Canadian comic actor Billy Van was supposed to be the next big thing, but it never quite happened.
Best remembered in Canada as the star of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Van moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s to join the cast of Sonny and Cher.
But to the astonishment of those who knew him, he spent the decade living in a sordid motel at 6757 Sunset Blvd.
Alan Hamel, a Canadian contemporary, recalled. “Hollywood was not kind to Billy. He was invited there by Allan Blye and Chris Bearde to do The Sonny and Cher Show. He was really good in it, but he was living in this sleazy hotel in Hollywood. I mean, it was a really sleazy part of Hollywood. One night there was a knock on his door. He opened the door and two strangers came in and beat the crap out of him. Apparently, it was really bad. He couldn’t wait to get back to Toronto after that. I talked to him quite a bit after that and he was a different guy. It changed him.”

Loved this show so much growing up!
It’s why I love Vincent Price 🥰
The librarian was the best skit, IMHO.
Loved Grizelda (close second) and the Wolfman.
Oh, and the professor too!

Sad news. And I don't care that he was actually an American, he was as much a Canadian TV icon as John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and the others from SCTV. RIP

(Too bad we never got a crossover between Count Floyd and the Count from Hilarious House of Frightenstein!)

One thing
One item in view: a small, squeaky yellow duckie
One wish for you: May your eyes be opened by the wonderful
One project to do: Write one line on a piece of paper, pass it to another who does the same, have them send it onwards til the paper is filled, then have the last person mail the paper back to you.
One observation: There is something so deliciously surreal about Vincent Price reading poetry to children. (The Hilarious House of Frightenstein (a.k.a. House of Horrors))
