New Helikon Tex Bergen Backpack and essentials pouch for my canteen. One hike. Scrambled up a hillside in thick brush. Pack stayed on. Essentials pouch was easy enough to manage. It's a nice small day pack for one person with a number of storage options and molle attachment points for more pouches if you need them. You can strap gear to the top and bottom which I love. Tent and sleeping gear right there. 18L main compartment two side 1L compartments and a front 2L compartment. Lots of pockets in both the pack and essentials bag. Made of heavy Cordura with what looks like very high quality stitching qith thick thread. Looks well made. 👌 #helikon #helikontex #helikonbergen #bergen #bergenbackpack #shoulderbag #bushcraft #bushcraftbackpack #bushcraftgear #hiking #hikingbackpack #hikingpack #hikinggear https://www.instagram.com/p/CTurtZVpGeR/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Dog Day’s of Summer” -Poor #TinyDog was trying so hard to enjoy #thegreatoutdoors but the weather here in Western #NorthCarolina just won’t cooperate. Somehow my #CanonEOS T7i managed to get the exact moment she got beamed in the ‘noggin with fat rain drops. Had to tuck my #dog and my 📸 away in my #hikingpack and get to safety. Putting Together the 10 Pound Pack
No matter which season you hike, the last thing you want to do is carry a pack that is the same weight as you. Being dragged down while scaling a mountain can exhaust you and make a trek miserable. After hiking seriously for three years I have learned the do’s and don’ts of what to bring while climbing a long trail. The ten-pound pack includes clothing, food, and gear you may need on any given day while hiking. It includes only the things within the pack and doesn’t include the clothes and shoes that you would already have on you. Typically, having on a good pair of hiking boots and tall socks at the start of the hike would be the most practical way to safely climb. Also, depending on the season, you might be hiking in a t-shirt and shorts or a thermal long sleeve and comfortable pants. Below is a list of items for the ten-pound pack, some essential and some helpful, to help you hike safely and effectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Woman’s Nike Frees 5.0 (Sneakers): Obviously not everyone has the same exact type of sneakers but whenever I prepare for a hike I make sure to pack my sneakers. These sneakers in particular are very light weight which makes them perfect for not being heavy or taking up much space. I pack them because when I reach the top of a mountain I enjoy sitting for a while and taking in the scenery after the climb I just made. For anyone who has ever hiked you know that hiking boots aren’t always the most comfortable shoes in the world, but they do save you from a broken ankle while working up mounds of rocks. I switch my shoes at the top and let my feet breathe for a little while. If you’re going somewhere that is muddy you might want to pack a plastic bag to throw them in before you descend back down.
Two 25oz Camelbak Water Bottle (full): This one may seem pretty obvious but water is extremely important to bring during any physical activity, especially hiking. Your body begins to be dehydrated before you start experiencing the signs. When I began my interest in hiking I used to bring one tiny plastic Poland Springs water bottle. I quickly caught on to the fact that I was getting tired before the rest of my friends and felt light headed and sick during our descents. Now I bring two of the Camelbak water bottles filled to the top with ice and water. Filling your bottle with ice is important no matter what season. Once you drink your water and the ice melts you will have more water in your bottle than if you just filled it with water. I found these plastic bottles to be more effective than the tin ones because they don’t weigh down my pack as much. They also have straws in them so you never have to worry about losing the top or unscrewing it if you are climbing.
Woman’s Pullover Hoodie with high neck: It doesn’t matter what season it is; the top of a 4,000ft mountain is going to be windy. Even if you get hot while hiking it is important to pack a sweatshirt for when you decide to rest at the top. Your body temperature drops immensely when at rest, even if you were sweating on the trek up. I prefer the pullovers with the high neck because it covers more and you can pull it over your face if you start to feel windburn. The sweatshirt in particular that I recommend is The North Face pullover, it is a stretch fleece so it keeps you warm but also is extremely light for the warmer fall or spring days. I recommend rolling it up and wrapping a string or rubber band around it to maximize space in your pack.
