hi! so most (if not all) of my favorite outsider pov fic recs in one piece are gen. eitherways, buckle up, it's going to be a long list. all of these are oneshots.

but the eternal pose points East (Lech L'cha) by grainjew and fallingwish

aaa this is amazing! it's a wonderful display of straw hat loyalty! written through the point of view of the sun pirates, though majorly aladine, as jinbe collects the crew.

i just realized that i'm not going to be able to fully explain how wonderful most of these fanfics are.

2. The Way They Used To Be by deebainwonderland

written through the point of view of a young boy about the straw hat pirates in a world where luffy died at marineford. it's a haunting representation of how luffy's death might affect the strawhats, and how they change with his demise.

3. belong among the wildflowers by WhirlyBird70

an old gardener rediscovers a dream all for the sake of some flowers. OR luffy finds pretty flowers, wants to give them to robin, and stages a coup. it's a wonderful study of the straw hats through the eyes of an outsider, and their interactions are wonderfully written.

4. waiting for the storm by SoccerSarah01

in which a reluctant government employee observes the strawhats' exploits. it indirectly shows the great charisma that luffy and his crew have, and how they manage to get supporters everywhere they go. it's also kinda a regular civilian's view on events, stretching from alabasta to timeskip

5. In Which Higuma Doesn't Get To Get Drunk, Even Though He Really, Really Wants To by grainjew

in which post-wano luffy time travels to the past in the moment that higuma enters the bar, and the events that unfold after that, told from the point of view of said bandit. this is hilarious, and grainjew's characterization is always top notch.

6. Benn's Confusing, Bewildering, No-Good, Very Odd Early Morning by grainjew and Origamidragons

another time travel fic, this time told through the perspective of benn beckman. a post wano luffy falls into foosha village, drops information, fights with shanks and then leaves. the best part of this fic is the underlying disbelief in almost every line of dialogue exchanged, mainly because it's funny.

7. when you think your day can't get weirder and then your boss gets turned into a yoyo right in front of you by SoccerSarah01

a random bandit's reaction to gear 5 luffy and post wano strawhats. i don't really have much that i can verbalize about this, but it's extremely amusing.

8. To sail until the end of the sea (with you) by alliumnoblade

in which the marines capture zoro, robin and usopp, and one observes them, and how they are different from the stories they've heard. featuring, mild straw hat shenanigans that border on the impossible.

9. How I Wanted to Follow You by longing paradise

zoro and luffy's relationship is one of my most favorites in the entirety of one piece, and this post-canon one shot displays that perfectly. told through the perspective of some upcoming pirates a few years after luffy's death as they visit shells town to ask about the location of one piece from zoro (though, let's be honest, he's the worst person to ask for directions)

10. Tag Tail Training by stormy1x2

the straw hat pirates get stuck with a captive! but, life never stops on the sunny, so chaos. or, a marine observes the unique way the strawhats train and wonders if it's mutiny.

11. Bon Voyage by taizi

luffy gets hurt during a fight, and the straw hat pirates will always put him over everything. one piece fics about loyalty make me shriek with joy and this is no different.

12. both haunted and holy by merikai

the straw hats through the eyes of vivi and yamato. a study on how they are family, and they do care about each other a lot. also featuring a yamato who decides to be yamato instead of kozuki oden and then joins the strawhats.

13. SEALED. by wizardslexicon

a report from CP0 agent, guernica, about the exploits of the straw hat pirates. he's horribly wrong, because the straw hats are the farthest things possible from masterminds, but it is framed in a way that seems logical.

14. Kaidou's Post-Imperial Adventure (The Kaidou & Linlin Magma Tea Party, The Newspaper Reader’s Woes, How To Crash A Strawhat Beach Party, & Other Happenings) by grainjew and Origamidragons

kaido goes through a cover story and experiences the luffy effect and gets roped into becoming a somewhat subordinate of the strawhats.

15. the night we met (a time travel au) by one_step_closer_to_death

a series in which luffy is a very unsubtle time traveler, as told through the eyes of people he interacts with. one note for this, luffy is born a couple of years before roger's execution, so..yeah

16. World's Worst Funeral by sympt0matic

not really sure if this could be said to be outsider pov, but it is tagged such and it's too funny to exclude

17. A Ghost Story (of your own making) by Acewithapaintbrush

the inherent horror of gear 5 and the straw hat pirates for the marines

Matsuda Heita (松田 平太) aka Dōtō no higuma otoko (道東 の ヒグマ 男 “The Bear Man of East Hokkaido”) and Heita Shishō (平太 師匠 “Master Heita”): Status: Deceased (Suicide) - Crime: He was discovered while murdering and eating a man while wearing a bear pelt… but actually he had killed way more than just one man.

