Moongene concept, lingering Sundrop scars, and bonus RTA s3 rewrite
My friends i’m not an artist, so just take these words and go.
Rapunzel has a clear indicator of her being nearby the Moonstone - her hair floats upward and glows. I think it’d be nice if Eugene had some kind of effect on his body as well.
and uh...season 2 ending rewrite into season 3 AU happened
More under the cut
Eugene has been healed by the Sundrop twice at least.
(I feel like Rapunzel certainly banged him up while putting him in the closet and did a healing when she tied him up in the chair, but eh. It was offscreen and not dramatic enough.)
1st time: Cut on the palm on his hand, healed by wet hair directly on the wound.
2nd time: Stab wound in his stomach, healed by tears on his cheek.
Both of those scars glow when he’s near the Moonstone. He doesn’t know it at all because he’s got his gloves on and his shirt on, but he feels it. His hand sweats, his stomach/liver area is warm. He dismisses it as nerves, but once they’re in the chamber...
“Rapunzel you’re glowing~”
“So are you~” Rapunzel strokes his cheek, where there are bright little dots.
“Aww. wait what?” Eugene flinches, pulls out his compact mirror (because of course that man would have a compact, have you not been paying attention) and pulls off his glove. The scar itself is glowing a steady gold, and there’s a faint impression of hair strands surrounding it, also glowing.
(if Cassandra would have let him open up his shirt, they’d see an impression of the Sundrop flower - perpetually blooming, glow flickering in time with his heart. Arianna also was healed by the Sundrop as well, so she has glowing lips from when she drank the tea.)
“That’s - a nice thing you did, Sunshine.” because clearly it was just happenstance that he was healed and made it here, of all places. And this kind of ties in with my impression of Eugene - that he doesn’t really feel like he’s worth much, he has to upsell himself.
“When you take care of people and things – you go for the burning building first. The kids who broke an arm or are throwing up. Being as independent as I was, I just waited my turn. Other people got affection, I got leftovers.” Secondhand clothes from the older kids and secondhand affection from fans of Flynnigan Rider. He’s just – used to it. It’s what he thinks he deserves.
Edmund may have told him it’s his destiny to protect the Moonstone, that he’s worthy. but it doesn’t sink in. Not until Rapunzel reaches for it, and his scarred hand twitches.
It’s an easy grab, all things considered. Just a dash forward and (ignore that look of pain and shock in her eyes, shut yours tight, man this hurts) Easier than the Crown, at least. The remnants of Sundrop that was in him react with the Moonstone, both protecting him and causing a minor shockwave that throws everyone to the walls.
(he doesn’t want to think about if the full Sundrop made contact, he won’t think about what almost happened, it won’t ever happen, now.)
He looks up. Cassandra is holding Rapunzel back. Betrayal in both of their eyes.
“I can’t let you do this!” He’s not going be be able to get Rapunzel’s trust, her love back.
But he owes her an explanation. “I can’t let you die.”
(aaand cut to black. Cliffhanger baby~ and most of what’s left is an outline of s3, kind of mixing around the episode order too.)
Eugene’s Armor - skill skintight, but he places the Moonstone near his stab scar, the blue band is like a sash across his body.
“Woah oh ho! What a rush!” He looks up at his hair, it’s bright blue and he’s like “No. Bad color.” A silvery white. “heavens no.” black with dark blue strands. “Better.”
“What is going on?”
“The Sundrop - you saw how just a remnant just hurt everyone. I don’t want that for you.” Eugene starts. “If someone can control the Moonstone - retract all of the Black Rocks. That’s it. The world is safe, right?”
“Right.” Rapunzel nods. “But - what’s going to happen to you?”
He laughs, “Isn’t it my luck to be loved by the most compassionate woman in the world?” but he doesn’t answer. There’s not really an answer.
Eugene reaches for his knife, and the Black Rocks just - start encircling him, crawling over his skin. He uses his finger to make a divot and presses the Moonstone inside the hilt.
