In her trek through North Carolina in 1939, famed documentary photographer Dorothea Lange captured the photo above in Pittsboro. Lange offered no details other than those that appear in the caption “Sign tacked to pole near the post office. Main street, Pittsboro, North Carolina.” At the time, the Pittsboro Post Office was located in the main block of Hillsboro Street.
Perhaps Lange decided to photograph the sign because she too was curious about it. A little online research suggests that "piccolo" was slang for jukebox, or recorded music. The sign has the word spelled in an unusual way but the message was likely clear to all potential participants -- Come dance to canned music.
Hosting the party was GW Leach--likely George W. Leach, who lived with his wife Sallie on Masonic Street. Note the admission charges included on the sign: Single man, 10 cents; man and woman, 15 cents. Commenters on other sites have suggested that this was what was called a "rent party." Especially during the Great Depression, this was a party with music and dancing, given to raise money for the host's rent or household expenses by collecting a contribution from each guest. Sometimes food was sold at the event. Too bad Lange didn't stay in Pittsboro to photograph the party

prompts? hmmm ... a good little slow dancing snippet would be wonderful if you're up to it :]
(I ask this as I listen to my grillster playlist full of slow love songs)
borrowing some Hell-rasiers from @silverskye13, I was struck immediately by an idea for these two <3
Gaster never expected the damned thing to work.
He found it at the bottom of a canyon, lookin' all sad and mopey. Just like his fire did when the snow came blowing in all fierce. As it was doin now. Winter had come down with some sort of reckoning behind the flakes and left most of Deadwood stuck indoors, Grillby being stuck worst of the lot. Never in their years traveling together had he seen Grillby so stirred up an' ready to turn something to soot. For once, Gaster didn't like the sight of that smoke prowling around the room. So he dragged the pitiful thing back to the bar amongst all the logs for the other stuck townsfolk and placed it straight in the fire’s path. Grillby stared - glared - at it as Gaster patted all the snow off his duster.
“What’s that.” Grillby’s scowl hadn’t deterred him before and wouldn’t deter him here.
“It makes music.” Or it did, at some point or another.
“I know that. Why’s it in the bar?” He still looked offended by it.
“Maybe I don’t want to lose my voice singing for you all the time.” Gaster waved off whatever expression Grillby’s flames turned into at that. Course he would sing until he was hoarse, and then sing a little past that point. But Gaster was too cold from trudging around Deadwood, wasn't up for arguing over anything so when Grillby opened his mouth again, he snapped, “do something with it at least. Turn it to charcoal if you want. Better than the bar top.”
That settled that enough for the day. The little music player sat all hunched up and forlorn for only one more day, before the sound of flickering flames was joined by tinkering clicks of springs and bits and bobs.
Nothing seemed to happen beyond that. Snow came and went, folks returned to the bar, flowers bloomed in the prairie grass. Gaster got back to ranch work and Grillby managed his bar.
Then, one slow evening, music filled the stillness.
Gaster looked up in surprise.
“What's this?” He watched Grillby move away from the music player, a satisfied twist in his flames.
"I want you to stop darkening that corner of my bar." Grillby held his hand out towards him.
"You like me darkening the corner," Gaster countered the well-worn complaint with his own well-worn excuse. "It keeps the ilk riding through from doing it."
The invitation still stretched towards him. The music was a gently crooning thing, making the room go all soft and out of focus, like a memory drawn in pencil between the pages of his book. Gaster's bones found Grillby's fire on her next chorus.
Hand in his. Hand on waist, his draped over his arm.
It wasn't hard to match the music’s sway, not hard to match his partner’s neither. There was plenty of room to move around, dance however they wished, but Gaster was just fine with their slow spiral. He hummed along to the music, keeping them in time. Reminded him of another dance.
“When was the last time we danced like this?” He asked.
“Hmm, Hillsboro Manor, the woman who had real gold in her wallpaper.”
“Real gold, that’s right,” Gaster echoed with a laugh. “Almost forgot about her from that day. Too bad we couldn't steal some of that paper too.”
He got a snort of fire pops for that, then Grillby spun him out of their lazy circle, only their hands connected when extended out before he was yanked back in close.
“Remember how we got away?” Grillby asked, all grins of mischief.
“Do not dip me-” Grillby dipped him anyways, hand warm and steady behind him, their faces too close to do anything but lose the gap to a kiss. Gaster hadn't then, too fulla nerves about all the stolen trinkets and their plan to do anything. He'd make up for that now. His hand pulled on Grillby's collar, getting him in close. He could taste the delighted surge of warmth at that choice, and chased it between his teeth for as much air as their breath had to offer.
Then, before Grillby could do what he did last time, Gaster looped his elbow around Grillby’s neck, and pulled them both to the floor. It was a loud, ungraceful fall, limbs going just about everywhere, making a right racket that’d startle anyone into thinking there was a fight coming.
“Gaster!” The yell was punctuated by a punch to his side, but Gaster only had laughter to give in return, perched as he was now on his fire. He grinned down. Grillby glared back up at him, but it was all bluster for bein surprised.
“Had to pay you back for last time, you see.” Gaster explained, sounding not even a little bit sorry and not moving no matter how Grillby shifted - settled - against the floor boards, finally accepting his fate.
“C’mere then, make up for interrupting our dance,” Grillby growled, something playful behind the rumble that Gaster bent willingly to, ready to follow his fire.
The music played on, gentle and slow.

