klanghelm plugins (all these are made by one dude. mjuc is a great vintage style compressor, the dc8c is a pretty featured compressor for the price, sdrr has a particularly nice tube saturation/distortion, and vumt is a great metering plugin, i have vumt on every single project since 2019)

analog obsession (if you donate $5 to their patreon you can get every single plugin they make. also all made and maintained by one person. lots of different things, so i recommend just downloading everything and exploring the functions of the plugins)

tokyo dawn labs (all very high quality mixing stuff. they have free versions of most of their premium stuff and they're quite featured despite being free. ez.)

kilohearts (they recently made all their main effects free. and if you want their flagship stuff, its all rent-to-own as well.)

sforzando (soundfont player. if you dont know what soundfonts are, theyre essentially really condensed, lightweight sampled instruments. they can often sound rlly cheap or tacky [which might be good, i definitely love that sound] but just install this and google [instrument] soundfont and just find lots of free instruments that way)

togu audio line (some free effects and instruments if you scroll down. but i also recommend TAL Sampler if you want a cool sampler and can afford it)

So, um. Hi, it's me again. Happy new years and I hope you like badly planned posters because I sure have one for you.

I have more thoughts, now, and I'm going to try to put most of it into a post. I tried writing a scene but it was just info dumping and not very interesting, so here's me info dumping right to you! I'm including the full character illustrations too. Hop on in and let's go cruisin

The Setting

A galaxy with wormhole pockets that allow for quick interplanetary travel. Might be magic. There's a lot of technology and a little bit of magic. Despite all the technology, no sophisticated AI has actually worked out, so there aren't androids or anything, and robots aren't super common.

The Hyrule system has one star, called Hylia after the goddess. The star has three smaller star satellites, called Din, Farore, and Nayru. Several livable planets dwell in the system:

The Plains has native Hylians and Minish. It used to be called Hyrule until the name was expanded to cover the whole system. It's mostly towns and rivered forests, with one large continent and one enormous sea dotted with islands.

Ordon is a twin planet system with native Twili on one and humans on the other. Humans came to settle after the solar system united, and are still brand new to the area

Domain is a water planet where Zora live, high in seafood exports. Shallow Zora are generally even-tempered and are the ones that interact with others most often. Deep Zora are hostile and have designed their own ships to maraud abroad, though the Shallow Zora have a tentative peace treaty with them

Other planets I haven't named yet with Rito, Gerudo, Gorons, and forest fey

Long ago, when space travel through the Hyrule system just began, an impending apocalyptic war caused the Hylians to leave their native planet on a massive ship called Skyloft. Those on the planet were subject to wars and diseases and cataclysms until only one godlike lich remained. Those on Skyloft embraced peace and established relations with other governments throughout the galaxy (and intermarried. That's important.)

Eventually, a hero appeared, and the Skyloft Hylians returned home to rebuild.

Our Characters' Stories

Okay honestly I'm not sure yet about all this, so I'll mostly keep quiet. The broad strokes are as follows—an unsuspecting Link is employed as some kind of security by a large company, tentatively named Sorcerer Enterprises. The same company directs Shadow to kidnap him. They artificially activate Link's long-dormant non-Hylian genes to induce the split, turning him into four highly malnourished people with strong elemental associations.

Conditions aren't great, but our heroes (plus Shadow, eventually, and Zelda) manage to escape and topple Sorcerer Enterprises in the process. Unfortunately, there's a bigger fish. They escape with files and information, enough to know that Ganon is out there, intending to take over the system and the galaxy. They know how to stop him, they think.

Characters!

I talked a bit about them in my earlier post, so I'll just go through the illustrations and point out the details! Please forgive the iffy quality, I was trying to be fast and not perfect, and I think it turned out all right.

Green is associated with air. He's the pilot, and also wears a lil air purifier/compressor thing because he's generally in need of more oxygen than his lungs can normally get (thus the tube thingy.) He also has rocket shoes and a cool cape. :) The thing on his arm is a portable computer, most others have them, too. The bright cyan indicates cool technology, usually.

Red is, of course, fire, and gets cold easily. He has heat-resistant work gloves and here is shown lighting an explosive. Whoops. He also has a heated sweater but I decided to not draw it this time. His boots have steel-capped toes because he bangs into things on accident a lot.

Blue is water and gets warm fast, so his clothes are lighter materials. He usually has cans of compressed water on him, along with medical supplies and rations and flashlights and spare batteries and— anyway he has some cool armor stuff and an undercut (because that feels so right.)

Vio is earth and the tech boy. His weapon is his backpack, which can pop out with a tiny little artillery post. His hair is longer but not too much longer, he hasn't had a lot of time to grow it out. That jumpsuit thingy he's wearing was designed for an alien race that has an oozelike form, it squeezes and exerts pressure evenly across the entire body. As the earth-element-aligned, he doesn't like feeling as if he'll explode.

Ngl I love Zelda's design here. She's not exactly a princess here, but she does have traces of light magic. She's also good with a gun. Her elbow and knee pads can give her a full-body shield if she needs it.

Shadow is a genetically modified clone of the original Link. They made him to be a replacement, or a nemesis, he's not sure, but he's on his way to find his own identity now. (he might go a little too far sometimes. He painted purple flames on his boots.) Is his hair fluffy enough?

Their ship isn't new, but it's not garbage, either. It's a bit small, with six of them. They have a quest!!

Hi! I was wondering if it was possible for you to label exactly which vocal pedal is which on your Smiles Nov/Dec tour post? I may be able to use it for a university assignment but am struggling to identify exactly which pedal is which, mainly with the Eventide H9 and the Soma Laboratory Cosmos. (even with it being the best photo of Thom's vocals pedals that I've found)

The guitar board has changed a fair bit in the past two years. But the vocal board has remained largely identical. The setup in the photo above is from The Smile's May-July 2022 tour. For the band's Nov-Dec 2022 tour, the vocal board was the same.

