Today, Apple and MLB announced the July schedule for “Friday Night Baseball,” a weekly doubleheader on Fridays during the 2024 regular season for Apple TV+ users. No local broadcast limitations let fans in 60 countries and regions to watch two highly awaited bouts over 26 weeks.

On “Friday Night Baseball,” play-by-play man Wayne Randazzo, analyst Dontrelle Willis, sideline reporter Heidi Watney, Alex Faust, Ryan Spilborghs, and Tricia Whitaker are talented announcers. Former MLB umpires Ted Barrett, Brian Gorman, and Dale Scott examine rules and calls monthly. Game announcers work weekly. Game announcers get weekly duties.

Together with baseball journalist Russell Dorsey and former MLB player and analyst Xavier Scruggs, Lauren Gardner offers live pre- and postgame coverage. The Rangers vs. Blue Jays and Dodgers vs. Astros pregame shows on July 26 will be shown live from Minute Maid Park in Houston and will include exclusive player interviews among other things.

With an unmatched viewing experience, “Friday Night Baseball” is produced by the Emmy Award-winning production team of MLB Network in collaboration with Apple’s live sports production team. Modern cameras provide realistic live-action images in every game, and spatial audio is enabled for immersive 5.1 surround sound.

Friday Night Baseball Apple TV

Every weeknight, baseball fans in the United States may enjoy the MLB Big Inning whip-around show, which includes live look-ins and in-game highlights. Additionally, Apple TV+ offers a comprehensive lineup of MLB-related programming, such as Countdown to First Pitch, MLB Daily Recap, and MLB This Week. Additionally, fans may watch additional MLB programming for free on the Apple TV app. This programming includes classic games, highlights and interviews, condensed game recaps after each week’s live “Friday Night Baseball” broadcasts, and more.

This season, “Friday Night Baseball” will only be available to commercial venues in the United States on DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS. Update Adds Full Voice Acting to Hit WLW Video Game ‘Heart of the Woods’

On July 12, Yuri game development studio Élan released a free update for its 2019 Yuri visual novel Heart of the Woods that added full English voice acting to the game. The game is published on PC, Mac, and Linux by Sekai Project. Sekai Games has announced a Nintendo Switch Port later this year.

Heart of the Woods follows paranormal vloggers Maddie and Tara as they journey to a remote village in the middle of the woods. They have low expectations but soon find themselves thrust into the mysterious and magical woods where they encounter a centuries-old curse, mystical creatures, and an extremely gay ghost. The game contains optional adult content available via an external patch.

Voice acting and  a Switch port for the game were funded in a Kickstarter campaign last October.

Restaurant Labor Shortages Show Little Sign of Going Economywide

"The argument that last week’s report demands a rethink of today’s policy orientation rests on claims that it contained clear evidence of damaging labor shortages induced by either too-extensive stimulus or too-generous unemployment insurance (UI). There is not compelling evidence of either of these. In fact, nothing in last week’s jobs report calls for a wholesale change of policy course from the federal government. The key takeaways from the data are:"

"Labor shortages—which we would define by a large acceleration of wage growth to a rate that would be hard to sustain over the next year—do seem to have popped up in the leisure and hospitality sector. But unless this dynamic threatens to spill over into other sectors or reduce growth within the leisure and hospitality sector enough to change aggregate trends."

"There is very little reason to worry that labor shortages in leisure and hospitality will soon spill over into other sectors and drive economywide 'overheating.' The leisure and hospitality labor market is highly segmented off from other sectors, and wage pressures—upward or downward—have typically not spilled over from it to other sectors."

"The labor shortages in leisure and hospitality so far do not seem to be dragging sharply on growth even within this sector—the sub-sectors within leisure and hospitality saw by far the most rapid employment growth in the last month."

"Any signs that the more generous UI benefits included as part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) are driving wages higher in this sector are very faint—far too faint to justify a scaling back of these benefits or to justify state-level policymakers depriving their own workers of a needed boost to the safety net."

Heidi Baker’s Testimony: The Transforming Power of the Anointing

Heidi Baker was in burnout mode.

At the time, she considered working at K-mart and leaving her call to ministry. I witnessed her life being radically transformed. I remember when she came from Mozambique to our church in Toronto; she was so exhausted. “I was burned out. Even though I had a doctorate in systematic theology, I did not want to teach theology,” she said in a CBN news interview. “I literally wanted to work at K-mart. I was so tired.”

