Ok so, Les Mis fandom, hear me out. 

I was going through the list of upcoming Japanese dramas of the year, as one does, when I stumbled upon a scheduled special drama on January 9 in Fuji TV with the name “Les Miserables”. I hadn’t seen anything about this (maybe I missed it because we’re all so focused on BBC Les Mis?) but I though it would be either a dub of bbc les mis aired all together or a recording of the new staging with Park Romi as Madame Thenardier (how cool is that) and Hiroki Miura as Marius. Which sounds like it’s gonna be amazing, but it doesn’t open until April, so it made no sense. 

Turns out it’s neither. It’s a full on special on its own. 

Remember that one time Fox announced a modern day Les Mis where Valjean was a lawyer? This is a modern day Les Mis (kind of?) where Valjean is a lawyer, apparently. I don’t think the script writer was related to that project, so whether it was inspired or not, I don’t know, but it happened. And Valjean is Dean Fujioka. And Karina is in it. 

The plot sounds convoluted and weird af though, and if it wasn’t stated that it’s based on Les Mis I wouldn’t have got it, but here it is for you to read it yourselves, I’m gonna copy-paste what’s in that site I linked: 

Synopsis: One day in Kobe in the 1990s, news of the escape of a juvenile murderer from prison spreads around. Two years earlier, 17-year-old Baba Jun (Yoshizawa Ryo) got into a scuffle with Saito Futoshi (Terawaki Yasufumi), a self-serving man who had cheated his mother Yuko (Tomita Yasuko) of all her money, and killed Saito in self-defence. A high school drop-out, Jun worked hard at part-time jobs to earn money for surgery for his younger brother who suffered from biliary atresia. But he was slapped with criminal charges and thrown into a juvenile corrective institution. One day, Jun hears that his younger brother is in critical condition and breaks out. However, his brother is already dead. A despondent Jun tries to commit suicide but is saved by Tokuda Hiroaki (Okuda Eiji) who runs a self-support facility. He hides his identity and begins to live at the place. This is where he meets a youth Watanabe Takumi (Murakami Nijiro) who aspires to be a lawyer. There is another boy Saito Ryosuke, who is the only son of the man that Jun killed. Ryosuke had cut ties with his unscrupulous parents. But when it became known to the world that his father was killed for committing investment fraud, he was harassed by the media as if he was the assailant’s family even though he was supposed to be the victim’s family. Then the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake hit in 1995. This unprecedented natural disaster significantly changes the lives of the two boys. Some 10 years later, Jun (Dean Fujioka) has assumed Takumi’s identity. He opens a small lawyer’s office in a corner of Shinjuku in Tokyo and takes cases to defend the socially vulnerable. He also rehabilitates delinquent youth and provides free consultation to poor people. Ryosuke (Iura Arata) has become a detective with the Shinjuku Police Precinct’s Community Safety Division. He is in charge of many delinquent youth cases and is enforces strict control over them. One day, Ryosuke meets Takumi while cracking down on a brawl. The two men eventually develop a relationship of trust. However, Ryosuke finds out that this Takumi is his father’s murderer … …

I’m gonna assume that in this scenario, Baba Jun is obviously Valjean (I mean the name sounds close even) and Saito Ryosuke is Javert? Maybe this Takumi is kind of Fauchelevent-ish? I don’t even know, folks. It sounds very weird but I hadn’t heard about this so I thought I’d share in case anyone has seen anything about it to tell me what’s going on. Also, being a special, it’s a one episode thing, so it would be interesting to watch, but it wasn’t picked up by any fansub, so I guess it’s not gonna be around to watch easily, unless someone takes pity and picks it up. 

Anyway, I thought I’d share my amusement with you all. Maybe someone out there knows more about it than I do. And I fear I might be a bother but I’m gonna tag @pilferingapples because I thought the weird adaptation quality of it might be of interest.

