VERIFYING YOU ARE HUMAN...

I started this blog in 2004, with several pages entitled ‘God Save us From Religions’. Not much changed outside in twenty years, but it does seem worse, so my stupidity must be increasing. Realism? ‘The end move in politics is always to pick up a gun’. Buckminster Fuller. Palestine, now over 35,000 dead. Over thirty thousand of whom were civilians, Benny still appears to be going all out to avoid his and his wife’s corruption charges by proving what a patriotic hero he is. The Holy wasteland, crater land.

Blind faith tested under ‘laboratory’ conditions fails beneath the beautiful remorselessness of doubt and actual experience. Christ, the Dalai Lama, Ghandi et al, appear to lean to the left with ideas the ‘God-fearing’ right wing describe as liberal/socialist/Marxist. Love and respect each all others. The most unchristian Christians are the evil angelicals. Being good humoured, reasonable or intelligent seems ungodly weakness to them. The greatest fraud (out of an unholy host of them) perpetrated by the Church is that the devil exists. ‘Satan’ is the scapegoat for the genuine evil of the wrongly far righteous.

Which brings me onto The Heritage Foundation and their foul masterplan of Project 2025… a manifesto to be used as a bible for ‘the next Republican president’. This is a policy document for an eviscerating pogrom against the federal government, the judiciary and mass media, to replace all the left leaning Deep State shills with moral decent right wingers to reset education and laws. With an expected side effect of exporting total Nationalism globally. So, all in a democracy would be ultimately controlled by politicians returning favours to policy setting dark money donors who are the actual ‘deep state’. Brilliant.

Trying to avoid the overuse of ‘is’ and ‘are’, as I am aware (or seem to think so) that I am only a very amateur writer of op-ed pieces, but having spent several years researching, must say this; Anyone who believes in the right-wing idea of a ‘deep state IS a moron. There are business intrigues, bureaucracy to the ninth circle of Hell, pseudo religious groups, criminal organisations, greedy bankers, state secrets all seeking control…but no Deep State. This is a lie to focus attention as usual away from reality, to accumulate power in the hands of those propagating the lie. There is no invisible sky wizard either. Hallelujah!

Of course, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, (Steve Bannonites that they are) want identical things in the UK, replacing troublesome judges, police chiefs, parliament, civil service and the ‘biased’ BBC with political appointees. Anyway, another English rant coming…14 bloody years of Tories… ‘Ministers are to broaden the government’s definition of extremism as part of a clampdown on people and groups undermining Britain’s institutions and values.’

So, would that include various former and current cabinet members and prime ministers? Or is breaking the law, accepting large ‘donations’ (bribes) and then giving the donor an honour, sending dick pics, accepting cash for lobbyist’s questions to be asked, fast tracking friend’s dodgy business deals without checks on tendering, marginalising the poor to a truly inhuman standard and systematically ruining the NHS not counted as undermining in any way? Sunak the supercilious has asked useless ‘levelling up’ bug eyed disco dancer Gove to lead a crack team to thwart radicals at every turn. Including harder controls of extremism on campus.  Nice that MI5 have finally got round to hauling in bosses of 24 leading universities to warn them about ongoing enemy states infiltrating their seats of learning. So to speak.

Whereas most fine law-abiding citizens could see a benefit in having stricter dealings with idiots who stop trains, traffic (blocking those trying to get to work or in need of hospitals) and gaily throw paint and powder in galleries, sports events and flower shows, it is not too hard to see a time when quiet protesters holding a blank piece of paper are arrested, as in the far East. This green and septic isle where patriotic hedge fund managers linked to the government short the pound and Britannia waives the rules again. Politicians are the ones doing the undermining of this country’s’ values.

A recent (April) social media post by the Conservative Party trumpeted ‘BRITAIN IS THE SECOND MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.’  Which it promptly withdrew within 48 hours, as ridicule over its utter inaccuracy and the pictures used exposed it for the four flush turd it was. Turning a blind eye to government lies is not patriotic whichever country you were born in. Many here are having to perform do it yourself dentistry and fewer and fewer people other than the criminally rich can afford to live healthily or safely. Cuando merda tiva valer pobre nasce sem cu. Britain has screwed itself. We have so few genuine friends abroad these days that the country can only rely on ever dodgier characters and shadier deals just to get some money, which in turn only props up the wealthy. The rich do not bring money into the country, they bank it offshore or in Switzerland. But at least Russia and China like to buy lots of properties here, eh? ‘Levelling up’ is just as bigger sham of rancid bowels as was Reagan’s ‘Trickle down’ economy in the eighties where yuppies spunked it all. Scraps for the workers, threats to the passive middle classes. Cold hearted arrogance to the poor and any unlike us. This island chose to be more isolated…be careful what you wish for. Very simple to sabotage our underwater cables, the Net, electricity, gas…we are extremely dependant on subsea infrastructure for essential living.  Very little cost or risk to the enemy to cut us off. Everything we do politically (and a lot socially) has been playing into Putin’s hands for the last 14 years.

In all democratic counties, the main and minority wings of society are encouraged to flap on about National pride, fighting the other religion, the woke, the racist, the multi genders, the outsiders and it doesn’t matter one whit which side ‘wins’ because they don’t hold the actual power. But they do get very tied up wasting time and energy having their emotions manipulated against them, which is the point…weaken and undermine to the Rubicon of internal collapse. Europe, the UK and America all have politicians spouting bile and bilge about ‘the deep state’ as if they are rebels against the mainstream… and every one of these mouth breathing bottom feeding swine is only doing it to gain power for themselves. But ‘the people’ still believe it. They love venal leaders, especially those who mention restoring ‘order’ with faith, pride and a cleansing of subversive aliens. Meanwhile, the UK is still using security systems and nuclear companies with backdoors to Beijing. How clever of us.