All at once the power fades. If he calls upon it, he could get armor. (so he couldn’t be hurt again.) But if he doesn’t. “Ah. Finally found a use for my second-favorite knife!” (it’s the knife that is strapped to his leg in his s3 outfit.)
So Eugene and Edmund start working on removing the Rocks. And - it’s great. They’re bonding - Lance has convinced Edmund that he’s his second son, Adira has been accepted back into the fold, there’s viable land underneath and Rapunzel is very sure she sees some curious travelers on the horizon that would like to settle down.
They’ve already made a new Caravan and were just about to leave, removing the Black Rocks on the path back to Corona. The other mystery this season is how to remove the Sundrop from Rapunzel. They want to stop by the Great Tree and research the library there - it may have an answer.
...and then the Balloon comes, and Rapunzel has to go back to her Kingdom immediately to save it from the Saporians.
Eugene can’t leave, he has to take the slow path back to Corona. Lance stays behind with him. They use Hamuel as their mail service.
(So instead of Rapunzel being betrayed by Cassandra and feeling her absence, wanting to reach out and come back and be friends again, how to deal with a friend fallout, it’s Rapunzel missing her partner Eugene, and how to deal with being apart from the person you love, and appreciating the other people in your life a bit more.)
They deal with the Saporians - instead of Eugene picking the lock to the jail cell, Cassandra gets the spare key since she knows where it is.
Most of the episodes do fine with Cassandra pinch-hitting for Eugene. She gets to be Captain like she’s always wanted, since her father is in the wind. But it’s not really fulfilling - she still has to listen to Rapunzel, and the Guards still listen to Rapunzel - Cassandra is slowly getting frustrated.
“King and Queen of Hearts” Rapunzel is missing Eugene fierce and is pouring all of that romantic energy into making Arianna and Fredrick remember and love each other again. She sees how Cassandra is trying to help and thanks her.
The “Return of the King” episode is actually a check back in on Eugene and Lance, and it’s combined with “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” because I still want Lance to be a Dad. Eugene is able to let his father know he belongs in Corona with Rapunzel - and Catalina speaks up and wants to go with them.
“Islands Apart” - Cassandra gets to confront her father about everything. His favorite version of her is a little girl - he still sees her as a kid and she’s mad about it.
“No time like the Past” is a story that Lance is telling Angry and Catalina while they’re on the road. Eugene is just like “eughh I miss my wife tails...i miss her a lot.”
“Race to the Spire” is a split perspective episode, Eugene and Lance find out about the Mind Trap, send Hamuel to tell Rapunzel, and they race there. Rapunzel and Cassandra race there as well. There’s a Reunion and it’s glorious and sweet.
“Be Very Afraid” is Eugene’s fears getting the better of him now that he’s back in Corona, and it’s affecting the Black Rocks, turning them Red. Solved like Canon, but Eugene has his fears solved with help from Cassandra and Lance, because - yeah they are his friends.
“Cassandra’s Revenge” is changed to Cassandra getting frustrated and stealing the Moonstone for One Episode Only. Rapunzel and her have a big battle talk, and she sets the Moonstone down and fully steps down from being Captain of the Guard, feeling like it’s not her.
“Flynnposter” Cassandra is there tracking down Brock-as-Flynn, so she sees how much he’s changed from the start. Cass nominates Eugene as Captain of the Guard. (but we all know it’s Maximus that’s really in charge.)
“A Tale of Two Sisters” this is where the reveal of Cassandra being Gothel’s kid goes - it’s a rough reveal for both of them. Cassandra is starting to learn that it’s not her origins that make her who she is. But also Rapunzel is a Princess and is a Princess and Eugene is a Prince is a Prince so...that doesn’t hit really well.
Edmund “disowns” Eugene and Lance so they don’t have to go back to the rebuilt Dark Kingdom. “We’re orphans...again.”
The Demanitus Scroll has a way to combine a person with magic and then separate a person from their magic. So they use it on Rapunzel so she’s normal - well. more normal than magical.
and uhh...for the finale we can have Hector pop back up trying to steal the Mind Trap because he’s worried that someone is going to control him and the Brotherhood. Culminating in him stealing the Moonstone, controlling the Brotherhood so the same doesn’t happen to him.