Rouge Éclipse (Shiki Kawabata): du manga au drama

Ayumi Kohinata est une lycéenne dans la norme: elle a de bons résultats, elle est jolie, elle est bien intégrée au sein de sa classe et vient d’une famille unie et heureuse. Alors qu’elle se rend à un rendez-vous pour rejoindre son petit ami, Koshirô Mizumoto, elle reçoit un appel d’une camarade de classe. Au bout du fil, Zenko Uminé: elle va se suicider et Ayumi ferait mieux de ne pas la quitter des yeux. Paniquée, Ayumi n’a pas le temps d’intervenir avant que Zenko ne commette l’irréparable. Sous une mystérieuse lune écarlate, Ayumi se réveille dans la peau de Zenko Uminé. Ayumi est désormais moche, la risée de sa classe et se voit contrainte d’habiter un foyer chaotique. Malgré tout, Ayumi trouvera un allié dans son ami d’enfance, Shunpei Kaga, qui s’aperçoit rapidement de l’échange de corps entre les deux jeunes filles.

Rouge Éclipse est un manga de Shiki Kawabata, pré-publié dans le magazine Margaret (Shûeisha)  en 2014 et compilé en 3 tomes. Chez nous, le manga est publié par Akata, pour un prix de 6,99€ par tome. En 2018, Rouge Éclipse est adapté sur le petit écran par Netflix. Avec Hiroaki Matsuyama à la réalisation et Michinao Okada au scénario, Kaya Kiyohara campe le personnage de Ayumi Kohinata, Miu Tomita celui de Zenko Uminé, suivi par deux membres du groupe d’idols Johnny’s WEST, Tomohiro Kamiyama et Daiki Shigeoka campant respectivement les personnages de Koshirô Mizumoto et Shunpei Kaga.

L’œuvre de Shiki Kawabata s’articule autour de la thématique de l’envie. Dès le premier chapitre, on apprend que cet échange des corps n’est pas un accident, que c’est le fait d’Uminé. Envieuse de la condition de Ayumi, de sa beauté, de sa popularité ainsi que de son petit ami qu’elle aime secrètement, Uminé est décidé à laisser tomber sa vie pour vivre celle de Ayumi. Ayumi, elle se retrouve prise au piège dans un corps et une vie qui n’est pas la sienne. Cependant, cet échange des corps la met face au calvaire que pouvait subir Uminé au quotidien: regards malveillants et remarques blessantes concernant son apparence, venant aussi bien de ses camarades de classe que de sa propre mère. Mise plus bas que terre par ces attaques, Uminé s’était muté, à l’image d’un chat haret, en un être fragile, craintif dont le mécanisme d’auto-défense n’était qu’agressivité. Au fil des chapitres, Ayumi (dans le corps de Uminé) gagne en popularité. Tout d’abord auprès de Kaga, secrètement amoureux de Ayumi depuis toujours, puis auprès de sa classe. Révélée par Kaga, la nouvelle Uminé est soudainement plus accessible, et même mignonne, dans les yeux de ses camarades. Uminé se rend compte que malgré l’échange des corps, Ayumi reste populaire. C’est la beauté intérieure de Ayumi qui la faisait et la fait encore rayonner dans son entourage. Malgré son nouveau corps, malgré sa nouvelle vie, Uminé reste rongée par ses vieux démons. Hargneuse et ne supportant plus de voir le bonheur de Ayumi dans le corps qu’elle a rejeté, elle s’enfuit. Le manga atteint son apogée quand elle se rend à l’évidence: c’est la beauté intérieur qui compte. Plus que de l’avoir protégé, la hargne de Uminé, bien que légitime, n’a fait que l’isoler davantage des autres. 

Avec Rouge Éclipse, Shiki Kawabata nous livre un message plutôt ambigu: certes c’est la beauté intérieure qui compte, mais ce serait donc de la faute de Uminé si elle se faisait harcelée ? Son mauvais caractère n’est que le résultat des brimades infligé par ses camarades. Peut-on reprocher à quelqu’un ayant subi autant de dégâts de ne pas s’ouvrir aux autres ? Contrairement à l’héroïne de Life (Keiko Suenobu), Uminé n’est pas une battante. Finalement, si Uminé n’a pas réussi à voler la vie de rêve de Ayumi, c’est grâce au temps que cette dernière a passé dans son corps qu’elle peut désormais s’intégrer dans sa classe. Grâce à la gentillesse de Ayumi, Uminé peut désormais laisser s’exprimer sa véritable personnalité, la hargne en moins. Bien que la mangaka utilise le harcèlement scolaire pour construire le personnage de Uminé, on peut regretter que la thématique ne soit pas plus exploré et que, par conséquent, le propos soit quelque peu expédié et bancal.