Hope things are going well in Tiblisi, good luck with the Georgian Dream. Seems strange Bidzina would want the Kremlin’s ‘foreign agent’ law to pass after having spent a long time speaking in favour of joining NATO and the EU. Bread buttered on both sides. Goddess bless the Cz Republic for shutting down ‘Voice of Europe’, a Russian disinformation campaign via an online site and YT channel. Journalists with very western names who don’t exist writing fake news and others doing interviews with various anti-western politicians (several of whom are actually European, traitors within) propagating Russian pig manure to sew discord among the Union. The Voice of the Orcs lead by a president who could be Gollum’s bald ugly grandmother. The gremlin in the Kremlin. But let’s not stoop to childishly denigrate such a fine diminutively upstanding murderer, eh? Blue eyes are not enough, as Czechs say.

Funny how many far-right politicians in Europe describe the Russian invasion as ‘just’, because Ukraine is a country run by ‘Nazis’. Missing the point that Nazi countries don’t vote for a Jewish president and Prime Minister and that their own politics have a great deal of similarity with National Socialist ideas, behaviour and rhetoric. Also amuses me in midnight jet black humour that so many right wingers are willing to do the dirty work of a bald ex left wing communist. Greed for power for the otherwise impotent is a deeply alluring thing, eh? Masochists who would be sadists.

16 members of the European Parliament engaged with ‘Voice of Europe’ to spout Moscow’s propaganda. Any country with Russian inhabitants can (with prompting) request ‘help’ from Uncle Vlad who will be happy to step in and support his citizens from imaginary threats and spread his avowed anti-imperialist empire via force and colonisation. So, no hypocrisy there. Just reclaiming former territories who wanted independence. What if Britain decided to do this? Oh wait, we can’t because the Tories defunded our armed forces.

As I repeatedly write (for some kind of balance) the two-faced double standard West is maybe not the best, but at least we don’t mass slaughter our own citizens, forcibly transfer thousands of children from their homes to another country and indoctrinate them in the name of ‘protection’. Nor do we deliberately fire missiles at civilian blocks of flats or torture and rape noncombatants in the streets. Or pretend to ‘rehabilitate’ any who speak out by interning them in camps to be beaten to death or poison them in other countries. Or hold ‘elections’ where there are no viable alternative candidates for whom to vote. (If I said you had a corrupt election, would you hold it against me?) Arf.

Elon Musk the pyromaniac fireman welcoming Martin Sellner’s (far) right to free speech…how long before the twitter symbol morphs into a swastika? ‘The relentless pursuit of the truth’ is the stated goal of ‘X’. Saying your opinions and feelings out loud or writing them down does not imply Truth unless provable.

Speaking of liars, Trump the reptile continues to work as Moscow’s ultimate Useful Idiot. If convicted of his many (alleged, HA) crimes, he could still run and serve as President, should he win. THAT is how bollocks America is. Imagine having a criminal as a leader of a democratic country! He sits in court, glowering at the jury and the cameras like a mafia boss, a spoiled clinically deranged child who could once again be in charge of nuclear weapons. Majorie Taylor Greene, the Liz Truss of US politics (‘Jewish space lasers’?) wants to be his running mate. Just perfect. Swamping the drain. Trump’s lawyer says he ‘is cloaked in innocence.’ Drenched in excrement seems to be a better phrase.

Luckily, The Earth is intelligent…think about that for a few seconds with logic and instinct. She will certainly be aware from tuning in, how close we are to a third world war and the damage already done. Irreversible for humans but not her. Okay I'm having trouble finding everyone's posts from Friday. But I just watched chapter 9 and I have some thoughts.

Opening the episode with Din saying he doesn't gamble then ending it with him making a massive gamble was interesting. Although I genuinely don't think he ever does anything he doesn't believe he can do.

The fights in this episode are amazing. Just stunning:

The fight at the arena. The Child ducking when he sees the Birds activate. "I'm not." Really. Din, stop being so goddamn fucking hot, I'm trying to watch the damn show! The whole dangling the gangster part. "You won't die by my hand." (one of the best parts of the character Din Djarin is he is both viciously ruthless and honorable to a fault. I love it!)

The fighting at the end. Both men flying in sync to kill the beast. The Raiders and townsfolk grudgingly working together. But it would have worked better just leaving the loaded bantha in the valley, luring the best out, and detonating it. Fewer civilian deaths but what do I know, I wasn't raised in the fighting corps. And god at the end when Din soars out of the monster's mouth! I that was how the episode would end as soon as I saw the explosives. But still so fucking cool! Is there a name for that trope? I call it the Hercules.

Can we talk for a second about how Din looks in this ep? The strides, the poses and posture. He exudes so much bde that it physically hurts me. Clearly a lot of that is Mandalorian in nature, if those images of Boba Fett from the comics tell us anything (Fett sitting spread in his ship and Din doing it on the wagon at Sorgan have p much the same energy). Just looking fine as hell through the whole thing, even covered in deadly dragon stomach acid.

And can we talk about how much he says this episode? He explains the Tuskens' behavior, translates, plans, barters, smooches doggies, etc. He talks a lot. And I think that's interesting. Din has this reputation as being awkward in social situations and quiet. And like, it's one thing feeling shy around the beautiful widow who's hitting on you. But he says what he means clearly and more or less concisely, including some one-liners and sarcasm. I think he could be described as "laconic" (my character does describe him as such in the thing I'm writing), which means they use as few words as possible to get their point across. Din has no hesitation in speaking, he just prefers to only speak when he has something to say, if that makes sense.

So happy to see Aunt Peli! And Din being like "eh let them work" That's what we call growth.