「 the introduction 」
Marti is the youngest child of 4 with three older brothers. She works for her family's company as a music producer.
To say her family's status has impacted her life in a positive way is an understatement. She attended a fancy private Catholic school growing up, drove nice cars, and general lived a pretty comfortable lifestyle due to her family's money.
Her mom was a backup singer in her day and Marti's dad was a musician in a semi-famous band (managed by Applause, obviously, and then transitioned into the role of COO once he settled down and started raising a family.
Marti's brothers all ended up doing something musical, whether it was playing in a band or starting a singing career. She's the only one who isn't actively performing, but she still fell in love with the industry. Going to watch her older brothers record in the studio was always her favorite, and that's where she got her start.
Marti applied for and attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in London to study music production. She probably could've gone without college with the family connections and having grown up around the industry, but she wanted to really be the best of the best.
Three years after leaving for London, Marti returned home openly bisexual, engaged to a British man, and ready to set fire to the industry she'd grown to miss in her time overseas. Unfortunately, things aren't always what they seem. Marti caught her fiancé in bed with someone else not once but two different times, and she quickly learned he had only proposed in hopes of her helping him land a deal with Applause.
To recover from the humiliation of giving two and a half years of her life to a man not even worth another moment, Marti threw herself into her work, establishing a reputation in the industry for pushing the envelope whenever possible. If you've got the safety net of your family's legacy to catch you, why would you be afraid to take your shot?
「 deeper dive 」
This girl is a smidge terrified of turning thirty because that feels like an adult age and she considers herself very much Not An Adult.
Marti tends to fight to work on projects she thinks are going to be game-changers. She usually opts for female artists, songs or projects that will allow her to flex her creative muscle, or anything that's going to cause a scene or challenge the industry.
Marti's using her mother's surname both personally and professionally mostly because she really loves supporting Latinas and also because she wants to make sure nobody can say she just got her job because she's a Cabrera.
She's definitely a "Stick it to the Man!" kind of gal, and she has no problems pointing out flaws in a male-dominated industry that rarely takes women like her seriously.
You'll often find her dancing in a studio during playback and generally always having a good time! She loves to make the process fun and exciting.
People at Applause whisper that she's only got the job because of her father, but really, she's a balance of hardworking and talented on top of the nepo baby status.
Do. Not. Bring. Up. Her. Ex. She trashes him at every possible opportunity, including loudly talking trash over his songs when they play at a bar. Things did not end well, obviously, and she's a firm believer that the man is the spawn of Satan.
Marti is determined to never find herself in a serious relationship again, and she isn't one to really do dates but she loves a good hook up. Notorious for asking people not to catch feelings because she will ghost them if they do.

