Gender Confusion and Flag Altering Making matters more interesting, the upcoming IRAN vs USA match (today) almost became a firestorm over the weekend after Iran demanded the US team be kicked out of the World Cup over an “altered flag” controversy. A Saturday social media post across the official social media accounts of the US Soccer Federation (USSF) – including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – featured an altered version of the Iranian national flag without the Islamic emblem in the center. US Soccer said it was to show solidarity with the ongoing 'anti-hijab' protest movement which has been raging for over two months inside Iran. Details, as usual, are sketchy at best but one thing we know for sure is that US soccer team coach Gregg Berhalter apologized to the Iranian team over the altered flag controversy. However, he asserted that he and the team had no involvement with the weekend social media post which unleashed a firestorm of controversy. Riiiight. FIFA has not indicated whether it will take any punitive action. But, for Iran, Qatar 2022 continues to be one of the most politicized World Cups in recent memory... The point is this…Sports are supposed to be a great peacemaker. So why can't they let sports be sports? muslim women's day: autonomy

Happy belated Muslim Women’s Day! This day has become so important for me because it came at a confusing point in my life where I was really unsure of my identity as a Muslim woman. Seeing the accomplishments of Muslim women celebrated in the mainstream was so affirming for me in my journey towards finding what I wanted to do in my life. This year’s theme was all about autonomy which is something that is very sacred to me because no matter where you are in the world, women’s rights to her body and identity are constantly being threatened. And I know I’m obviously late to the conversation regarding autonomy and how it applies to Muslim women, but thinking about this sentiment over the weekend has given me a new perspective.

One of the biggest reasons why I wear a hijab, which makes me visibly uslim, is because it gives me control—and autonomy—over the way my body is viewed and treated in society. It’s not so much so that guys don’t stare at my ass, but more so that my looks don’t play a role in how I’m perceived or treated. In our historically misogynistic society, a woman’s appearance plays a heavy stake in her value and worth in progressing the ideals and agendas that men want to assert; though the dynamics are changing, for the longest time, women were used as a tool rather than an asset on a heavily male team to instill values that contradicted those of women’s that preached empowerment and independence.

Regardless of how outdated Western people perceive my hijab to be, I wear it to free myself of any assumptions or labels a man or woman can use to limit my existence.

The paradoxical irony here is that as a hijabi in America, I already am boxed into an oppressive label that undoes all my efforts to regain autonomy over my existence. Stereotypes about my liberation or my timidness, regardless of how false, are one of the first things assumed about me and other hijabis in the country which takes away our autonomy. Because on top of controlling the way people use my body as a tool, I also have to control the way people view my lifestyle by constantly proving to people that I’m just as worthy as my less-confusing counterpart.

There is always a piece of Muslim women, and women in general, that keeps us tied down to the perceptions of others because no matter how “diverse” an industry insists it’s becoming, it’s still diversifying itself under the male gaze rather than the influence of minorities whose worldview is more authentic than the damaging and perverse perspective of the majority of men.

And on the hot-button topic of diversity and representation, the version of diversity that the rest have chosen to display (using minorities without their voice) is more damaging than helpful to the careers of hijabis who are in the public eye. We have seen a surge in hijabi models, entrepreneurs, and influencers that have changed the western world’s stagnant view of Muslim women for the better. Yet as companies make the effort to hire these women as the faces of their campaigns, it’s harder and harder to discern whether the intentions of said company is exploitative or supportive. There is no denying that in the corporate world, diversity has always been and is still a tool and object molded to their desire.

Just because the topic of diversity has been brought up a lot more than it was ten years ago, the same intentions and efforts are at work to keep minority voices out of the conversation and minority faces in their marketing; the fact that people don’t think that Muslim women are oppressed doesn’t and shouldn’t take away from the fact that our humanity has not been restored and instead more people are taking advantage of us instead. Rather than shifting the culture through these women’s own organic efforts, the exact companies who have been the reason for our dehumanization and degradation are using us in the same exact way, but now it’s not in obvious ways like it was before (excluding Muslim women from conversations).