Cue huge finale fight.
Cassandra actually tries to reach out to Hector, saying she understands what it is to chase after a dream and be loyal to something that isn’t their destiny. This works. And Cassandra and Hector go traveling into the sunset as besties, trying to live their own lives.
Rapunzel and Eugene live happily ever after, as if that was even in question.

Why I see the Dark Kingdom, Quirin, and Varian as Jewish:
So I promised a post or so again to expand on my Jewish Varian headcanons, and I wanted to explain my rationale for my headcanon.
Names:
Adira’s name is Hebrew: אַדִּירָה. It means “strong” or “mighty.” Notably no one else in the series has a Hebrew name except Ruth, which is a common name used more widely. Adira however is a much rarer name and i have not seen it used beyond Star Trek and Hebrew. Given this is a world in the renaissance to the late 1700s (personally, I interpret it in the late 1700s), it also means that the modern state of Israel does not exist yet. Which leads me to my next point.
The Dark Kingdom: Exile and Return
Within Tanakh, there is this major theme of exile (galut) and return as well as the “promised land.” The Latter Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel) expanded on this significantly. The Jewish people experienced two major exiles from the destruction of both of their Temples, something commemorated on Tisha B’av. These exiles were also preceded by environmental disasters because Hashem withdrew His protection. The land itself is described as a “land of milk and honey” and incredibly fruitful. However, in times of trouble, the land fails to yield to the Israelites and sees drought, famine, and fire.
The Dark Kingdom sees something similar. The land itself has become infested with near indestructible black rocks. Any attempt to destroy these black rocks has led to severe illness and death. Ultimately, all the kingdom’s inhabitants are forced away from their home to survive even as the black rocks spread from other people’s unwise actions (*cough* Fred *cough*). This leads to my next point.
The Parallel to Court Jews: Quirin
So Quirin’s role is very interesting. Reading between the lines, it seems that King Frederic swore Quirin to secrecy. Quirin has to communicate to the king in code when talking in front of other people about the black rocks. Even when it appears that he lied in front of his son. Quirin warns Varian to stop talking about what occurred (“That’s enough, Varian.”) which contrasts with his usual patient but exasperated behavior. This matter suggests a life or death matter and something that he could not even talk to his own family about.
There are parallels in Jewish history with this too: court Jews were a fixture in the Central Europe from the 16th century onwards (about the time period when Tangled the Series/Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure takes place). They were in a precarious position often wearing multiple hats as banker and protector of the Jewish community. Court Jews got certain privileges in exchange for their services and wealth. Court Jews had personal relationships to the people in power usually a prince. this relationship proved very risky to many court Jews (see Joseph Suess Oppenheimer). One wrong move and the entire Jewish community could be forced to leave or less charitably, killed.
Now whether Rapunzel takes place in Central Europe is debatable. The location of the finale shot is somewhere in modern day France. However, certain parts of modern France (Alsace) were part of the Holy Roman Empire depending on the time period. A lot of names used are German/Central European or used frequently in the region: Rapunzel, Frederic, Quirin (which is only used as a Roman name otherwise according to behind the name), Mother Gothel, Edmund etc.
We see some evidence of wealth or at least past wealth in Varian’s household. First, the family lives in a castle rather than a shack or a cottage. Second, the amount of red clothing in Quirin’s household. Quirin wears a dark red shirt, Varian owns a red scarf, and his mother is seen wearing a lot of red. Red was one of the more expensive dyes with madder being the cheapest version. There is also use of furs in Varian’s coat and Quirin’s vest, which was not cheap either. However, Quirin and Varian also straddle the line with being commoners. We see Quirin farming pumpkins and they are clearly inferior to the king. In addition, Old Corona appears to be impoverished, which only worsened from the black rocks.
