the ninja. other than that he's just kinda there lol

lloyd is the quiet one :D his backstory is the same as harumi's in canon, his parents died to the great devourer, he gets adopted by the royal family, and he plans vengeance on the ninja, specifically harumi, because they failed to protect his parents when wu saved the world. he worships wu to the point of bringing him back, as per usual, and is very silky smooth with his persuasion of harumi. kid's terrifying. he also loves snakes. a lot. not the serpentine specifically, but he has a Lot of snake imagery.

and nya ... i admit i don't have much for, other than she's in kalmaar's place. i know that she and maya vanished one day, leaving kai and ray alone on the island, searching for the storm and wave amulets to summon wojira so she can claim her rightful place as scourge of the land. maybe they found a way to h2o just add water themselves into becoming merlopians to infiltrate and rule, so the amulets were easier to grasp. nya's a girlboss though <3 kills someone (unsure yet if she kills her mom or trimaar, her backstory is still a wip)

- In this au we made, Alan lost his mom and his dad was a real machismo (mexican brand™️ toxic masculinity) piece of shit, and Matt lost his dad and his mom wasnt mean but she was just....neglectful and overworked to try and support her and Matt, and bc of that they both ended up becoming naughty hooligan children and thats how they met

- Alan fell in love with Matt really early on in their friendship but hes always been really good at pushing his true feelings down

- They fuck regularly as a fwb situation and Alans okay w it because well. Matt fucks a lot but Alan is the only person that Matt goes back to and as long as hes that person in Matts life then hes fine and hes secure

- Alans actually only ever fucked Matt in his life but he acts like hes a super slut bc he doesnt wanna seem clingy and like their fwb situation means more to him than it should

- Alfred and Alan are frat bro homies basically and they met cause Alfred got a part time job working at the mechanic shop that Alan works at

- Then...one day Alfred's brother Matthew transfers to the uni that hr and Matt go to and Alfred's like hey! I actually know this guy that I can set u up w bro! And he sets up a date bw Matthew and Matt

- Alan's shit is rocked and he is extremely jealous because Matthew made Matt smile the first day they met and it literally took Alan 3 yrs in their friendship to get Matt to smile at him and HES GRRR HE HATES HATES HATES KILL KILL MATTHEW

- Basically he can tell that Matt really likes him and he starts getting really obnoxious trying to get Matt to pay attention to him and spend all his time saving his ass after he picked wreckless fights and not be with Matthew, but eventually Matt starta seeing that Alans being even morr obnoxious and twerpish more than usual and he tells him to cut his shit out

- Alan gets really hurt and hes kinda alienated himself from everyone in his jealousy and no one wants to hang w him cause hes being even more unpleasant to be around than he normally is, but when Matt tells him to cut his shit out hes finally like. Well I see I'm not wanted here, fuck it I'm just gonna run away

- Alans always felt like disaplearing one day and he always used to tell Matt about it but Matt always blew it off as stupid shit hed say when they were high

- Then one day Matt gets a call from Alfred and hes super frantic cause Alan told him he was skipping town and as soon as Alfred says that Alans gone Matt just hangs up cause HE KNOWS ALAN WOULD BE THE IDIOT DIP SHIT TO JUST FUCKING LEAVE

- He goes to the apartment they shared and he sees basically everythings intact except a few clothes of Alans are gone and hes obviously not there and he starts freaking out and looking around the city for him

- Matts panicking looking for him till the last bus has left and hes lost all hope of finding him but he tries going to one more skate park in the city just to see if maaaaybe hes there, ajd in the distance he can see a silhouette sitting near the wall and his heart leaps out of his chest

- He goes towards the figure and its Alan sitting looking at the floor and messing with his board and he looks sad and upset. he hears footstels coming towards him and he can see its matts workboots and hes starts talking mad shit like pfft what arr you doing here shouldnt you be worshipping your fuckimg boyfriend? and hes trying to cover it up but its obvious hes sniffling

- finally matt stands in front of him and alan looks up and matt looks LIVID. hes PISSED. he looks like someones abt to die. hes so upset his hands are shaking. and alan gulps cause hes guilty as shit as matt pulls him up and hes preparing to get punched in the face or something but then...he looks matt in the eyes when hes finally pulled to stand up and matts eyes are watering, and matt realizes how terrified hes been feeling and this whole time hes been thinking abt how much he needs alan and he realizes how much he loves him fkr him to be reacting this way

- then matt kisses the life out of him and then pulls away to whisper "dont go." into his ear

- then they go back to the apartment and they have fuckies

- the next day alan shows up to alfreds place and hes like. we worked it out. and hes covered in hickies

Grimmer’s love for picnics was adopted from his wife. In general I tend to think that Grimmer’s “positive behaviours” - the things he does in the current day that are so utterly darling - are habits he picked up mostly from watching people, especially those he was “closest” to.