Now, we are losing our autonomy when we abide by the terms and conditions set by men (still) whose interests aren’t aligned with our visions for empowerment, and instead interested in the profit that they can attain from our community. The same systems are still at play even though the means for it have changed. Instead of primarily exploiting women’s bodies as a means for profit—although this is still an extremely pervasive issue in our culture—our society is focusing its efforts on exploiting the diversity and vulnerability of minorities. These large companies, whose products and campaigns heavily influence our culture, know that without their guidance or support, Muslim women will be generally disregarded in the mainstream. It’s sad that in order to gain support, one has to commercialize themselves and make themselves palatable to the superficial needs of Western society, yet we keep giving it power and enable this system’s methods to maintain a monolithic world.

We have seen the influence Muslim women have just through the spaces they have carved for themselves without the “help” of large companies, and we can’t afford to lose the authenticity that has made their brand attractive because we won’t ever be able to branch out from under the wings of the misogynistic media we still enable today.

Obviously this is not to say that Muslim women are sell-outs, in fact all of the incredible work that I have seen in just the past few months will have an insurmountable influence on the generation of girls to come, but we still have to be wary of the selfishness that is still prevalent in society. I know that our community is more than capable of being influential without being the face of the company that has been the most degrading of our people just to prove a point that this thing can be done, and the message that it would send to our culture that our values and humanity won’t be compromised will dismantle the destructive loopholes that have kept ignorant people in power.

I hate that this all sounded more negative than optimistic, haha, so I’m going to share some of my favorite Muslim women who have inspired my voice a lot recently.

Hello again.

So, provoked by a card from a friend, I realised it had been over six months since I last posted. I'm okay, despite real world events sucking throughout 2019, health is pretty much the same, hands are a little worse (a Lego kit I'd put off building for ten months was a bit of a struggle) and I honestly lose track of how long it's been since I last did something (posting here, tested for health stuff, bought things and not gotten round to wstching/playing them) but I've also come to terms with my health, made some adjustments and just get on with things as best I can.

So in 2020, going to try and post at least every couple of weeks here. Finally upgraded to a good tablet, so can access Tumbdlr easier now. So, a few important things from last six months.

Just before Halloween, Oscar who'd been with us for seventeen-and-a-half years sadly passed away. She was the best cat.

At the beginning of December, April became part of the family, she's a two year old adopted from a local shelter, she's settled in quickly and I always look forward to visiting every couple of weeks and seeing her.

Also got out and voted in December, overall result was bad but our county saw sense and voted the SNP back in after th e last election's bizarre result.

Christmas was the usual chilled out few days visiting the folks, got some useful stuff, a new hat and a lovely book from my brother.

I just got back from a another London trip, down to see Pro Wrestling EVE again with some other things over the weekend. Saw Rise Of Skywalker on the Friday night which I really enjoyed overall. Saturday morning visited the Cartoon Museum which had so much excellent art. On Sunday spent the morning and half-the afternoon at the Camden Markets.

Then a trip to the London Dungeon which was fantastic, A walk through the darker side of London with various scenes acted out in front of you, a couple of short rides, a Brian Blessed projection, great laughs and great effects, well worth the trip.

The weekend's highlight was of course Wrestle Queendom 3, three hours of fantastic wrestling and a meet and greet where we met most of the performers, we were less nervous this time so had some nice chats with them. Best of all was meeting the wrestlers from overseas, Nor "Phoenix" Diana is a hijab wearing wrestler from Malaysia and her ring gear is amazing, like a real life suoerheroine. From Tokyo Joshi Pro we had the magical girl Yuka Sakazaki and the cutest in the world Maki Itoh, who were both great to meet.

We had second row tickets in the smaller venue so had a great view of the action, throat is still raw from all the cheering, booing, chanting, singing along and being the buzzer for the rumble match. Again, an excellent show throughout and just what we needed after a depressing couple of months.

You can be sure we'll be doing our best to get to Wrestle Queendom 4 when it comes round.