If you do a web search for pictures of the Cosmos and the H9, you'll find that they look quite different from each other. So you shouldn't have any trouble deciphering which is which in the above photo.

That said, we'll include a list of the vocal pedals for the curious. For info on the guitar board, check out the entry for "May-July 2022" on Thom's pedalboards page.

It must be noted that the physical layout of these pedals has no relationship to their signal order (how they're connected to each other). They are placed where they are on the board purely for convenience of use.

In fact, there are three separate signals passing through Thom's "vocal" board. Two of those signals are effect sends from the FOH mixer. A microphone cannot be connected directly to a pedalboard without a serious reduction in sound quality. So instead, Thom's vocal mic is connected to the FOH mixer (likely via a high quality microphone preamp). This also gives flexibility: the mic's signal can be passed through various studio effects (compressors and equalizers) before hitting the pedals. Placing different pedals on different effect sends gives further flexibility.

The third signal passing through the vocal board is the output of Thom's Teenage Engineering OP1. Although the OP1 and most of its pedals are kept on a small pedalboard with his synth gear, the FV30 is placed on Thom's "vocal" board so he can adjust the volume of the synth loops while singing on Free In The Knowledge.

Thom's vocal setup for the current (summer 2024) tour is largely identical, except that he's replaced the Eventide H9 with an Eventide Pitchfactor (we pointed this out in a recent post about their March 2024 rehearsal setup). This suggests that Thom has been using the H9 for pitch shifting sounds, rather than any of the other sounds the pedal is capable of.

websites have built-in compressors so that they don't have to use so much computing power to show you a full high res photo as soon as you scroll to it. compressing a file will make it look crunchy. but if you natively save it, right from your program, to a smaller resolution (I'd suggest no more than 1,500px) it won't have to compress it as much, if at all. plus, it saves you from art thieves being able to save your full res 3000px+ photo to print for sale or feed to ai models.

audio mastering: Why digital?

When I started mastering, I chose to work with digital tools and still work that way today. There are a number of reasons for that choice, which I'll gladly explain here in more detail since some artists, bands or labels are often curious about it.

Experimentation and DIY

The artists/bands I work with almost exclusively come from a DIY ethos. As such, they almost always lie on the unconventional side of things: unusual music genres, aesthetic choices, recording techniques, recording spaces, mixing tools, ... There's no doubt that a band recording in state-of-the-art facilities in a well-established genre will benefit from the subtle colour and depth that analog gear can impart to a master, as it's often the missing piece that will turn a collection of songs into an album -one of the main purposes of mastering to me. But for a DIY production, what prevents that cohesiveness is usually too much colour [1]. With that starting point, I have then to identify what constitutes the core of the work in order to present it in the best possible manner, and digital tools are almost always the best candidates for that kind of surgical work.

The needs of the music

'Classic' mastering gear will always include, at minimum, an equalizer and a compressor. But what happens when you're working with music that doesn't inherently need to be dynamically compressed? Whether it's harsh noise, drone or any other kind of music where transients (or percussive sounds, if you prefer) do not need to be tamed in any way. I know the obvious answer would be not to use a compressor even if you have one... but why have one at all, if you almost never need it? And as far as equalizers are concerned, it's worth remembering that the first parametric EQs tried to offer the most linear behaviour possible (i.e. with the least distortion) [2]. In this case, what could be better than well-coded digital implementations?

DSP and linearity

Digital processing tools have made an incredible leap forward in terms of reliability, quality and fidelity in the last decades. While linear processing (gain, EQ, ...) has always been -by nature- in favour of digital, some non-linear processors from teams like Tokyo Dawn Labs or Tone Projects (to name a few) could even outperform their analog counterparts. Others simply could not exist in analog form. And because these tools are digital in nature, one don't need to rely on any magic to improve anything, but on the technical capabilities of the operator and their ability to identify the aesthetic goals of the artists.

A/D & D/A conversion

Speaking of digital and analog, it is worth mentioning that any conversion from one to the other is far from being effectless. In fact, even state-of-the-art converters will exhibit audible effects when using a simple interconnect cable in their loops. It is true that any operator's tasteful processing choices will have a much more profound effect than this, but remembering that my main obstacle is too much colour, it makes sense for me to avoid this altogether.

Prices

It's no secret that quality gear comes at a price, which is reflected on the final service charge. Analog mastering has one (fully justified from higher retail and maintenance costs, amongst other things) because it requires a high level of technical excellence. And with many processors, that level of excellence can be achieved for much less with digital implementations. To keep mastering affordable for anyone, from any background, I chose to stay in that realm.

Personal preferences

While I sure love to tweak knobs, see LEDs glow and needles move, I know myself well enough to choose what best suits to my working habits and preferences. As an artist, I would be frustrated if I couldn't easily ask for enough listening time or potential revisions on a mastering job. Others like to work with their clients in the same room to avoid revisions and artists changing their minds at the last minute. Thus, it's important to choose a workflow that matches the way you like to do things, and the way you'd like things to go if you were the client yourself.

End results

There's no doubt that the "analog vs. digital" debate still stirs up some controversy and radical opinions in the audio community. Of course, the fact many people still engage in it shows that some things need to be clarified a bit. Linearity, data encoding, bit depth and many others concepts are still difficult to grasp and therefore generate many misconceptions. Having said that, it is sometimes useful to step back of our own perception and admit that the way we work always have less influence than the first note or the first sound recorded. In the end, it's just a matter of choosing the type of tools and workflow that suits us best.