I had phrased this much nicer the first time before tumblr ate my words but….I tend to find the depth of Grimmer’s character much more interesting than the majority of Monster’s cast. Yes I acknowledge the complexity of Johan and what he represents and all of his and his sister and his mother’s story, but idk…Grimmer is a unique character type you don’t see much of. Yes you have lots of Sad Anime Dads and lots of characters with a fucky backstory but….not shown in the way we see Grimmer. This is someone who has suffered terribly and could have become like Roberto or even Johan. Instead we see someone fighting to discover himself and his emotions and coming into a sense of identity…and fighting to help others so they don’t endure the same as him…now that is interesting to me. Grimmer protagonist story when?

“Ok, but I had a Johnny first, and mine is better”: Adventures in Cyberpunk with a snarky headmate

Warning: this post contains considerable discussion of a major plot point in Cyberpunk 2077 which is discussed in the promotional materials (trailers etc) but which is not revealed in-game until after the first segment of the main story (the heist). Those who wish to remain unspoiled may instead view this lovely picture I edited of four raccoons in a trenchcoat (inspired by Critical Role’s playthrough of the absolutely delightful ttrpg Crash Pandas, which I highly encourage everybody in existence to go check out).

This phenomenal piece of art is surely the high point of this post. It can only go downhill from here.

Anyway.

So as we all know, Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released a few days ago to the expected amount of drama and fanfare, and my partner and I have been playing it together, by which I mean he’s been playing and I’ve been providing helpful advice like “We should totally buy the awesome purple car what do you mean you want a motorcycle THE MOTORCYCLE ISN’T PURPLE”. It’s not, y’know, an amazing game, but it’s pretty fun and I have already found multiple characters to ship V with, which I’m sure we can all agree is the truly important thing here. Plus of course there is abundant opportunity to make innuendo at my partner so I am a happy kitten. Mostly. There is one aspect of the story that is proving to be a continual source of awkwardness and general highly disconcerting aura. Namely, Johnny Silverhands.

At some point (I fell asleep for this part so I don’t know exactly what happened), you end up fused with a chip containing the personality of Johnny Silverhands, some kind of sort of famous dude who died a long time ago or something like that. awards self 10/10 stars for that eloquent and informative summary of important plot elements I was totally paying attention to and wasn’t asleep for at all anyway the important thing is there’s a dude hanging out in your brain with you. This is kind of weird and awkward for me, since I also have a dude hanging out in my brain with me. His name is Jonas. Jonas, say hi. J: I’m not a zoo animal and I don’t do tricks, also I reject the idea that this adds to the post in any real way. However you are very lucky because I am bored and complaining at you sounds more fun than going back to sleep. Now I’m tired and it’s 3:30 am go to bed or write the rest of this by your own damn self. That’s basically the same thing I guess.

Jonas is a bit weird. I don’t really have any idea what he is, and it’s not really within the scope of this blog post to discuss it in depth. He is some flavor of alternate personality, he is one of my closest friends, and he is a pain in the ass, much like most of my other friends. Having Jonas around is uncannily like V’s experience sharing their brain with Johnny Silverhands. Now I have a few other friends who have multiple personalities, one of whom is watching playthroughs of Cyberpunk and has appropriately described the experience as “pretty fucky”, which about sums it up. However it’s made even worse for me personally by the sheer number of similarities between Jonas and Johnny and their interactions with the people they share heads with, for (the most obvious) example, their names are really fucking similar. Jonas has matured a lot since he started appearing about 6-7 years ago but Johnny’s snark, unhelpfulness, complete disinterest in being nice, and even his body language all scream of Jonas’s original behavior, which, let’s be honest here, he still does all that anyway, he’s just nicer about it because he likes me. When Jonas and I talk, we tend to picture him as standing (or sitting or leaning against the wall or whatever) somewhere in the room with me, much as Johnny appears to V. He’s not active all the time and until very very recently was almost never “in charge”, so to speak, much like Johnny. So what we have here is somebody who acts a fuck of a lot like Jonas, has a similar name to Jonas, and interacts with their host in a manner that is almost a perfect match to how Jonas interacts with me. Somehow all of this went over my head. Then something even more uncanny happened.

