A Phoenix Aurora over Iceland Image Credit & Copyright: Hallgrimur P. Helgason; Rollover Annotation: Judy Schmidt
Explanation: All of the other aurora watchers had gone home. By 3:30 am in Iceland, on a quiet September night, much of that night's auroras had died down. Suddenly, unexpectedly, a new burst of particles streamed down from space, lighting up the Earth's atmosphere once again. This time, surprisingly, pareidoliacally, the night lit up with an amazing shape reminiscent of a giant phoenix. With camera equipment at the ready, two quick sky images were taken, followed immediately by a third of the land. The mountain in the background is Helgafell, while the small foreground river is called Kaldá, both located about 30 kilometers north of Iceland's capital Reykjavík. Seasoned skywatchers will note that just above the mountain, toward the left, is the constellation of Orion, while the Pleiades star cluster is also visible just above the frame center. The 2016 aurora, which lasted only a minute and was soon gone forever -- would possibly be dismissed as a fanciful fable -- were it not captured in the featured, digitally-composed, image mosaic.

As attested in the Landnámabók - The Book of Settlements, the Helgafell mountain (Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland) was declared a holy site of Thórr by the very first man to settle in the area. Thórólfr Mostrarskegg, whose biography is detailed in the Eyrbyggja saga, had a shrine built to his God on the site. According to the Laxdæla saga, the hero Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir was buried at the foot of the Helgafell mountain.
Folk tradition has it if one climbs the mountain without saying a word or looking back once, one will be granted three wishes.
“You can make three wishes at the top of the mountain if you follow these exact rules:
First, find the grave of Guðrún. It is north of the church and the cemetery.
Make sure that your mind is free of bad thoughts.
Make a cross over Guðrún´s grave with your right hand.
It is important that you climb the mountain with good thoughts.
Make sure that you are not dirty and that you have washed your face.
Do not talk at all on the way to the wishing place.
Do not look to the right or to the left – just look straight ahead.
Go into the small enclosure (maybe this was once a chapel of the monastery and they prayed from here. A part of the wall has been dated at 1184).
Face to the east. (The town of Stykkishólmur can be seen to the north).
When you make your wishes, they must be only for the good.
Make three wishes.”

Hi there! How are you?
I'm so sorry to be bothering you with this, but I just really, really need to know what happens in Vetrnaetr. Do you plan on writing more? If not, would you just tell us how the story ends? Do things between Hiccup and Astrid get better? Do they forgive eachother and try to get the relationship right?
Your story is just too good, makes me wonder about it all the time. Thank you for writing such wonderful stories ❤️
Hey friend!
You are not bothering me! I do plan on finishing it, but writing anything at all is a bit difficult for me to manage right now--a multichapter longfic is peak difficulty. I haven't worked on the next chapter in ages (all I recall is it starts with Astrid regretting the letter she wrote and stressing over whether she just killed her relationship), so I would have to find the time to re-read what I've published of Vetrnaetr so far, for the sake of continuity, before I could get back into chipping away at it. My personal life is not allowing for such a blessing of free time at the moment. I can't even give you an estimate of when that will get better. Nothing bad is going on; quite the contrary, my cup runneth over.
Additionally, my creative focus is changing. While I wouldn't say I've completely lost interest in Hiccstrid or HTTYD, I've found myself gravitating more and more towards original work that I haven't posted here, simply because there's not really a want for it. I don't think anyone really cares that much about my worldbuilding and novel plotting that will probably never result in anything anyway but it's nice to have dreams.
I won't give you all the nitty gritty details below the cut, because I might actually finish Vetrnaetr one day, but I will provide some vague and general spoilers below in case that never happens. For your peace of mind friend.
Spoilers:
Hiccup returns from Helgafell but since the Vetrnaetr festival is kicking off, he and Astrid do not have much of an opportunity to talk and reconcile; Astrid can tell Hiccup is distant and she is afraid that their breakup is inevitable. She also laments all the implications of a breakup after everything they've been through privately and publicly.
Stefnir takes more opportunities to be a smug asshole, because of course he does.
Hiccup struggles with expectations of change and personal growth from both his father and Astrid; reflects on what that growth and change looks like and what it would mean for him, personally.
Festival is a blast. Astrid realizes she's been a bit of a demanding asshole toward Hiccup and should have been more understanding and tactful in her approach instead of giving him ultimatums to become someone he fundamentally isn't. Damn Ruffnut was right. Astrid gets drunk.
Hiccup realizes he does have a lot of growth left, and not just for others' sake, but his own too. He realizes Astrid had some valid points and if staying in a perpetual adolescent mindset means he loses her, then he doesn't want it. He understands, unintentionally, he has been a bit self-absorbed and selfish.
Hiccup confides this to Gobber who gives some sage advice about growing up in all facets of life, but no more than is absolutely necessary to preserve joy.
First night of festival winds down in the wee hours of the morning. Astrid is passed out now. Hiccup and Toothless get her home. Shenanigans occur because, in a village of drunk Vikings, of course they do.
Astrid wakes up hungover with no recollection of how she got home in bed, but notices whoever got her home took great care to make sure she was comfortable.
Hiccup comes to check on her. They finally get to talk after some self-reflection the night before. They both admit their wrongs and acknowledges where the other person was right, but also refine their personal boundaries and expectation. Yay for healthy reconciliation and open and honest communication. Commitment to one another renewed.
Fic ends with emotional and very physical expressions of love.