Now, Heidi and her husband Roland lead IRIS Global, a ministry that began several thousand churches: “Jesus took the ‘no’ from me—the eyes, the burning eyes of Jesus. Now, I have been to 109 nations, preaching this glorious Gospel,” Heidi says.

When she first came to our church, she was spiritually drained and physically ill with double pneumonia. The first thing that happened was that she was completely healed; right after the healing she had a vision. Then, “I saw Jesus—burning eyes of a burning love. God came to me.”

Heidi ran to the altar, raised her hands, and started shouting, “Yes!” And the fire of God hit her. There was no altar call.

Randy Clark, who did not know her, said, “God wants to know if you want the nation of Mozambique.”

Heidi shouted, “Yes!” Then the fire hit her, the power hit her. She started vibrating with power and shouted, “God, I am going to die!”

God said, “Well, I want you to die. You see, you have to die to yourself to live indeed, so you can really take the glory of God.”

What happened to her? What can the anointing do? As we mentioned, it has a wonderful debilitating effect. He caused Heidi to literally fall apart like a fabric doll for a whole week. And yet it wasn’t the craziest thing He did to her. Right after that, for seven days and seven nights God left her disabled. She had to be carried around by her husband. People had to bring her in and out of her hotel in Toronto on a suitcase cart. She says, “Then, they had to take me to the restroom. That was the most humiliating time of all my life.”

Why would God do such a thing? Heidi said she needed to learn to love and to depend not only on Jesus but also on His people. God told her, “You can do nothing without the Body of Christ.” And He caused her to be so handicapped that for seven days and seven nights she had to learn that she did not need Jesus only, she also needed His Body.

Since then, Heidi Baker’s ministry has been expanding extraordinarily. Today, her organization includes well-drilling, free-of-charge health clinics for the poor, feeding programs, primary and secondary schools, and home industries. Now, more than 10,000 churches have been planted in Mozambique, and thousands of churches in more than twenty nations.

How is it that such a great and extraordinary work could be built by the ministry of this little woman and her husband? How can such an impacting and successful work be built among the people of Mozambique after innumerable attempts with no success in the mission field? No doubt the driving force of this great work is the power of the Holy Spirit and His transforming anointing.

Why Should You Desire the Double Portion of the Spirit?

The testimony of Heidi Baker illustrates how the anointing can radically transform the call on a person’s life. The anointing can deeply affect the purpose, the mission, and the destiny of a person’s life!

The prophet Elisha desired the anointing with all his heart and never flinched. He had what I call a “thinking big” will! He never gave up. He experienced a huge transformation in every area of his life, expanding extraordinarily his area of influence. Before he was empowered by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, Elisha was simply a farmer who lived unknown to history. At the time, there is no mention of any miracles whatsoever being done by him. He had an absolutely ordinary life. After experiencing the double portion of the Spirit, everything changed. He jumped from just a servant lifestyle to a life marked by the supernatural.

After he was anointed, Elisha started having words of knowledge and started to see creative miracles in his life. He became a powerful prophet in his time. He was used by God to supernaturally change the course of nature, topography, weather dispositions, and see life spring forth from the dead. He prophesied the fall of the kingdoms and he ended famine and hunger. He also affected the course of economics by the power of prophecy. He directed governments, war courses/paths, and the destiny of kings. His word of command healed Naaman’s leprosy, the Syrian general, besides keeping the Shunammite’s family from the crisis that devastated Samaria for seven years. Elisha, who lived in the field, started being heard as a prophetic voice in palaces.

Steve Long, who has been my good friend for years, says, “There is only one Holy Spirit.” The same Spirit who was upon Elisha, Peter, and Paul is the same Holy Spirit who dwells in you. And if the same Spirit who performed all these works by the prophet Elisha is dwelling in you, then you can also do what Elisha did. Desire the double portion of the Spirit with all your heart!

The Power of the Anointing

The anointing is the overflow of Christ in your life! It comes to us when we spend time in God’s Word, seek Him with all our hearts, and worship Him. Jesus said:

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you (John 15:7).