22. Michael Ostrog (マイケル・オストログ) aka Jack the Ripper (ジャック ザ リッパー): Status: Deceased (Killed by Sugimoto Saichi) - Crime: around 10 years ago he stabbed multiple times a prostitute in Yokohama. He’s also responsible for murdering prostitutes in London.

23. Ueji Keiji (上エ地 圭二): Status: Deceased (He slipped from a high chimney) –Crime: he’s a murderer who abducted tons of kids and buried them in his garden.

NOT A CONVICT: It turned out that the 24 tattooed convict is actually not a convict but Kadokura Toshiyuki (門倉 利運) former Abashiri head jailer, currently Hijikata Toshizō’s loyal ally, whose tattoo is however incomplete. The image above doesn’t include him because this was meant to be a list of convicts and Kadokura isn’t.

That’s because:

- Tsurumi handed Hijikata some real skins among the fake ones, but we don’t know which they are.

- the tattooed skins entrusted to Kadokura has partly ended in Tsurumi’s hands and partly in Sugimoto’s hands.

Long story short, we don’t know anymore which skins has Tsurumi, which skins has Sugimoto and which skins has Hijikata.

Loving this drama so far. It is so sweet and laid back. Watching the lead couple in the two different timelines makes me so nostalgic. As a bonus, the OSTs are top-notch!

+ Snowdrop (2021)(18 Dec-) ~ Airing. ★★★☆☆

It has been interesting to watch Snowdrop amidst all the controversy. I will be interested to see how JTBC reacts and the decisions they will make going forward.

Setting aside the controversy, Snowdrop is interesting enough to continue with for now. The production value offers quite a nice shine. I do wonder what direction the story will follow.

Pains me to say that watching this drama has become such a chore. I have found that it has gotten extremely boring. My expectations were clearly too high. Between killing off all of its intriguing baddies, the introduction of the perplexing court lady secret society, and resolving any key problems in the most random, unsatisfactory ways, I don't have much hope for this final week ...

I am loving this drama so very much. It has been such a sweet and heartbreaking watch. I have shared in the laughs and the tears. I am continually impressed with the acting. I am quite enjoying taking my time with this drama and savoring it. So far, this is quite a gem!

During the camp and on off days, what do you do for a change of pace?

I guess the main one would be taking pictures. Especially on an overseas trip like this, taking a lot of pictures of sights I don’t usually see arouses my creativity.

Since coming to Australia, what kind of pictures have you taken?

When you go a bit outwards, there’s a desert, so I’ve taken a lot of pictures of cacti. But though you may say “cacti” in one word, there are tall ones, types that have a form that is round like a tennis ball, and so on - there are many different kinds. What I’m thinking I most want to photograph next is the starry sky. Since it’s the Southern hemisphere, the scenery of the night sky totally differs from the sky in Japan. The Southern Cross, or capturing the Milky Way - I’d really like to take such pictures.

I often send them to family and friends. I sent a lot of pictures of the koalas to my brother Yuuta, fufufu. It seems my sister likes cacti of weird shapes.

I think the fans also really want to see Fuji-san’s pictures.

I brought many with me today, so sure. I’d be happy if people would like them.

Yay. After about a month of losing the original package, the replacement order has finally arrived.

As usual the Fate/strange fake manga is really high quality. It feels so nice to look at... I’ve already saw the scans online, but it feels better to be able to see and hold it physically. The first appearances of Sigma, Prelati, Watcher are also very exciting! (Can’t wait to thoroughly flip through it)

The only other manga I bought were the first volumes of the Last Saiyuki and Hell Warden Higuma. Both series weren’t that great, but they had a lot of potential. I know Jump needs to make money, but I’m irritated how they don’t allow series more time to develop. I want to buy the rest of the volumes, but I wonder if I can with the corona virus going on...

Also bought a few CDs: the soundtrack for Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels +  KamiBoku’s 20XX. Excited to listen to them.

Shueisha launches free global MANGA Plus service in English Worldwid (except in Japan, China and Korea, who already have their own services). A Spanish version of the service is planned for launch between February and March.

The service has a total of 50 titles, including 13 completed series, and more titles will be added gradually. The service publishes new chapters of currently serialized manga from Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Jump Square magazine, and the Shonen Jump+ service at the same time they are released in Japan. While MANGA Plus is free to download and use, users can also purchase compiled book volumes for specific manga. The first chapter and the latest chapter of currently serialized manga are also free. A portion of the revenue from advertisements on the website will go directly to the manga authors.

