apologies if you've received an ask about this / have made a post about it before (when i tried to search it up on your blog i first accidentally pasted in the entirety of my speech, but the second time i got it right and the only thing that showed up was the ask you answered about why healthcare is the way it is), but i'm very interested in learning about military medicine, specifically about its role in, as you said in the aforementioned ask, the creation of the hospital/clinic system—do you have any specific readings that would be a good introduction to it?
yes, although i should've phrased that more precisely: the first anon was asking about the current US medical system, and my argument is that a lot of what's characteristically "fascist" (as they put it) about it has throughlines to medical knowledge transfer in the 19th-century Atlantic world, & particularly the influence of what is (sort of incorrectly) termed 'Paris medicine'. so, this is not a universal claim about hospitals (eg, there's lots of scholarship on hospital medicine in the Ottoman Empire, which functioned differently and had different relationships to military medicine, &c &c)
anyway i would recommend for some broad introductions to this process:
Medicalizing Blackness: Making Racial Difference in the Atlantic World, 1780-1840, by Rana Hogarth (2017)
The Citizen-Patient in Revolutionary and Imperial Paris, by Dora Wiener (2002)
Maladies of Empire: How Colonialism, Slavery, and War Transformed Medicine, by Jim Downs (2021)
and, jumping a bit to the late 19th century and the origins of 'modern medicine' generally:
The Emergence of Tropical Medicine in France, by Michael Osborne (2014)
Imperial Bodies in London: Empire, Mobility, and the Making of British Medicine, 1880–1914, by Kristin Hussey (2021)
Pasteur's Empire: Bacteriology and Politics in France, Its Colonies, and the World, by Aro Velmet (2020)
Curing the Colonizers: Hydrotherapy, Climatology, and French Colonial Spas, by Eric T. Jennings (2006)

we have always been here: documentaries about trans people
documentaries about trans people, starting in the year 1953. I don't speak to filmic quality or whether or not something is problematic, what matters here is simply the testimony and the stamp of existence (including in those where the subject matter is spoken about, rather than getting to speak for themselves)
(I haven't seen every one of these yet, so some of them have slightly shorter texts to go along with them)
while (as you'll see) most of these are US-based movies, they are from all over the world. I'd be curious about whether there are any focused specifically on the intersection of transness and disability, I don't personally know of any, although of many speak to issues with access to healthcare (for example southern comfort)
all the ones that have links connected to them are watchable for free
some of these can be watched for free on the archive, youtube, vimeo, many could do with a few coins thrown their way: many of the movies, for example the the aggressives can be rented on vimeo, transgender tuesdays is free on youtube but accepting donations for trans women of colour, lotus sports club is doing festivals currently and is accepting donations to support the team and the vulnerable trans (now men) who have had to leave it to find work, call her ganda is accepting donations to support the family's legal costs in bringing justice for their daughter
remember, finding the stories that have been graciously shared is one thing, supporting our community is the next step
glen or glenda (1953): the first known movie about trans people, a mixed-media semi-fictional account (US)
the queen (1968) (US): following drag-queens at a national beauty pageant two years before stonewall, including footage of crystal labeija (US)

do you have similar recommendations to the duke gets even? historical romances with feminist themes? thank you 🙏
Hi! Sorry for the delay especially considering you asked this last week, but yeah, here are some of the historicals I particularly enjoyed:
A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera: Luz Alana is a Dominican rum heiress who's not only an innovator in the field, but she also wants to expand distribution of her family's rum, except obviously she faces hurdles because, men. There's also a lot of discussion of exactly where wealthy Europeans' money was coming on, and the ties between the aristocracy and colonialism, slavery, and exploitation.
An Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera: This sapphic romance did a really lovely job of showing that yes, queer people of color existed throughout history and particularly in Paris at this time. The book also makes a case for how intertwined capitalism and colonialism is, and by the end, Cora comes to the realization that maybe being one of the few women in a powerful position in a capitalist system isn't exactly the feminist win many still think it is.