The casting. I nearly lost my shit when Timothy Olyphant was under the helmet, looking like a whole ass meal. Like that is the most flattering haircut and beard combo I've ever seen on him. Don't @me but he could get it. And poor typecast Leguizamo. Still great tho. He was fun little asshole.

I love when this show doubles down on the western themes:

Vanth's name, accent, role, and general appearance all line up with a small town wild west sheriff. Just showing up and saving the town, so they're like, you're the Lone Ranger now! Olyphant has played western roles before, including voicing The Spirit of the West (an avatar of the legends and ideals of the wild west modeled on Clint Eastwood's western characters) in the animated film Rango (a lot of the Mandalorian's aesthetic comes from Eastwood's movies).

The Mandalorian theme but softly strummed on a Spanish (nylon string) guitar is very evocative of a border town.

The tuskens represent an Indian tribe. The abandoned mining town. The mysterious stranger who comes to town and saves it. Vanth and Din nearly have a quickdraw shootout! The child is hiding in a spittoon for chrissakes!

It really echoes the 7 Samurai theme of chapter 4. I know it's an overlapping, repeating theme in western film. I guess I was surprised to see it again so quickly.

I don't know how I feel about Din speaking Tusken. Signing was one thing. But I just giggled uncomfortably the whole time feeling it was kinda silly (and I had assumed the reason he signed was because humans couldn't speak Tusken). Was that our big hero, heartthrob, and favorite actor Mr. Pascal sitting in the studio making those noises? Rrrhehh rheh rrhehh! I dunno I'm just. Reeling.

Isn't interesting that Din would annihilate the entire populace of Jawas without batting an eye, but he would do almost anything to protect the Sand People? I know there's something to that, about marginalized/eugenicized groups versus like colonialism and whatever vulture like construct you would attribute to the Jawas. But I'm not smart enough to articulate it.

Okay, so the obvious: Boba Fett. Really shocked to see his armor on someone else. I'd already seen the casting of Morrison, so I wasn't like, "is he dead?" and I knew right away this hick didn't take it off him. I wonder if the Jawas stunned him and removed it. Either way, there's going to be hell to pay. I can't wait to see Din and Boba interact; I wonder how they'll respond to each other. And even though Fett should be in his early 40s (I think) he really looks like hell. I mean, I know he's seen some shit. But I wonder what's been up with him in the last decade or so.

Some stuff I thought I noticed, but I need y'all to help me confirm:

Was that Anakin's podracer engine?

Was that C-3PO graffitied on the wall in the dirty city?

Were we supposed to recognize R5?

There's a couple others but I forgot em. I gotta watch it again.

Some questions:

What was the spherical thing the Tusken Raiders recovered from the beast's remains? The scene mirrored the Jawas and the mudhorn's TSUGA! Tsuga tsuga! Tsuuuga! But that didn't look like an egg. If I didn't know better I would swear it was a pearl. (which almost makes sense if you take into account that this guy eats dirt for a living and could have an organ or extra stomach in there like those gross hard balls they used to pull out of ox bellies) Or was it mentioned earlier and I didn't catch it? There was a lot going on.

What are the sand doggies? They're so cute! And that totally establishes our mans as a dog person. Writers, start your fics!

I'm a bit confused about the town's history. How have the people survived for so long with the beast there? Was it the Krayt dragon that wiped it literally off the map? How does the slaving mining guild fit in there?

It really looks in chapter 4 that those krill are native (it's not explicitly stated tho). If no one even knows where Sorgan is and it doesn't have a big export economy, how do these people in the middle of buttfuck nowhere have spotchka?

On that note, how did that city gangster hear about Fett/Vanth? I mean, I dig that he's a collector of beskar'gam, but like, that's still way out there.

The jingling spurs sound in chapter 5 is deliberately obvious when that mysterious figure comes upon Fennec Shand. Can we assume that's Cobb Vanth there? Because clearly, Fett has been without his armor for a while. If it was Vanth, what did he do with her? I don't believe for a second that she's dead. He's not a bounty hunter and he wouldn't have any idea she was valuable since the Guild had abandoned Tatooine. Barter for help/transportation /goods/labor /etc? Also, if it was Vanth, did he witness the whole thing? If so, he knows who Din is. Maybe knows Toro. I dunno. Lots of thoughts. Did he just stumble upon her while traveling back to his village? I forgot the name already lol Mos Pelegrino?

Okay it's nearly 4 am. I genuinely can't remember if I had anything else to say. Please continue to tag your spoilers cuz I will again not get to view the episode until after y'all do next week. Story Description: Tommy Shelby is the owner and CEO of Shelby Company Limited. Starting out as a Bookmaker, Tommy had big ideas to expand his riches. In the past ten years, the company has grown rapidly to expand its business ventures from bars to producing alcohol, manufacturing motor vehicle parts, and exporting. One of the richest men in Great Britain, Tommy Shelby, has it all. Unfortunately, the death of his wife, Grace, left the multi-millionaire mogul alone and depressed. He needed someone to fulfill his needs and deepest darkest desires.

Chapter Summary: Easter has arrived. Tommy is spending it with his family, while Rose is forced to spend time with her ex. We learn that Tommy does not always want to be in control.

There was a part of Tommy that wished he did not have to be in control all of the time. It was understandable that he be the one in charge of his business as he had no other person to rely on to step up to the plate. Michael was still too young. Also, Tommy had been developing doubts and distrust towards his cousin. It didn’t help that Michael would schedule secret meetings with potential business partners and act as if he was doing it to help Tommy and the company. Tommy used to rely on and confide in his Aunt Polly. Yet, she began to distance herself more and more from the company, especially since getting remarried to Aberama Gold, a fellow business associate to Tommy. John and Arthur had their business deals to worry about, and Ada spent most of her time in the States.