Traffic started on new container line between the Port of Gothenburg and Iceland
This morning, the shipping company Samskip’s vessel Helgafell set sail from APM Terminal’s short-sea terminal in the Port of Gothenburg for the first time. From now on the traffic will call at the terminal every week and then sail on to Faroese Runavik and Reykjavik in Iceland, arriving in Rotterdam four days later. “The new call is not only a lifeline between Iceland and Sweden, but also…

@cryptcreechur My reply was too long to post in comments.
Definition of localisation: "the process of making something local in character or restricting it to a particular place."
So, to give some examples. I live by the North Sea, on the Yorkshire Coast. Buried in the depths of the North Sea is a region called Doggerland, which I associate with the dead. Because my town faces east, where the sun rises, I see Sól as being associated with the dead because it looks like the sun is rising out of the sea.
Someone I know in a few Discord servers has localised their practice to Texas, and they post about it on their blog: https://sidublaecfeld.wordpress.com/
Another example I've seen recently is someone has adapted the prayer from Sigdrifumal to fit their local area. The template they sent is:
Hail the household wights, hail [local landmark], hail [kenning for local landmark]. I look upon you with loving eyes for all the gifts you have given me.
Hail golden Calafia, hail mist-veiled Pacifica, hail the Disir and all the gods. Give to me healing hands and wise words, life long.
I venerate the Matres Eboriciae, literally the Mothers of Yorkshire. To as whether they exist or not is a different matter, but they're essentially wights/spirits/deities I've chosen to venerate that are linked directly to my local area.
I'd also say that Helgafell in Iceland is a prime example of localisation, as that was seen as an afterlife location according to two sagas but was obviously only a relevant afterlife destination to people in Iceland
I wish localisation was discussed and practiced more in Heathenry.

Helgafell (73 meters) just south of Stykkisholmur, Iceland, is rich in folklore. The locals believe that on your first visit if you climb up without looking back or speaking and face east from the top you will be granted three secret wishes.

Vestmannaeyjarbær on the island of Heimaey. The harbour is the main port/town and heart of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands. This is a hand-held 8 shot stitched pano from the hugely underrated Fujinon XF18mm f/2. The lookout point is only halfway up Heimaklettur (279m) and it was far enough :-) View is looking SW - pretty much along the line of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. Major points of interest: at left - Eldfell (205m) responsible for nearly wiping out the town in 1973 and Helgafell in the background. The rumpled terrain at the left of the picture is the lava from Eldfell circa 1973 and what is really cool (sic) about this is the locals staved off the lava with cold water pumped out of the harbour. Lost a large part of the village but saved the town and made a better harbour. The cliff/hill/crag at right is Stóraklif but of major interest to vulcanologists is Surtsey - the small island volcano on the horizon just to the left of Stóraklif. The entire landscape is of volcanic origin and only 11-12,000 years old. Fuji XT2, XF18/2, 1/250th sec, f/10, ISO 200 - 8 shot stitch pano - handheld which is why it's a bit bendy. Not art as such - sometimes simple documentary is necessary :-) A big 'Thank You' to you all who view, fave and comment on my work. A very special 'Thank You' to the proud peoples of Iceland.https://flic.kr/p/EZWUwh