A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera (out 2/5/25): I have to give Adriana Herrera props for the level of medical research she must have done because this book REALLY gets into the nitty-gritty of how women suffered (and still suffer!) when they did not have access to proper medical care, and the extent to which the patriarchy (husbands, fathers, law enforcement, etc.) prevents women from having this access. The heroine Aurora is a Black woman of Dominican-Mexican descent; she's one of the few qualified female doctors of the time, and she's LITERALLY putting her life and body on the line to help these women by setting up an underground women's clinic.
A Rose Blooms in Brooklyn by Ginny Moore: Another historical dealing with reproductive rights except in the United States around the turn of the century. The hero runs a women's shelter and was widowed after his late wife died during childbirth because they did not have access to contraception. And his shelter is based out of the poorer areas of Brooklyn, you really see how working class women and immigrant women suffer from the lack of reproductive healthcare access.
The Counterfeit Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath: I really like the level of specificity Lorraine Heath offers in a lot of her romances when it comes to less-discussed aspects of women's rights. In England, divorce was extremely difficult for women specifically to obtain, and the hero has a lot of guilt over his own mother, so he helps women by pretending to have affairs with them, and that way, their husbands can divorce them for adultery, a process that would be MUCH easier than wives trying to find cause to divorce their husbands.
The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite: A quieter, more introspective sapphic romance that hits on some issues that are pretty prevalent to this day; It intertwines themes of women’s intellectual labor being rejected or undervalued, but then traditional women’s work is ALSO undervalued. Lucy’s contributions to the astronomy field are repeatedly devalued by male scientists or used without credit, and Catherine’s embroidery isn’t “high art” and therefore not worth notice or artistic approval. You really can't win with the patriarchy, basically.
Temptations of a Wallflower by Eva Leigh: If you're looking for something lighter that takes on themes of censorship, specifically censoring sexual content geared towards women. The heroine secretly writes erotica under a pen name and inadvertently educates women through her writing, and the hero is charged by his powerful father to bring her down without knowing her true identity.
I do think Liana De la Rosa's Luna Sisters series gets into the intersectionality of the feminist movement but overall has stronger anti-racist, anti-imperialist themes. The sisters are all undervalued by their father, who is a high-ranking official in President Juarez's government-in-exile, and Isabel especially wants to make something of herself and offers to spy for the exiled First Lady of Mexico in order to fight the French occupation of Mexico. Ana Maria on the other hand takes the classic but historically undervalued route of being something of a political hostess, but using her power to advocate for her husband's progressive policies and anti-slavery bill.
The Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series by Grace Callaway: What I appreciate about this series is that the Society is willing to provide investigative services to women who are often turned away by male investigators and men in power. Also, there are significant subplots with multiple heroines who hide their jobs from their love interests because they're afraid they will make them stop. Ultimately, none of them do, which is actually quite progressive compared to the one Grace Callaway heroine from a previous gen who basically gave up her investigator ambitions after marriage.
There are a lot more historical romances that have more subtle feminist themes (ex: I was just thinking about Bed Me, Earl by Felicity Niven where the heroine realizes that none of the men in her life— her brother, her husband— bothered to tell her how shitty her husband's finances were before marrying him despite there being affection on BOTH their parts before marriage, but she's made to bear the brunt of those consequences anyway, and legally has no recourse or rights post-marriage. The nice thing is, the husband fully agrees to put his finances in her hands so she can fix them, and there is a rather hysterical "you're pulling out until our money situation is stable" sitch as a result) but I wanted to focus on ones that felt standout to me. I also have thoughts on historicals that use intersectionality as window dressing, basically, which you can read here.

Mary Putnam Jacobi
Firstly, I want to talk about Mary Putnam Jacobi, MD, born in 1842, who’s medical career was filled with many firsts. In a time before coeducation in medical school was wide spread, Mary fought for equal access to clinical experience in schooling and created the Association of Advancement of Medical Education of Women, dedicated to addressing commonplace inequalities at the time.