Quid du drama ? C’est une bonne adaptation, le duo formé par Hiroaki Matsuyama (réalisation) et Michinao Okada (scénario) a bien compris ce qu’était le manga. L’histoire, les personnages, les évènements ainsi que l’ambiance, tout est fidèle au manga. Plus qu’être fidèles au manga, ils en repoussent les limites jusqu’à s’en émanciper. Quelques évènements sont remaniés pour que l’histoire soit plus cohérente et des scènes sont même ajoutées pour rendre le propos plus profond et plus saisissant. Par exemple, la mère de Uminé a bien plus de lignes dans le drama que dans le manga. Elle est plus négligente et bien plus acerbe envers sa fille que dans le manga. En résulte une scène de rédemption en fin de récit bien plus convaincante que celle dépeinte par Shiki Kawabata. Le montage vidéo se montre aussi plus efficace que le découpage des cases de l’autrice. Le montage très saccadé ainsi que les différentes prises de vue permettent de faire ressortir la hargne, la colère et les angoisses de Uminé de manière bien plus vivante. De plus, Kaya Kiyohara (Uminé dans le corps de Ayumi) pousse son personnage à son paroxysme en y ajoutant un TOC et une démarche de brute enragé, qui paraîtra peut-être un peu too much pour certains. Toujours sur l’aspect technique, le drama sublime le manga grâce à une colorimétrie maîtrisée, notamment avec des couchers de soleil chaleureux lors des quelques moments de grâce entre Ayumi et Kaga. Côté acteur, Daiki Shigeoka est une vraie bouffée d’air frais dans ce drama. Non seulement, il campe merveilleusement bien Kaga, mais il l’emmène au sommet. Il retranscrit avec brio le caractère enjoué, franc et impulsif de son personnage, et insuffle une énergie débordante de vie à ce drama grâce à son large sourire et son accent du Kansai. 

Cependant, le drama choisit de s’éloigner de deux éléments secondaires, mais non moins intéressants, du récit. Tout d’abord, pour interpréter le rôle de Ayumi, Kaya Kiyohara n’a pas eu à changer de coiffure. Alors que dans le manga, l’héroïne est blonde aux cheveux courts, Kaya Kiyohara est restée avec ses cheveux naturels: longs et noirs. Dans un soucis d’être davantage proche de la réalité, ce choix n’est pas surprenant. C’est même un choix assez courant que l’on retrouve dans de nombreuses adaptations de shôjo. Puis, un autre choix de la production, un peu plus curieux: le personnage de Mao Ukon. Outre son changement de style vestimentaire d’un médium à l’autre ; dans le manga, avant d’échanger de corps, elle était un homme, tandis que dans le drama, elle était une jeune fille pauvre enviant une camarade de classe riche. On peut s’interroger sur ce changement minime mais néanmoins significatif. Était-ce dans le but de s’identifier plus facilement à ce personnage secondaire ? Ou bien était-ce dans le but de ne pas retranscrire une histoire de changement de sexe ? On peut d’autant plus se poser la question que le personnage de Mao Ukon est plus présent dans le drama que dans le manga. La question demeure.

En définitive, Rouge Éclipse n’est pas un indispensable. Le point de départ n’est pas très original et le manga manque de quelques chapitres pour étoffer son propos. Cependant, il reste agréable à lire avec ses quelques moments de fulgurances. Le véritable point fort reste les personnages, et particulièrement celui de Zenko Uminé, emprunt d’un certain réalisme dans sa défense agressive qu’elle n’abaisse que très tard dans le récit. Pour un Rouge Éclipse plus fort et plus en profondeur, il est peut-être plus judicieux de se pencher sur son adaptation disponible sur Netflix.

Je crois que je suis un peu dure avec Rouge Éclipse mais j’espère que ça ne vous empêchera pas de lire le manga ou de voir le drama. De plus, il y a tout un pan du manga que je n’ai pas abordé ! Combatants Will Be Dispatched, il nuovo trailer presenta altri membri del cast

L’anime tratto dalla commedia fantasy dell’autore di KonoSuba andrà in onda dal 4 aprile.