Jewish Values: Education and Promises
Education is a major Jewish value. We believe in questioning and wrestling with Hashem. Literacy was of major importance to us and Jewish communities often had high literacy rates often higher than the rest of the population. Part of the reason is because we’re people of the book. The other reason is because literacy and knowledge are mobile skills that can be taken with us when we got kicked out again. Varian owns many books, and we see him read and write on the regular. Books weren’t. Education expanded in Western and central Europe during the enlightenment but schooling as a system was still in its early stages. Books were expensive, yet it is likely that those who place a higher value on education would invest in such.
The idea of a promised land forms a major ideological core for Judaism because it provided hope. Hope allowed the long-suffering Jewish people as a whole to keep going even during Egyptian enslavement, massacres, and pogroms. There’s a reason Israel’s national anthem is named Hatikvah (“the hope”). Some of our biggest quarrels come from when covenants and promises are broken. Vows in the biblical era were taken extremely seriously.
Within the show, Varian emphasizes the promises that Rapunzel made but ultimately broke. It may not just “bad behavior” or massive hurt but a major breach in values. Rapunzel broke the agreement between subject and ruler: a ruler was to protect their subjects.
Appearances
Varian, Quirin, Hector, and Edmund all have dark hair. Both Quirin and Edmund have aquiline noses, which are common Mediterranean features. Corona is nowhere near the Mediterranean 🤨.
Varian’s mother also has red hair. Red hair is a polygenic trait that often occurs in a recessive fashion. That means two parents with other hair colors can carry red hair traits and pass them to their children. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Jews were often believed to red hair. Judas and Shylock from the Merchant of Venice were often depicted with red hair. This stereotype has some grains of truth as certain Tanakh figures like Esau and David have red hair or are described as ruddy and red. Because most Jews especially in the premodern age married within the tribe, a lot of traits that are rarer among the general population have been seen more frequently in Jewish populations including red hair and genetic conditions.
The Ham Sandwich Paradox: Obscure Jewish Food History
But wait! What about Varian’s ham sandwiches? Ham is made of pig and pigs aren’t kosher. Therefore, they can’t be Jewish.
Ah, this is where I talk about Jewish ham. Ham made of pork is indeed not kosher at all. However, Sephardic Jews and the Jews of Italy have made “Jewish ham” and “Jewish prosciutto” since about the Renaissance era. It came from curing goose or duck, which were kosher birds. I have tasted cured duck at a restaurant, and it takes remarkably like pork. One could interpret Varian talking about pork ham but Varian doesn’t say what kind of ham and he could just as easily be referring to “Jewish ham.”
Why Jewish representation matters
Tangled the Series/Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure is a piece of media that I wrestle with a lot. The series did a lot of great things but it and the original movie did a piss poor job at handling Jews (in the movie and series) and Romani (definitively in the series). Here I will discuss the Jewish aspect since I am Jewish, not Romani.
Mother Gothel’s character resembles the very definition of old blood libels common in Europe that “Jews kidnap gentile children (especially blondes) and use them for ritualistic purposes.” Her design was changed from gothic romantic to something more “Jewish-coded” and thus more villainous. This is very much a problem especially as we consider the rise of antisemitism. It became worse in the series when we found out that Cass was Gothel’s daughter and that Cass was abandoned in favor of kidnapping Rapunzel. Cass then became a villain because of this. Media depictions like Gothel actively harm our community by reinforcing old dangerous stereotypes. Given these strong negative representations of Jews, I wanted to dilute the pool through making positive Jewish representation. I wanted to make space for myself and other Jews within this piece of media that has harmed our community.
These hints may simply be coincidental if taken in isolation. In stringing them together, we can construct a space where Jews can be represented positively and accurately in the tangled universe.

Immortal King Edmund AU
(aka the secret 10th option of the Dark Prince Eugene poll that I just thought of today.)
tl:dr. Edmund is the chill selfless immortal to foil with Gothel’s controlling selfish immortal. Eugene isn’t his son he’s his second cousin yada yada times removed.
