Architecture shapes daily life. Haptic design creates experiences that move the soul and navigate the seasons of living, offering moments of self-awareness amidst contrasting environments. Can sensorial architecture redefine our spatial experiences? Yes.
Consider tectonics! Materiality plays a crucial role in manipulating acoustics, scent, tactile sensations, and visual elements in a project. Here's a fun question: Can you taste the architecture? Let's examine a working project to refine our understanding of impacting sensorial aspects through tectonics: Restart where four identically shaped rooms offer diverse experiences. Hemp fibers in a wood frame regulate the internal climate by interacting with moisture, efficiently balancing temperature through the physical process of heat absorption to turn water droplets into moisture. By releasing energy/ heat vapour can become droplets once more. This heat can be used to warm up the internal space or cool it down. Additionally, scent binds to moisture and can thus be controlled by varying wall thicknesses- and thus the thickness of the hempfibers. Since a finish has to be vapour open with this system, Lime plasters are strategically employed to additionally capture light in a specific way and influence luminosity. Lastly in this project the roof slopes are calculated to control acoustics and guide movement throughout the space.
In conclusion, despite identical forms, these linked spaces offer varied experiences based on usage, time of day, and seasonal changes. A space can be warm enough to take a shower in winter but cool enough in the midst of summer to not even shed a drop of sweat. They accommodate diverse activities and engage users in shared experiences such as smelling if someone had a shower or when dinner is almost ready (and whats for dinner). Whether this is a wanted attribute is of personal taste ofcourse.
This approach also fosters inclusivity, benefiting those with sensory impairments. By manipulating texture, smells and sound, individuals can navigate spaces more effectively. After all a project's success is measured by the experiences of ALL users. More on universal design coming up.
To end with a question for you: How can sensorial architecture further revolutionize the way we experience and interact with our built environment? Comment below!
Can you taste the architecture?

HEMP IS NOT A DRUG, BUT A HIGHLY VERSATILE PLANT
youtube
Hemp fibers are known for their exceptional strength and durability, making them an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. Historically, hemp has been used to produce textiles, ropes, canvases, and paper. The fibers are derived from the stalk of the hemp plant, which is a variety of the Cannabis sativa species. These fibers are not only robust but also lightweight and resistant to mildew, providing a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials. Hemp textiles are breathable, absorbent, and possess natural anti-bacterial properties, making them perfect for clothing and household items. In the production of rope and canvas, hemp's resilience and ability to withstand harsh conditions make it highly valuable. Furthermore, hemp paper is a more eco-friendly option compared to traditional wood pulp paper, as it requires fewer chemicals and less water to produce. The cultivation of hemp is also beneficial for the environment, as it grows quickly, requires minimal pesticides, and improves soil health through phytoremediation. Overall, the versatility and ecological advantages of hemp fibers position them as a key resource in the push towards more sustainable manufacturing practices.

This is a save the planet plant.. it should be legalized everywhere.. it will change the outcome of the planet.. Credit: 📸 article Had an awesome talk at guild the other day by Claire from the @contemporaryhempery and took home some of last year's crop to play with. It was very very coarse, but I managed to get a few samples. The top two are the line singles of a thickness that could be used for weaving, I started off spinning Z, but it fought me all the way, so the second one is spun S. Perhaps this is where the 'bast fibres must be spun S' common wisdom comes from, as I've experimented with flax and found it doesn't matter at all, but with this it did seem to make a difference. Or maybe it's just more noticeable as the fibres were so much coarser. The bottom skein is the tow blended 50/50 with wool and 2 plied for the sort of yarn that would be used for knitting. I wish I knew more about hemp to be able to advise how to improve the quality; if this were flax I'd say plant closer together, harvest earlier, and perhaps ret for slightly longer, but with hemp I have no clue, and from the pictures this was certainly planted incredibly densely. Even though this doesn't make the nicest yarn yet (but it will improve with wet finishing), I'm really happy to be able to be involved with such a cool local project. I have a little more of the line, and considerably more of the tow, so I've got plenty of opportunity to try and do all I can to get a nicer softer smoother yarn, I just need to think about what to try. I know I'm going to make some simple hand-twisted cordage from the tow, but I'm not sure what else yet. #spinning #spinnersofinstagram #hemp #hempfiber #hempfibre (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpJ0ToesiQ-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What is Hemp Fiber? Hemp is a plant from which bast fibers can be extracted from the stems of the plants. Hemp is the oldest cultivated textile grown throughout Europe until cotton became a major textile fiber. Now, China is the major producer of hemp, which comes from the cannabis plant and grows easily in many climates because it does not require fertilizers and it’s resistant to weeds and…

Marijuana is a term used to classify the variety of Cannabis Sativa that has been bred specifically for its medical benefits or psychoactive effects that contain more than 0.3% THC. Hemp is Cannabis Sativa plant strains which contain very low levels of THC (0.3% or below) and it typically used for its fiber and seeds. Many believe that Hemp was the first crop ever cultivated by mankind thanks to evidence of its use recorded throughout history and discoveries of material made from Hemp from over 10,000 years ago! 🌱

Meet Harry the hemp farmer! Every so often I share some of my work here. Really proud of the teamwork on this project. : Background: the hemp industry, and all emerging markets, has problems accessing financing for deals and operations. Traditional commercial banks don't lend to these industries because their actuarial models don't have enough data since the formalized industries are so new. This is a problem if you're in the hemp industry and need a loan! : That's where @qualitybancorp comes in. We make capital available that's simply not available elsewhere in the marketplace (and provide a lot of other services too!). : Check us out, like, share, save, etc! . . . @qualitybancorp @paigemackenziek @the.hairchemist @kaufferz @charlie_cipriani #hempfinance #hempfinancing #hemp #hempindustry #hempcommunity #hempnews #hempbiomass #hempflower #hempfiber #hempseeds #hempfarmer #hempfarm #hempfarming #hempoil #hempfarmers #hempbusiness #hempcrete #hempprocessing #hempproducts #hempheals #hemphelps #hemphelpspeople #qbc #qualitybancorp (at Denver, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI3YHImMl6Q/?igshid=7qkirpr6fkqc

Hempcrete is a composite made from fibers of the industrial hemp plant mixed with lime. But what can you use this for? Well, to build a home of course! It is about an eighth of the weight of conventional concrete and is also an efficient insulator, reducing energy cost up to 50-70% annually! Did we mention hempcrete is healthy, sustainable and affordable too? 🌱 🏚️

Repost from @dwellmagazine The northeast of England may be better known for Cambridge University, or some of the country’s oldest archaeological digs dating back to the Bronze Age. But the Cambridgeshire area also has a history of hemp production, which was used for centuries to make everything from rope to fabric, paper, and ship sails. In this environmentally friendly farmhouse on Margent Farm, London-based @practicearchitectureuk drew upon that heritage by incorporating hemp into the exterior cladding. The corrugated panels are made of nonwoven hemp fiber blended with a resin made from the farm’s biowaste—like corn cobs, oat hulls, and leftover sugarcane fiber. Underneath these panels lies a layer of hemp-based insulation, which is left exposed for a warm, textured feel. The radically low embodied carbon house stands as a prototype to explore how hemp can be used to create prefabricated, sustainable materials that might be applied to large-scale buildings and homes. See the farmhouse made of hemp—and how a region steeped in history is looking towards the future—at the link in bio. – Photos by @oskar.proctor #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #interiordesign #hemp #hempproducts #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #hempfiber #prefab #prefabdesign #prefabarchitecture #cambridgeshire https://www.instagram.com/p/CBtnw2SFnbw/?igshid=wwa4hvnsls2a