Already, my hat is full of pins and badges and only had it three weeks. :)

Was a bit of a struggle at times and I was really ill when we got back to the hotel Saturday night, to the extent I thought we might have to cancel Sunday's activities but I'd recovered enough by the morning and there was almost always somewhere for me to sit and rest for a bit if needed. We never walked too far in one go, used the tube and buses to get around mostly.

Apart from that, been upgrading things just in case my fitness for work reassessment (due in April) doesn't go well, waiting on the arrival of my first Doctor Who Blu-Ray set (Season 26, I had to) and a four hour 80's horror movie documentary called Into Dsrkness that me and my brother's names are in the credits for as we pre-ordered a collector's edition.

Can't think of anything else right now, will try to post semi-regularly and hopefully mire longer posts now I'm not using my phone. :)

A Personal Racism Issue. Can I Get Your Advice?

I'm at a bit of a loss... so I'm hoping some of you hooligans might be able to help me out. This weekend I'm tabling a gaming convention with a friend of mine (and I'll leave his name out here for reasons that will be apparent -- I'll call him X). Admittedly, I'm a comedian and a cartoonist, so a gaming convention is slightly off-brand, but I'm hoping there will be a good cross-section of people who also enjoy comedy, and at the end of Friday I've already collected 5 new subscribers to our newsletter, the Woohooligan Weekly Dick Joke Advocate.

This came about when I got an unexpected call from X about a month before the event and he mentioned in passing that he'd already booked a table for this event. I offered to share the booth with him, because I want to attend more cons and I thought I could handle the 5hr drive. I've tabled about a half-dozen cons so far, this would be his first. And although he's a relatively new friend (a year?), I didn't have the impression he was racist -- at least not overtly or knowingly so... I wouldn't associate myself with anyone who identified as "Alt-Right", I think that should be apparent from my work, of which X is aware. Dunking on these racists was part of all three of my most recent YouTube videos, and a comic I published in 2016 which appears in my recent Woohooligan Vol 2 (page 29) that I now have on the table at the event thanks to our recent Kickstarter.

What I didn't realize until I arrived at the event, is that X is selling t-shirts labelled "Fantasy Lives Matter". There are about a dozen of them, roughly half of his t-shirt designs, so for example a picture of an orc with the text "Orc Lives Matter", another for Elf, Dwarf, etc. I hoped at first that it would go unnoticed as people often don't read the text and just check out the artwork. I've already noticed one girl at the table this morning was put off. She asked me, "are you a Black Lives Matter person or an all lives matter person"? To which I responded "black lives matter... I haven't had that specific conversation with X, though I suspect he's the same"...

Apparently I was wrong, which, I realize in retrospect is what I should have expected, because I think the majority of people would have picked up on the poor taste of trivializing serious problems faced by real people. I want to say I think most people would have picked up on that faster than I did actually, since I think I'd seen these graphics before (I mean, months ago), and it just hadn't clicked in my mind, despite all the work I've done.

I tried to have a brief conversation with X about it, which went nowhere good...

Me: Hey, X. This girl just left, put off by the FLM designs... she asked if I was BLM or ALM.

X: [rolls eyes] Yeah that was my dad's big problem too, thinking people would be offended, and if they are, fuck 'em. I'm saying "all lives matter", even fictional ones.

(That last sentence is a huge problem for me, for reasons I think should be obvious.)

Me: "All lives matter" is intended to shut down people trying to address serious problems.

X: People don't know how to address problems... and to be honest, some of those people running in with the police deserve what they're getting.

(We're way into not-okay territory here and I've invested a huge amount of time and a notable amount of money in this event, and knowing now that X apparently has difficulty staying awake while driving on the freeway, I'm also concerned about his safety if I decided to just leave suddenly... but at this moment I'm not ready to get into what seems like is likely to devolve into a screaming match in front of everyone at the con.)

Me: the BLM movement only exists because there's a huge amount of injustice built into the system. When everything else is held equal, a black person on average receives 2-3 times more jail time than a white person, and that should never happen.

(I don't have reference for that specific figure on-hand -- please check my work and leave a link if you have one, whether I remembered it correctly or not. Thank you.)