He wished Grace was still alive. She was Tommy’s number one supporter. He shared almost everything with Grace (the legal side) and truly valued her advice and opinions. When Tommy was with Grace, he was able just to be himself. He was allowed to be calm and not have to overwork his mind. He didn’t have to be in control.

It was only with Grace that Tommy allowed another person to have total control over him in the bedroom. Both he and Grace shared characteristics of a dominant and submissive. They often switched roles, with Tommy as the dominant and Grace as the submissive, and vice versa. He loved it when Grace used to dominate him. No one would have suspected the sweet-natured blonde woman had an alpha personality behind closed doors, who was and controlling and overtly sexual.

With Grace gone, Tommy never allowed himself to be vulnerable in front of anyone. Lizzie tried to get Tommy to open that side of him up, but he denied her. He couldn’t do it. A part of Tommy felt as if it would be a betrayal to Grace. Both Ada and Polly constantly told Tommy that it was okay for him to move on from Grace.

“She gave you, on her deathbed, the permission to move on, Thomas. Respect your deceased wife’s wishes,” Aunt Polly would tell him. 

“Find someone to have a family with, Tommy. Charlie deserves to have a mother figure in his life and possible siblings if it were to happen. Let yourself be happy,” were Ada’s words of encouragement. 

No doubt Tommy would hear those exact words at his sister’s house this Sunday afternoon to celebrate Easter with the entire Shelby clan. Boy, it was going to be a long day. Charlie ended up spending the night at Ada’s with his cousins. Tommy was glad for that as indeed his sister would provide his son with an Easter basket. Tommy was not one for decorative or holiday pleasantries. That was all Grace. When Grace passed, Ada, Polly, or Esme would be the ones to step in and make sure Charlie celebrated his birthday with a party or invite him over for holiday festivities. Guilt would riddle Tommy at that notion that he could not provide his only child with a happy environment. Yes, Tommy loved Charlie dearly. Rose stood back, arms crossed, as Louis hugged his father. It was a sight that had Rose feel a pang in her chest. It reminded her that the three of them could have been a family, a typical family. That is what Louis deserved. Nick looked over at Rose and smiled at her. It was a warm and genuine smile. Rose felt like she was sixteen all over again.

“Rosie, you look…beautiful as always,” Nick complimented and went in for a hug but stopped himself. “We can hug, right?’

Rose scoffed, “Of course we can hug, weirdo.” The former lovers embraced, and Rose felt a familiarity, the feeling of being safe and uncertain. She pulled away. “Well, we better get going. Louis, where did you decide we go to eat?”

“Bella Roma. Can we stop by an Apple store after we’re done eating? I want to be able to switch over from my old iPhone to the new one. Mum, got me a new iPhone.” Louis held up his phone to his dad.

“Dad asked you about the guy you are currently seeing,” Louis answered. He was frustrated that his dad brought up Tommy. 

“Oh yeah, what about Tommy?” 

“Just wondered how long you have been seeing this guy? How did you two meeting by the way?” Nick questioned. “I’ll be frank; I was stunned to find out that the mother of my child is dating the one and only Tommy Shelby. Isn’t he an OBE?”

Rolling her eyes, Rose interceded, “No, he has not met Tommy.”

“And I don’t want to,” Louis mumbled under his breath.

“Hey, here is an idea, how we don’t talk about Tommy, okay,” ordered Rose, and both guys agreed.

After sharing a tiramisu, Rose had enough and was ready to get back home. Nick offered to pay, and Rose didn’t fight him on it. She figured it was his way of showing he had his own money and could provide a meal for them. With their leftovers boxed up, Rose led the way back to Nick’s car. 

“Louis, did you still want to go to the Apple store?” Rose asked him. 

“Can we? I thought you wanted to get back home.”

“I do, but we can get the leftovers in the fridge, and I can take you,” replied Rose. Truthfully, she did not want to go. She had enough excitement for one day.

Suddenly, Nick piped in, “I can take him if you feel like staying home.”

Rose turned around to look at Louis, “Is that okay with you?”

“That’s fine,” answered Louis, happily. He was excited to get to spend some alone time with his dad.

Nick parked in front of the house. Rose and Louis and got out of the car. He handed the pizza boxes to Rose and got in the front seat. “I’ll see you late, sweetie. By Nick. Take care.”

“Bye, Rosie. Talk to you later.”

Rose waved them off and walked towards the house. She breathed a sigh of relief upon entry. She went upstairs to undress and put on a pair of comfortable sweats and sweater. All Rose wanted to do was relax. 

Looking at the clock, it was only 3:30 PM. Lunch with Nick felt like it went on longer. As Rose was about to settle herself on the couch to watch television, the doorbell rang. “Now, who the Hell is that?” 

“Fucking ‘ell, people. It’s Easter Sunday, for God’s sake.” She walked to the front door and opened it to find none other than Tommy Shelby. 

“Tommy, what are you doing here?” inquired Rose, totally not expecting it to be him. 

Clearing his throat, Tommy shuffled on his feet. He looked down, then up at Rose. “I…I needed to get out and away. It was all too much.” 

Rose was confused by what Tommy was telling her. She motioned for Tommy to come inside, and he obliged. “What do you mean it was all too much? Are you okay?”

Guiding Tommy to the couch, Rose sat down next to him. She was concerned since she had never seen Tommy like this before. It was as if he was lost.

Tommy sighed, “I was at my sister’s house. Everyone was there, my brothers, their wives and kids, Aunt Polly and her husband, his kids. Everyone had someone but me. I was alone. Charlie was there, of course, but it if feels like the bond we once had is dwindling. He doesn’t need me. I watched him play with his cousins and interact with his aunts and uncles and realized that my son is better off without me.”

