Actually, they’re already here. And they’re called “manikins” in the healthcare simulation industry.
Before I get into the details of the many uses of manikins in the healthcare simulation industry, I’d like to take a time in this article to explain my own foray into blogging about healthcare simulation practices.
Even as a long-time user of the internet and advanced information technologies, I have generally avoided jumping into social media mainly due to my own biases. These biases were formed by my experiences with Facebook and from what I’ve heard about social media in the news. Naturally, these sources have been wrought with sensationalism, politics and misinformation. I’d like to establish a platform for civil dialog about healthcare simulation.
I am slowing coming around to see the benefits of using social media as a business and educational tool. For example, I’ve found that LinkedIn can be helpful in professional networking and even job hunting. You may take a look at my LinkedIn profile. Also, I attend professional conferences across the United States and they rely on social media apps to organize events and connect with participants. One annual conference is called SimGHOSTS. It is one of the largest annual conferences in the world. Another annual conference is called the SUN (Simulation User Network) Conference.
Another source of valuable information comes from the vendors themselves. Our lab uses a number of vendors for our manikins and systems. A few of these include:

Social media, when used strategically, can be very useful for promoting an industry, a particular institution and those involved in the healthcare simulation area. It can provides a means to educate and inform professionals, as well as the public, about topics relevant to their field. It can also be used to set apart a particular organization or individual in a growing field, providing brand recognition.
As social media rushes headlong into the public sphere, it becomes imperative for individuals and organizations to engage the public in a manner that is embraced by a new generation of consumers of information. I imagine that I will use blogs and other social media platforms more and more to connect to a growing field of interested parties and engage the public. In my field, everyone is a customer and a consumer of vital information about the healthcare simulation industry.
