One of the craziest skies I have ever witnessed....... I walked by the window, my jaw hit the floor, something audible came out of my mouth, I have no idea what.....I grabbed my camera, I adjusted my settings as fast as I could, I raised the lens and captured this......Just as a flock of red-winged blackbirds flew through the scene... It was about 15 minutes before official sunset, and the sun angle was just right to throw shadows from Longs Peak and Mount Meeker into the sky. I have seen something similar before, but not quite this crazy. Nikon Z9 with Nikkor 180-600mm F5.6-6.3 lens at 280mm, ISO 80, 1/500sec, handheld. Northern Colorado 1-29-2024(Best viewed large for details. :: [Hilary Bralove]

Grassland Galaxy by Hilary Bralove We decided to head east into dark skies on the Pawnee grassland in northern Colorado on July 9 2019. We spent a few hours looking for some type of interesting foreground. The only thing that seemed interesting was a road heading south straight into the milky way galaxy. There were a few obstacles to overcome, namely a western sky with half a moon! We knew the moon phase and thought it might help illuminate the foreground, which it did. We also had a few storm clouds in the sky which just added a bit of interest to the horizon. Although we were using some low level LED lights to help illuminate the road, it was actually unnecessary with the abundance of moonlight. This image is a hand blend of 2 photos. One photo was taken for the landscape exposure and the other for the sky. The landscape image was shot at F11, ISO 64, 1/2 second. The sky and milky way image came from 15 images stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker for noise reduction. Those images were all shot at 10 seconds, within 2 seconds of each other, F2.8, ISO 5000. I then hand blended the 2 final images using Lightroom and Photoshop. The sky images were taken at about 12:30am, and the landscape was taken after sunset with the moon providing light from the sky. There was also an abundance of light pollution coming from the west near the front range of northern Colorado. The tripod remained in the same place for the entire shoot. Nikon D850 with Nikkor 14-24mmF2.8 lens at 14mm. https://flic.kr/p/2gwFyui