Rose was shocked at Tommy’s words. She scooted closer to him and placed a supported hand on his knee. “Tommy, no. That is not true. Of course, your son needs you. You are his father. You’re his family.”

“He has other family members who can give him the love and attention he deserves. Maybe I should have listened to Grace’s parents and had Charlie live with them.”

“No. Tommy, listen to me,” Rose began and made Tommy look at her. “Charlie is your son. You love him. You told me that you love him. He is a part of you and Grace. If you give Charlie up, you will regret it. Then you truly will lose him.”

“It would be better for him….”

“No, it would not. It would only scar that child for the rest of his life. He will feel that you abandoned him,” Rose stated firmly. “You’re not thinking clearly. It’s a holiday. We all get weird when we are forced to hang around family members. Just stay here for a while and relax.”

Rose found that her hand moved from Tommy’s knee to his hand sitting back on the couch. He was holding on tight as if he was afraid Rose would disappear. She used her other hand to cover his. Rose wanted Tommy to know that she was not going anywhere. Taking in Tommy’s appearance, he was dressed in blue jeans, a black sweater, and black boots. It was the most casual look Rose had ever seen Tommy. She was always used to seeing him in suits. It was a nice change. However, the look on his face was one of sadness and defeat. 

“Tell me what you need, Tommy?” Rose asked. She pulled Tommy closer to her and wrapped an arm around him. “Tell me how I can make it better,” she crooned in his ear and ran her fingers through his hair. 

What did Tommy want? He was unsure. A part of Tommy didn’t want to feel always in control. That he could let go and be in the moment. That’s what he wanted; he wanted to be in the moment with Rose. Just the two of them, sitting together. “I just want to sit here, with you, Rose. That’s all I want right now. I don’t want to think about anything.”

Southern Oregonians, January is the month of my birthday and National Hot Tea month! This week’s hot tea is about one of the oldest demeaning phrases republished in the Trumper handbook! It’s time we talk about the period in history America had the idea of “sending the problem away” and how there were Black leaders that agreed and those that disagreed. Southern Oregon, let’s talk about that historical passage to Africa and the audacity that some of the key figures had in this little scapegoat endeavor.

Abraham Lincoln is the figure head that Republicans love to boast about as their Party’s centerfold of equality but I gotta say the narrative is getting old! It was in 1858 that “Honest Abe” stated in a debate against Senator Stephen A. Douglas, “I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people.”(Freedman, 2012) The Great Emancipator was just as diet racist as they come but his anti-slavery beliefs were bad for the economy. From 1840 to 1850 The U.S. produced 2 million bales of cotton a year and by the end of August 1860, 5 million bales of cotton was produced where a little more than 1 billion pounds was exported to Great Britain’s factories. There was one man that was fed up with the complacency of abolitionists-John Brown. He was more enraged at the abolitionists that wanted slavery to end peacefully so this true ally was destroying property and disturbing the peace in Virginia to wake people up! The uprising John Brown led in Harpers Ferry ended with him being lynched by the “patriots” of the establishment. Frederick Douglass was a known abolitionist of the time and there was correspondence between him and Brown 2 years  before the insurrection. Douglass opposed the plan to begin with and told him to call off the rebellion. Authorities were anxious to get their hands on Frederick Douglass despite the fact that he had nothing to do with the uprising of Harpers Ferry, so he fled to Canada then England. He came back  in time for the 1860 presidential election where he stated that Lincoln was, “a man of will and nerve, [who] will not back down from his own assertions...”(Freedman, 2012)

This is the part where political beliefs should always ruin a friendship because Fredrick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln had very different viewpoints of anti-slavery. “Lincoln and the Republicans opposed the expansion of slavery but believed that the Constitution protected slavery in the Southern states,”(Freedman, 2012) while Douglass endorsed Radical Abolitionist nominee Gerrit Smith. There are still some Oregonians that say that the “Stars and Bars” are their heritage and I’m wondering if anyone told them about April 12,1861. This was the date that the Civil War started but more specifically, the rebel cannons opened fire on the American flag at Fort Sumter and replaced it with the rebel flag declaring themselves an independent nation. As we have all seen, there are still supporters of the Confederacy among us but they’re never called terrorists or foreign agents. A key player in the African-American Exodus was Bishop Henry M. Turner who was born free in South Carolina and became a preacher before the Civil War. During the era of Reconstruction he held minor positions in office as a Republican but the upward mobility he wanted for the Black race was denied by white-controlled Georgia because the Legislature refused to seat Black people. The Supreme Court ruling in 1883 that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was unconstitutional was what sealed his belief that white people were vehemently opposed to Black equality. At an emigration convention in 1893 he stated that, “‘For God hates the submission of cowardice. But on the other hand to talk about physical resistance is literally madness...The idea of eight or ten million ex slaves contending with sixty million people of the most powerful race under heaven!’ Obviously the only alternative was a mass exodus.”(Fredrickson, 1995) Lincoln held a meeting in 1862 mostly Black clergymen and promoted the idea that Black people should emigrate to Central America and he went on to say that, “Your race are suffering, in my judgement, the greatest wrong inflicted on any people. But even when you cease to be slaves, you are yet far removed from being placed on an equality with the white race...Perhaps it is better for both of us to be separated.”(Freedman, 2012)

Frederick Douglass was correct in calling Abraham Lincoln a  genuine representation of American prejudice because the white mans’ idea of a Black mans’ freedom is lukewarm and the rights of Black women are nonexistent. The handful that raged against the machine of colonialism were not marked heroes of their day but they’re glorified now for doing the bare minimum. The descendants of colonizers are quick to compare a minor inconvenience to slavery but bear no witness to the system that enforces the oppression and continue to profit from it.

Thus, if the government puts a cap on house rents, landlords lose the incentive to maintain their properties or build new ones.