Now, Jonas was originally an extremely minor character in a vast series of stories that I have made up in my head and never actually written down. He somehow evolved, without any conscious effort on my part, from a bit character who was never meant to do anything besides show up, get scolded by the authorities, and leave, to an increasingly major character, to living in my brain with me. Consequently, while he generally shares my tastes and preferences in terms of food and etc etc etc, there is an extremely major way in which we diverge: Jonas, like Johnny, and unlike me, smokes. All the time. It is Very Important to him. As such, the fact that I do not smoke and have exactly negative one billion interest in ever doing so is a source of intense frustration to him. We have had m a n y arguments about this. He knows not to push it too much and respects that it is my decision but that is not about to stop him from complaining about it loudly and with great passion. So when we encountered a scene of V and Johnny having the exact same fucking argument, ending with the incredibly blatantly Jonasesque lamentation from Johnny “Nonsmokers are the fucking worst”, it was like getting hit in the head with a brick. Actually forget the brick, it was like being hit with an entire building, and then having Jonas stick his head out the window and go “Missed me? ;)”, and then yelling back “WELL IDK BUT MAYBE NEXT TIME YOU’RE PILOTING AN ENTIRE FUCKING BUILDING IF YOU COULD TRY A LITTLE HARDER TO MISS ME THAT’D BE REALLY NICE THANKS” and then having him wink at me and assure me that head trauma builds character. It fucking doesn’t and he knows it.

After that, it was impossible to not see Jonas every time Johnny came onscreen. I still enjoy the game a lot. The setting and story are both really really cool and the loot is A+, and I really love being able to hang out in voice chat with my partner, who currently lives pretty far away, and do something fun together and experience something new. But having my relationship with Jonas, which I still have a lot of conflicting feelings about no matter how much I genuinely believe he’s a positive force in my life, reflected back at me at every turn, is bizarre, surreal, and a constant reminder of issues that have been nagging at me for a while, many of which are explicitly being brought up by the game itself. Last night we were doing a mission where V and Johnny at some point start talking and V mentions how they seem to be getting along better and Johnny suggests that maybe it’s because he’s rubbing off on V. V responds with something to the effect of “Am I becoming more like you, or are you becoming more like me?”. Jonas and I have been asking ourselves the same question for years. The only answer we were ever able to come up with is “probably both”, but the question of how much and to what extent, and if you start blending together with somebody else that much, are you really the same person anymore, and on down the rabbit hole we go, can really eat at you if you’re the kind of person who cares about that sort of thing. Which I guess we both are. And frankly we are probably not even half done with the main storyline and I doubt it’s going to stop posing these questions. 

J: so I said I wasn’t going to have any more of this and went off in a huff but actually I changed my mind I have some stuff to say. 

this is obviously weird for kitsie, and I guess it might be obviously weird for me too but it’s weird in an entirely different kinda way. it’s certainly surreal, and a lot of the questions it keeps bringing up are a lot to think about. Johnny is a program on a computer chip designed to be a copy of the original Johnny’s brain. this raises the question, and this may or may not be addressed later, how real is he? and is he the original Johnny, just on a computer chip now, or is he a different entity who happens to be identical to Johnny? and how is a person on a computer chip embedded on somebody’s brain really different from a person who’s a subroutine in somebody else’s brain? am I real? am I a part of Kitsie that just thinks differently for some reason? are we two facets of a whole being that’s kind of both of us and kind of neither of us? am I just a hitchhiker? I really don’t know. I have a lot of memories and backstory. things I did in the past, before I knew Kitsie. are those memories real? they feel real to me but on the other hand they didn’t actually happen. are Johnny’s memories real? they did happen but he’s a brain scan so did they actually happen to him? it’s a lot to think about, but hard to stop thinking.

and then there’s the other concern, which is that this is a game for kitsie to enjoy with her partner, and whenever this shit happens it wakes me up and I end up feeling really weird, like I’m intruding. which I am.  and as wonderful and understanding as he is, I’m still very much something he is getting used to and having problems adjusting to and I really understand because fuck I’m having a problem adjusting to me too. and maybe it’s stupid but I feel bad for being the disconcerting aura of uncomfortable thoughts wafting through something that’s supposed to be a pleasant and fun evening without me in it. which frankly sums up my entire existence. fuck this I’m tired I’m out of here again go tf to sleep kit.