We increase our anointing by spending time in His presence. And in time, you will begin to know when the presence of the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

Revelation of the Anointing

I was invited to Israel to speak to a group of pastors. This was directly after the Lord asked me to learn everything possible about the anointing. From my room, I saw Bedouin shepherds roaming with their sheep. In my hand, I had a vacation Bible school lesson that my wife gave me to review and study for the following Sunday service, as she was one of the children’s pastors. As I was reading the Sunday school lesson and watching the shepherds, I heard the Lord speak to me: “The anointing means to rub.” It was like I was getting a visual, a written, and an audible message hitting me all at once. It was all revelation based.

The VBS lesson was about the practice of a shepherd anointing his sheep. As the shepherd would roam the hills and land with the sheep he loves and watches over, he would pour oil on the sheep and rub it into their wool. Stickers and other insects often got in the sheep’s wool and could harm the sheep. In fact, if certain bugs entered the sheep’s ears, they could get into the brain. The pain from the bugs would be so severe that the sheep would bang its skull on rocks and against trees to ease its suffering. The sheep could break its own skull seeking relief from the brain-eating parasites.

Therefore, shepherds poured oil on the head of the sheep. The oil acted as a bug repellant against the insects. They could not come near the ears because of the oily substance on the sheep’s wool.

The Word of God tells us that God anoints His people with oil just as the shepherds anoint the heads of their sheep with oil. Because of this, the anointing is a symbol of blessing, protection, and strength. The anointing is our greatest weapon against the enemy’s attacks.

The Meaning of the Anointing

The Greek words for “anointing” are chrio—which means “blotch or rub with oil” and, by implication, “to be consecrated to the religious office or service”—and aleipho, which means “to anoint.” In biblical times, people were anointed with oil to represent God’s blessing, calling, or even comfort upon their life (see Exod. 29:7; 40:9; 2 Kings 9:6; Eccles. 9:8; James 5:14). A person was anointed for a special purpose—to be a king, to be a prophet, to be a builder, etc.

Nowadays, there is nothing wrong with anointing someone with oil. Our only concern should be that the purpose of the anointing is according to Scripture. The anointing shouldn’t be seen as a magic potion. The oil has no special value in itself, unless the supernatural Presence comes on the oil. Only God can anoint a person for a specific purpose. If we use the oil, it is just a symbol of what God is doing. We have seen all kinds of supernatural activity—oil being released from Bibles, through people’s hands, etc.

The other meaning of the word anointed is “chosen.” The Bible says Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the good news and set free those who were being held captives under sin (see Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38). After Jesus, the Christ—literally, “the anointed one”—left the earth, He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit (see John 14:16). Now every Christian is anointed, chosen for a specific purpose, which is to promote the Kingdom of God (see 1 John 2:20).

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee (2 Corinthians 1:21-22).

The Multiplication of the Anointing

In 1 Kings 17, we read about Elisha and the widow of Zarephath. The widow desperately needed a miracle. All she had left for her and her son was a bit of flour and a small quantity of oil to make some food. God performed a miracle that changed her life completely by multiplying her offering much beyond anything she could have dreamed. The oil and flour in the different jars did not run out until the rain came.

Today, when God starts moving in your life, the oil begins to flow, taking care of every need in your life. You will not lack anything. That’s what God wants for you today. He is moving powerfully on the face of the earth. When you seek Him with all your heart, the oil will flow over you, and all your desires will be met. When He is the Shepherd of your life, you lack nothing!

Multiplication Scriptures and Examples

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28).

Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: “By Myself I have sworn…blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies” (Genesis 22:15-17).

I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small (Jeremiah 30:19).

Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied (Acts 9:31).

1. The multiplication of the flour and oil (see 1 Kings 17:16)

2. The multiplication of wealth (see Genesis 30:35-43)

3. The multiplication of seeds (see Mark 4:26-28)

4. The multiplication of the fish and bread (see John 6:1-14)

6. The multiplication of the disciples (Acts 6:7)

7. The multiplication of the oil (see 2 Kings 4:1-7)

Revival Multiplication

We read in the book Acts: “But the word of God grew and multiplied” (Acts 12:24). When the Holy Spirit comes with power, a great multiplication of the Church takes place. When the church is in a revival, as Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “When God acts, he can do more in a minute than man with his organising can do in fifty years.”(1)

Dash Integrations of the Week:

Destinia Travel Booking Site Adds Dash for Select Flights: The popular travel site has added Dash to their cryptocurrency offerings, but not all of their flights accept Dash and there is not currently a way to filter for only Dash-accepting flights. Destinia did tell Dash News that, as a general rule, flights will typically not accept cryptocurrency if it is less than 48 hours nor will low-cost airlines. Luckily, Dash users have other alternatives, such as XcelTrip, Travala, and CheapAir.com

BitMart Top Cryptocurrency Exchange Adds Dash With InstantSend Support: The cryptocurrency exchange will integrate Dash with USDT, BTC, and ETH trading pairs and InstantSend support. In their integration announcement, they cite their extensive reviewal process and found “that DASH is structured and promoted as ‘Utility Token’, and therefore, should be not categorized as ‘Security’” and “decided that listing DASH is in compliance with local rules and regulations in areas where we operate”. This shows that while some exchanges are pondering delisting Dash due to its PrivateSend feature, other exchanges find Dash to be no different than other major coins in a regulatory sense.

Gentarium Integrates Dash Into Masternode Hosting and Shared Masternode Services: The masternode, mining, and loan management platform has integrated Dash support for masternode hosting as well as for masternode shares. The integration adds to the different options that individuals have when choosing a Dash masternode hosting service and the shared masternode service compliments the likes of CrowdNode, Neptune Dash, Cobo Wallet, and Snode which enhances the robustness of the Dash masternode ecosystem.

Coinify Integrates Dash, Adds Tens of Thousands of Dash Merchants: The full cryptocurrency services provider that includes merchant services like payments and invoicing, trading API, and trading platform have integrated Dash. The integration will further help lower the cost of Dash integrations for merchants much like other integrations like UTRUST, Bitgo, Salamantex, and others have lowered integration costs and enabled future integrations with merchants.

OKEx Korea Pauses Previously-Announced Dash Delisting Pending Research: OKEx announced a few weeks ago their intention to delist XMR, DASH, ZEC, ZEN, SBTC due to their conflict with new FATF guidelines. However, they have now announced that they will pause the delisting of Dash and ZCash pending further research into the topic. Ryan Taylor, CEO of Dash Core has previously detailed how PrivateSend works and why it should not be treated any differently from Bitcoin with Coinjoin mixers. Also recently, Dash was integrated into Coinbase and Coinsbase Pro, which serves the U.S. market that is known for being one of the toughest financial regulatory environments in the world.

DuckDuckGo Consumer Survey Shows Increasing Demand for Privacy: A new survey by the privacy-focus search engine and browser, shows that consumers have been taking active steps to achieve greater privacy, including seeing its own year-over-year traffic grow by 68%. The increased demand for privacy comes as more and more individuals are having their identifying information and even credit card and bank info leaked through online hacks. Dash offers these individuals more privacy through PrivateSend and is attempting to improve privacy usability with upcoming blockchain usernames and zero-knowledge proofs on the Dash Platform as a part of Evolution.

IRS Updates Cryptocurrency Tax Guidance, Forked Coins Now Liable: The United States tax authority released its first cryptocurrency tax guidance update since 2014 and clarified some issue along with adding tax liability for forked coins. Unfortunately, no minimum exemption was added so, technically, all purchases are liable even if it is just buying a cup of coffee with Dash. While having better guidance will ease confusion, the lack of favorable tax policy towards using it as cash will limit its adoption. To help make tax filings easier, Dash has had a robust history with no chain splits since upgrades have gone smoothly with soft forks, which are not liable and companies like Node40 exists to help document cryptocurrency taxes.

PayPal to Leave Facebook’s Libra Exposing Weaknesses of Centralized Projects: PayPal has officially withdrawn from Facebook’s Libra association and MaserCard and Visa have clarified that their participation is conditional that “the association [can] satisfy all the requisite regulatory requirements”. The growing doubt around the legality of the Libra highlights the near-impossibility of a centralized challenge to government fiat money, much like e-gold and Liberty Reserve were met with failure. Cryptocurrency that is decentralized stands a better chance since no one central group can be pressured to shut it down and Dash is constantly working towards that by remaining open and transparent so community members can continuously push for improvements and more decentralization.

Tim Draper Launches Dash-Like Universal Cryptocurrency Username System: The Tim Draper VC-backed Unstoppable Domains announced in a press release this week the deployment of a domain name service on the Ethereum blockchain which allows users to link cryptocurrency addresses for easier payment. They believe there is significant interest in the technology with individuals already purchasing 100,000 .zil domains – the company’s first domain extension. They cite the need to simplify the sending and receiving process from the non-intuitive alphanumeric cryptographic addresses. The development also resembles Dash usernames and Dash Platform Naming Service (DPNS) that is in development to be launched as a part of Evolution.

