Movie Review: Dangal
Back in 2012, Divya Rao, a member of Disney’s creative team came up with the idea of Dangal after reading an article about the Phogat sisters. She was able to convince Manish Hariprasad, her boss, with little persuasion. Four years of persistent hard-work by different players and finally we have Dangal, the most-awaited Santa’s gift this season.
Aamir did everything methodical as he usually does, from giving his 1000 percent to the movie, various physical transformations, catching the pulse of the audience, timing the first look poster to teaser to trailer to music launch: everything has exceeded expectations despite very high expectations to start with.
I made sure I did not get carried away with the expectations and tried not to read or know more about the sisters and their haanikaarak father. Also, I just listened to the music to get the feel of the narrative and the melody of the compositions rather than trying to get the plot of the movie, which anyway was made known to the audience thanks to the extensive publicity.
When the D-Day finally arrived, I made sure I watched it first day first show. The expectation was 3.75/5 with a fear of how would a director who did movies like Chillar party, Bhootnath Returns, handle an Aamir Khan project with gargantuan expectations. Also, being a solo release, beating Sultan’s collections was the least that was expected of a movie where the superstar actually does not play a superstar but a strong character. Also, the backdrop, build of the protagonist, music to an extent, locations etc. had strong resemblances to Sultan. Nevertheless, I decided I am just going to submit myself to the narration 100 percent.
The entire first half went with a perfect screenplay with top-notch performances from every single actor, however small he/she maybe. A big thumbs up to Casting Chabria for getting the cast perfectly right. The plight of a desperate father, a helpless mother, 2 little gals who are having a very indifferent childhood, a man taking on the society with a single-minded dedication, everything was put in with right amount of emotion and one could not help but just wipe those moist eyes every 20 mins or so. The comic narration was another masterstroke from the creative team.
The second half had its share of dull moments where one would actually start feeling the pressure of sitting through a 2 hour 40 min plus movie. The movie also slowly starts losing its grip in terms of how close it is to reality and by the time it reaches the predictable climax, it wins over the audience more due to its dramatic and cinematic narration, direction and screenplay with the right BGM and sincere performances than applying logic in thinking there is no way this could have happened in real life.
Seeti scenes:
1) The bout in the office with the commentary in te background. A very well-conceived scene.
2) The haan-naa scenes between the Phogat couple over the decision the man has taken.
3) The Akhada war between the father and the daughter.
4) The sisters’ confrontation.
5) Father-daughter patch up over phone.
6) The whole presence of Sakshi despite not being in the foreground in any of the scenes.
7) Jana Gana Mana
And finally,
The good: The work of entire creative team, writers Piyush, Shreyas, Nikhil and Nitesh, direction, screenplay, music, bgm and almost all technical departments were top notch. The director should be appreciated for believing 100 per cent in the script and delivering it to perfection without second thoughts. The comic elements and Sakshi, the wife and the mother need a special mention. The Haryanvi tone of the movie also get 100 marks.
The bad: When you are sitting through a 2 hr 40 min movie watching wrestling bouts one after the other, there is that sense of boredom. Maybe that extra 10 mins of chops on the editing table might have done a little good to the movie or it might have totally spoilt it. Aamir Khan’s perfectionist attitude alo has a flip-side. Some of the scenes do not come out naturally and feel a little cinematic, a little forced upon and a little melodramatic.
The ugly: When one is making a movie using real people names, one needs to be very careful in what is being shown to the audience as tere are a few reputations at stake. There were quite a few scenes in the second half that seemed very cinematic and at times stupid. Add the climax to it and you come out of the theater with mixed reactions. If the core of the movie gets a little fictionalized, you tend to feel more for it.
The best: Despite the above comments, the best part was Aamir’s time and dedication that he gave to the movie. His look in the youth with the muscular gym body could have easily taken him a good 6 months of effort and the screen time for that is not even 5 minutes. Now, thats more than a director’s actor. A special mention also needs to be given to Kripa Shankar Bishnoi for the wrestling training to the cast. All the four kids were absolutely amazing and had given more than their best. Each and every wrestling move and bout was undertaken with the minutest detail and absolute dedication.
Business: Dangal has all the ingredients of becoming an all-time blockbuster. If Christmas and New Year had not been on Sundays, it would have challenged the worldwide gross collections of PK. Its sure to become 2016’s highest grosser. The father-daughter connect is sure to bring back audiences to the cinemas multiple times despite the demonetization. Bollywood’s worst year in terms of business in recent memory would thank Santa for a perfect Christmas.
Bottomline: A near-perfect movie has disappointed a tad due to the climax. Aamir has been pitching right from the beginning that its not the wrestling story that he wants to tell but that of a father-daughter relationship. And that has been told to perfection. I would stick with 3.75/5.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review: An emotional story packed with powerful performances
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/angrezi-medium-movie-review-an-emotional-story-packed-with-powerful-performances/
Angrezi Medium Movie Review: An emotional story packed with powerful performances
STORY: Champak Bansal (Irrfan) is a simple, small-town businessman — one of the owner’s of Ghasitaram sweet shop chain — who’s leading a comfortable life with his teenage daughter, Tarika (Radhika Madan). But, Tarika has big dreams – of graduating from a recognised university in London. With little means to fulfil his daughter’s ambition, how far will the father go to ensure Tarika realises her ‘videshi dream’?