Pubblicato un secondo trailer di “Sentouin, Hakenshimasu!” (Combatants Will Be Dispatched!) in occasione del Kadokawa Light Novel Expo, confermando il debutto della serie animata, basata sull’omonima light novel di Natsume Akatsuki (l’autore di KonoSuba e Kemono Michi: Rise Up), per il 4 aprile. 

Il video anticipa la sigla di testa "No.6.", interpretata da Miku Itou (Plunderer, Armed Girl's Machiavellism). Il brano di chiusura "Home Sweet Home" sarà invece cantato dalle doppiatrici Miyu Tomita, Sayaka Kikuchi, Natsumi Murakami e Minami Takahashi  .

La commedia fantasy è diretta da Hiroaki Akagi (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, Hina Logic from Luck & Logic) presso gli studi J.C.Staff (Hi Score Girl, DanMachi). La sceneggiatura è curata da Yukie Sugawara (Overlord, Kino’s Journey -the Beautiful World-), il character design è ad opera di Takehiro Suwa (direttore d’animazione in Assault Lily: Bouquet, Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2), mentre le musiche sono composte da Masato Kouda (KonoSuba, Asobi Asobase).

La Società Segreta Kisaragi ha una sola missione: dominare il mondo! Sostengono di essere un'organizzazione malvagia, ma hanno uno scienziato un po’ eccentrico, i loro generali sono donne molto sexy e ben poco vestite, e sono sorprendentemente preoccupati per il destino del pianeta!

È dura stare in prima linea per un'organizzazione del genere, e nessuno lo sa meglio di N. 6. In qualità di loro combattente, viene spedito in un lontano mondo alieno in una missione di ricognizione, accompagnato da una nuova partner, l’androide Alice. C’è un problema però: come si fa a pianificare un'invasione interstellare… di un mondo fantasy?!

Il primo numero del romanzo, corredato delle illustrazioni realizzate da Kakao Lanthanum, è uscito in Giappone nel novembre del 2017 e attualmente l’opera conta sei volumi in totale.

Dal marzo del 2018 ne viene serializzata una versione manga, disegnata da Masaaki Kiasa, giunta per il momento a cinque volumetti.

Meet the Main Mercs of Combatants Will Be Dispatched! TV Anime

  If you've got a hankering to witness the science fiction genre deliver a whupping to the fantasy genre, then you're in luck, because a new set of character settings and a special promotional illustration have been published for Combatants WIll Be Dispatched! (known in Japan as Sentoin, Hakenshimasu!), an upcoming TV anime based on the series of humorous light novels written by Natsume Akatsuki (KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world!) and illustrated by Kakao Lanthanum about an evil mega-corporation that invades an alien planet that looks a lot like a magical fantasy world.

  The new character settings include:

    Combat Agent Six (CV: Yūsuke Shirai), the most senior combatant of the Kisaragi Corporation. Although he is extremely capable in battle and has earned a lot of trust from the executives over the years, Combat Agent Six has a rotten personality and his unruly behavior keeps getting him passed over for promotion.

    And Alice Kisaragi (CV: Miyu Tomita), an android designed by Kisaragi Corporation. Although she is very pretty and delicate in appearance, Alice sports a high-performance brain and a self-destruct mechanism, and she has an acidic temperment that leads her to insult both enemies and allies alike. Her combat power matches her appearance, i.e. that of an ordinary young lady. Alice hates unscientific things like magic and the occult.

    Additionally, a new illustration (above) by original illustrator Kakaou Lanthanum has been published to celebrate the series being adapted into a TV anime.

    The original Combatants Will Be Dispatched! light novels are published in Japan by Kadokawa under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint, and English language versions are also available from Yen Press, who describe the story of the series as follows:

  Always bring a gun to a sword fight! With world domination nearly in their grasp, the Supreme Leaders of the Kisaragi Corporation--an underground criminal group turned evil megacorp--have decided to try their hands at interstellar conquest. A quick dice roll nominates their chief operative, Combat Agent Six, to be the one to explore an alien planet...and the first thing he does when he gets there is change the sacred incantation for a holy ritual to the most embarrassing thing he can think of. But evil deeds are business as usual for Kisaragi operatives, so if Six wants a promotion and a raise, he'll have to work much harder than that! For starters, he'll have to do something about the other group of villains on the planet, who are calling themselves the "Demon Lord's Army" or whatever. After all, this world doesn't need two evil organizations!