Her most renowned work involved a paper written to combat a male doctor’s misunderstanding of menstruation, where he claimed that exertion during a period could become dangerous. Her paper received an award from Harvard university- the Boylston Prize- and is testament to the importance of women in healthcare. She was the first woman to win this prize, as well as the first woman to study at l’École de Médecine in Paris, and the first woman to be accepted into New York Academy of Medicine.
In her dying days, she wrote a paper titled ‘Symptoms of the Meningeal Tumor Compressing the Cerebellum. From Which the Writer Died. Written by Herself.’ In 1993, her legacy was immortalised as she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
Thank you for reading! See you tomorrow!!

WTF Scotland?
A prisoner who identifies as transgender is requesting taxpayer-funded “gender affirming care” through the National Healthcare System (NHS) in Scotland. Paris Green, 30, whose birth name is Peter Laing, is currently being held in the women’s section of Edinburgh’s Saughton jail, where he is serving a life sentence for murder.
Green is seeking to become the first prisoner in the United Kingdom to have the full procedure euphemistically referred to as ‘sex reassignment surgery’ on the public dime.
In 2013, Green was one of three men found guilty for the torture and murder of 45-year-old Robert Shankland.
Green, along with two other men had invited Shankland, 45, to a party at Green’s residence in Glenrothes, Fife, in March of 2013. Once Shankland arrived, the men tied him up, then beat and tortured him for seven hours. Shankland was also sexually assaulted him with a rolling pin before he died as a result of either suffocation or blunt force injuries. The three killers then sold Shankland’s mobile phone for £26 and spent the money on sandwiches, which they ate at the scene of the crime as Shankland took his final breaths.
When sentencing the trio at the High Court in Glasgow, Judge John Morris called the crime “utterly depraved,” stating: “This was a particularly gruesome murder which effectively involved the torture of your victim over many hours. It beggars belief that you could act towards another human being in this way.”
Upon conviction, Green was initially detained at Cornton Vale women’s prison, but was transferred to the women’s ward in Edinburgh after only five weeks in detention because he repeatedly engaged in sexual relations with the female inmates.
Speaking to the Daily Record from jail, Green said that he regretted committing the “inexcusable” crime and insisted that undergoing genital surgery would help him become rehabilitated. He blamed his “anger” over his identity for his violent actions and said he felt disgusted by his genitals.
“Nothing is more important to me than becoming fully the person I should have been. I want to feel comfortable in the shower rather than feeling repulsed. Having male genitalia feels wrong.”
When asked why he had committed the brutal murder, he said: “It was inexcusable – all I can say is I had a really awful childhood and was totally messed up. I was carrying a lot of anger inside me even before I realized I should have been a woman and that made me more angry.”
Green initially began taking hormones in 2011, and met with a surgeon at Nuffield Clinic in Brighton in 2020. But the medical professional delayed the procedure after expressing concern for the safety of other patients on the ward due to the nature of Green’s sadistic crime
Shankland’s family members have for several years campaigned against Green being housed with women, as well as being permitted to receive state-funded medical interventions. In 2018, the estimated cost to taxpayers for Green’s surgery was said to be approximately £20,000. Over the past decade, relatives of the victim have launched petitions and contacted representatives to state their case.
One petition, created by Leigh Robb, states: “My uncle Robert was brutally murdered by three people who were all sentenced to a minimum of 18 years. Problem is that one of his murderers is a man who likes to be known as a woman ‘Paris’. This man is set to undergo full gender realignment on the NHS payed [sic] for by us tax payers. He should not be rewarded for this brutal crime and should serve his time in a man’s prison. Please help me get some justice for my uncle and our family.”
