My take is of course the Swedish Literature teacher knew! She’s not stupid, and neither one of them is being particularly subtle in this conversation.

She probably chuckled to herself the first day of the project, when she realized both Wilhelm and Simon had picked the same book: Karin Boye’s queer coming of age novel.

To be perfectly honest, I found 3.06 a bit of a letdown. All Wilhelm’s problems won’t magically disappear just because he’s abdicating. And I found Kristina’s acquiescence deeply implausible. If someone has acted one way for 17 episodes, it’s tough to believe they’re magically a reformed character in the eighteenth episode.

There were a lot of things I really liked about the episode, don’t get me wrong. But for me, the entire third season didn’t hang together the way the first two seasons did. This last episode felt like such an abrupt tonal transition from the darkness of 3.01 through 3.05.

I loved that the boys (and Sara and Felice) got a happy ending. But I was hoping for….more. This ending didn’t feel entirely earned to me. The first 5 episodes of the season dealt with the downward spiral so well, and then they tried to abruptly bring everything back up again in a single episode.

Apologies if I’m going against the general zeitgeist here. But at this point I’m simultaneously relieved my four faves all got a happy ending, and feeling let down. Because they patched everything up in the space of an hour, and it was a rush.

That said, there were things I thought were spot on. Sara and Felice were note perfect. Nils and Vincent being dismayed about August’s promotion to working royal was great. And Stella and Fredrika being sapphic, but still being classist, snobby bitches. Being queer doesn’t automatically turn someone into a nice person.

But in terms of the central pairing, I’m feeling a bit let down. Like they didn’t quite earn their happy ending and I’m not quite sure it’ll really stick in the long term.

I have so many questions about the practicalities of boarding schools and the internet is rather unhelpful in finding answers and now I keep getting adverts for boarding schools lmao.

Have any of your followers been to one? I was wondering how things like laundry/haircuts/planned doctor's appointments work? Like has Wille ever done his own laundry or hoovering? His room always seems suspiciously clean. (Side note: do you think Wille has ever done household chores or cooking?) Or what happens if a pupil has is sick with a bug? Do they have to go to the house parent to get a day off or do they need a dr's note? Are house parents also regular teachers too? If so who would look after a sick pupil during the day? And do boarding schools have their own in house doctor? Or would a pupil need to visit the GP in the nearest town?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions but anyway hope the current negativity you've been recieving will get better ❤️

No, wait, because if Hillerska had enough money to give Sara a grant, why on god’s green earth did they not offer it to August before the break?

Like they knew he didn’t have money, they knew he was going to get kicked out, they had meetings about what to do, and they didn’t think to, I don’t know, tell him to apply for that grant? Or just give it to him?

WHAT WAS THE REASON?

Like I hate August so much, but those adults absolutely had it out for him. They magically found enough money to board a student a month after literally kicking him out of school?!

so i'm like a somewhat casual young royals fan and the new season dropped yesterday and even though i haven't seen all of it yet, i have to say the best thing they've done this season is show that wilhelm is still steeped in the views of the monarchy and nobility and the highest class and that its difficult for him to make that ideological switch and acknowledge that it actually is on him to do something. i think the main fan perception was that wilhelm obviously knows what a difference he can make and that it's easy for him to become an advocate and switch up his views. i love that the show illustrates that in the end he is a part of the system and benefits from it and he genuinely can't see the true wrong with it. it makes for a better and more complex storyline for him and i love it.

Late night YR thoughts inspired by the posts I’ve seen about IRL Swedish boarding school culture: one of Maddie’s lines that lives rent-free in my brain is the one where she’s like “can’t believe this school costs $20k a year and yet the showers are still cold!” I’m paraphrasing, but I think I have the $20k right.

Anyway. Based on things I know about the private school scene in the the US, that’s still less than half the tuition Maddie would be paying for an equivalently elite American private school in DC, New York, or somewhere else in the Northeast. I’m sure the west coast is similar! And those are the day schools. I’m not as familiar with US boarding schools but I assume they cost even more.

Have Maddie’s parents just found a secret way of saving money? Do they need to save money if they can already afford a few plane tickets a year and Hillerska boarding fees? What even is going on?

In all honesty, I’m really not that pressed about Hillerska being forced to close because, in reality, schools that endorse/knowingly let fester and grow these party cultures that are often times racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and downright dangerous SHOULD be held accountable and closed!

I don’t know if it’s as commonplace in Sweden, but where I live in the US a large majority of colleges (private AND public) have this problem that’s existed for honestly 50+ years. Frat culture, hazing, and extreme college party culture SHOULD NOT EXIST!

For anyone getting excited over Hillerska being shut down by the school inspectorate, hold your glee. Lundsberg Skola is the Swedish boarding school Hillerska seems to based on. After years and years of warnings and fines re bullying and hazing, Lundsbergs was shut down by the school inspectorate on August 28, 2013.

It was supposed to stay shut down for a minimum of 6 months. Instead the school hired expensive lawyers, appealed, and were allowed to reopen on September 6, 2013. So it only took 9 days before they found a loophole. One can assume Hillerska will do likewise and everybody (except the third years) will be back in class in the second half of August when the new school year starts.

At Lundsbergs, the headmaster was fired and the entire board of governors resigned after the shut down. But they soon regrouped, hired a new headmaster, appointed new alumni and parents to the board, and debuted a shiny new anti-bullying policy. Whether it actually worked is unlikely. But the parents are mostly alumni themselves. They would’ve gone through the same brutal hazings and wouldn’t think they’d be such a big deal.

Here’s the Wikipedia page, scroll down to the Controversy section for the details on the abuse and bullying that the school was turning a blind eye to. The final investigation, the one that triggered the (temporary) shutdown, was when the younger boys were burned with hot irons by older boys at an initiation. One boy was burned so badly he needed to be hospitalized. The hospital called the local police, who called the school inspectorate. Note: that boy’s parents were not the ones to notify either the police or the school inspectorate.

I attended boarding school in the late 90s/early 00s as a non-boarder. If no one better qualified volunteers, then I'll happily answer the questions in the previous boarding school confession and any others which might come up.
