The Tale of 2 Very Different Revolvers

I’ve always been a revolver fan. Some of the very first wheelguns I ever laid my hands on as a young lad were single action rimfire revolvers. My father had an old nickel plated Colt Peacemaker in .22 magnum as well as an old Ruger Bearcat .22 long rifle. These were perfect handguns for a youngster to cut his teeth on and get familiar with firearms and handguns in particular. Some years later as an adult, my father actually gave me my first revolver which I still own today. It’s an ex service revolver, the Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 15 in .38 Special. I actually learned to reload on that particular revolver. Fast forward to present time and this past year brought the revolver interest in me back out to the forefront. Earlier this year I picked up a Smith & Wesson 629 Deluxe 6.5” chambered in .44 Magnum from Brownells. Just this week I picked up a second Smith & Wesson Model 629 from Brownells, but this one is something quite different than the one from earlier this year. Quite the opposite to be exact.

The 629 Deluxe came with very nice wood grips, a full lug barrel, pinned front sight and case colored wide trigger and hammer. It’s one gorgeous wheelgun in stock form. Because of how stout the .44 magnum cartridge is in a handgun, I did opt to swap out the grips for a set of Hogue grips for a more pleasurable shooting experience, for my hand at least especially when running those hotter loads. Along with the grips I changed the springs out for a set of lighter Wolff springs from Brownells in order to lighten up the double action trigger pull ever so slightly. Ever since I picked up that revolver I’ve been on the hunt for a second revolver in .44 magnum. I truly enjoy reloading and shooting this heavy hitter. So just recently Brownells got the 629 2.5” Performance Center model in stock. As soon as I saw it, I placed an order as these don’t come in stock all too often.

When the newest 629 Performance Center showed up, it’s immediately apparent that it will in fact hurt to shoot for an extended amount of time, but this revolver is made for a totally different purpose. Visually it’s different with it’s matte finish, shorter wood grips, narrower hammer spur and trigger, slab side barrel and non fluted cylinder. The 2.5” barrel will surely make for some awesome fireball as well! This revolver is truly made for a self defense or even concealed carry scenario. Maybe even an outdoor expedition where you require something much more than your standard cartridge. It’s definitely not meant to be shot a ton at any range session unless maybe you’re running the pleasant .44 Special loads through it.

Both of these revolvers are in different classes, but both have very nice craftsmanship as one would expect from the folks over at Smith & Wesson. I suspect there’s going to be some future revolvers being added into the collection as time and money allows.

Do you think Weiss knows how to use all her teammates' weapons or just Gambol Shroud since they're more similar? Also, got any training headcanons?

Oh man do I have feelings about this. I mean the scene where Weiss uses Gambol Shroud in tears will haunt me forever. I honestly think Weiss probably knows the mechanics of each weapon on the team. I think this was probably like a class in Beacon where they had to learn how their team fought?

I'm convinced that Beacon had a 'Learn about your teammate's weapon' week and it was an absolute dumpster fire.

Ruby

With Ruby, it's Weiss and Blake being absolutely shocked at how heavy that cluncky gardening tool actually is while Yang is all smug and proud in the background.

Weiss isn't a fan of Crescent Rose mostly because it is legit terrible for the fighting style she's used to. But she gets very excited at the idea of using her glyphs to make Ruby and airborne weedwacker. I'm pretty sure she learnt how to twirl it like a baton and that's how she twirls the staff of creation like a damn pro in V8.

Blake likes moving fast and Crescent Rose is just too damn huge for her liking. There just isn't a function in CR for quick escapes and jumping across the battlefield like how Blake fights. But she is super impressed with how the weapon is constructed and they probably geek out over it. She especially loves the compact sniper version of it.

Yang knows how to use Crescent Rose cause she was there throughout the making of it but since she's a bit slower in movement than Ruby I think she favours using the gun more than the actual scythe.

Weiss

So many 'fancy toothpick' jokes. So many.

Ruby absolutely loves Myrtenaster for its revolving dust cartridge feature and you can bet she was itching to take it apart and see what combinations of dust she could try. She absolutely loves the the variety of glyphs and the idea of going faster than her semblance had her on a sugar high. Also there never goes a day where she doesn't try to convince Weiss to make it a gun somehow.

Blake likes it too, mostly because it's lightweight. But i think she'd be more intrigued on how Weiss combines different Glyphs with it. I like to think she heard about time dilation and they had hours and hours of discussions about it and what they could with it.

Yang being more of a heavy hitter does not like how... fragile(?) it looks? But she loves the combination of dust and glyphs and i can totally imagine her getting super excited and come up freezerburn. Yang's not the best at stealth and freezerburn gives her a really good cover on the battlefield. She also insists that Weiss get a shield like Pyrrha cause she doesn't like how exposed Weiss is to direct hits.

Also convinced that all of them think Weiss has the prettiest fighting form with all her spins and ballet moves.

Blake

They spend a day just trying to understand how the heck the weapon works.

Ruby can't stop raving about what a smart weapon Gambol is cause it's so customised to Blake's fighting style. Ruby loves the ribbon but never managed to figure out how to use it without getting tangled in it.

Weiss for the first time approves of a gun on a weapon. She does learn to shoot with it but jokes about how she'd never want to do that mid battle ever🤡. She loves the dual use of blade and sheath and maybe gushes about it with Ruby and Blake gets all shy and embarassed and feels very proud.

Yang takes to the weapon so fast everyone is surprised. She's the only who can work the ribbon really well and they legit don't even have to talk for Yang to catch the ribbon midair and trust Blake to swing her wherever next.

Yang

Everyone loves how they look wearing Ember Cecilia and they spend a while making boxer poses and taking pictures.

Ruby loves this weapon. It's her sister's baby and it packs a punch. But Ruby sucks at hand to hand combat and hopes the day she has to use it will never come. She almost very nearly convinces Yang to add in a rocket launcher until Weiss shoots it down.

Weiss tries shooting one time and the recoil knocks her 50ft backwards. Ruby, Blake and Yang have to act as back support cause she really wants to shoot once and she does and smiles and it's all worth it but RBY agree to never let her try this alone ever. Weiss does learn basic fighting moves and loves screaming upper cut while doing moves that are clearly not upper cuts.

Blake tries it once, master's it in record time and doesn't even bat an eye at the slack jawed RWY when she very nearly matches Yang in hand to hand. Yang might have fallen a little bit in love that day.