Family members spoke with The Daily Mail in 2018, detailing their objections to Green’s placement in a woman’s prison and to his potential surgery. Pauline Bell, Shankland’s sister, said, “[He] should not be getting the operation on the NHS. It’s not lifesaving treatment. [He] took somebody’s life away and destroyed a family.”
Shankland’s mother, Mary, told the press, “Green doesn’t know the meaning of the word remorse. [He] shouldn’t get the operation, especially when so many people need vital treatment on the NHS – and they’re not getting it. But the authorities are jumping through hoops for him.”
Shankland’s family also set up a Facebook page, Justice for Robert Shankland, where they shared updates and attempted to gain support for their efforts.
On one post from 2013, a woman who claims to have been housed in Cornton Vale with Green during the five-week period he was held there commented in support of the victim’s family, saying that the convicted murderer told her how he had committed the grotesque slaying. She also claimed that Green threatened to kill himself should he be sentenced to life in prison.
Using a mixture of both masculine and feminine pronouns, she said that Green was “vile to the core” and that he selectively took hormones, like a “game” he was playing with the staff at the women’s prison. “It’s always going to be [a] game to Paris. I can’t ever forget. I hate [him] with a passion,” the former inmate wrote.
Another former prisoner detained with Green similarly remarked: “When I first went in [he] looked, talked and acted like a woman. But [he] had a spell where [his] behavior changed. It seemed [he] was having doubts, had stopped taking the hormones and was growing facial hair again. [He] was also sexually active and everyone knew about it. [He] had at least one girlfriend.’
Still another anonymous insider told the media that Green was notorious for having sexual relations with female inmates, adding: “He didn’t seem to be acting much like a woman to me.”
At the end of January, following a slew of violent male criminals claiming to identify as women and some requesting housing in the women’s estate, the UK Ministry of Justice updated its transgender prisoner policy. The new framework restricts male inmates with intact genitalia, or those who have been convicted of a sexual offense, from being placed in women’s prisons. In February, the Scottish Prison Service confirmed that newly convicted or remanded prison inmates will initially be placed in jails according to their sex at birth.
Speaking with the Daily Record, Dr. Kate Coleman of the campaign group Keep Prisons Single Sex, said, “Green, who is serving a sentence for torture and murder, would, under the new Ministry of Justice policy, be held in the male estate. We hope the SPS [Scottish Prison Service] will similarly place the safety of women at the center of their revised policy when the policy is finally released.”
A report from The Times in 2018 revealed that a senior official of the Scottish Prison Service, Gordon Pike, who was one of those responsible for its “gender identity and gender reassignment policy,” would turn out to be a sex offender himself, having hoarded 22,000 indecent pictures of children.

Ozempic Weight Loss
Is Ozempic Prescription Right for You? Exploring Its Weight Loss Potential
In recent years, Ozempic (semaglutide) has gained attention not only for its effectiveness in managing diabetes but also for its potential to aid weight loss. Ozempic prescription medication has shown promising results in clinical trials, leading many to wonder if it could be the solution they've been seeking to shed excess pounds.
Let's delve into the details to understand whether Ozempic might be suitable for you as a weight loss treatment.
Understanding Ozempic
Ozempic is an injectable medication belonging to a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Originally developed to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, Ozempic works by mimicking the function of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).
This hormone helps regulate insulin secretion, suppresses appetite, and slows gastric emptying.
Clinical Trials and Weight Loss
During clinical trials focusing on diabetes management, researchers observed that Ozempic consistently led to weight loss in participants.
This unintended yet beneficial effect sparked further investigation into its potential as a weight loss aid.
Subsequent trials targeting weight loss have demonstrated significant reductions in body weight among participants using Ozempic.
Effectiveness in Weight Loss
Studies have shown that Ozempic can result in substantial weight loss when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Some individuals experienced weight reductions of 5% or more of their initial body weight.
This is a notable achievement, particularly for those struggling with obesity and related health issues.
Who Might Benefit?