X: [basically murmurred agreement]

I don't want to make any excuses for his diminishing of real-world problems, I think it's bad... I'm conflicted about how to address this problem for myself... I plan to publish photos of myself at the con, and the signs for those designs will be in the background... do I black them out? If I do that, am I enabling him?

I don't *think* he realizes what the problem is... I don't *think* he's deliberately racist. On the way back to the house from the convention he offered to buy me dinner at a shawarma place (I'd never had it -- it was good -- it actually reminded me of some southern cafeterias, although the seasoning and the decoration were a little different.)

The waitresses wore hijabs and he was familiar them (had been there many times), and treated them nice enough... though I will say that some of the things he says seem fairly insensitive in a general sense. For example, he makes a lot of objectifying comments about women, including for example, one of the shawarma waitresses, "[damn she's hot]... and great tits". (Of course, he's only seen her breasts 100% covered -- not even cleavage -- so it's a little odd to me to hear someone be so overtly objectifying of someone who's entire outward image is one of "I am not here for you to ogle".) And the whole day at the con was similar -- frequent mentions of "she's smokin' hot" or "that red head" or "I've never wanted to give wood to an elf so bad", which I tried not to encourage. (I like porn too, but my interest in potential partners isn't based on their looks.)

These are things I hadn't noticed in previous phone or online conversations. So I'm a bit conflicted... He's open enough to be friendly with the shawarma waitresses... but he's also interested in them to the point of sexual interest in women who're being very careful to be NOT sexy. So how confrontational should I be about "fantasy lives matter"?

I don't plan to share a table with him again if he's going to continue promoting them... I would hope he would eventually figure out that the phrase is likely to reduce his sales, even when a person might agree with his sentiment, because they don't want to buy a shirt that's going to get them into verbal fisticuffs with people. But this being his first event, and saying that he's already plunked down $1400 into it, it seems to me unlikely that he'll learn that soon. Though in honesty, it always feels like cold comfort to me when someone is doing the right thing only because they realize some kind of financial reward for it.

So should just not sharing tables in the future be where I leave it? Is it okay to accept that, "he's not a deliberate racist, just kind of an insensitive jerk" and just limit my involvement? As an autistic person who knows what it's like to be ostracized for being unintentionally insensitive, am I being too harsh if I say I feel like this is too much? Does that make me a hypocrite? And what about the fact that there are now photos of me in the act of affiliating myself with the creator who promoted "fantasy lives matter"?

Regardless of how it may impact my image, I'm trying to figure out what course of action will produce the best results for everyone -- that hopefully anyone who can become a better person will, regardless of how it impacts my image. Obviously I always have to think about my image, we all do, but that's a secondary concern. I feel like I should be willing to sacrifice my image if the alternative is being hypocritical, cruel, or even just unwilling to evolve or better myself.

UPDATE 9/17/2018

Maybe I should have waited until the end of the event before writing this blog, but the subject distresses me and I wanted to talk about it sooner than later. At the end of Friday, neither X or I had sold anything at the event. Saturday morning, X printed off about 4 shirts as samples to lay on the front of the table (good marketing), to show people that, "hey these pictures on the poster in the back go on t-shirts". It worked and over Saturday and Sunday, he sold at least a half-dozen shirts, most of them "Fantasy Lives Matter" shirts. So while there are some people who are offended by them, there are apparently also a large number of people excited by them (I think exclusively white people that I saw, although most of the attendees looked pretty white to me as well). ::sigh::

Over the course of the event, 27 new people signed up for our Woohooligan Weekly Dick Joke Advocate mailing list. I know many of those people were either indifferent to the FLM shirts or some may have even been excited by them... but I have no idea how many people may have simply avoided conversation with me all-together because of them.

I still have no plans to share another table with X. It's weird to me, because he's really sensitive about other things, like he kept profusely apologizing for falling asleep in the car because he apparently suffers from pretty bad road hypnosis. He's made the hour drive before, but I was concerned about him making the drive after a full day manning the table at the con. Meanwhile I also discovered he's got a huge chip on his shoulder about (of all things) shaking hands.

