Louis M. Martini Winery, St. Helena (No. 1)
The winery was founded by Louis M. Martini, who was born in Genoa, Italy, and immigrated to the United States in 1900 at the age of 13 to join his father in San Francisco. He spoke no English and had little formal education. At age 19 he returned to Italy to study winemaking. On his return, he and his father went into the wine business with others, eventually establishing the L.M. Martini Grape Products Company. Because of Prohibition, it sold only non-alcoholic and sacramental products.
Anticipating the end of Prohibition, Martini looked for a location suitable for growing grapes for the dry wines he preferred. He chose the Napa Valley and purchased a 10-acre prune orchard in St. Helena, planted it with vineyards, and established the Louis M. Martini Winery. He began to sell wine on December 5, 1933, the first day such sale was legally allowed. He introduced or promoted multiple changes that are now common practice, such as growing grapes on hillsides, favoring dry wines rather than the sweet wines which were then more popular, and labeling wines with variety and vintage at a time when most wines were bottled as generics. He was a founder of the Napa Valley Vintners Association in 1943.

🇬🇧Domain Description 🇬🇧
Located in the commune of Bourg, in the heart of the Côtes de Bourg region, whose wine-growing vocation dates back to Antiquity, our 9-hectare vineyard benefits from the specific microclimate generated by the Gironde estuary, giving the appellation's hillsides a significant advantage over other Bordeaux vintages: greater solar radiation, less extreme temperatures, and less rainfall. Planted on the slopes, near the banks of the Dordogne, our vines also enjoy ideal exposure for the ripening of the grapes, while the clay-limestone soil provides freshness and drainage. It includes the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot (43%), Malbec (27%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). The blend of these grape varieties produces a fruity, delicious and balanced wine.

🇫🇷Description du Domaine 🇫🇷

3. "make it stop"
the slow slopes of the Brightcrown mountains stretched away beyond them, green in the spring and the fading afternoon light, long shadows cast stark by the pine trees. not too far, but just far enough to be out of range for the vile Abyssal creatures that had ambushed them on patrol, gray and gold and bitter purple on the wind.
in her arms, Amber shivered, face pallid and smile shaky.
"Eula. I think - I need to rest for a bit - it hurts so - "
"of course we'll rest, and you'll be all right soon," Eula said, sternly, and thanked the Archons for the mask she had always done so well to cultivate over the years, because inwardly she was less sure.
she laid Amber down on the grass, gently, smoothing back her friend's hair from her sweaty forehead as she did so. thankfully, the glancing bite on Amber's arm, the slash marks marking her side weren't serious; painful yes, but nothing she couldn't bind up until they reached the city and the Deaconess's assistance. it was the creeping bruise-like gray and black shadows on the girl's skin that worried her more, as she tore back the shredded cloth further to reach the wounds for tending.
she should have gone first. but her Outrider friend always took point, and the creatures had been so fast. there one moment, and right behind you the next, ready to swipe their long bitter claws...
Rifthounds, Albedo had said, back when Razor had first brought news of them. dark creatures full of the power of the Abyss, whose attacks sapped your strength and left venom behind.
Amber's breath was coming faster now, between parted lips that had now lost any hint of a smile. her wide eyes found Eula's above her.
"it's - so cold, isn't it? with - with the sun going down - "
Eula gritted her teeth. "yes, I suppose it is, isn't it?"
her cloak wasn't much comfort, Amber shaking beneath it just as much as without it, teeth chattering together. she squeezed her eyes shut as Eula tied off the bandage around her arm, wincing, arching her head back as another shudder went through her.
"Eula. I think - I think I - I feel all wrong - " her breath pinched off into a fit of coughing, ribs heaving under Eula's hands, blood flowing faster from the long claw-slashes. "am I - "
she would lie to her till the end, if it came to that, but she hoped it wouldn't.
"don't be ridiculous. you'll be fine."
the bandages were secure now and the cloak bundled about her, but if anything Amber looked worse than before, cold sweat matting her hair to her skin, lips almost white. she groped one hand up and tightened her grasp desperately around Eula's fingers. her voice was a hoarse whisper.
"it hurts. make it stop - it hurts so - "
"the Winery and its environs are the closest thing to civilization out here, and so we'll settle you there and call for the Deaconess." Eula knelt down, claymore slung out of the way at her back, and gathered Amber up in her arms. "it will all be fine. it will... all be fine, do you hear?"
Amber's only response was a breathless sob into the hollow of Eula's neck, as another spasm of pain shuddered through her. but that was a promise, whether she heard it or not, and Eula would make it come true, on the honor of the Lawrences.
that was what she told herself, anyway, as she set off down the hillside towards help.