What they don't tell you is that the free market doesn't exist. Every market has some rules and boundaries that restrict freedom of choice. A market looks free only because we so unconditionally accept its underlying restrictions that we fail to see them

A lot of the things that are outside the market today have been removed by political decision, rather than the market process itself – human beings, government jobs, electoral votes, legal decisions, university places or uncertified medicines. There are still attempts to buy at lease of these things illegally (bribing government officials, judges or voters) or legally (using expensive lawyers to win a lawsuit, donations to political parties, etc.), but even though there have been movements in both directions, the trend has been towards less marketization

Simplicity: Bringing your purchases across the border can get very messy, so keeping this landing page clean is essential. There’s no more information here than what you need to know. No legalese either. You’ll have a customs broker worrying about all those small details for you.

Speed: At Unbounce, we have a lot to say about the impact that page speed can have on your conversion rates. But Border Buddy is already ahead of the curve on this one. On mobile, this landing page takes less than three seconds to hit first meaningful paint. Border Buddy avoids weighing down the page with unnecessary media or scripts, ensuring immediate visitor engagement. (Prepping an SVG version of their logo could shave a few kilobytes off of what’s already a very lean page.)

Unexpected vibrancy: Sometimes marketers associate the push for faster speeds with a need to sacrifice the visual appeal of a landing page. This example from Border Buddy shows it that doesn’t have to be the case. They’ve made careful choices in terms of font, layout, and visuals to maximize impact and reinforce branding (without distracting the visitor).

F-pattern: Like the Z-pattern, the F-pattern layout mimics the way our eyes move across the screen when we look at content. It reduces cognitive load and ensures that the key pieces of the message (including the call to action) are located in the places that they’ll most noticeable.

5. Bouquet Bar (Agency: Power Digital Marketing)

Power Digital Marketing created this gorgeous landing page for Bouquet Bar. Though other landing pages target specific holidays, this one says that you don’t need an excuse to treat someone you love (or, y’know, need to impress) to a bouquet. You can do it “Just Because.” Ryan Picardal, the designer who worked on it, describes their goals:

For a fairly new brand, our team realized that we needed to capitalize on not only driving sales from these landing pages, but also expanding their audience. In order to achieve that, we needed to focus on putting enticing messaging and imagery at the forefront, and ensure that all key benefits Bouquet Bar provides are clearly visible and eye-catching.

Industry: Florist/Gifts

Why it works…

Choose your own adventure: While maintaining focus is important, sometimes a single call to action doesn’t quite capture the types of visitors your landing page receives. In these cases, it can be quite effective to provide multiple options. For buyers who want to craft something personal, the first call to action invites you to create your own bouquet. But for those short on time or imagination, “curated selections” provide a shortcut to celebrating an important person or occasion.

Just Because: 75% of roses sold in the US are purchased by men for Valentine’s Day. And 25% of all adults report buying flowers as gifts on Mother’s Day. It’s likely Bouquet Bar does a significant amount of business around these two days, but the “just because” messaging here invites business during the other 363 days of the year.

The right color palette: This point touches on Bouquet Bar’s overall branding, but it’s worth pointing out in the context of the “Just Because” page. Orange, particularly the deep shade they’ve chosen, aligns with the brand’s warm, sophisticated personality. A lot of what gets labeled as the psychology of color is fairly dubious—using pink won’t suddenly make your funeral home appear more cheerful—but the accents here definitely support the identity that Bouquet Bar wants to establish.

Evocative photography: The gallery helps contextualize the product as an “expression of love, gratitude and friendship” by showcasing people receiving the gift. Images of people can be more effective at evoking emotions than words, so a company like Bouquet Bar is wise to employ them here. The photos also, much more practically, show scale. This can be a real concern when purchasing products sight unseen. It’s an excellent lesson for anyone practicing ecommerce.

6. Class Creator

Australia-based Class Creator uses this Unbounce landing page to make inroads in the US market (and, hopefully, help the company secure US partners) when school’s between sessions in their home country. The page showcases many of the product’s features as well as the primary benefits. It targets high-level decision makers who need as much information as possible before they buy.

Industry: Education/SaaS

Why it works..

Breakin’ the rules: I know what you’re going to say. “That’s not a landing page. It’s a homepage. It breaks all the rules. Just look at that navigation bar! Look at all those different links. The Attention Ratio is out of control!” Grumble, grumble, grumble. But there’s a lesson here for anyone looking for landing page inspiration: stay flexible. Tim Bowman, Class Creator’s CEO, told me they’ve found it more success with this homepage than a traditional conversion-focused landing page. I wanted to include it here as an example of just what you can do.

Floating navigation bar: If you must include a navigation bar, it’s best to keep it in view at all times. This also lets Class Creator keep the primary call to action (“Demo School”) at the top of the page so that no scrolling is necessary for their visitors to find it.

The numbers don’t lie: Above the fold Class Creator marshals some pretty serious numbers as a form of social proof. They leverage the 10,000+ educators in 13 countries who’re already using their software as a powerful persuasive device.

Easy access to a product demo: In the SaaS space, it’s remarkably common to see companies throw up too many barriers between potential customers and demoing their product. (“Submit your firstborn for access to our 5-minute free trial.”) Class Creator knows that it’s essential for prospects to get their hands dirty with a demo or trial version of the software. This ensures that they get to evaluate the product in action, generating qualified leads (with a simple email form) and carrying them further down the funnel.

Smart use of lightboxes: This landing page (acting as a homepage) already has a ton to say about Class Creator. Relegating any additional information to lightboxes works to keep it out of the way. It’d certainly be worth their while testing different versions of this page that swap out features for benefits or put the testimonials in a more prevalent place.

