"Do you think I like training the exact same kind of mage every half-millenium?" Gilvnchaud huffs wearily at my disbelief. Their sharp beak gnashes a loud crack, drowning any presumption of retort. "Every iteration of Dragonscriver before you has influenced the direction of your bipedal empires. Do you know how many have made the same causes for war? The same strategies to solve seemingly unsolvable woes!?" Smoke curls from the serpent's nostrils while their third lid slowly nictates.

"N-no. Though, I've never been very good with history," my body tremoring in conflict. Gilvnchaud the Magecrafter is famously friendly toward mortals, but that knowledge pales when confronted by fifteen meters of a grumpy fire breather. "It's just, you know, I can barely manifest a flame to light a match. What nation would take that kind of archmage seriously?"

Sensing my apprehension at their enormity, my new tutor nudges me with their snout. "You are not the first beginner to struggle. Should you never learn to be a novitiate in the art of spellwar, it would be no mark against your value. It may even be to your credit." A long talon gestures to a trove. Precious metals and gems, yes, but most notable are the many books. Among them are original manuscripts from prior holders of my title. "Tell me, what do you make of their appellations?"

I glance over the piles, immediately registering some of the most well known. Halidea, the Flame of Brokenwood; Valenwald, the Sun Driver; and Throngar, the Crag of Morrowtok. Another moment and the less discussed enter my awareness. Varsig, the Heartfeldt Mender; Seres, the Whisper Among Stars; and Alchiim, the Brewer of Bowery. I look back at my professor, completely oblivious to the lesson.

Plumes of chuckles preceding, "they each were summarized by their own admitted concentration. Some big picture, some small. None any less important than the others, in the grand scheme. Yet, none relegated exclusively to their prime field." Their tail produces a tome from elsewhere, drawing attention to a lecturn. The volume is placed open on the desk, beside an inkwell. In it, many signatures and scribbles in a table with columns labeled for the mage, their special interests, goals, and anxieties.

"Varsig, mental health, the forgiveness of debts, afraid of being misunderstood. Throngar, veterinary medicine, sustainable resources, afraid his people will suffer." I keep reading, finding the insight into their first steps relevant.

"First, you will learn to summon a quill, by which time should have excised from your mind who they thought you to be. Then, only then, should you be able to record for me who you are and who you wish to be."

"But conjuration is one of the most complex schools!" I flail, still grasping for any proof that there's been a mistake. "I'm hopeless with it!"

"Really?" Their beak framed by upturned lips. "We best get on with it, then. I want to take a nap within the next 10 years."

Every 500 years, the dragon who founded the Academy arrives to choose a student to tutor directly. You are the weakest mage on record and she has chosen you.

Steve Aoki, Nile Rodgers, Sam Feldt, XANDRA and Zak Abel Catapult into Party Season with Uplifting Reimagining of Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out”

After weeks of building anticipation across social media, a star-studded collaboration has arrived. Steve Aoki, Nile Rodgers, Sam Feldt, XANDRA and Zak Abel have unveiled “I’m Going Out,” a fresh reimagining of Diana Ross’ legendary anthem “I’m Coming Out.” The track is out today via Amsterdam-, New York- and London-based dance label Armada Music.

Sparked by an idea from two-time Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Steve Aoki and the legendary Nile Rodgers to create a contemporary anthem of celebration, “I’m Going Out” comes just in time for the party season. While drawing from the uplifting spirit and empowering message of Diana Ross’ 1980 hit song, the original gains a modern sonic thanks to Sam Feldt, XANDRA and Zak Abel, blending the instantly recognizable melodies from the original with a fresh production and new lyrics, to become first-ever dance reinterpretation of the classic. Nile Rodgers, who co-wrote and produced the original with Bernard Edwards of CHIC, brings his re-recorded signature guitar to the reimagined dance-pop version, marking the first time he has featured on a rework of the original as a performer.

The release follows a remarkable year for Nile Rodgers, with a recent Grammy nomination in the best pop/duo group performance category for Beyonce’s “Levii’s Jeans” to a string of successful releases, including a linkup with Cedric Gervais for a rework of Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” and “For Life” with Kygo and Zak Abel. Aoki, with his extensive cross-genre discography and collaborations with artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Maluma and BTS, continues to push the boundaries of genre and style.

Multi-platinum hitmaker Sam Feldt and DJ sensation XANDRA bring their signature house-pop style to “I'm Going Out,” following recent successes like Feldt’s chart-topping remix of global hit Mi Amor’ with JVKE & Anitta and XANDRA’s breakout debut “Body Say.” The track is fueled by minimalist drum beats, subtle percussion and an electrifying drop, with vocals from British star Zak Abel, whose career has soared through collaborations with icons like Kygo and Avicii.

On the linkup, Nile Rodgers said: “The original song holds a special place in my heart due to its incredibly uplifting energy and memorable message of inclusion. We wanted to preserve that spirit while introducing a new sound that feels fresh and exciting.”

“I’m Coming Out,” originally released in 1980, became a defining anthem for the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating personal freedom, self-expression and embracing one’s true identity. Written and produced by Rodgers and Edwards, the song’s empowering lyrics and vibrant disco sound propelled it to global success, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has since become a staple of global Pride celebrations and an enduring symbol of liberation and individuality.

Ik heb voor de artiest Sam Feldt gekozen omdat hij muziek maakt waar je goed op kan dansen. Ook zijn het allemaal liedjes die je vlot kan meezingen. Meer specifiek heb ik voor het lied Post Malone gekozen omdat het mij doet denken aan het leuke chirokamp van deze zomer. Het was namelijk onze kampdans. In dit lied spreekt voornamelijk de beat, het tempo en het ritme mij aan omdat je hier goed op kan dansen. Ook de tekst was zeer toepasselijk voor op kamp. Ze zingen namelijk “we are never going home”. Ik hoorde het lied voor het eerst op kamp. Hiervoor had ik het nog nooit gehoord.

Wist je dat Sam Feldt maar een artiestennaam is? Zijn echte naam is Sammy Renders, hij is geboren in 1993 in Nederland. Buiten muziek maken zet hij zich in voor de Heartfeldt Foundation, die duurzaamheidsprojecten steunt. Ook is hij een ambassadeur van de Vrijheid naar Johannesburg.