Today we were off to an early start of the rally. At 7:00 o‘clock we took off from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope and from there via the Lourens Pass to Franschoek, the French wine region east of Cape Town.
The roads chosen were excellent and we had no problems with the car! In the beginning we drove alongside the coast down to the Cape with almost no traffic. Everyone was heading into the town while we left it driving south on the peninsula. White sandy beaches ideal for surfers and a constant change between a lush and rugged landscape. The winds close to the Cape forces nature to duck down in low shrubs which grow in various colors over rocky plains and hills. The Cape of Good Hope is not the most southern tip of Africa but certainly the most prominent. We were the first ones there and were the only ones who hiked up to the lighthouse as well. The funicular was out of order today.
We then continued back northbound alongside the coast. Everything was meticulously kept clean. We drove through various villages nestled on the hillside or built directly at the beaches. Muizenberg we found especially picturesque.
It required some time before we realized that we are not on the clock and that we actually can stop to take pictures whenever we want. The absence of competitive sections makes it easy on the cars.
From the south we then had a transit section before leaving the main roads towards Franschoek. The weather was very pleasant with temperatures around 25 degrees celsius.
Before heading down to Franschoek we drove through fruit plantations which covered the hills all the way to the horizon.
After a superb late lunch at the winery „Haute Cabriére“ we headed for the Franschoek Hotel & Spa to spend the night!

There's a winery nearby with a huge wine cellar cut into a volcanic hillside, and two people died in it on two separate occasions in the last two years. 😱
They offer tours through the wine cellar with little treats and wine tasting. Could be pretty interesting. Apparently both cases happened during cave-ins.