7. Good Eggs

The good people at Good Eggs know how to use slick marketing (just look at their rockin’ homepage!). In fact, I think a lot of their landing pages would be a great fit for this post about about landing page design. This particular example, which promotes free coconut water, is no exception, but it also offers a masterclass in restraint. It shows how to use a promo to score conversions without becoming overbearing.

Industry: Grocery Delivery

Why it inspires…

Freebies: Free seems universally good. But in this case, the promise of free is doing more than appealing to our instinctual love of not paying for stuff. It builds good will, provides a sample of a product that Good Egg carries, and quickly establishes a lifestyle match between the service and the visitor. What do I mean by lifestyle match? Well, if you’re thrilled by the getting free coconut water from Harmless Harvest, you already know Good Eggs will be a great fit for you.

Added value: At first, I was taken aback by the headline here because I thought you’d hit harder with the whole free thing (like, I dunno, “Free Coconut Water” could work?). But it’s likely the average Good Eggs customer has more on their mind just getting a deal. Here, the promotion helps show off brand values of wellness, sustainability, and ethical labor practices. So it’s not just free, it’s also a good thing.

Testimonials: It can be a little risky to mention your competitors, but Good Eggs gets around this problem by letting a customer do it for them. Sometimes testimonials can get a little samey, repeating the same point in different voices. (That’s not always a bad thing.) Here, though, they’ve been carefully selected to reinforce the three value propositions listed above.

8. Jet Pet

For every person living in Vancouver, there must be at least six dogs. Jet Pet understands this city’s love of pooches, and they’re big fans of using the Unbounce Builder to advertise their premium dog boarding service and three locations to locals. We’ve included it here because this landing page is an inspiration for anyone targeting a select geographic area.

Industry: Pet Care/Boarding

Why it works…

Clear value statement: A simple heading (“Dog Boarding Vancouver”) lets the searcher know they’ve hit the jackpot. For paid campaigns, Jet Pet can also use Unbounce’s Dynamic Keyword Replacement (DTR) to swap in a search keyword (“Dog Kennels Vancouver”) for improved message match. Then, when a prospect clicks on an ad in Google, they’re brought to a page with a headline that matches their expectations.

Two-stage form: Typically, using multi-step forms can lead to higher conversion rates than a single long form. Here, a two-stage form reduces psychological friction in two ways. First, it minimizes the perceived effort in signing up for the service. (And even if the second form proves frustrating, someone who’s already filled out the first form is invested and more likely to continue onward. Sunk cost fallacy FTW.) Second, a two-stage form can delay asking for more “sensitive” questions until later.

Friendliness: Speaking of the form, I love that the first thing they ask you (and the only required field on the first page) is your dog’s name. I’d expect this question if I walked into one of their locations with my pup on a leash, but seeing the same question here made me smile. Jet Pet’s page is full of friendly gestures like this one that make them memorable.

Trust building: Trusting somebody else with your dog requires significant peace of mind. So it’s important that Jet Pet uses copy that builds that trust and leaves their customers feeling secure that they’ve left Fido with ”loving experts” who have his best interest in mind. The reassuring language that Jet Pet uses across the page reinforces this message, including emotionally loaded terms like “care,” “safe,” and “love.”

Video testimonials: You don’t always need a video to have an effective testimonial, but in Jet Pet’s case, I think this is a smart move. There’s a lot of questionable testimony out there, so showing actual dog owners speaking to the camera helps build further credibility. (I’d love to see the dogs in these videos too.)

9. Mooala (Agency: BuzzShift)

So it turns out you can milk a banana. Who knew? (Mooala Organic, that’s who.) Created by BuzzShift, the landing page reflects the brand’s playfulness and sense of fun embodied by their mascot. It’s also straightforward in a way that inspires a lot of confidence in their product. Cameron Gawley, BuzzShift’s co-founder and CEO, puts the choices here in a whole-funnel context:

This specific page worked well in the consideration phase of our social ads. Our goal was to add value via a coupon, by capturing an email as a soft conversion and then nurture them forward in the rest of the journey. Most brands have a huge opportunity to grow lower their CPA and increase conversions by focusing more on awareness and consideration.

Industry: Beverages/Dairy Alternatives

Why it inspires…

From landing page to offline purchase: As Gawley points out, the promise of a coupon does double duty as a soft conversion. It builds an email nurture track and encourages an in-store purchase. Since tasting is believing, this is a crucial component of Mooala’s digital marketing strategy.

Meeting objections head-on: Banana haters gonna banana hate. But Mooala should be commended for immediately kicking one possible objection to the curb: “What is Bananamilk, you ask? It’s not a sugary-sweet banana smoothie, as you might think.” By boldly tackling this concern, the copy helps reset expectations and promote the product as “a light, dairy alternative that you can enjoy guilt-free.”

A smartly placed animation: Videos and animations can be extraordinarily useful, but they can also serve as a distraction if not positioned correctly. I love the inclusion of animation at the bottom of the page, where it’ll draw the eye toward the CTA instead of distracting from Mooala’s primary messaging.

Social queues: Encouraging visitors to follow the brand’s social media accounts increases the opportunities to be delightful and stay top of mind.

10. Pared

We’re happy to show off this slick landing page from Pared, an app that matches (or, ahem, pairs) restaurants to pre-qualified kitchen staff. Like the example from Class Creator, Pared doesn’t need a complicated website to get their message out there. Unbounce’s drag-and-drop builder gives them the ability to make changes and track conversions. According to Dave Lu, Pared’s president and co-founder, it’s been effective, even three years later:

From day one, I was able to quickly pull together a website and landing page for my startup. Because of Unbounce, I can iterate and A/B test changes without needing to involve a designer or developer. This is tremendously liberating and powerful for any marketer.