    Combatants Will Be Dispatched! is directed by Hiroaki Akagi and features animation production by J.C. Staff. The series is scheduled to begin broadcasting in Japan in April of 2021.

Na Burton US Open v slopestylu slavila Andersonova in Kadono, v halfpipu pa Caijeva in Totsuka

Zadnji petek in sobota v februarju sta bila v ameriškem Vailu, v Koloardu posvečena finalnim obračunom tradicionalnega tekmovanja Burton US Open. Zmagovalki in zmagovalca polfinalnih obračunov v obeh kategorijah v finalu niso ohranili svoje pozicije. V slopestylu sta zmago tako slavila legendarna domačinka Jamie Anderson, medtem ko je v moški konkurenci zmagal Japonec Yuki Kadono. V halfpipu se je zmage razveselila kitajska tekmovalka Xuetong Cai, Japonec Yuto Totsuka, pa je zmago že drugič zapored ukradel legendarnemu Scottyju Jamesu.

Sončno vreme, nebo brez oblaka in prijetne temperature so zaznamovale zaključek že 38. izvedbe tekmovanja Burton US Open. Petkov finalni obračun se je odvijal v slopestylu, kjer se je pomerilo deset tekmovalcev in šest tekmovalk, ki so si mesto v finalu izborili v polfinalnih obračunih.

Med dekleti, je svoj osmi US Open naslov osvojila domačinka Jamie Anderson, za katero je to že četrta zaporedna zmaga na pomembnih tekmovanjih, ki se jih je udeležila v tem letu - po naslovu X Games prvakinje v Aspnu, zmagi na tekmi za svetovni pokal v Mammoth Mountainu ter zmagi na Dew Touru, je bil rezultat, ki ga je dosegla v Vailu pričakovan, kljub temu, da je v polfinalu osvojila komaj peto mesto.

V prvi finalni vožnji je Andersonovi uspela kombinacija trikov, ki jih na treningu še ni sestavila v eni vožnji in z 84.50 točkami je že takoj zapečatila svojo zmago. Eden najprogresivnejših ženskih slopestyle nastopov v zgodovini je vseboval trike backside lipslide ter tailslide 270 out na drsnih objektih, backside 540 Indy grab in switch backside 540 Indy grab na objektih "transition feature", frontside boardslide 450 na railu ter switch frontside double cork 900 mute grab na zaključnem kickerju.

Na drugo mesto se je uvrstila Avstrijka Anna Gasser, ki je s prav tako navdušila z odlično predstavo in visoko oceno 81.00 točk. Na objektu "transition feature" je izvedla trik double crippler, ki je bil tako prvič v zgodovini izveden v ženskem slopestyle tekmovanju. Na glavnem skoku je postregla s trikom switch frontside 900 double cork mute grab. Na tretje mesto se je že drugo leto zapored z rezultatom 76.65 točk uvrstila japonska tekmovalka Miyabi Onitsuka, ki je na obeh zaporednih objektih "transition feature" izvedla obrata za 720 stopinj. Zmagovalka polfinalnega tekmovanja in lanskoletna zmagovalka tekmovanja - Novozelandka Zoi Sadowski-Synnott je v finalu osvojila peto mesto.

"Po tem, ko sem se uvrstila v finale, sem hotela "spustiti zavore" in pokazati kaj znam. Moj načrt je bil, da se prepustim nastopu in vzdušju, a priznam, da nisem mislila, da bo zares delovalo. A bila sem v pravem stanju in vse se je poklopilo, enostavno sem se dobro počutila in to je rezultat", je po tekmi povedala zmagovalka Andersonova.