I had more to say but “what he said” pretty much sums it up.

In conclusion, I don’t really have any objection to the story itself. It’s an interesting concept carried out fairly well that under normal circumstances I would think was really cool, and certainly it’s been a unique experience anyway. And I guess if anything the fact that it’s so unnervingly on the nose is a sign they did a good job? I’m still having a huge amount of fun with the game and the massive backlog of sidequests combined with our minimal ability to focus means that the main quest only takes up a small portion of our playtime in any case. I just needed to get all this shit off my chest.

Would you say this arc has been weak overall for BNHA? Everything seems kinda pointless to set up such a great hero only for him to be "shot down". Also neglecting several characters that were just introduced this arc.

I’m personally enjoying the arc so far tbh. But I can understand if others don’t. Hori has shifted his storytelling in this arc so it may have turned off a lot of readers who were already used to his usual style. Maybe he’s experimenting? idk

What changed in Hori’s style you may ask?

Slower pace overall, in terms of action

That…omniscient narrator (hit or miss, reminds most people of the narrator in HxH)

Going back and forth in the timeline is so fucky (it honestly confuses the hell outta me)

I think this is the longest arc we have so far

Anyway, as for the story itself, this arc is so long a lot of things happened it’s overwhelming. It may also be a reason why it’s harder to digest the stuff that’s happening. I had hoped there would be a break between meeting Overhaul and going after him (like, the story could shift back to school stuff for a few chapters before they pursue their plan to raid the Yakuza, for example) but Hori knows no breaks. lul

Introducing the Big 3 serves as a metric or a glimpse in what Deku can achieve in 2 years. I think it is important to make that distinction because in the end, this story is about Deku. Everything we’ve been reading relates to how Midoriya Izuku becomes the greatest Hero. Since we’ve been shown the highest power ceiling Izuku can feasibly achieve (All Might), it’s time to show a realistic expectation for Izuku’s power level in a few years (Mirio, a 3rd year student) as a sense of progression.

Now, the fact that Mirio is also presented as the original candidate for OFA, not only he’s the goal or target for Izuku’s potential power level up, he also becomes an “obstacle” that Izuku needs to overcome. Not in terms of power, because as we established, Izuku can’t realistically surpass Mirio right now, but in terms of self-confidence and desire to be Hero. Izuku needs to prove himself on how deserving he is to be chosen by All Might. Specifically to Nighteye.

Why Nighteye? Izuku had already told us (through narration) that his training under Nighteye will be a long and lengthy one. Suffice to say we’ll be seeing a lot of Nighteye from here on out. As we all also know, Nighteye still doesn’t acknowledge Izuku even at this point. He still believes Mirio is the rightful heir to the OFA.

Enter Mirio — and oh man, he’s now sufficiently “shot down” as you put it. This is why a lot of people are torn with this turn of the story, because these are 2 possible outcomes that people fear will happen (through knowledge of typical shounen tropes lol):

Mirio loses his Quirk permanently. Izuku feels guilt and gives up OFA to Mirio. Mirio will reject it. Essentially making Izuku “overcome” the “obstacle” easily since Mirio is now “weaker”. OR,

Mirio loses his Quirk permanently. Izuku doesn’t feel guilt. It doesn’t matter anyway, since Mirio is still weaker, therefore rendering the “obstacle” useless.

Essentially people hate that Izuku “won the challenge easily”. Nighteye is left to say, “Now that Mirio is Quirkless, I’m forced to acknowledge Izuku since there’s no other options literally”.

But here’s the thing — I don’t think that’s gonna happen. In fact, I think it would be opposite. Nighteye will pressure Izuku more to giving OFA to Mirio since he still believes Mirio to be better. Essentially, they’re now starting on the same level — being Quirkless — unless Izuku can prove himself to be better at being Hero than Mirio.

In any case, it all boils down to:

Nighteye is a man who knows All Might and his future, and as such, has high standards on who he views as deserving of OFA

Considering Nighteye’s high standard, he only has one he deems worthy, which is Mirio

The readers (us) needs to know why Nighteye views Mirio as the only one worthy. And with the last few chapters I believe all of us now understand right? 