Lesbian Video Game ‘Heart of the Woods’ Crowdfunds Voice Acting

On October 1st, 2019, Studio Élan launched a Kickstarter campaign for their Yuri visual novel Heart of the Woods. The campaign will run till October 31st. The game was initially released for PC, Mac, and Linux in February by Sekai Games. A Nintendo Switch port, with the adult content removed, is scheduled for release early next year.

The Kickstarter will fund full English voice acting for the game. The optional H-scenes in the PC release will not be voiced. Funding will also be used for physical releases of the game’s PC edition and additional merchandise, such as a physical soundtrack, acrylic keychains, magnets, and other items available to backers.

Studio Élan created the Kickstarter with a $17,000 goal and quickly started receiving pledges, hitting the 50% mark within the first four hours of the campaign's launch. The studio set three stretch goals for the project: at $20,00, they will add additional voice content to non-dialogue scenes and “do a couple touch-ups to the game.” If $35,000 is contributed, physical copies of the Nintendo Switch port will be made available. Note that the digital release of Heart of the Woods on the Switch is not dependent on this Kickstarter. Any excess funding will go towards the development of future games.

The English voice cast for Heart of the Woods was publically announced in a trailer for the Kickstarter on September 30th. The cast is as follows:

Casting and direction is done in cooperation with Studio Coattails and is by Wyatt “Syon Santeria” Abernathie (Highway Blossoms, National Park Girls).

Voice acting will be patched in for free for all current owners of the game and will be included on release on the Nintendo Switch version.

The visual novel is directed and co-written by Studio Élan founder Josh Kaplan (Highway Blossoms) alongside co-author Rachel Gruber. It features CG artwork and sprites by Rosurri and a soundtrack by Sarah “esselfortium” Mancuso and Kris "Astartus" Flacke. Additional staff includes programming and visual direction by Minute and UI design by Adirosa. The ending theme was composed by In Love With a Ghost and features vocals by Ukuletea.

Heart of the Woods follows paranormal vloggers Maddie and Tara as they journey to a remote village in the middle of the woods. They have low expectations but soon find themselves thrust into the mysterious and magical woods where they encounter a centuries-old curse, mystical creatures, and an extremely gay ghost. The game contains optional adult content available via an external patch.

I reviewed the PC release of Heart of the Woods on Okazu and awarded it a 9/10 overall rating.

Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia adalah salah satu fakultas di Universitas Indonesia yang tidak pernah padam. FHUI sungguh adalah rumah kedua bagi banyak mahasiswa, mulai dari menjalani aktivitas perkuliahan, rutinitas organisasi, kepanitiaan hingga perlombaan yang membuat mahasiswa FHUI tak pelak tak terlelap. Namun kampus FHUI senantiasa berjalan dengan baik setiap hari, dari tahun ke tahunnya. Baik dekanat, dosen, karyawan dan segenap jajarannya tak lepas yang mewujudkan hal ini bisa terjadi. Namun jarang atau hanya beberapa orang yang sungguh memperhatikan kehidupan mereka, terutama karyawan. Apakah mereka telah dapat hidup sejahtera dari gaji yang didapat? Apakah kehidupan keluarga mereka terjamin? Apakah mereka tidak lelah terus mengepel disaat kampus FHUI banyak tergenang saat hujan dan tersisa jejak-jejak kaki penuh lumpur hasil lalu lalang mahasiswa yang saat sudah bersih kemudian dilewati kembali dengan jejak penuh lumpur lainnya?

Berangkat dari keprihatinan dan kepedulian untuk kesejahteraan kehidupan karyawan FHUI Mengabdi, Departemen Pengabdian Masyarakat BEM FHUI Mengabdi tergerak untuk membuat suatu program kerja yang berfokus untuk anak karyawan khususnya beasiswa pendidikan yakni FHUI Mengabdi.