1. Jamie Anderson (ZDA), 84.50 točk 2. Anna Gasser (Avstrija), 81.00 točk 3. Miyabi Onitsuka (Japonska), 76.65 točk 4. Enni Rukajarvi (Finska), 69.30 točk 5. Hailey Langland (ZDA), 65.95 točk 6. Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (Nova Zelandija), 55.45 točk

V moškem finalnem obračunu, je Japonec Yuki Kadono, po letu 2015 osvojil svojo drugo zmago na tekmovanju Burton US Open. Kadono je v svojih dveh nastopih prikazal dve najbolj razburljivi vožnji tekmovanja ter si v drugi z rezultatom 89.30 točk tudi zagotovil zmago. Zmagovalni nastop je vseboval trike half Cab 50-50 noseslide pretzel ter switch backside 270 on 270 out na drsnih objektiv, sledila sta alley-oop backside 1260 melon grab in switch frontside 900 double cork mute grab na dveh objektih "transition features", na railih je izvedel frontside boardslide 810 melon grab ter nastop zaključil z switch backside triple cork 1620 melon grabom na zadnjem kickerju. Ta trik je Kadono izvedel prvič po tekmovanju Burton US Open 2015, kjer se je v zgodovino vpisal s prvo izvedbo dveh zaporednih obratov za 1620 stopinj na tekmovanju.  

Drugo mesto je zasedel domači novinec Dusty Henricksen, ki si je že pri 17 letih z odličnimi nastopi tako v svetovnem pokalu kot tudi na vseh ostalih pomembnih tekmovanji ustvaril ime, ki ga uvrščamo v vrh svetovnega slopestyla. Aktualni mladinski olimpijski prvak, je sicer zmagal v polfinalnih bojih, v finalu pa z oceno 84.70 točk nekoliko zaostal za 7 let starejšim Japoncem. V sami majici s kratkimi rokavi je pred navdušeno množico navijačev na zadnjem kickerju izvedel trik backside 1800 quad cork mute grab, ki ga do sedaj še nikoli ni izvajal na tekmovanjih in je postal najbolje ocenjen trik dneva. Na tretje mesto se je uvrstil še en Američan Redmond Gerard, ki je v prvem nastopu z switch backside 270 pullback na zgornjem objektu ter switch backside 1440 triple cork mute grab na spodnjem kickerju z oceno 84.40 točk za rojakom zaostal za pičle tri desetinke.

Končni rezultati:

1. Yuki Kadono (Japonska), 89.30 točk 2. Dusty Henricksen (ZDA), 84.70 točk 3. Redmond Gerard (ZDA), 84.40 točk 4. Darcy Sharpe (Kanada), 83.85 točk 5. Hiroaki Kunitake (Japonska), 79.70 točk 6. Sobotno tekmovanje v halfpipu je prav tako postreglo s čudovitim vremenom in nekaj presenečenji. V treh nastopih se je za najboljšo oceno merilo šest finalistk in deset finalistov, ki so se spopadli v 6,7 metrov visokem halfpipu.

Med dekleti je Xuetong Cai končno uspel zaključek tekmovanja, ki si ga je želela že zadnjih 6 let. Dvakratna svetovna prvakinja je po lanskem tretjem mestu in srebru leta 2016 postala prva kitajska tekmovalka (v moški in ženski kategoriji), ki je v 38 letni zgodovini uspela zmagati na tekmovanju Burton US Open. Zmago si je prislužila z oceno 88.16 točk, ki jo je prejela za nastop, ki je vseboval Indy grab in alley oop na modificiranem minipipu ter stilsko dovršen frontside 900 tuck knee grab, backside 540 mute grab ter melon air to fakie v superpipu.

Na drugo mesto se je uvrstila japonska predstavnica Haruna Matsumoto, ki je za nastop, ki je vseboval kombinacijo frontside 1080 into a switch frontside 720, prejela oceno 85.59 točk. 18 letna Ruki Tomita, prav tako japonska tekmovalka, je z nastopom, ki je vseboval trike frontside 900 melon in dva zaporedna obrata za 720 stopinj, osvojila tretje mesto, za katerega je zadostovalo 85.00 točk.

"To je neverjetno - zmaga na Burton US Open je nekaj kar sem si vedno želela. Ta dogodek je resnično namenjen snowboardingu, objekti so odlično pripravljeni in res sem uživala v snowboardanju tukaj!", je po koncu tekmovanja povedala nasmejana zmagovalka Caijeva.