X: I hate it. I don't like people touching me.

So to recap: shaking hands is tragic evidence of the decline of civilization, while Black Lives Matter is deluded and don't know how to address problems, and "many of them deserve what they're getting anyway".

I just can't fathom how a person can have that set of priorities when they go out of their way to eat shawarma and so forth and don't appear to be outwardly racist in any other way that I can tell.

His FLM shirts outsold mine by a wide margin, and frankly I don't care... or rather, I find it disheartening... and I'm not about to deliberately associate my work with it in the future. All people need justice, and if you think it through, you should realize that "all lives matter" is the actual meaning of "black lives matter". Saying "all lives matter" as a response is like saying of the condition of slaves, "slave owners have problems, too!" It takes air away from the importance of addressing a great deal of injustice in our country and I don't want to contribute to trivializing that in any way. Even if I stood to gain financially from it, I wouldn't do it.

I'm still not sure what else to do, beyond just not sharing con tables with him again, and would still appreciate hearing any thoughts you have on it. Thanks.

From Sirius Black Friday to #GivingTuesday!

Between Sirius Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday — this week has been busy for the HPA! On Giving Tuesday, we encouraged folks to launch personal fundraisers on Facebook to benefit the HPA, and we’ve been blown away by your enthusiasm and support! We originally set out to raise $2,000 total through Facebook fundraisers by December 12, and just in the first day we reached $2,140! That’s some magic. If you missed out on Giving Tuesday, don’t fret! We’re still hoping to raise more funds before the end of the year to support our work and the timeline for individual fundraisers still lasts until Dec 12, so keep up the great work!

Time for another spotlight on one of the HPA’s incredible teams! This week, let’s learn more about our Fandom Foward Team!

Our Fandom Forward team produces these amazing toolkits on various fandoms, giving Chapters and other folks resources with which they can discuss activism as it connects to pop culture! Recently, they released the Jessica Jones: Tackling Domestic Violence and Lead like Wonder Womanmini-toolkits! Big shout outs to Christine Roberts for writing the Jessica Jones toolkit and Krupa Hebbar for the beautiful Wonder Woman design.

Stay tuned for new toolkits about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a full Jessica Jones Toolkit which will be focusing on gender roles, relationship abuse, and PTSD.

Chapters: They get the gob done.

Thanks to the work of our HPA Chapters, we’ve got plenty of wizard activists spreading their magic out in the field. Here are a few highlights from October:

The Princess Anne Auguries — Virginia Beach, Virginia — The chapter has been working with fellow clubs at their school on community service projects, including working with UNICEF to assist kids in third world countries, attending rallies in support of DACA, and raising mental health awareness. They are also working to combat LGBTQ discrimination in schools this fall.

The Burrow — Manhattan, Kansas — The chapter had a table at the Little Apple Comic Expo on campus and K-State’s farmer’s market where they sold handmade crafts and all of the money they made went to Direct Relief, which supports relief efforts to those hurt by natural disasters around the globe.

Lumos Flashes — Kent, Ohio — Their university had people writing hateful messages in chalk around campus, so the chapter countered it with messages of love. Photos here!

It’s time to get your squad ready to roll up to this year’s Yule Ball looking fly as h*ck. Venues in New York City, Washington DC, and Boston will all be hosting Harry & the Potters’ Yule Ball 2017 the weekend of December 15–17th. In addition to seeing awesome guests like The Moaning Myrtles (Reunion!) w/ Lauren Fairweather, Potter Puppet Pals, Draco and the Malfoys, Jason Anderson, and Kwikspell, these fun and festive celebrations will also be raising money for the HPA. For all three events, a portion of ticket sales will be donated to the HPA! Fun timez and good deeds all in one? H*ck yeah.

