I'm sure all of that would hold up to scientific scrutiny.
I mean, sure, you are just transferring 1s and 0s back and forth, and as long as all of the 1s and 0s get where they need to go, your picture will look exactly the same with a $10 cable as it does with a $2300 cable... but I really do need that Level 7 dissipation. My house is constantly flooded with satellite radiation.
Yes, there are shitty HDMI cables. And some of them struggle to meet the bandwidth they claim on the packaging. This will cause no picture or sound or it will cause dropouts or skipped frames. Sometimes you will get crazy artifacts that pop in and out. But you cannot improve video or audio quality with a fancy cable.
You will not see magical colors so bright you cum in your shorts.
You will not hear indescribably intense bass that will violently vibrate your testicles--killing your sperm. That was microplastics, okay?
You will get the data that was encoded into the media file.
You just need a cable that can pass along that data without incident. Buying a "good" cable is actually recommended. Blue Jeans Cable is a great brand that has high quality control standards and a good warranty. They are a little spendy, but everything is a good value.

So you know they prioritize their budget toward R&D and product design over graphic designer or a subscription to Squarespace.
I buy their cables because they always meet the data bandwidth they claim and they can take abuse due to using tougher materials that last.
My best advice when buying an HDMI or other data cable is to figure out how much bandwidth you need, and then make sure in the product description they mention the data rate.
So if you want 4K resolution at 60 Hz, you will need a cable that does at least 18 gigabits per second. If you need 4K/120Hz/4:4:4/12 bit, then the bandwidth should be 48 Gbps. And if you get more bandwidth than you actually need, the cable is backwards compatible.

USUALLY, if they list the actual data rate (Gbps) in the product description, you can trust they certified it can pass that much data through. It's when you don't see any Gbps rating in the product description that you should move on to another cable.
(USB standards are insanely confusing, but the same advice applies. Try to find out the data rate you need and research to make sure the cable is capable of that.)
I'm afraid all of this cable nonsense goes back a long way. When I turned 16 I immediately applied for a job at Best Buy selling computers. And I really loved that job. So many people were clueless about computers back then and I was very good at assessing their needs and making sure they went home with the equipment and accessories that would suit them within their budget.
And if they tried to buy the eMachines computers, I would tell them they might as well set their money on fire.
Throw directly into trash because this is some hot garbage.
Unfortunately my managers pressured me to sell warranties and accessories that I didn't really believe in. The hardest thing they asked me to do was sell people gold-plated printer cables. This is back when printers still used a parallel port connection.
They wanted me to sell these for $40 to $60 (depending on length).
Even though these bad boys did the exact same thing for only $20.
I could actually see on the store's computer how much markup these cables had. The cheap ones cost Best Buy the exact same amount as the gold ones.
Maybe they weren't as aesthetically pleasing, but those cheaper cables were built like fuckin' tanks. I probably still have some of these in my basement that would function just as well as they did 25 years ago.
The ONLY difference was the "gold" contacts on the ends. But my managers told me to lie to customers. I was to tell them you would get much faster print speeds, better colors, and more DPI (dots per inch). But both cables sent the same 1s and 0s. They either worked or they didn't. The only tiny advantage is that gold contacts are slightly less resistant to corrosion over time. But I have yet to see that happen within the lifespan of any cable.
So I would tell customers it was a waste of money and lie to my managers saying the customers weren't interested.
"Did you tell them it was faster?" "Yes." (A lie.) "Did you tell them it made the colors better?" "Yes." (Also a lie.) "Well, we're going to have to work on your sales presentation skills." "Sounds good, boss." (Whatever, dude.)

~ My new DX OC Antagonist (it/it). In Greek mythology - the god of chaos, primeval darkness. The same A/I as Icarus, Daedalus, Helios, Morpheus, but unlike their "brothers" Erebus has a body and is hostile towards the main characters... So it can be considered a full-fledged synthetic (android). It's shell is the color of ripe cherries, made of super-strong and flexible plastic, with an ultra-low density exceeding high-quality steel by two times. On it's face is a helmet with a built-in internal screen that works as a protection/navigator/infrared vision/transmitter and a data receiver, and it also serves to transmit more accurate holographic data and images. Also on the head of It there are five flexible harnesses (cables) that also serve as melee weapons and ports for connecting to computers. Erebus was created as a plan "B" in case Bob Page was defeated. While its creator was the main player, the android was in hibernation mode, undergoing algorithm testing and system stabilization. The distress signal was received and accepted by the Erebus system a couple of minutes before the destruction of the main base. Thus sending an impulse to the main OS, bringing it out of hibernation mode. * That's all for now. As usual, the full body will be later when I think about this moment properly. But unlike Grayson, whose story was thought out a long time ago, I'll have to sit on this guy's motives. For now, I'm not sure if it's going to be an episodic villain or the main headache of the good guys. Time will show.

