An Interview with Emerging Korean Superstar, IMLAY
I listened to IMLAY;s new EP, Shurai and thought it was FIRE. IMLAY is a producer from Seoul, South Korea – I was intrigued by his background and East Asian inspired electronic music. IMLAY is a leader in Korea’s developing electronic dance scene. He’s best known for combining elements of future bass and pop with eastern scales. He burst onto the scene in 2015, with a killer performance at Heineken 5TARDIUM. This lead him to an opportunity to play at Ultra Japan and SM Spectrum Music Festival. Since then he’s been around the media circuit, obtaining critical acclaim from publications such as NEST HQ, Dancing Astronaut, and Earmilk.
He’s produced for massive K-pop stars like  BoA, Beenzino, and Jonghyun.  He’s been nominated at the Korean Music Awards for Best Electronic Album and has been toted as one of Korea’s best new artists by many.
He recently released his new EP, Shurai, below. I also had the pleasure of interviewing the up-and-coming artists below. You know the drill, press play on the Soundcloud embed and read the interview below to get the FULL IMLAY experience
INTERVIEW:
Where does the name IMLAY come from?
To be honest, it was a bit random. I choose “IMLAY” for my soundcloud account because it includes my last name “Im”
Where are you from and how has that shaped the musician you are today?
I’m from Seoul, South Korea. I am proud of my heritage and try to incorporate I use East Asian scales into my compositions and productions.
What instruments did you play when you were younger?
When I was 7 years-old, I started off on the piano, playing classical music, but I was not too inspired. Although I continued learning the piano throughout my life, I didn’t find my true calling until I turned 14, when I delved into Hiphop and Jazz. From there on, I really got interested in making my own beats and being creative.
Tell us the story of how you started creating music on your computer?
As mentioned, when I turned 14, I became a big fan of Korean Hip-Hop. I wanted to make my own beats, so I downloaded FL Studio! At first, I was not good at working with MIDI, so I started off using samples and mashing up sounds. Then, when I became 16, I listened to Skrillex and Madeon. I thought their productions were out of this world. I was curious how they created their sound, so I study electronic music by watching Youtube.
What was your favorite studio moment when producing your newest EP, SHURAI?
When I was working Rule the Fire, my initial demo track did not really feel quite right with the overall concept and sound of the SHURAI EP. I was struggling for a bit, but just for fun, I took the song 3 pitches down. And BOOM, it clicked! It was a big “win” moment for me.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
Beyond my own production, I produce for other kpop artists! Outside of music, I enjoy hiking and traveling to stay inspired.
Who are your musical influences?
When I was young, Madeon and Skrillex were my heros. Nowadays, I’m heavily influenced by Flume’s productions.
What is your biggest accomplishment to date?
Last year I just released my first 3 track EP named Origin. The end of the year, It was nominated at the Korean Music Awards (South Korea’s version of the Grammys) for Best Electronic Record of the year. I was truly humbled and honored to be nominated.
If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
I want to go Canada to see the Aurora. It’s my dream.
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I like Soundcloud and Instagram. Soundcloud is like my old friend and a foundation of my musical life. Recently, I have been experimenting a lot with Instagram. I like to show my work and daily life through a photo or short-form video.
What is next for IMLAY?
I would like to continue developing my own style! My new label ScreaM Records, SM Entertainment’s new EDM label, is really helping me find me path and supporting my dreams. I’ve been doing quite a few shows in Korea and also did Ultra Japan last year. I hope to expand my international touring and share my music with everyone.