Ramadan and Quarantine Taught Me that to Serve Allah (S), I Must Make Time for Me

Editor's note: All this month, Haute Hijab team members are bringing you our Ramadan Diaries, posts about how our month is going, things we've learned and struggles we may be having. We are figuring out fasting and worship at home, strengthening our connection with Allah (S) and how to build community while in quarantine, just like all of you! This last entry comes from Noor Suleiuman, our Marketing Manager.

I wrote this post in my head like three different times. It was always profound. And now when it’s time to put pen to paper, this is all I have:

If I don’t prioritize myself, no one else will.

That’s it. That’s my Ramadan reflection. I actually asked Dilshad, our editor, if that sentence alone would suffice for this blog post.

I’ve tried to do all the things this Ramadan. And in some sense, Alhamdulillah, I’ve been able to accomplish a lot for my kids, my home and my work. But some days, it doesn’t feel like that. This quarantine has stripped moms of their villages and left us having to figure out how to balance all the things – and it’s just not humanly possible. I know that.

But it doesn’t stop the endless tabs from staying open in my brain:

Am I doing enough to teach my son? I know a healthy dose of boredom is good for him and his development, but am I doing enough? Ugh, no, I need to get more organized and set a syllabus for homeschooling now that school’s out for the rest of the year (thanks to COVID). Maybe I can work on that on the weekend. I should also food prep on the weekend so that I can free up more time to spend with them on the weekdays. But then that means the weekends aren’t for rest anymore, and I have to work seven days a week ...

My son’s allergies are getting bad – is he taking the right medicine? I hope his cough doesn’t turn into something more. Is my 18-month-old on track for all her milestones? Should I be doing more activities with her? WHEN can I even do that?! Oh man, I still didn’t order the kids summer clothes, and shipping takes forever. I need to get on that. Yay, more decisions to make. They need shoes too, and jackets. Kids grow like weeds!

How do I make sure I raise my son and daughter to love each other and not resent each other? I need to read up on that and make sure I don’t inadvertently do something to cause that. Oh man, I never printed out her baby pictures!!! I really need to organize those. Yeah, maybe later in the summer. Shoot, I need to order my friend’s gift. Groceries. Thankfully, we’re on top of that. What should I make for dinner tonight? More decisions!

I miss my son’s school, but I also now am wondering if the school system is designed to fail our students. Should I just commit to homeschooling him? I need to research some outdoor activities for them now that summer’s here. I need to be better at planning in advance so I can make all these things happen. I also need a better morning and night routine. Maybe that’ll help me be on top of everything.

Then, a moment of quiet! I open Instagram for a few minutes just to get some rest and passive entertainment/inspiration. HOW do these moms do it all?? I know they don’t. They know they don’t. They don’t even claim they do! I’m so thankful for mom bloggers, especially during this season of quarantine, because I’ve gotten so much inspiration from them. But some days, it makes me feel incredibly inadequate. Do I just delete my app, even if it’s been helpful to me?

GET. IT. TOGETHER. NOOR. I say this to myself week after week.

This is just a tiny little snippet of what goes through my head. I know I’m not the only one. Most moms who read this will vigorously nod their heads and relate to this stream of consciousness that seems to be a permanent fixture in our brains. I know this, because every time I speak to a mom, they either vent about this very thing or agree with me if I say it.

If I sound stressed out, it’s because I am. I feel like life is happening to me, and I’m just going with it, going with the daily motions, doing what I need to do. I’m filling everyone’s cups but my own. I feel out of control (not that we’re ever entirely in control, but you get me). And, I truly don’t mean this in a depressing way. I’m not alone – quarantine aside – Alhamdulillah. I’m surrounded by amazing family and friends who truly love and support me!

But they don’t know what I’m feeling, or what I’m attempting to juggle. I need to ask for more help. I need to turn off my brain, close some tabs, and write my thoughts down so they stop fogging up my brain and stressing me out. It’s crippling, it causes so much decision fatigue as well as emotional, physical and mental stress.

In many ways, this quarantine has been great, especially during Ramadan. It gave us the opportunity to slow down and focus on what’s important – like Melanie wrote, it provided for us the Ramadan we all needed. But with all the “extra” time, came a want to make the most of it. In doing so – in trying to do all the things – I forgot myself.