NASA completes spacecraft to transport, support Roman Space Telescope
The spacecraft bus that will deliver NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to its orbit and enable it to function once there is now complete after years of construction, installation, and testing.
Now that the spacecraft is assembled, engineers will begin working to integrate the observatory’s other major components, including the science instruments and the telescope itself.
“They call it a spacecraft bus for a reason — it gets the telescope to where it needs to be in space,” said Jackie Townsend, the Roman deputy project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “But it’s really more like an RV because it has a whole assortment of functions that enable Roman to accomplish its scientific goals while out there too.”
Those goals include surveying wide swaths of the universe to study things like: dark energy, a mysterious cosmic pressure thought to accelerate the universe’s expansion; dark matter, invisible matter seen only via its gravitational influence; and exoplanets, worlds beyond our solar system.
The mission’s science wouldn’t be possible without a spacecraft to transport the telescope, point the observatory toward different cosmic targets, provide power, communicate with Earth, control and store instrument data, and regulate Roman’s temperature. Nearly 50 miles of electrical cabling are laced throughout the assembly to enable different parts of the observatory to communicate with each other.
The spacecraft will also deploy several major elements that will be stowed for launch, including the solar panels, deployable aperture cover, lower instrument Sun shade, and high-gain antenna. It’s also responsible for collecting and beaming down data, which is no small task for a space observatory that will survey the cosmos like Roman will.
“Roman will send back 1.4 terabytes of data per day, compared to about 50 to 60 gigabytes from the James Webb Space Telescope and three gigabytes from the Hubble Space Telescope,” said Jason Hylan, the Roman observatory manager at NASA Goddard. “Webb’s daily downlink is roughly comparable to 13 hours of YouTube video at the highest quality while Roman’s would amount to about 2 weeks.”
A Goddard Grand Slam
This milestone is the culmination of eight years of spacecraft design work, building, and testing by hundreds of people at Goddard.
“Goddard employees were the brains, designers, and executors. And they worked with vendors who supplied all the right parts,” Townsend said. “We leaned on generations of expertise in the spacecraft arena to work around cost and schedule challenges that arose from supply chain issues and the pandemic.”
One time- and money-saving technique the team came up with was building a spacecraft mockup, called the structural verification unit. That allowed them to do two things at once: complete strength testing on the mockup, designed specifically for that purpose, while also assembling the actual spacecraft.
The spacecraft’s clever layout also allowed the team to adapt to changing schedules. It’s designed to be modular, “more like Trivial Pursuit pie pieces than a nesting egg, where interior components are buried inside,” Townsend said. “That’s been a game-changer because you can’t always count on things arriving in the order you planned or working perfectly right away with no tweaks.” It also increased efficiency because people could work on different portions of the bus at the same time without interfering with each other.
The slightly asymmetrical and hexagonal spacecraft bus is about 13 feet (4 meters) wide by 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall and weighs in at 8,400 pounds (3,800 kilograms).
One reason it doesn’t weigh more is that some components have been partially hollowed out. If you could peel back some of the spacecraft’s panels, you’d find superthin metallic honeycomb sandwiched between two slim layers of metal. And many of the components, such as the antenna dish, are made of strong yet lightweight composite materials.
When the spacecraft bus was fully assembled, engineers conducted a comprehensive performance test. Prior to this, each component had been tested individually, but just like with a sports team, the whole unit has to perform well together.
“The spacecraft passed the test, and now we’re getting ready to install the payload –– Roman’s instruments and the telescope itself,” said Missie Vess, a spacecraft systems engineer for Roman at NASA Goddard. “Next year, we’ll test these systems together and begin integrating the final components of the observatory, including the deployable aperture cover, outer barrel assembly, and solar panels. Then we’ll finally have ourselves a complete observatory, on track for launch by May 2027.”