Perched along a stunning coastal hillside @harmonycellars overlooks the quaint hamlet of Harmony, CA, with vineyards that aren’t visible from this famous viewpoint. In fact, a high magnesium content in the soil make for not-so suitable growing conditions 😔. But fear not, dear friends 😃! This situation suits winemaker/owner Chuck just fine. Untethered by a single estate, Chuck is able to offer a diverse selection of wines, all of which are crafted in Harmony for your sensory enjoyment. Head to the tasting room + sample iconic wines sourced from stellar fruit grown along the Central Coast from Monterey to Santa Margarita in the south. When paired with Harmony Cellars’ epic views, the whole package comes together. Some might say it’s a perfect blend. Located on the coast between Cambria + Cayucos (25 min from Paso) + it’s a fave getaway for locals + visitors alike that takes you driving on stunning Hwy 46 West to the quaint, artisan town of Harmony (pop 18!) off scenic Hwy 1. It’s one of the smallest towns established in 1872 around a dairy that produced milk + cheese. As the only winery in town, @harmonycellars tasting room has the advantage of being situated on the hill overlooking the tiny town with views of the coastal countryside. Kim + Chuck Mulligan, started the winery in 1989, no surprise, as wine runs thick in her blood. Her great-grandfather, Giacomo Barlogio, a founder of the old creamery cooperative, used to make wine in his basement - exactly what we expect from an Italian. 4 generations later, the winery sits on the family’s original landholdings. After savoring their wines while lounging on the lawn that overlooks the coastal rolling hills + happy grazing cows, we love going for a hike along the water at Harmony Headlands State Park on Hwy 1 south of the winery. Guaranteed, you'll come away with a cheery smile, sparkling memories + happy lungs revived by the fresh ocean air. This is one to repeat time after time. Wine Pick: Grandpa Barlogio Zin Special anniversary label is a tribute to owner Kim’s great grandfather, the founder of the Harmony Valley Creamery. This is a jammy Zin with intense flavors of raspberry, boysenberry + cranberry. (at Harmony Cellars) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cq53M2IJK-o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Vineyard workers.  Watercolor by Jake Lee (from the collection of the Chinese Historical Society of America).
Chinese Pioneers in California’s Wine Industry
The work by the Chinese is excavating the wine caves for what would become the Buena Vista winery has been well known and researched by the original deans of Chinese American historiography, the late Phil Choy and Him Mark Lai.  The story of Chinese participation in building this industry of Sonoma County and California continues to attract the interest of local historians.
In 2018, I toured the BV winery again last year with the executive director of the Chinese Historical Society of America. With a couple exceptions, most of the guides were aware of the provenance of BV’s wine caves. The then-new ownership appears more committed to recounting the substantial contributions made by Chinese labor and engineering staff into the larger history of this landmark winery.  Photos of Chinese men working in the fields and bottling wine are displayed in Buena Vista’s tasting room.
“We feel it’s more important than ever to talk about the reason we exist and the people who contributed to it − Chinese, Hungarian, French,” says Jean-Charles Boisset, whose family company, Boisset Collection, a US subsidiary of Boisset, La Famille des Grands Vins (France’s third largest wine holding company and Burgundy’s largest producer), bought BV in 2011.
An 2017 article by NPR food reporter, Grace Hwang Lynch, summarized the labor and the ultimate fate of the Chinese workers whose involvement in virtually all phases of the production literally built a multi-billion dollar industry for Northern California and the US.  “In 1857,” Hwang wrote, “a wealthy Hungarian named Agoston Haraszthy purchased a ranch in Sonoma Valley and named it Buena Vista, with the vision of introducing winemaking techniques from his homeland. . . . Haraszthy turned to Ho Po, a Chinese labor contractor from San Francisco, who sent 150 of his countrymen to build Buena Vista, Sonoma's oldest commercial winery.“

The Chinese workers dug a cave network for the BV winery which is actually more extensive than what a causal tour will disclose.  However, a couple of the 19th century excavations have collapsed due to past seismic activity.
Chinese labor also dug the caves for other wineries.  In 1870, Jacob Schram found new employment for the Chinese laborers who had recently finished constructing tunnels and grades over the Sierra Nevada Mountains for the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad.Schram hired them to dig a network of caves through the soft Sonoma Volcanics Formation rock underlying his vineyard. To its credit, the Schramsberg website also acknowledges the Chinese laborers who dug Napa’s first hillside caves for wine-aging and storage.

In the late 1870′s Hwang recounts, the locals began to drive out the Chinese from Sonoma County’s vineyards through economic boycott or worse.
Tumblr media
“1106 -- Buena Vista Vineyard, Sonoma -- Bottling Wine,” no date. Photographer unknown (from the collection of Buena Vista Winery and George Webber).
The experience of the Sonoma County Chinese demonstrates that the aggregate, private violence continued even after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.  Local law enforcement either turned a blind eye or aided such violence, and the decades that straddled 1882 produced an internal migration of nonwhite Americans in the western US that had not been seen since the Trail of Tears (which was essentially done at gunpoint in a military operation), and would not be seen again until the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural South between 1916 and 1970.
The Chinese would remain in vintners’ workforces into the next century, local conditions permitting.  However, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 would continue to exact a toll on the population of laborers, and growers would gravitate toward other groups of agricultural workers.
Tumblr media
“Chinese farm workers pruning a vineyard,” c. 1900.  Photographer unknown (from the Title Insurance and Trust Collection of the California Historical Society).  CHS wrote about this photo in its Spring 1978 quarterly as follows:  “Under the watchful eyes of Yankee overseers, Chinese laborers built California’s railroad, reclaimed the Delta, and nursed the state’s infant agriculture, including its vineyards.  .
The Chinese pioneers left as their legacy the foundation of a multi-billion dollar industry upon which the economy of California prospers in the 21st century.  Even today, researchers and writers continue to coax from the historical record more stories of a vibrant presence in the state’s earliest vineyards.