FHUI Mengabdi adalah program kakak-adik asuh antara mahasiswa FH UI dengan anak dari karyawan FH UI. Konsep dasar dari acara ini adalah untuk mengumpulkan sejumlah uang untuk membiayai keperluan anak dari para karyawan. Oleh karena perbedaan kebutuhan dari para anak-anak karyawan, maka ditentukan jumlah uang yang akan diberikan tergantung dari jenjang pendidikan para anak karyawan tersebut. Anak di jenjang Sekolah Dasar akan diberikan uang sejumlah Rp 600.000,00, jenjang Sekolah Menengah Pertama akan diberikan uang sejumlah Rp 750.000,00, jenjang Sekolah Menengah Keatas akan diberikan uang sejumlah Rp 800.000,00. Para karyawan akan diberikan kesempatan untuk mendaftarkan anak-anak mereka di program FH UI Mengabdi ini, dengan cara mengumpulkan beberapa berkas yang akan digunakan sebagai syarat-syarat memilih peserta donasi FH UI Mengabdi. Beberapa berkas yang harus dikumpulkan adalah kartu rapot anak, kartu keluarga, serta slip gaji karyawan. Tahun ini telah terpilih 25 anak karyawan yang terdiri atas 10 anak SD, 13 anak SMP, dan 2 anak SMA. Uang donasi dikumpulkan dari para peserta donatur yang telah secara sukarela mendaftarkan diri dengan mengisi formulir yang menyatakan kesediaan untuk membayar sejumlah uang sebagai donasi FH UI Mengabdi. Masing-masing donatur bisa memilih jumlah uang yang didonasikan, mulai dari Rp 75.000, Rp 125.000, Rp 225.000, dan jumlah bebas. Kemudian ada juga donasi wajib yang dibayarkan oleh semua anggota BEM FH UI yang jumlah donasinya berbeda-beda; staff wajib membayar Rp 75.000, BPH wajib membayar Rp 125.000, dan PI wajib membayar Rp 225.000.

Donasi dapat dibayar secara langsung lunas maupun cicilan yang akan ditagih setiap bulan mulai dari bulan Juni sampai dengan bulan November. Lalu, donasi akan diberikan kepada para anak karyawan di acara Charity Concert yang diadakan di bulan November. Selama berjalannya program FH UI Mengabdi ini, kami menghadapi beberapa kendala seperti kurangnya respon para donatur saat ditagih untuk membayar uang donasi, namun hal itu juga dapat disebabkan oleh karena kurang giatnya kinerja untuk menagih para donatur. Kendala lainnya adalah adanya beberapa donatur yang mengaku tidak pernah mendaftarkan diri sebagai donatur, sehingga mereka tidak mau membayar uang yang ditagih. Namun untungnya, semua uangnya dapat tersalurkan dengan baik kepada para anak karyawan dan para karyawan juga dapat merasakan rasa syukur para mahasiswa atas kerja dan pelayanan mereka yang secara langsung dan tidak langsung mempermudah kehidupan di kampus.

FHUI Mengabdi tidak hanya sekedar sebuah program kerja semata, FHUI Mengabdi adalah mengenai bagaimana menjadi ‘trigger’ segenap masyarakat FHUI untuk lebih peduli dan peka lagi terhadap keadaan sekitar. Penulis percaya Tuhan sudah begitu baik untuk segala limpahan berkat dengan porsi masing-masing yang diterima segenap masyarakat FHUI. Dengan menjadi berkat dan berbagi kebahagiaan orang lain adalah suatu bentuk ungkapan syukur paling tulus. Dengan peduli dan memberi, seberapapun  itu banyaknya,membuat perubahan. Perubahan tidak dimulai dengan hal besar namun mulai dengan memberi sedikit demi sedikit, membangkitkan hati yang bersukacita memberi yang tanpa sadar telah mengubah hidup orang lain. Senyum yang tergurat di bibir para karyawan melihat anaknya bisa hidup dengan lebih baik adalah momen yang priceless. Terbersitlah pesan bahwa kebahagiaan tidak selalu saat kita menerima sesuatu, mendapat sesuatu. Tapi juga disaat kita memberi, menabur benih kebaikan yang tanpa sadar telah mengubah hidup orang lain.