02: Discussing my Dream Job
When considering my ideal role as an environmental interpreter, the first aspect that comes to mind is my preference for doing ‘behind the scenes’ work. As interpreters, one objective is to describe our knowledge to the audience while making it fun and exciting. As someone who is not very good at public speaking, I would ideally let someone else take the lead, especially when the communication is verbal. That said, much more goes into environmental interpretation than just the final delivery.
There are a few roles I would take within environmental interpretation, one of them being conducting field work. I would love to be able to go out into a space of nature and understand the different parts that make up the ecosystem. I would seek information that answers the following questions: What are the prominent tree species? What allows them to grow their best? What organisms are vital to the growth of the specific ecosystem? How might the climate crisis effect this space? Through collecting this information, I would be able to put together a cohesive interpretation of the biological aspects of the ecosystem. Furthermore, I would want to select for the higher quality and more powerful information I gathered to share with the audience, or as described in our textbook, I would try and use ‘The Gift of Precision’ (Beck et al., 2018).
Conducting field work that is accurate and that is of high quality requires a well-rounded set of skills. While there are endless skills that would be beneficial to this role, the ones that stick out to me the most are attention to detail and critical thinking. One would need to have a good eye for the intricate details that come together to form what we call nature. This could include correctly identifying species that look similar, such as the Austrian pine and the red pine. Attention to detail may also include accurately observing animal behaviours, such as not confusing two squirrels for fighting when they are just playing. With the information gathered from having good attention to detail, the next step is to analyze the data and draw conclusions. Using critical thinking skills, one would need to synthesize all the knowledge into a cohesive piece that could subsequently be shared with others. What other skills do you think would be essential to this role?

Ideally, I would begin my endeavours as an environmental interpreter in a space I am familiar with, such as Etobicoke. Once I have mastered the foundational skills, I would be interested in expanding my knowledge to other places around the world. It would be incredible not only to see but also to research areas like Iceland, Australia, Indonesia, and more.

Mors ad machina Part 1
So lately I've seen a lot of like robot fucker content (not complaining I am now an avid robot fucker) and a fair few like snuff robot things too and I got inspired and wrote this little tragedy~
There’s always something so personal, about things we keep, things that we use. We give them personalities, they become part of our lives, part of our day to day until it feels like a machine is alive.
They’re not alive, not for long at least.
Looking down at the familiar robot was, soothing, if nothing else. The poor thing was outdated, by almost a decade now. And though I managed to keep her running extremely well, good enough that she used to be able to beat newer models that were three or even four gens newer than her. Her limitations finally caught up to her. Her motherboard had started to corrode, her RAM was slowing down, too much information had passed through her various sensors, too many new upgrades had been added to a system that was never intended to last this long, too much time had passed for the poor thing. She looked up at me, the faceplate flickered as she tried to process what I was thinking, and to most anyone else she looked perfectly fine. I could see the issues adding up. The LED’s in her ‘eyes’ glowed out of sync, and on occasions her ‘mouth’ would lag behind what she was saying. She couldn’t remember things as well as she used to, even her motors, brand new, weren’t enough to keep her body moving in time with what she wanted.
“Miss?” She ‘spoke’, in the series of cracks and pops that I always found so soothing, so endearing. I almost couldn’t stand the thought of replacing her, but I'm sure I’d get over it eventually, after all I’d be running the new bot through the old one’s memories, and downloading some the basic parts of the personality matrix onto a blank slate.
I knelt, curling my fingers under the boxy ‘head’ of the bot, listening to her coo as her body relaxed, the plates I had installed on her years ago were coded to relay ‘touch’ to her ‘brain’ though looking at the plates now, they were coated in scratches and dents, chips and cracks lined the edges where plates met. “such a pretty girl” came my almost mournful whisper, and she gave another coo, closing her ‘eyes’ as she leaned her ‘face’ into my touch. I pulled a link cable out from her ‘neck’ connecting it to my computer and running the program I had open, starting the process of copying the essential data and necessary information off of her system.
“Miss?” she ‘spoke’ again, ‘eyes’ flickering to watch me as I ran my fingers along her ‘chest’ spreading my fingers against the bulky chestplate that held a dozen different motors and sensory inputs. I slipped a few fingers into her body, finding the familiar way in by snaking my hand through the area where her ‘arm’ met her ‘shoulder’ and with a feather light touch, I caressed the spot where her RAM cards sat, a faint spark catching my fingers and making the bot shudder as she let out a soft hum. I knew her well, I built her after all, fixed her up with new toys and upgrades, rewired old parts, added slots for her memory so she would stay in high quality even after all these years. Though as I glance at the computer screen, a blinking message alerted me that everything I needed out of her was copied and ready to be uploaded to a new model.
I love this bot, I love the nights I would spend curled up next to her, enough pillows pressed against her that I couldn’t feel the hard metal frame. I love the time I would spend with her walking through the woods, asking her about this plant or that one. Watching with pride as she identified the plant and found information on it from her database. I love hearing her talk about the moon and the sky and the stars. I love hearing her moan and gasp and groan when we would indulge in some of the more carnal desires, when her fingers would pump inside of me or when she’d control a toy of mine in public, when I would touch her body, when I would reach into her and be so gentle, rubbing wires and feeling her buck against my hand. When I would kiss her faceplate and feel the faint static arc against my lips. Now more than ever I love this bot, but curiosity outweighs my love.
Unplugging the link cable from the computer I let it zip back into her ‘neck’ anything from now on wouldn’t be uploaded to the new bot, and the bot in front of me now existed in a sort of void state. All the old memories have been copied, all the ones to come won’t be stored. So with my fingers still gentle inside her chestplate, I found the processing unit that was responsible for most of her body movements. I could hear her coo again before I dug my fingernails under the unit, and pulled.