And that’s when it hit me: I realized I had nothing left to give my Lord, and that was a big fat reality check for me. If I can’t serve Allah (S) right during Ramadan, what do I have?

ALL of the things I metaphorically carry meant that by the time the last ten days of Ramadan came, I couldn’t even fathom being able to get vulnerable with Allah (S), make du’a and cry to Him, to stand my nights in prayer. The thought of doing that was exhausting. I reached a breaking point and came to a very important realization. Well, many important realizations:

1. Self care is vital to my ibadah (ability to worship), and my ability to foster a relationship with Allah (S). I cannot possibly serve my Lord appropriately if I’m this burnt out.

2. If I don’t take care of myself, if I don’t prioritize myself, no one will.

3. Self care is a personal responsibility, not just an afterthought. And how that self care manifests is different for different people depending on what you need to let go of and what helps you ease your mind. It’s not something I should just “fit in” when I can. I need to be unapologetic about it. It is as much a necessity as anything else.

Now does that mean I miraculously have newfound time on my hands to take bubble baths? That would be a big fat NO. But, it does mean that for my mental health and sanity, I will make time to check out of everything and check in with myself. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to do this during his stays in ghar hiraa (the cave of hiraa). If I don’t regularly check in with myself and refuel my tank, I can’t be the person I want to be.

Quarantine is still under effect, Ramadan is coming to an end, life is still not back to normal, and I’m still left balancing all the things. So long as our society doesn’t fully support mothers and families, the stress will always be there – so please don’t mistake this post as simplifying the load of motherhood/parenthood.

But with a little more grace and a little more me time, I can take care of myself, Insha’Allah. I’m still figuring out how and what I can do, but I’m looking forward to figuring it out, unapologetically, Insha’Allah.

Five Books for Eid

It's the Eid pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

Eid is this weekend, so I decided to suggest five books by and/or about women in the ‘Muslim world’. I tried to choose books with women as the main focus (one is a YA book about a little girl), that didn’t victimise women or demonise men in Muslim cultures. Although several revolve around war and revolutions, I tried to choose books that covered women with different experiences and opinions. Many of these books are more or less ‘real world’ accounts and although many of them are difficult to read and not all of them are ‘literary’, I would recommend them to everyone, if for nothing but the ideal that through reading we can build empathy and understanding of different peoples and experiences, and these are voices rarely heard in mainstream Western literature.

"Against the tyranny of time and politics, imagine us the way we sometimes didn’t dare to imagine ourselves: in our most private and secret moments, in the most extraordinarily ordinary instances of life, listening to music, falling in love, walking down the shady streets or reading Lolita in Tehran. And then imagine us again with all this confiscated, driven underground, taken away from us." - Lolita in Tehran

I’ll start with the easiest to read:

1. Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa al-Sanea

A casual, light book about women from the KSA. It takes the form of gossipy anonymous e-mails about the lives of a group of four college-age women who were high school friends in Riyadh - mostly their adventures in the world of love and relationships in a country where they have limited contact with men.

If I were to file this under a genre it would be chick lit. It’s fun and easy to read. The women are clearly privileged: they’re wealthy, they travel, they get nose jobs, they wear Elie Saab. The writer wrote this in Arabic for an Arab audience and didn’t expect it to be translated and disseminated in the English speaking world. The characters aren’t meant to represent all Saudi women, and though this was controversial and was immediately banned when it came out in the KSA, this isn’t meant to be a political polemic. It’s a rare pop culture peek into the lives of ‘regular’ women in a country that seldom reveals itself in this way.

2. Our Women on the Ground, edited by Zahra Hankir

This is a compilation of essays by Arab women journalists reporting from the Arab world. The journalists include not just those working for familiar media agencies like the BBC, New York Times and Al Jazeera, but also freelancers and citizen journalists.