The Work Is Slow by Body Meπa

Body Meπa brings together New York musicians Sasha Frere-Jones and Grey McMurray on guitars, bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer Greg Fox on an album that weaves together various strands of downtown experimentation into a tapestry that explores the avant-rock textures and improvisational dynamics for which the four are known. Frere-Jones is best known as co-founder of dub/funk influenced post-rock trio Ui, McMurray’s CV includes work with John Cale and Colin Stetson, Briggs has played with Defunkt, The Rollins Band and Sonny Sharrock, and Fox is a go-to drummer on the contemporary music scene. All of which is to say there are serious chops involved here and each shines individually leaving their egos at the door to create a series of soundscapes that encapsulate the spirit of the creative environment in which they are involved.

Opener "Horse Flower Storm/Fabuloso" sounds on the face of it like a repetitive lysergic jam, a kind of decelerated Television like extrapolation of surf rock under which Gibbs’ bass bubbles like a hot mud pool. Frere-Jones’ circular jazz influenced vamps and flanged twang carry the main theme as McMurray interpolates pointillist notes and smears of distortion that echo and emphasize. Fox provides both foundation and detail, his drumming relying on rhythmic subtlety rather than bombast. Body Meπa are all about finding a groove and exploring every nuance of its possibility, it’s all about feel rather than flash. Even when the riffage comes the quartet seek not to beat you about the head but get inside it. “Bullitt” evokes another erstwhile downtown mainstay in Bill Laswell and Fred Frith’s noise monster Massacre with squalls of feedback and nervous scratchy chords, Gibb’s dub core bass and Fox’s roiling percussion. It hits like a tsunami but somehow with a space to breathe, the mix separates the guitars, which ring distinct from right and left channels. On “Rice Tea” jazz chords ride a deep funk groove before building into a maelstrom of reverb and delay with the logic of free jazz rather than rockist hubris. 

As Body Meπa, Frere-Jones, McMurray, Gibbs and Fox use the structure of jazz, the space of dub, the circularity of minimalism and the repetition of trance to free up the classic rock guitar, guitar, bass, drums configuration. They are not the first to do it but the caliber of the musicians, individually and as a collective, the wealth of ideas and the generosity of the music make The Work Is Slow a compelling listen.

US New Weekly Jobless Claims Seen Falling Below 2 Million

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits likely dropped below 2 million last week for the first time since mid-March, but remains astonishingly high as companies adjust to an environment that has been significantly changed by COVID-19.

Nevertheless, the weekly jobless claims report from the Labor Department on Thursday would suggest the worst is over for the labor market, combined with data on Wednesday that showed a smaller-than-expected drop in private payrolls in May.

Surveys have also shown consumer confidence, manufacturing and services industries stabilizing albeit at low levels in May, indicating the downturn triggered by a near shutdown of the country in mid-March to control the spread of COVID-19 was bottoming. Many businesses had reopened by mid-May.

Economists said the stubbornly high number of unemployment claims comes from a second wave of layoffs as businesses navigate weak demand, as well as some lingering backlogs at state unemployment offices overwhelmed by the flood of applications early in the shutdown.

“Many of the new claims reflect current layoffs, as the corporate sector more broadly begins to adjust to the altered outlook for the year ahead,” said Lou Crandall, chief economist of Wrightson ICAP LLC in Jersey City, New Jersey. “Even as the economy begins to reopen, new job losses continue to pile up.”

New claims for state unemployment benefits likely totaled a seasonally adjusted 1.8 million for the week ended May 30, down from 2.123 million the prior week, according to a Reuters survey of economists. Claims have declined since hitting a record 6.867 million in late March.

Boeing <BA.N> and pipeline operator Energy Transfer <ET.N> have announced layoffs, while some big retailers like JC Penney and high-end chain Neiman Marcus have filed for bankruptcy. States and local governments, whose budgets have been decimated by the COVID-19 fight, are also cutting jobs.

The government’s closely watched employment report for May, scheduled for release on Friday, is likely to show nonfarm payrolls falling by 8 million in May after a record 20.537 million plunge in April, according to a Reuters survey of economists. The unemployment rate is forecast rocketing to 19.8%, a post World War Two record, from 14.7% in April.

NOISY SIGNALS

The weekly jobless claims report is the most timely data on the economy’s health, but it could become difficult to get a clear picture of the labor market in the weeks ahead. Initial claims are recorded when a person submits a first application for unemployment benefits. Once approved they become continuing claims and are reported with a one-week lag.

As part of a fiscal package worth nearly $3 trillion, the government greatly expanded eligibility for unemployment benefits to include self-employed and independent contractors who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These workers do not qualify for the regular state unemployment insurance (UI) and must file under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.