Advance digital equity today or usher in a future of egregious economic inequality - Connect Humanity
At Marconi Society’s “Decade of Digital Inclusion” conference last year, we heard from leaders in technology and digital equity. What follows is a précis of my remarks and some additional reflections for the session, ‘The (Big) Data Economy: Inclusion and Fairness’, in which I focus on the importance of digital equity now to secure a future that works for all.
When ‘good enough’, isn’t good enough
Rural and low-income communities have been expected to make-do with antiquated infrastructure and low-performing technologies offered at high costs, such as legacy copper (DSL) or coaxial cable networks, or satellite service. Time and again, communities are told not to expect fiber-based networks, but to settle for whatever technology is offered to them. In his book, Farm Fresh Broadband, Christopher Ali calls this the “politics of good enough”.
Digital inclusion — having access to quality broadband infrastructure, devices, and the digital skills to use them — is key to upward mobility. It is a portal to healthcare and education, a platform to start and grow a business, and the first rung on the ladder to a well paid job.
For much of the 20th Century, individuals were able to enter the middle class, with or without a college degree, through jobs in manufacturing and retail. Today most jobs have a digital component and employers across sectors look for candidates with well-honed digital skills. If you haven’t grown up with access to data and devices, you’re starting at a disadvantage. And if you don’t have a computer and a connection, good luck applying for a job in a world where recruitment happens almost entirely online.
Digital exclusion doesn’t just punish job seekers, it holds back the creation of jobs in the first place. When a community doesn’t have the fiber infrastructure to attract and retain 21st century businesses, it loses out on so many fronts. Fewer work opportunities. A lower tax base. Less activity in the local economy. Higher unemployment — and the economic and social costs that often follow in distressed communities.
Digital inclusion is economic inclusion
‘Digital exclusion’ is ‘economic exclusion’. By maintaining the digital divide, this politics of ‘good enough’ will perpetuate ever greater income and wealth inequality. By the same token, ‘digital inclusion is economic inclusion’ and by pursuing what Jonathan Sallet calls broadband networks ‘fit for the future’ we can start unwinding the entrenched poverty that has robbed communities of a brighter future.
We cannot miss this moment. The longer we wait to close the digital divide, the harder it’ll be for those on the wrong side to catch up. We have the technology, the established research methodologies and data sets, and best practices. We have business and operating models, philanthropy, and, in the U.S., the Community Reinvestment Act, that can support the connection of low-income, BIPOC, and rural communities that large national providers have not served equitably. Let’s heed the warning of one of our most trusted leaders in broadband policy, Blair Levin: “…our country may take the biggest backwards step any country has ever taken in increasing, rather than closing, the digital divide.” Let’s not blindly proceed on that path.
Civic participation at its best
There are local and regional ISPs, co-ops, local governments, and community partners across the country who are rolling up their sleeves and building next generation broadband networks for underserved communities. And they know better than to aim for the minimum speed, i.e., the FCC’s definition of 25/3 mbps that seems to be frozen in time, driven by a scarcity narrative in a world where accelerating technology demands require that networks ‘fit for the future’ offer far greater speeds. This is civic participation at its best — and the government, philanthropy, and the private sector must support these efforts.
Rather than wasting time entertaining inaccurate, unreliable, expensive maps (at least $44 million for the new FCC “Federal Broadband Map” by CostQuest) and catering to powerful companies that write the rules and misrepresent their service, we must engage with communities to understand their needs, their context, and work with them to shape our shared digital future. This is the work I joined Connect Humanity to do, with a special focus on the Texas-Mexico border region.
When we make investments in local communities, we support an inclusive economy and opportunities for under-represented groups to use, create, and own assets in the digital economy. That level of inclusion is necessary for a diversity of people to become the makers and shapers of fair algorithms, the owners of local and regional ISPs, the ethical managers of the internet of things, and the leaders who engage communities to make policy and law to protect people from the deleterious use of big data and AI.