Izuku, the main character, still needs to prove himself to Nighteye, who is his mentor now that All Might can’t do it anymore

Mirio lost his Quirk as a part of Izuku’s growth as a character. It was a necessary sacrifice (according to Horikoshi’s story)

I have no fucking idea how Horikoshi’s gonna pull off “Izuku proving himself to Nighteye” without a significant part of the fanbase getting mad, but we’ll see!! Just last week’s chapter there are people getting mad for “Izuku saving the day alone, whoopee-doo, he’s gonna save Mirio and Eri and take the credit, where the fuck are the Pro Heroes” and guess what, this week’s chapter revealed he was not alone and Aizawa and co. are actually with him 😂 Everybody loves to jump to conclusions.

As for neglecting characters, the only characters I think Hori failed to develop is Nejire and Ryukyu. Bubble Girl, Centipeder, etc. are all very minor characters so they’re not that important, along with the 8 Bullets like Rappa. Nejire and Ryukyu could be recurring characters though since they’re part of the good guys so there’s still hope for them. Fatgum too. But in the end, the most important characters are the people close to Izuku so it’s understandable why some don’t get too much focus.

(I don’t get Amajiki’s focus though, storytelling wise. Maybe his purpose is just to show us how awesome Mirio really is idk. Kirishima’s focus/backstory is also out there but oh well, it already happened.)

NieR: Automata Overview (I guess?)

This post will contain spoilers about NieR: Automata as I will be explaining the story, the characters and what happens in the game.

Let me start things off by saying I LOVED NieR: Automata. It was such a thrilling experience for me, it contained so many things I love about Japanese based stories. It has fun side characters, a solid set of main characters, and an absolutely bonkers story. I’ll try to develop on these things later on, but first, the world! The world of NieR: Automata is set in the year 11945, in a world where humanity has been put onto the edge of extinction from an alien race that brought with them an army of Machines with one motive, Destroy the Enemy. The humans were crushed, and the last remaining humans left earth, and settled on the moon, because why not.Where we play is an undisclosed ruins of a city that’s been long destroyed. We don’t know how long for, but it’s pretty destroyed. We play as Androids, human-like robots created by humans to fight back the Machine forces. The android base of the force YoRHa, a team the humans made to combat the machines, is just in between the moon and earth. It’s refered to the bunker, and has all the Android units, as well as the Operators and the Commander. The map on earth we play on is separated into segments: The City Ruins, which is the centre of the city, where most things take place, The Desert, I huge desert created next to the city as well of on some of the city, The Amusement Park, a big ol’ amusement park run by passive machines, The Forest Zone, a forest run by a kingdom of medieval styled machines, and The Flooded City, and area of the city... that makes the city a coastal one, I guess. The future is wild. Each of these zones have a vast number of side quests and hidden secrets that rewards your exploration. 

Next, the playable characters. You play as 3 androids at different plays through the game. The game has a total of 3 routes (A, B and C) with the 3 androids, as well as 2 extra story endings. Everyone knows who 2B is, she’s used as advertisement of the game, but has no real impact to the true ending of the game. She dies just as the real meat of the game goes on, and she is replaced with an rouge android called A2 (who is a much more well rounded an established character once you unlock some of her backstory elements). 9S is a character who becomes very interesting once the story picks up during route C. Although androids are not suppose to bring emotions to their work, his and 2Bs interactions during the route A and B causes him to fall in love with 2B. I honestly do not think their relationship is forced, as you see what each of them go through together, as a team. The death of 2B makes 9S determined to wipe out every last machine, as well as the person who murdered 2B, A2. What 9S doesn’t know, is that she was infected with a virus that destroys androids, and she asked A2 to kill her, and look after 9S. This creates an interesting dynamic between A2 and 9S, and the last fight of the game, you can chose to be either 9S or A2, and fight to the death. I won’t go into the ending too much as there’s a lot that needs explaining, that I can’t explain. All in all, 2B was there to sell copies, 9S and A2 are the two main characters of this game.