The Purported Perils of Polybius
While early video games like Space Invaders, Pong, and Pac-Man are familiar to most people, hardly anyone remembers Polybius.
A scant few descriptions of the game have turned up over the years. Most amount to little more than vague memories of an abstract shooting game released in 1981. The graphics, cutting-edge at the time, should have garnered it more recognition, but the games appeared in only a few Portland-area arcades (possibly in Beaverton and Hillsboro). Official-looking men in black suits were said to stand silently within sight of the machines, observing players. On occasion, they would access the machines to collect data rather than quarters-precisely what kind of data, nobody seems to know.
Why was a possibly state-of-the-art game so poorly distributed, and why were mysterious agents keeping watch over it?
Whispers soon circulated that Polybius was an experimental mind-control device. A few minutes of zapping enemies would trigger a special strobe of light and/or on-screen activity designed to disrupt the player's brain waves. Teenagers allegedly became unwitting guinea pigs for some sort of conspiratorial psi-war research. Many wound up, it was said, either amnesic, catatonic, or hopelessly insane.
Rational explanations were offered: Polybius was really a prototype of Tempest, a game that fits the hazy descriptions of Polybius rather well. Tempest was released by Atari in 1981, using a new video technology composed of strange, angular objects flipping and crawling at a furious pace across geometric playing fields.
The theory went that, while playing Tempest supposed prototype, an epileptic youth had a seizure from starting at the colorful video mayhem. This speculation is valid only insofar as strong visual stimuli are indeed known to trigger epileptic seizures. Word of the incident may have spread, eventually developing into the rumors of a mind-control experiment.
A few years ago, a person calling Steven Roach offered another explanation via the Internet. He claimed to have cofounded a German software company, hired by a South American firm, to develop a video game that would showcase an advanced proprietary graphics technology. According to Roach, the game was test-marketed in the Portland area because of demographics. Company representatives briefly hung around to evaluate player reactions to Polybius, explaining where the stories of "men in black" came from.
It's highly doubtful that a game developer would release a prototype to arcades for "testing" purposes. And why would South American and German business partners test-market a game in Portland instead of somewhere closer to home?
Rare and mysterious-and possibly nonexistent-Polybius has captured the imaginations of many gamers over the years. Pictures of a purported arcade cabinet and a single image of the supposed title screen have made the rounds but have been met with some skepticism. At least one independent Polybius "remake" has been produced, either from memory or the creators' own inspired a low-budget independent film titled VectorZone.
Maybe Polybius really existed. Maybe it really was a sinister mind-control device. On the other hand, maybe it's just a fictional cautionary tale devised by some misguided crusader, the video game equivalent of heavy metal music leading to teen suicide, or comic books causing juvenile delinquency.
The overriding message of the legend is clear though: Video games will fry your brain.

Ride to the New Ace Cafe in New Hope 50 - 60 bikes made it to the first Vintage Moto Meet at the new Ace Cafe in New Hope, PA. From the NY/NJ metro area you can get there by simply finding and following US Route 202 and arrive at the Ace's doorstep. Or, via backroads (from NJCR 519), as I detail in this video. Take my backroads -- please! Lots of Triumphs at the Moto Meet, including an X-75 Hurricane, and some sweet Honda CB750s, the bike that put Triumph in a waiting grave. But all is forgiven, yes? Depends on your age. The video features a short interview with Jimmy Lam, the proud owner of the Ace. Music: Hillsboro Rain by The Surf Guitar Villains

Lima Dulce
Today, I over-extended my stay at the Supermercados Mexico in Hillsboro, Oregon. I stopped in for taco shells and couldn’t help leaving with an arm full of goodies. Using my phone translator I found that the “lima dulce” are sweet lemons. These look delicious to try in a cup of hot tea. Lima dulce-sweet lemon The store was lively with cultural music playing, and hanging fiesta…