These essays are personal and many deal with the realities of living and working in war zones. It's not the easiest book to read, but I think it's an important book. If you had to choose only one book in this list, I suggest this one. Every essay is eloquent. The book presents not just the perspectives of Arab woman journalists about the conflicts they cover, they also share their lives and work conditions honestly and openly. In societies which are gender segregated, Arab women journalists can access places that would otherwise be closed off to Western, and male, journalists, and in this book we hear from people who we would otherwise find difficult to reach.

3. Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga

This lyrical free verse YA book is about a Syrian girl named Jude. Syria is on the cusp of revolution. After her house is raided, she and her mother go to Cincinnati to live with relatives. There she adjusts to living in a new country, speaking a language she isn't completely comfortable with yet, and becoming American. She faces some Islamphobia, but also meets lovely and welcoming people in her school and community, and by the end she has made friends and is beginning to feel more settled into her new home.

I found the writing to be particularly beautiful. The targeted age group is middle grade. I think some issues would have to be explained or researched by children as they'd be too young to have been politically aware and following the news coverage of the Arab Spring as it occurred, and some background guidance on revolutions and the political situation in the Middle East would be helpful for them to contextualize the story. However the latter half about Jude's new life in America is I think helpful for helping young readers (and adults!) empathise with the day to day struggles of refugee or immigrant children. There are also many children who will identify with Jude's story of immigration and/or escaping conflict, and who don't often see their story represented in children's literature.

More generally, this is a book about home and belonging. The loss of home, the desire for home, and the struggle to build a new home. Although the ending is uplifting, I think it's ultimately a sad book, because the Syria Jude had to leave behind can never be reclaimed, and this loss will always exist for her.

4. Reading Lolita in Tehran

I realise this book is a little controversial. It's been accused of being New Orientalist and neoconservative by Hamid Dabashi (he writes the forward for Dreaming of Baghdad, my last book recommendation below).

This book is the memoir of an English literature professor teaching in Tehran during the revolution. When she's fired from her job for refusing to wear the hijab, she starts a book club/reading group for some of her female students in her living room.

I enjoyed this book, it's very readable. Much of the book are her discussions with her students about literature and their lives, and she directly correlates the books they read to their political experiences in Iran (c.f. the title: Reading Lolita in Tehran). I recommend reading it at least for her funny story of putting The Great Gatsby on trial in her classroom, and other amusing anecdotes, like her student life protests and when her drug dealer neighbour hid in their garden.

This isn't a book that's meant to encompass the experiences of all Iranian women, or a literary critique on Lolita, or a broad political analysis on Iran-US relations. It's a memoir of a woman, who's upper class, educated in the US, and decidedly secular. She seems to like Marx, dislike the hijab, and that is entirely fair and her right to do so and write about in her memoir.

I personally feel that some of the criticisms of her book are a little unfair, and people are reading too much into the book, and expecting too much out of it, but I say this with the caveat that I read this years after its publication, so I read this removed from any expectations the initial marketing/advertising would have inspired. I'll probably write a separate post on how I feel about this book. However I would be remiss if I didn't also I also suggest you read a balancing piece, Jasmine and Stars (Reading more than Lolita in Tehran) by Fatemah Keshavarz.

I recommend Reading Lolita in Tehran to you with the assumption that you are a politically aware, rational adult who doesn't assume that one writer's opinions and experiences are representative of an entire country, and doesn't look to a single book to give you an overview of 'the condition of women's lives in Iran'. Look at it as a literature professor's anecdotes about her life in books, and proceed from there.

5. Dreaming of Baghdad by Haifa Zangana

I left this till the end because this is the hardest book in the list.

Haifa Zangana was an Iraqi Communist Party activist who was imprisoned during Saddam Hussein's regime. She was initially tortured and imprisoned in a political prison, then transferred to Abu Ghraib, then to a prostitute's prison. This is essentially her recollections.

It's not a torture narrative, instead it takes on a dreamlike quality, and switches from the first to third person, letters to herself, disjointed dreams and nightmares, scenes from her childhood, her present, and her time as an activist and in prison.

This is a book I really want you to read. It will haunt you forever. Reading about imprisonment, torture and executions is always difficult, but I felt reading this was like bearing witness to her testimony.
