Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich testing a speedboat
Misha is testing a speedboat during a vacation with his sister Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, his brother-in-law, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich and their children. Although speedboats had been around since around 1888 (for commercial purposes such as towing and so on) the first "runabouts" (those gorgeous small, fast, little motor boats created for when "princes" such as Misha "felt the need for speed" ) were not introduced until 1909. This photo was taken about 1910. Pretty early in the "speedboat" game!
The Photographs are from the Herbert Galloway Stewart Collection. Herbert Galloway was a Amateur British photographer born 1866; He was employed by the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna as a tutor for her son, Prince Andrei and assembled a collection of snapshots taken between 1908 and the Russian Revolution.

From @1843mag: This photograph of Tsar Nicholas II and his family was taken from one of the 22 photo albums compiled by Herbert Galloway Stewart, a British tutor employed by the tsar’s sister. Between 1908 and 1918, Stewart photographed the extended Romanov family at home in St Petersburg and on their Crimean holidays. In contrast with official photographs, which depict the Romanovs as stiff and inaccessible in their luxurious finery, these casual snaps give viewers insight into their relaxed family life. The albums were only recently rediscovered in the archives at the Science Museum in London. They now feature in a new exhibition about the Romanovs' links with medicine and science – both in life and in death. To discover how science dispelled myths about Russia’s tragic imperial family, click on 1843’s handle and follow the link in their bio.