1. Xuetong Cai (Kitajska), 88.16 točk 2. Haruna Matsumoto (Japonska), 85.50 točk 3. Ruki Tomita (Japonska), 85.00 točk 4. Mitsuki Ono (Japonska), 78.66 točk 5. Maddie Mastro (ZDA), 40.16 točk 6. Shaotong Wu (Kitajska), 31.66 točk

V moški kategoriji, se je  najbolje odrezal Japonec Yuto Totsuka, ki je v svojem drugem nastopom, ocenjenim s 97.00 točkami, izvedel trike McTwist ter alley oop rodeo 540 stalefish grab na modificiranem minipipu ter frontside 1440 double cork Indy grab, switch frontside 1260 double cork mute grab in switch backside 1080 double cork mute grab na superpipu. S tem je po lanskoletnem tretjem mestu osvojil prvo zmago na tem tekmovanju in še enkrat več ugnal največjega tekmeca Scottyja Jamesa, ki se je zdel vse do zadnje tekme za svetovni pokal te sezone, enostavno nepremagljiv.

23 letni avstralski tekmovalec Scotty James, zmagovalec polfinalnega obračuna in lanskoletnega tekmovanja Burton US Open, sicer pa lastnik letošnjega halfpipe kristalnega globusa ter aktualni X Games in svetovni prvak te discipline, se je moral po nastopu, v katerega je vključil visok switch backside double cork 1260, zadovoljiti s 93.00 točkami in šele tretjim mestom. Med omenjena večna rivala, se je uspel vriniti Švicar Jan Scherrer, ki si je oceno 95.16 točk prislužil z nastopom, ki je vseboval trike McTwist into Haakon flip ter Miller flip na modificiranem minipipu in switch frontside 1080 double cork mute grab, frontside 1260 double cork frontside grab ter frontside alley oop 900 nose grab na superpipu, s čimer je popolnoma navdušil množico navijačev.

Končni rezultati:

1. Yuto Totsuka (Japonska), 97.00 točk 2. Jan Scherrer (Švica), 95.16 točk 3. Scotty James (Australija), 93.00 točk 4. Pat Burgener (Švica), 87.00 točk 5. Joey Okesson (ZDA), 84.66 točk 6. Na tekmovanju so podelili tudi nazive Toyota Rookie of the Year sta si tudi letos prislužila najboljša mlada in obetavna tekmovalca na tekmovanju. Nagrada in 5000$ je šlo v roke 17 letnemu domačinu Dustyju Henricksenu, ki je osvojil drugo mesto v kategoriji slopestyle ter 15 letni Japonski Mitsuki Ono, ki je na halfpipe tekmovanju osvojila četrto mesto. Tudi nagrada Burton Riders’ Choice Award je namenjena tekmovalki in tekmovalki, ki s svojim nastopom na tekmovanju najbolj navduši gledalce. Naslov in nagrado 5.000$ sta si prislužila domačinka Hailey Langland, ki je nastopila v slopestylu ter najboljši novinec in drugo uvrščeni v kategoriji slopestyle, 17 letni Američan Dusty Henricksen.

Celoten Burton US Open je potekal tudi v znamenju skupnih snowboard spustov pod geslom #rideonJake, ki so potekali v spomin na ustanovitelja podjetja Burton - Jaka Burtna Carpenterja, ki je zaradi raka umrl lani novembra. Jake Burton je bil predan snowboarderju in je s srčnostjo, razumevanjem in podporo povezoval tako tekmovalce, kot tudi rekreativne snowboarderje in pripadnike skupnosti po vsem svetu. Ride on Jake skupinski snowboard spusti se odvijajo skozi celotno sezono na vseh kontinentih ter častijo življenje človeka, ki je k snowboardingu kot ga poznamo danes, prispeval zares veliko.

Tudi med moškim halfpipe finalom, so Jacka Burtna počastila znana imena snowboard zgodovine in sedanjosti, ki so se spustila po halfpipu in ponazorila 38 let tekmovanja Burton US Open ter s tem počastila Jaka. Ross Powers, Tricia Byrnes, Danny Kass, Gretchen Bleiler, brata Mitrani, Shaun White, Kelly Clark in mnogi drugi so zavzeli halfpipe v spomin na Jaka Burtna, ki se ga je Danny Davis v ganljivem govoru vpisal kot najvplivnejšega snowboarderja na svetu.