As the artist behind Dragon Ball Super, do you get a lot of feedback from overseas fans? How would you characterize that feedback?

When I have been to overseas events, people have spoken to me. The way people overseas perceive and evaluate my work is very different from Japan, so it's been very helpful to me as reference for creating the story.

How important would you say the international audience is for the success of Dragon Ball Super?

Because Dragon Ball is loved throughout the entire world, I think that the sequel Dragon Ball Super must also be loved in the same way.

Are you personally excited that your overseas fans can now catch up and read your new chapters at the same time as Japan?

I am very grateful that there is no time lag for the release of the manga. If the information from Japan is conveyed in a fragmentary manner, then readers won't be able to taste the initial emotions and surprise. I am very excited about the simultaneous release.

Yen bears may emerge from hibernation in April

Like Hokkaido’s Higuma Bears, yen bears may be poised to come out of hibernation. But the latter won’t be driven by the advent of spring in Japan but by the beginning of the new Japanese financial year on April 1, which could be accompanied by new capital outflows out of the yen.

By that same token, investors should be wary of over-interpreting price action in the last days of March which, to a large extent, may merely reflect Japanese financial year-end balance sheet window dressing. Just because the yen comes home doesn’t mean it will stay there once the new financial year begins.

Additionally, Japan’s investors will have fresh money to put to work in the new financial year and that too may mean yen-negative offshore investment.

In the fixed income sphere, Japanese investors may rationally conclude their best options for earning material yields lie offshore, with the Bank of Japan (BOJ) seemingly determined to stick to its current monetary policy settings regardless of anything happening elsewhere.

“There is no reason to reduce the level of monetary accommodation in light of current economic and price developments,” BOJ governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Friday. “I don’t think we need to raise our interest-rate targets now. It’s unclear whether inflation will hit our 2 per cent target before my term ends” in April 2018.

“The [BOJ] will not raise the target level of the long-term interest rates just because of a rise in such rates in other countries,” he added.

Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities (MUMSS), writing on Friday, felt that while the path of the dollar/yen exchange rate is hard to predict, it may “remain in a narrow range over the near term” but that the yen is unlikely “to appreciate much further.”

As for the yen’s recent rise, or more specifically the dollar’s recent pullback, MUMSS focuses not on any factors related to the imminent end of the Japanese financial year but instead ascribes the moves to the unwinding of short US Treasury positions in the wake of the Fed’s March 15 rate increase.

MUMSS notes that “in the Chicago futures market, speculative (non-commercial) positions on 10-yr US Treasuries were net short by a margin of 409,000 contracts (as of March 3)” but that this “fell to a net short of 194,000 contracts on March 17, as some investors likely changed their view after confirming that the Fed will not pick up its pace of monetary tightening, despite deciding to raise rates in the March FOMC meeting.”

Nevertheless, MUMSS believes that “the Fed is likely to maintain its gradual tightening policy, in light of prices and employment conditions in the US, meaning that long-term rates are unlikely to see another phase of persistent decline” and that “this in turn would limit downside for the dollar.”

Of course that doesn’t mean the dollar will rise versus the yen but a catalyst for such a move could be if financial conditions in the United States become somewhat tighter even while the Fed stays on its current measured and avowedly data-dependent course.

A fall in deposits in the US Treasury’s account with the Federal Reserve may point to such a tightening of financial conditions.

The first business day of the US fiscal year in 2016 fell on October 3, and on that date the US Treasury had a closing balance of US$ 339.8 billion in its account at the Federal Reserve. At close of business on February 13, 2017, the day President Trump’s nominee Steven Mnuchin was confirmed as Treasury Secretary, the balance had fallen to US$ 319.6 billion.

By last Thursday, the balance had dropped to just US$ 68.8 billion. It’s hard not to conclude that the US Treasury has been using withdrawals from the account as an alternative to other ways of raising money, such as borrowing.

That drawdown must have fed into the US economy either through direct government spending or through the freeing up of capital for investment elsewhere that would have ordinarily flowed into government borrowing. All this would have lent itself to looser financial conditions.

But with the account now largely drawn upon, financial conditions in the United States may tighten again as the government will still need to raise money to meet its obligations.

The attraction to Japan’s investors of shifting out of yen into dollars to place in US paper might be renewed. The beginning of Japan’s financial year in April may see the yen bears emerge from hibernation.