Industry: Restaurants/Staffing

Why it inspires…

Speaks to its niche: Pared isn’t a service for everyone and they know it. Instead, they have a specific clientele whose needs they match in a big way. This landing page starts with one particular problem these people encounter: “Never be short-staffed again,” and goes from there. (They use other web assets for recruiting Pared Pros.)

Explainer video: The landing page includes a short explainer that runs viewers through the problem and their solution to it in simple, approachable language. App landing pages, in particular, benefit from these types of videos.

Big names and logos: The page includes logos from a wide variety of recognizable eateries and restaurants who use the service. It also includes killer testimonials from chef-owners at San Francisco institutions like Little Gem, Octavia, and Jaridiniere (now sadly gone).

11. Twinwoods Adventure (Agency: Bluespark Digital)

You need to see the real page for the full effect. This landing page for Twinwoods Adventure captures the thrill of indoor skydiving through a captivating (and humorous) hero animation and tons of incredible action shots. Bluespark Digital created a page that buzzes with energy and excitement while staying focused on the conversion.

Industry: Adventure

Why it inspires…

Capturing the experience: Twinwoods Adventure sell an experience, so social proof is critical in carrying visitors over the golden line from curiosity to conversion. (You can return a lousy product, after all, but bad experiences will be with you for life.) The page hits you with the double whammy of testimonials and review scores from Google, Facebook, and TripAdvisor.

Hype video: Some concepts demand video. Indoor skydiving is one of them. The mid-page video here does an incredible job of creating hype for the experience by showing off a range of skill levels. If you thought the wind tunnel was nothing but an oversized hairdryer, boy, you were wrong.

Keep the number handy: Like many of the pages we’ve featured, the design encourages scrolling downwards (clicking the arrow below the CTA carries you to the benefits). But Twinwoods likely do a lot of booking over the phone, so a floating phone number keeps that particular call-to-action visible no matter where people end up on the page.

Additional info: Before you get me into a jumpsuit, I’ve got more questions. (Like, where’d you guys get the wind tunnel anyway?) That’s why it’s a relief to find the info I need tucked away on the page. Arguably, these sections could be a little more evident as buttons, but Twinwoods Adventure smartly includes this additional info without stretching the page.

12. Wavehuggers (Agency: Everett Andrew Marketing)

Created by Everett Andrew Marketing, this brilliant landing page connects safety and fun together through carefully selected visuals and clear, concise messaging. According to Mark Chapman, Founder and President of Everett Andrew, this design was all about standing out:

Our goal in creating the page was to cut through the clutter and crowded market of businesses here in southern California offering surf lessons—both on Google and Facebook. Getting each important conversion component (i.e. social proof, urgency, hero shot, CTA, etc.) into the page, mostly above the fold, was tricky but in the end we found a way to segment these out so each part catches the eye.

Industry: Surf Lessons

Why it inspires…

Yelp score: Even the crummiest of products or services can gather together a few positive testimonials. (“The CEO’s mom thinks we’re cool.”) That’s why high scores from Yelp, TripAdvisor, Amazon, or Google can complement testimonials, as they do here. It’s much more challenging to maintain strong scores on these sites. (Just remember that visitors can always verify your score for themselves.)

Timed special offer: Like many of the examples here, Wavehuggers add urgency to the landing page with a limited time promotion. It may not seem like much—this kind of thing is almost a marketing cliche at this point—but even small tweaks like adding “for a limited time only” to a promo code can affect your conversion rates.

Safety, comfort, fun: Prospects are likely seeking out lessons to feel more comfortable on the water. Everything on this landing page focuses on the promise of a positive experience. The copy on this landing page reassures them throughout that surfing is “not as scary as you might think.”

Real customers: The photographs here don’t have the polish of some of the others on this list (see Western Rise below), but guess what? They shouldn’t. A stunning stock photograph of a professional surfer hanging ten would be far less effective than these visuals of kids having fun on their boards. From the cursive fonts to the hand-drawn arrows, Wavehuggers’ style reflects the relaxed vibes of surfer culture.

13. Western Rise

Sometimes when prepping a piece like this one, you end up buying the product. I’m very, very close to pulling the trigger on a pair of Western Rise’s AT Slim Rivet Pants. And why not? This sharp landing page quickly establishes the appeal of the product through visuals and copy that stresses the benefits of these “elevated” pants. It may be time to give up on my ratty jeans altogether.

Industry: Clothier

Why it works…

Bold visuals: These pants may be handmade in Los Angeles, but many of the photos here (including the hero shot) scream Brooklyn. It’s easy to imagine wearing the AT Slim Rivet Pants as you peddle your fixie through traffic, balancing a latte on your handlebars on the way to a chic rooftop cocktail party.

Stressing the benefits: I never thought I’d be writing about the common pain points associated with wearing pants, but here we are. On this landing page, Western Rise addresses them all. Jeans are prone to tearing and tend to overheat. Chinos get dirty and wrinkled. Dress pants are for squares, man. By promising versatility (“pants for all day, every day”) and keeping the benefits up front, Western Rise offers a solution to a problem you didn’t know you had.

“Tech specs”: Though there’s some clever copy on display here, Western Rise is extremely straightforward about the features of the AT Slim Rivet Pants in the “Tech specs” section on the page. They provide precise details about materials (“Durable Nylon Canvas” and “Gusseted Crotch”) and design (“Media Pocket” and “Extendable Hem”) in a clear, concise way.

ABT: Always Be Testing

There you have it. These are some of the best landing page examples I’ve come across here at Unbounce, selected to represent a wide swath of industries with many different conversion goals. I hope you’ve found some qualities to inspire you.

But I have one final piece of advice for you: no page is ever perfect—or, more to the point, every page can be better. And what works for one page (with one target market) won’t necessarily work for you. With this in mind, you should always be testing your landing pages.
