Hidden Gems of India: Unveiling the Unexplored Treasures of the North and South
Introduction: Are you tired of treading the beaten path and following the hordes of tourists? Do you yearn for something unique, unexplored, and just a tad sarcastic? Well, you're in for a treat! Welcome to the world of underrated destinations in India, where we'll navigate the road less traveled with a twist of humor and a sprinkle of sarcasm.
Why should I care about underrated destinations in India? Well, dear traveler, if you enjoy being herded like cattle in overcrowded tourist spots and waiting in never-ending lines, then this article might not be for you. But if you crave unique experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and a dash of sarcasm, keep reading.
Can you please tell me where to find these hidden gems? Of course! But remember, if you're looking for signs pointing to these destinations every few meters, you won't find them. That's kind of the point, right? Here are some uncharted territories:
Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh: Where Google Maps Gets Confused Let's kick things off in the remote corners of Arunachal Pradesh, where even Google Maps takes a coffee break. Tawang, nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, is a place where your phone signal plays hide and seek, but the landscapes play no games. With the Tawang Monastery as your starting point, you'll wonder why you didn't ditch the crowded hill stations sooner.
History: Tawang is not just a picturesque destination; it's also steeped in history. It's home to the famous Tawang Monastery, which is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second-largest in the world. The monastery, dating back to the 17th century, offers a glimpse into the region's rich Buddhist heritage.
Culture and People: The Apatani tribe, the indigenous people of Tawang, add a unique cultural flavor to the region. Their traditional customs and festivals offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the local way of life. The warm hospitality of the locals will make you feel like you've found a second home in this remote corner of India.
How to Reach: Getting to Tawang is an adventure in itself. You can take a bus or shared taxi from Bomdila or Tezpur. Alternatively, you could hire a cab from either of these points and let the spirit of adventure guide you through the winding roads and breathtaking vistas.
Keylong, Himachal Pradesh: When the Journey Becomes the Destination Forget about those overcrowded hill stations. Keylong, situated in the Lahaul and Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh, is a secret paradise for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. The journey to Keylong is as captivating as the destination itself, with treacherous mountain passes, gushing rivers, and jaw-dropping landscapes.
Adventure Activities: Keylong offers a range of adventure activities for adrenaline junkies. You can indulge in trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, and even skiing during the winter months. For those seeking a more laid-back experience, there are also options for camping, birdwatching, and simply basking in the serene beauty of nature.
Monasteries and Temples: Keylong is dotted with ancient monasteries and temples that hold great religious and cultural significance. The Kardang Monastery, Shashur Monastery, and Tayul Monastery are a few notable ones that offer a glimpse into the region's spiritual heritage. The Triloknath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is another must-visit site for devotees and architecture enthusiasts alike.
How to Reach: Keylong is accessible by road from Manali and Leh. The journey is not for the faint-hearted, as it involves navigating treacherous mountain roads and high-altitude passes. However, the stunning vistas and unique experiences along the way make it all worth it.
Majuli, Assam: An Island of Culture and Natural Beauty Nestled in the Brahmaputra River, Majuli is the world's largest river island and a hidden gem in the state of Assam. This tranquil island is blessed with lush greenery, serene riverside landscapes, and a vibrant cultural heritage.
Satras and Cultural Heritage: Majuli is renowned for its Satras, which are institutions of Vaishnavite culture and learning. These Satras preserve ancient traditions, music, dance, and performing arts. Exploring the Satras and witnessing the colorful festivals and dance performances is a captivating experience that immerses you in Assam's rich cultural heritage.
Flora and Fauna: Majuli is not just an island of cultural treasures but also a biodiversity hotspot. The wetlands and marshes surrounding the island attract a wide variety of migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. You can also spot endangered species like the Gangetic River dolphin.
Badami, Karnataka: Badami, situated in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, is a historical and architectural gem that often remains overshadowed by more famous heritage sites. This town is renowned for its stunning rock-cut cave temples, which are a testament to India's rich cultural heritage. Start your exploration at the Badami Cave Temples, and you'll wonder why you didn't delve into this archaeological treasure trove sooner.
Architectural Marvels: The Badami Cave Temples, dating back to the 6th century, are carved out of sandstone cliffs and feature intricate sculptures and impressive architecture.
Historical Significance: Badami was once the capital of the Chalukya dynasty and holds a significant place in Indian history. Explore the ancient fort and the Agastya Lake for a deeper connection to the past.
How to Reach: Badami is accessible by road from cities like Bangalore and Hubli. The nearest railway station is in Badami, making it convenient for travelers interested in exploring this historical marvel.
We have a lot of opportunities to witness the hidden wonders of our homeland. It's a reminder that the world is full of surprises, waiting for those willing to step off the beaten path. Boeing F-15EX completes first phase of integrated testing
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/14/2023 - 11:00am in Military
The F-15EX recently completed the first phase of its initial operational test and evaluation (IT&E) program with the launch of an AGM-158 joint air-surface missile (JASSM), the highest-range air-to-ground missile in the U.S. Department of Defense combat inventory.
The JASSM has a range of about 230 miles, according to a U.S. Air Force information leaflet.
The F-15EX is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft to undergo an integrated program of tests and evaluations. The combination of the IOT&E and DOT&E effort is unique to the program, in that the existing test data of the legacy F-15C/D and F-15E can be compared with the data from the new EX, with a special focus on the new features unique to EX, such as its advanced processor and fly-by-wire control system. The EX also has more weapon stations than the F-15E, allowing it to carry more war material.