The government also extended regular state jobless benefits by another 13 weeks under a program called Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC).

Roughly 30 states are now reporting PUA claims on a weekly basis but PEUC figures are reported with a two-week lag.

Moreover, neither PUA nor PEUC are included in the initial claims and continuing claims figures, which economists say grossly understates the tragedy caused by COVID-19.

Economists recommend focusing on benefit recipients for all programs, which totalled 30.1 million in the week ending May 9.

“Many commentators are reporting the cumulative number of initial regular state UI claims over the last 10 weeks as a measure of how many people have applied for UI in this pandemic,” said Heidi Shierholz, a former chief economist at the Labor Department.

“We should abandon that approach because it ignores PUA, and is thus an understatement on that front, but may overstate things in other ways,” added Shierholz, now a policy director at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington.

Amid the different moving parts, the labor market is showing early signs of improvement. Continuing claims, the number of people still receiving unemployment benefits after an initial week of aid, dropped 3.860 million to 21.052 million in the week ending May 16.

Continuing claims are expected to have declined to 20.05 million in the week ending May 23, according to the Reuters survey. Economists believe continuing claims peaked at 24.9 million in early May.

“We will get back half of the jobs lost by Labor Day,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania. “The unemployment rate will settle around 10%.”

Main solos to maiden title in East Rand Classic

Kent Main shrugged off a recent illness to solo to his maiden win in the Takealot East Rand Classic cycling road race in Kempton Park in Johannesburg today.

The 23-year-old ProTouch rider got away from a breakaway group with about 15km to go in the 98km feature race (formerly the Emperors Palace Classic) and was able to hold on for a satisfying victory.

He crossed the line in a time of 2:23:01, just more than two minutes ahead of teammate Rocco King and Cycle Power’s James Barnes.

Main, from Linden in Johannesburg, said he was pleased with his performance after returning from the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia with a viral infection.

“Physically I’m feeling fine and that’s great because this was my first week back cycling after an illness,” he said.

“I have been riding every day just to get back into it, so I didn’t quite know how it would go.

“But this was the best I have felt all week and it’s really good to get a win under the belt, which is always a big positive for your confidence.”

Although he is known for his climbing prowess and had said this sort of route didn’t really suit him, Main added that there was not much sign of aggressive riding from his rivals.

“The main break of the day of about 11 riders came after about 20km, but there weren’t any real tactics going on, with almost a negative pace within the group.

“I eventually got away with James Barnes and we were working quite well together. But I wasn’t fully committed because it was still quite far to go and I wasn’t quite sure how I would feel after coming off an illness.”

The breakaway group closed the gap on the pair, but Main then put in another surge.

“At that stage I managed to get a small gap and as soon as I saw that I put my head down and it was a solo effort to the finish.

“That was quite hard but it was a good day out and a great test for my legs to see what sort of condition I am in.”

The women’s feature race was won by Clover’s Sanet Coetzee, who outsprinted Heidi Dalton of Demacon MaxWax Racing in the dash for the line. Kim le Court, also of Demacon, came in third.

The 35-year-old Coetzee, from Faerie Glen in Pretoria, was delighted with her top podium finish after playing second fiddle to Demacon in a number of races over the past 15 months.

“It seems that I have been stuck in a ‘Demacon sandwich’, last year and this year,” laughed Coetzee, “so I was extremely happy to win this one.”

With it being a generally flat and fast route, Coetzee, who finished in 2:37:44, said none of the attacks in the first half of the race amounted to anything.

“Then, just past the 50km mark, Heidi and Kim launched a serious attack and I got onto their wheels.

“It was basically two against one and although I didn’t really want to work with them, I decided I must so I could at least try for a spot on the podium.”

On the final incline, Coetzee put in an attack of her own and managed to shake off Le Court.

“Heidi stayed with me and I was ready to take her on in a sprint finish, so I went hard for the last 5km.

“I know the race timing had Heidi a minute behind me, but it was a sprint all the way to the finish and I just managed to stay ahead.”

Saturday saw the 50km and 25km mountain-bike races taking place.

Jean du Plessis won the men’s 50km in 1:45, while Ruan Greeff took the shorter race in 53:56.

The women’s 50km title went to Tanielle Hermanson in 2:10:56 and the 25km version was won by Marlene van Heerden in 1:14:00.