The side characters are interesting as well. Let’s start with the operators assigned to 2B and 9S during their operations on earth. 2B is a serious character who does her job, and does it well. She likes to keep things formal and to the rules. Her operator, 6O, is a lovable goofball. She’s awkward and cute, she talks about her personal life with 2B, how 6O’s crush turned her down and how she was so upset and come to 2B for advise. She hints constantly that she wants to see earth, and see it’s beauty, until 2B decides she’ll be nice and send her over some picture taken by 2B. 6O is too pure and we never learn her fate.. 9S’s operator is the opposite. 21O is much like 2B, and 9S’s is much like 6O. Although 21O is very serious, later in the story we find out her sensitive side, and how she longed for people to call her family. In route C we find out the virus outbreak that caused 2B to turn evil, as well as everyone else, has taken her find, and we’re forced to kill her, as 9S. The fight was very touching and broke my heart a little, as her dying words were “all I wanted was a family...”. NOW LETS TALK ABOUT PASCAL. Pascal is the leader of a village of machines that have broken away from the network that connects the machines, and are now good! Free to think of their own, the village have lived in peace and harmony with androids and the opposing machines. Pascal is a sweet machine who just wants peace in this world of war. When we reach the village for the first time everyone is holding out white flags, offering peace. Pascal puts all his time and effort in educating the villages children, and making sure relations with the androids stay strong. I will not spoil what happens to Pascal and the village as I genuinely think that you need to experience it yourself. It was the first time in a long time that a video game has made me cry. The next and final character is Anemone. She is the leader of the Android resistance that stay on earth permanently. Her back story ties in with A2′s, as they used to be part of a team. Once again, I won’t go too much into it as there’s a lot to cover. She’s cool, but is only really interesting when interacting with A2.

Now, to try and summarise the story that’ll make sense... 2B and 9S are sent on various missions to destroy Goliath-Class machines - major treats to The Android Resistance and YoRHa. Along the way, the encounter a human-like machine, created in front of them named Adam. They defeat Adam, and from the body of Adam, comes Eve! See the reference? These two become the antagonist for route A/B. They reveal later that the alien race that the androids have been trying to find and destroy have been dead for hundreds of years, killed by the machines. When 2B and 9S make their way into the Forest Zone, they storm the castle to fight the king of these machine knights, only to be greeted with a Machine Baby, in a cot. A2, out of nowhere, comes in and kills the baby king, before fighting 2B and 9S. She leaves, 2B and 9S bested. Who was that mysterious android? Fast forward, past another Goliath-Class machine, 9S has been sent rocketing to half way across the map due to the fight and 2B must find him. She finds a mysterious elevator that takes her to a place named the Copied City. Here, we find Adam, with 9S’s body on a make shift crucifix, and 2B must kill Adam to save him. RIP Adam, 9S is save, woohoo. Except Eve is pissed, like super pissed. He loved his brother and only saw revenge as an option. Fast Forward again, and we’re at the fight with Eve. Mustering all the power he has, he beats 2B and 9S to a pulp, but 9S, using his hacking ability (that I never explained he could do, sorry), hacked into Eve, and destroyed him. Bur doing so exposed him to the machine network, and he was infected with the virus. Much to 2B’s misfortune, she kills 9S, there and then. This is where I have a problem with the story. Because he was connected to the machine network, he could project himself into any of the other machine life forms, why? No clue. But he’s find now, and not infected! Wohoo! But oh boy, that was only half the story. Route C is when the madness starts, the entire bunker is infected with this virus, 2B and 9S have to fight their fellow androids to escape the Bunker, and when they land back to earth, the machines are back, and stronger than before. 2B is then infected by the virus, and finds a place to kill herself. She’s greeted by A2, and A2 agrees to kill her. But 9S sees A2 kill 2B, and thinks A2 killed her for no reason....... and that’s where I’ll leave it. I will not be able to do route C’s story justice by trying to explain what was going through Yoko Taro’s head. It get’s mind fucky, and it’s amazing.

Endings. You know how I said there were 3 routes and 2 extra endings (making that 5 story endings). Well there are 26 ‘endings’ to the game. All the other endings are silly and fun way the game could have ended. For example: What would happen if an android ate a fish? They die, horribly. That’s an ending. What happens if instead of helping 9S when he was captured by Adam, you just walked away? That’s an ending. Killed everyone in Pascals Village? Ending. Self destruct in the Bunker? Ending. There are so many fun way to end the game. It’s a nice touch.

There are so many more things I could talk about. A2′s and Anemone’s backstory. A character named Emil, who was in the first NieR game. One of the story endings to do with the endings credits. The very concept of existence and the meaning of one’s life portrayed by machines created by an alien race. The Gestalt program. The Machine King. SO MUCH. This game has so much story and has such an established lore before the events of the game, it’s amazing. I loved NieR: Automata, and I hope we get some DLC, and maybe after a couple years a new addition to the NieR franchise.