In November 2022 tests, the F-15EX demonstrated that it can carry up to 12 AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles.
“Proving the ability of the F-15EX to employ three JASSMs after witnessing the validation of the air-to-air domain paper with a load of 12 AMRAAM that it can fire is incredible,” said Major Calvin Conner, commander of the F-15 division of the 85º Test and Evaluation Squadron. "The firepower that four F-15EX jets bring to a combatant commander is tremendous."
JASSM was launched during the Combat Hammer exercise, held at Hill Air Base in Utah in August. The shot was performed simultaneously with the 53ª Wing Weapon System Evaluation Program, which required a collaborative effort between the 83º and 86º Fighter Weapon Squadrons. The details of the shot - the targets, ranges, etc. - are confidential, but have been strongly evaluated, from the construction of the weapon to the use and analysis of the missile routes, to the target.
"This test shows innovation and results in the rapid delivery of state-of-the-art capabilities to the fighter. That's exactly what our fighters need from us," said Mark Sears, vice president of Boeing Fighters. "The F-15EX is the most affordable and immediate way to renew the capacity and upgrade the capabilities of the U.S. Air Force and we are ready to deliver additional aircraft later this year."
With Phase I of the F-15EX IT&E completed, the data from this phase will be analyzed for the final report to guide a total production decision determination in the coming months.
The U.S. Air Force plans to buy 104 F-15EX fighters, although this number could rise to 110 if some changes to the 2024 fiscal year defense bill are enacted.
Boeing begins delivering fighters with combat capability to U.S. Air Force squads later this year.

Munnar Tourism
The Indian state of Kerala has the town of Munnar in the Western Ghats mountain range. A hill station that served as a former retreat for the aristocracy of the British Raj. It is surrounded by undulating hills that are peppered with tea plantations that date back to the late 19th century. Lakkam Waterfalls, trekking routes. And the 2,695m-tall Anamudi Peak can all be found in Eravikulam National Park. Which is also the home of the critically endangered Nilgiri tahr.
The endless stretch of tea plantations and undulating hills in Munnar make it appear like a postcard. Many tourists adore Munnar, a fantastic vacation spot in Kerala. It is the most well-liked hill station, and honeymooners, families, and lovers of nature all favor it.
Munnar, which lies in Kerala's Idukki District, is responsible for producing some of the best tea and spices in India. All types of tourists can enjoy a variety of experiences at this must-see location. Getting here might be a wonderful experience as well.
Visit the Eravikulam National Park in Munnar to see the abundant wildlife there as well as the Nilgiri Tahr. Additionally, there is the family-friendly Wonder Valley Adventure and Amusement Park. Learn more about the top hotels, must-do activities, and popular tourist destinations.
Munnar also known as "Kashmir of south India".
Munro established the North Travancore Land Planting & Agricultural Society in 1878. Growing a variety of products, including cardamom, coffee, cinchona, and sisal.
It's interesting to note that A.H. Sharp planted the first tea plant here in 1880. James Finley & Company entered the tea-growing industry after a 12- to 13-year hiatus and acquired about 33 independent tea farms. Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company founded in 1897 oversee the regions with tea plantations.
Later, in 1964, James Finley & Company and the Tata group worked together. The partnership persisted until 1983, when the Tata Group bought out the Finley Company's whole stock and stakeholding. Following Munnar's tourism industry took off, drawing visitors from all over the world. The only change since then is an expansion of the tourism industry.

Munnar also referred to often as 'Kashmir of south India' is a hill station located in the southern state of Kerala situated at the height of 5200 ft. is kown for it's natural beauty and abundance of tea gardens. The climate provides the vegetation to grow uninhibited and flowers bloom in every small piece of land available to the nature in spring, one thing I observed during the trip was the predominance of violet and purple hued flowers throughout the hill station which I can not understand due to my lack of knowledge in the field of biogeography.
The beginning of march is the perfect time to visit Munnar since the sun is hot but the breeze and shade are cool and the wild flowers are in full bloom. Temperatures remain anywhere in between 21°C - 32°C depending on the height you are at and the time of the day.
It is one of the most beautiful places to explore and unwind making it suitable for all types of travellers. The best hotel to stay at with rooms overlooking Mountains and a velly from where you can see the sunrise is 'The Munnar Queen' located near the town of Chithirapuram, it is a budget hotel with great rooms, service and food ( the photos attached above were taken from the balcony of my room in the same hotel at dawn).
Top places to visit when in munnar:
1. Tata tea museum
2. Mattupetty Dam and lake(jet skiing is available here)
3. The rose gardens
4. Photo point and eco point
5. Watch Kalaripayattu ( it is a form of Indian martial art original to Kerala) at Kalari Kshetra.
6. Visit local tea gardens
( caution: wear shoes that cover your feet since there may be leeches that stick to your feet here and there, I am talking from personal experience and believe me they are hard to get rid of and the hirudin(an anti coagulant) present in their saliva makes you bleed for a long time after you pluck them out)
7. Explore towns that come along the way and eat at the local restaurants if you really want to taste the authentic food ; both vegetarian and nonvegiterian restaurants are available but to find the good vegetarian ones you'll have to search hard enough.