He’s lived in his Castle for a long time, giving Rapunzel an opportunity to help someone like her. He’s loyal to his job like Cassandra is, which causes her to rethink her life choices. He’s actually responsible but also still has his quirks, which shows Lance that he doesn’t have to shy away from his obligations to live a happy life
you know. just overthinking things and mushing them into an emotional arc that could have worked in the show.
here’s a ficlet for an immortal who’s just “some guy.” under the cut. Never had a plan in his head or wanted to hurt nobody, just wanted to do his family proud.
The Moonstone can grant people immortality; making their aging stop, their skin as hard as the Black Rocks, and keep their minds clear as moonlight. Edmund’s father had discovered the Moonstone and shared it’s power with his entire village.
The immortal villagers build a Castle to live in together, to protect themselves and the Moonstone from those who would want to use it for evil.
But immortal doesn’t really mean unkillable. After some well-meaning and not well-meaning magic hunters, people who leave the light of the Moonstone, and just plain accidents, the Castle becomes silent, the mortal people having left to their own relatively safer villages.
The only ones that remain immortal are Edmund, Adira, Hector, and Quirin.
They decided to paint the Moonstone as a powerful artifact that’s too dangerous to use. They are still in contact with their mortal subjects, but in a few generations, the full truth is lost.
Edmund had a plan in place where in 50 or so years he would “die” and make Quirin the next King, then swap to someone else. That happened a few times, and Edmund even let himself be an “advisor” for a new bloodline for a few decades before faking his death and moving to a nearby village. Rinse and repeat if needed.
No one really recognizes him until someone finds the old paintings in the Castle. (to be fair, they don’t have instant cameras, just paintings that could take hours, if not days, filled with symbolism even and no one really comes to the Castle to look at the paintings, really!)
There’s a whole revolution to get “the rightful heir” back on the throne. It’s a comedy of errors almost. If he wasn’t concerned about people dying in the pointless fight, he’d find it very funny. (He’ll laugh about it one day. one day, in an empty Castle with only caws answering back.)
Edmund is back in the spotlight, with guards and people and the ever present knowledge that he won’t age like them. He caught the eye of some lovely women and thought about children, not for the first or last time in his long life.
But what legacy could he leave - if he doesn’t ever leave?
That’s what drove him to attack the Moonstone, to remove the blessing-curse-blessing. The truth, as always, was hidden from his advisors, hidden from the mortals with their short lives and vivid minds. The Moonstone is out of control - he would say.
Quirin called him out on his fears. Took the people he swore to protect away. Adira left after always leaving to go search here and there. Hector - he actually thinks Hector believes he died.
It doesn’t matter. The village - his home, it’s gone. It was buried underneath the Castle, the wood decayed a hundred times over. He can’t go back to a full Castle, or even a half-full one. It was just him.
(Despite how certain he was alone, he was wrong. People sent letters. He wrote back, when he didn’t feel like time was slipping through his fingers.)
The next 50 years were agonizing yet brief. Lonesomeness and grief and guilt swirled in his head. If he swears he writes it all down, maybe he can rest. (he barely rests.)
People break in for shelter. He attracts a village again. Gets a horse. Some people believe he's a ghost. (He lets them think it until they try to banish him.) He doesn't really talk to them. Doesn't reach out with the only hand he has left. There's a deluge of letters - a Princess of Corona and a merry band of friends. Requests to not attack.
(Of course he attacks, that’s half the fun!)
The one that stayed behind on the gondola was almost expected. A sacrifice play. Edmund paused, waiting for him to speak. People tend to fall into a few camps when pleading for their lives. He wondered what this - dashing rogue as he read about - would do.
“Oh, thank heavens you’re okay.” Sarcasm. Then. "What are you waiting for?"
Ah. Resignation. Contrition. Most aren't sorry to be searching for a powerful magical item, just sorry to be caught. He was good company for a Princess.
“Oh. You know. Fate. Destiny.” Edmund says. “You look familiar...oh!” he pulls out his reminder. An old, crinkled wanted poster with a teenager on it.
(Some villagers give him moral quandaries, like say a young boy who can’t survive without thieving. Keeps his mind sharp.)
“What. That’s the perfect poster!” the man cries.