1 pair of Wool Socks: Wool socks are important while hiking and having an extra pair is essential. Even if the park rangers tell you the mountain is fairly dry there are always hidden mud spots just waiting to be stepped in. Having tall wool socks keeps your feet from getting bad blisters with your hiking boots. Obviously, in the cooler temperatures it keeps your feet warm as well. If it is warmer out having an extra pair is beneficial, at the top you can switch into your clean pair before beginning your descent down the mountain. This also helps if your feet get sweaty on the hike up.
2 Chewy Granola Bars & 2 packs of six peanut butter crackers: This one depends on preference but having some form of nutrition is extremely important along with plenty of water. I always bring peanut butter crackers for protein and granola bars with nuts and some chocolate for a little bit of sugar. There are so many different types of nutritional bars you can bring and choosing a different snack will not affect the weight of your pack. It is important to have a nutritious meal before you begin your hike so you have enough energy. Having snacks along the way keeps that energy from dropping and can keep you from getting a headache or feeling sick.
Bic Cigarette Lighter: It is always important to hike prepared. Having a lighter can help you in many different situations, not just survival ones. If you find a camp group on the mountain you could start a coal grill with it. Also, if you need to disinfect anything you can do it with the heat from the flame. A lighter will take up little to no space and chances are you may never need it but it is important to be prepared for any outstanding circumstances.
Waterproof Solar Flashlight: Just like most of the items listed it doesn’t really matter what brand or type you get, it is all by preference. Having a flashlight is essential even if it is light out. You never know what you will come across on a hike. There have been a few hikes I went on without one and came across caves that I would have explored if I could see. It is also important to keep track of the time and when the sun will set, but sometimes time slips away and you find yourself on your descent while the sun is setting. The flashlight can help you signal for help or see where you are going. Having a waterproof one ensures no matter what the weather the light will work. Also having a solar powered one helps more than just having battery operated, if there is sunshine you don’t have to worry about your light dying out on you.
Winter Beanie: Just like the sweatshirt a beanie is helpful when reaching the top of the mountain when the wind is blowing. Depending on what season it is, having a beanie might also be helpful to keep you warm while hiking. Even if you get hot while climbing it is important to keep your ears and your head warm. I like to take my bigger hikes in the fall so I always either pack a hat or wear one.
Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen (SPF 50) & Off Insect Repellant: I am grouping these two together because they are both applied to your skin. No matter what time of year you should always apply sunscreen. The amount of times I have gotten sunglass tans in the winter is sad. The rays from the sun are strong enough to burn you even if it is cold out. It is important to apply before you begin your hike and, if you sweat a lot, when you’re at the top. Having a sunburn is painful and can lead to dizziness and headaches, both of which could leave you seriously injured while attempting to climb. Also, when hiking you’re going to be in and out of the woods and in the woods are bugs. Applying bug spray before you even start to climb is the smartest thing you can do, especially if it is during the summer. There are many different types of insects that can bite you and make you extremely uncomfortable. These are two easy things to prevent a hike from being more difficult than it has to be.
Swiss Army Knife: Having any kind of knife on you while hiking is great, especially if you decide to go alone (which I do not recommend). You can cut branches out of your way if you need to, help cut string or rope if you need it. It is also a good source of protection, again it is always better to be prepared for something to go wrong just in case you ever find yourself in that situation.
North Face Jester Backpack:  Finally a backpack, any hiking backpack will do but I recommend ones from L.L.Bean or The North Face because they specialize in hiking. The backpack I currently use has two water bottle holders one large pocket and a smaller one for any loose items. I usually put clothes and food in the large pocket and my knife, repellant, sunscreen, lighter, and flashlight in the smaller pocket. Whichever bag you use, just make sure the straps are comfortable and there are not a lot of strings hanging off of it as they can get caught on branches or sharp rocks.
*This list may be different depending on weather conditions and what type of hike you are taking but this is a basic list and a way to keep your pack from becoming the same weight as you with unnecessary gear.