REVIEW: Born and raised in Udaipur (Rajasthan), Champak’s world pretty much revolves around his daily bickering with his other Ghasitaram brother, Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal) and caring for his only daughter, Tarika, who’s all set to graduate high school and embark on another academic journey. But, unlike her father, she doesn’t want to limit her dreams to the place she has grown up in; instead, she wants to explore what lies outside of her small world. Unaware of what’s ahead, Champak gives in to his daughter’s wishes, but things start to spiral out of control when it comes down to paying the hefty fee. A dedicated father, Champak vows to do whatever it takes to send his daughter to study abroad, and treads on a path that not only proves his unconditional love for his ‘betiya’, but also redefines their relationship.
Homi Adajania’s ‘Angrezi Medium’ touches upon the pulse of the young generation’s obsession with pursuing further studies in foreign countries, and their family’s determination to embrace every Himalayan hurdle for their loved ones. There are other underlying themes, too, but this remains the primary subject of the film. It is a well-known fact that in reality, Irrfan shot this film while undergoing treatment. But while watching this film you can put that thought aside. What you watch on screen is the actor in his element — in every frame. He just takes you along… you laugh with him, cry with him and every time he overcomes an obstacle, you rejoice with him. Irrfan breathes life into Champak in a way that nobody else can. And walking shoulder to shoulder with him is yet another fine actor, Deepak Dobriyal. His camaraderie with Irrfan is yet another testament to the fact that both of them are such polished, well-prepared actors. Radhika Madan, as this mildly rebellious and often clueless teenager, pulls off a fine performance, especially in the scenes where she shares a beautiful relationship with her father. Their chemistry is organic, and the portrayal of their respective characters seems so real that their dilemmas and inner conflicts start to resonate. Kiku Sharda, as the childhood buddy of the two brothers, is his usual funny self. Ranvir Shorey, as Balakrishna ‘Bobby’ Tripathy, living the seemingly perfect NRI dream, acts as a catalyst in moving the plot ahead. His depiction of Bobby comes as a refreshing twist in the plot and Shorey does complete justice to his part.
The look and feel of this comedy-drama is all things sweet and small-town — the actors consistently carry a thick local accent (Radhika’s sounds a bit forced though) and close attention has been paid to what we call a ‘small-town traits’ that beautifully plays out in multiple scenes and sequences as the story progresses. With one foot in homeland and the other in London, the songs and the scenarios have been chalked out keeping the two different backgrounds in mind; works out fine and differentiates the mood well. The first half of the screenplay is more engaging then the second, but while trying to fit in too many subplots, the story goes quite haywire. There are some fantastic moments in the film, and beautifully written scenes between the characters, which are the highlights of this film. The story is far too convenient and has inconsistencies that are hard to overlook, but Irrfan’s exceptional performance makes it worth the watch.
The film does lose its grip on several occasions, what it does not lose is its hold on the emotion that it is trying to bring out, and the message it leaves you with.

Hats off to Katrina Kaif for pulling off a power packed woman oriented role in Tiger Zinda Hain. 👏👏👏 Loads of respect and applause to Salman Khan for giving ample screen space and substance to the female protoagonist which is usually not seen in Indian movies. I loved all of Katrina's action scenes ( remember right from childhood how I would cheer up at the rare sight of the female protoagonist doing action scenes like for eg those movies starring Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi or Parveen Babi). Looking forward to Bollywood creating more of women empowered roles in future. Katrina really worked hard on the action scenes seeing the flexibility and power in her moves, so super applause to her again. Loved the scene where she does the power reversal on the Bagdawi chief when he is about to rape her. Never expected this movie to be an awesome thriller as it was my children's choice and I hadn't seen the first one. So great movie but on a lighter vein some of the egotistical dialogues about Tiger being great could have been avoided 😊...lol...as I believe self praise is the worst praise. 😜 But maybe it's a popular demand or script demand so will overlook that for now. Again one or two scenes could have been more conceptually shown as that would have made the scene more realistic like for eg the last scene about how Katrina was saved from the tunnel by Salman. But of course I am no expert. I am sure there are always time and creative constraints a movie faces. But overall a great movie. I would love to write a political thriller like this some day. It was a great script based on real events - so hats off to the writers as well! 👏👏 Katrina keep rocking and doing great stuff like this always! 👏👏 Pic credit @KatrinaKaif #actionscene #femaleaction #womanempowermemt #strongfemales #femalebadass #badass #politicalthriller #spythriller #tigerzindahain #katrinakaif #salmankhan #beingsalmankhan @beingsalmankhan #filmreview #moviereview #tigerzindahainreview #moviebuffs #hindimoviereview #filmcritics
