The Mikhailovichi- Romanovs during the Great War

The Institute of Noble Maidens was a finishing school for girls of higher up families in late Imperial Russia and the most famous of these institutes being the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens. Others include: Catherine Institute, Saratov, Kharkov, Irkutsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, Moscow School of the Order of Saint Catherine, Kiev Institute, and Rodionovsky Institute for Noble Girls. I’m unsure what institute these girls belonged to.

Portrait of HH Princess Irina Alexandrovna of Russia, of the Mikhailovichi branch of Romanovs painted by Alexander Mikhailovich Leontovsky in 1911. Leontovsky {1865-1928} painted several portraits of the Russian Imperial Family, including Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mavrikievna and a mysterious “YOUNG LADY AT TSARSKOE SELO” in 1903/04. Although the image is a little blurred, this is the first time I’ve seen a clear version of the portrait that has been previously captured in the background of several photos. 

The portrait will also be amount the items being auctioned by Coutau-Begarie next month.