“The Vintage In California -- At Work At the Wine Presses.”  Drawing by Paul Frenzeny (from the Robert B. Honeyman, Jr. Collection of Early Californian and Western American Pictorial Material at the Bancroft Library)
Note about the artist (by Theresa Salazar of the Bancroft Library):
French artist Paul Frenzeny came to North America in the 1860s to serve under Marshal Achille Bazaine, commander of the French expeditionary corps in Mexico, sent to support Napoleon Ill's abortive effort to establish an empire there under Archduke Maximilian of Austria. Sometime before 1868 Frenzeny went to New York City, for between that year and 1873 Harpers Weekly published some twenty of his sketches, showing New York views as well as events in the Mexican war and the Pennsylvania coal fields (Samuels, p. 178).
Harpers commissioned Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier, another Frenchman, to travel across the country and record the landscape in remote, unexplored areas, telling its readers that "these gentle-men will not restrict themselves to the ordinary routes of travel. They will make long excursions on horseback into regions where railroads have not penetrated, where even the hardy squatter, the pioneer of civilization, has not yet erected his rude log-cabin" (Harpers Weekly, November 8, 1873, p. 994). The men left New York in the fall of 1873 and reached San Francisco the following summer, riding horseback from Denver.
Frenzeny apparently stayed on in San Francisco for at least six years and became known for his illustrations and sketches of Chinatown (Hughes, p. 400). He participated in the artistic life of the city and became a member of the new Bohemian Club. His partnership with Tavernier may have ended shortly after the men arrived in San Francisco, for Harper's illustrations of California and Nevada subjects between 1876 and 1878 and in the early eighties were signed by Frenzeny alone. In 1879 Harper's published Central American drawings executed on his journey back to New York. Between 1882 and 1887 Frenzeny's work appeared in Leslie's Weekly. Frenzeny later provided 150 illustrations for Harrington O'Reilly's Fifty Years on the Trail, Frenzeny’s last known publication (1889). The last decade or so of his life is undocumented, but he is believed to have died in London in 1902 (Karolik, 1:163-164; and Hughes, p. 192).

In from the cold: Scandi wines hope to win over drinkers
Sipping a glass of local wine is likely not what springs to mind when visiting Scandinavia, but this colder, northerly region is emerging as a new wine frontier.
Hundreds of commercial vineyards are now dotted across Denmark, Sweden, and even Norway, as a first generation of professional winemakers transform what was once a niche hobby into a small but flourishing industry.
Far north of France's Bordeaux or California's Napa Valley, more than 10,000 vines grow on a hillside on Zealand, Denmark's biggest island.
"People have found out that it is actually possible to grow wine in Denmark, so newcomers are coming, year after year," says Nina Fink, as she shows the BBC her three-hectare (seven-acre) winery, Vejrhøj Vingård.
Nina and her husband Niels started their operation 13 years ago, after retiring from business jobs in Copenhagen. They grow predominantly green grapes, producing floral white wines, as well as sparkling and rosé.
"We have longer summer days with more sunlight than you have in France or in Italy, so the conditions are different," she explains

Beringer Vineyards, St. Helena (No. 3)
A LEGACY OF FIRSTS
Beringer is known for establishing many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. We were one of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. We were the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition. We are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.
Passion has the wonderful power to turn mere objects into an obsession, to transform everyday tasks into art. At Beringer, we have been living our passion for 145 years.
1868 - A NEW LIFE IN AMERICA
Our history dates back to the year 1868, when Jacob Beringer, enticed by the opportunities of the new world, sailed from his home in Mainz, Germany, to New York. However, after hearing that the rocky hillside soil and fertile valley floor of Napa Valley resembled that of vineyards back home in Germany, Jacob made his way to California in 1869. He became cellar foreman for Charles Krug, one of the first commercial winemakers in Napa Valley. A few years later, in 1875, Jacob and his brother, Frederick, purchased 215 acres, right next door to Charles Krug in St. Helena, for $14,500. This parcel of land, known as Los Hermanos (the brothers), became the heart of the Beringer estate.