And thus begins his relationship with a Eugene Fitzherbert.
He invites him inside, and gives his friends the whole tour. His speech that he’s given time and time again, tweaked for the ages. They stay, and when night falls and he settles his bedroll against the door to the Moonstone.
The Moonstone talks. whispers and says that her counterpart is here - that she’ll be leaving soon. Edmund gets up and does his rounds.
(he’s not sure, but the Stones hold onto words, things that others say.)
Eugene’s voice echoes.
“I’ve got an idea - the Minister said that his mind fades with the moon, right? His memories come and go. It’ll take two months, tops. I can get him and the Moonstone out of here.”
“two months?”
“He’s been here for over 300 years. that we know of. He’s not you, it’s not going to take 2 days and a lantern festival.” a sigh, “but I’m not going to do it if you don’t agree to it.”
Edmund gets context for what it is in the morning.
Eugene finds him looking up at the stained glass windows. “You know - meeting you, kind of feels like destiny brought me here.” and he spins a tale of orphan Eugene, with a charm from his world-traveling mother. Something he recognized, vaguely, as a graduation gift for his trainees. The supposition that - he, Edmund, was Eugene’s long lost father.
(there were no children born after the Moonstone was used. only people brought into the fold, adopted or married, bonds forged by familiarity, not blood. it - was acceptable. But he would never see a face like his father’s ever again.)
But fate must have intervened, because in that moment, Eugene did look much like his favorite cousin Levi.
So with Eugene reaching out - Edmund reached back. Gently prodded to come back into the world. They opened up to each other much like the Moonstone would open up to Rapunzel.
(then it was stolen, which - he supposed was a whole other kettle of fish. Cassandra - wanted to be a guard, right? Let her play, try on his clothes. She was mortal, he was not. He could wait until she was done.)
Traveling was as difficult and rewarding as he remembered. Corona was just as strange as he thought it was.
Unlike the Moonstone, the Sundrop Flower was embedded in the water cycle. It's magic passively infecting the land of Corona. The rivers - never poisoned or diseased. The animals - strangely intelligent. The people - content, pleasant and energetic even in old age. Quirin, who had been drinking it - suddenly sporting grey hairs and a new son. (He keeps calling the child Jordan despite his protests - it's not his fault that he shared a face of an uncle from centuries ago.)
Eugene - King of Corona in all but name - looks at him. "I talked to Quirin. You knew.” his face hardens. “Why are you here?”
"Feels like destiny brought me here." Edmund says wistfully.
“That was a horse you rode across an entire continent.” and his mouth curls into a smile. “Dad.”

Another 1 hour portrait: this time it's Hector!
Technically it was an hour and 2 mins, which is extra impressive because I did not realise YouTube had automatically played the next video and was expecting to have been drawing for hours without noticing but no, it was just 2 mins over the limit!!!! (so happy with myself XD)
This piece was one of those 'trust the process' pieces cause it was looking good... then terrible, then good again.... then it really had a downhill spiral during shading.... then it somehow ended up looking fine at the end XD
Hector has very different proportions to what I'm used to, but I think I did an okay job :D

I like to think that when it came to following Edmund's orders, the Brotherhood can be put into three categories: positive, negative and neutral.
Hector is positive because he followed them to the letter - he did everything in his power to stop anyone from reaching the Dark Kingdom.
Adira is negative because she actively disobeyed by helping Rapunzel get to the Moonstone.
Quirin is neutral since he gave up being a knight to settle down and have a family, so he wasn't actively affecting the situation one way or another. The one exception to this was when he warned King Frederick about the dangers of uprooting the Sundrop flower.
And yet, in their own ways, they were all still upholding their oath: to protect the world from the destructive powers of the moonstone.
#i mean if we're being honest quirin was slacking on that oath more than the other two but eh#he just wanted a normal life and honestly good for him#tts#tangled the series#rapunzels tangled adventure#tts brotherhood#tts adira#tts hector#tts quirin#rta#hector tts#adira tts#quirin tts#tangled#chill.faerie speaks