Ozempic could be an option for individuals who are overweight or obese and have struggled to lose weight through conventional methods such as diet and exercise alone.
It may be particularly beneficial for those with underlying conditions like insulin resistance or prediabetes.
However, it's essential to consult a healthcare provider to determine if Ozempic weight loss medication is suitable for your specific circumstances.
Considerations and Precautions
Before considering Ozempic for weight loss, it's crucial to understand potential considerations and precautions. Like any medication, Ozempic may cause side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, or pancreatitis.
Additionally, it's crucial to discuss existing health conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors with a healthcare professional.
Consultation with a Healthcare Provider
Deciding whether Ozempic is right for you requires a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider.
They can assess your medical history, current health status, and weight loss goals to determine if Ozempic is a viable option. Together, you can discuss potential benefits, risks, and alternatives to make an informed decision.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ozempic shows promise as a weight loss treatment for individuals struggling with obesity or excess weight.
Its effectiveness in reducing body weight, combined with its primary role in diabetes management, makes it an intriguing option for those seeking to improve their health and quality of life.
However, the decision to use Ozempic should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized guidance based on individual health needs and considerations.

Breathe SmartTackling Air Pollution and Respiratory Health
Breathe Cities is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at accelerating progress, dismantling barriers to action, and ensuring global access to clean air. Announced by Michael R. Bloomberg, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Vision and Solutions and the founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, together with London Mayor and C40 Chair Sadiq Khan, this effort intends to tackle urban air pollution.
Currently, no urban area meets the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines. Alarmingly, 41% of cities have air pollution levels exceeding WHO recommendations by over seven times, exposing residents to hazardous air that can lead to severe health issues such as asthma, respiratory illnesses, and other chest diseases.
The $30 million Breathe Cities initiative is a collaborative effort between Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Clean Air Fund, and C40 Cities, aiming to mitigate air pollution detrimental to public health and the climate. This initiative extends the work supported by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
To support this mission, funding, technical support, air quality data, community engagement, capacity building, and more will be provided to a selected group of cities to be announced later this year. Breathe Cities is based on four key concepts.:
Data and Research: Enhancing local air quality data availability using innovative technologies and research into air pollution sources to equip local governments with evidence for policy implementation and enforcement.
Stakeholder and Community Engagement: Mobilizing local campaigns and grassroots organizers to raise awareness and support for air quality initiatives, especially in communities most impacted by air pollution.
Technical Policy Assistance: Providing technical assistance and capacity building to local governments and city halls, aiding policymakers in developing and executing effective clean air policies.
Lesson Sharing: Facilitating knowledge exchange across cities to inspire and enable other cities to take action.
Clean air is essential for everyone to live, grow, and thrive. Jane Burston, Executive Director of the Clean Air Fund, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, highlighting the collective empowerment of cities to improve air quality and address a significant public health issue. By advancing local action, leveraging new data and technologies, and fostering community cohesion, Breathe Cities aims to ensure a future where everyone can breathe clean air.
Breathe Cities builds on the existing efforts of Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Clean Air Fund in cities like Brussels, Jakarta, London, Milan, Paris, and Warsaw. These efforts include tracking air pollution, shaping public advocacy, and implementing policy measures to reduce pollution. Additionally, C40 Cities has been instrumental in increasing global commitments to clean air, supporting mayors in executing ambitious air quality actions, and creating forums for sharing solutions.
Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah CBE, WHO advocate for health and air quality, and founder of the Ella Roberta Family Foundation, underscores the life-and-death stakes of air quality. Millions suffer from asthma, cancer, autoimmune diseases, miscarriages, and other noncommunicable diseases due to polluted air. While progress has been made in cities like London, this new initiative aims to extend the benefits to cities worldwide, recognizing clean air as a fundamental right and a social justice issue.
In addressing air pollution, it is crucial to consult with healthcare professionals, such as a chest care clinic or chest physician and pulmonologist, for accurate diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases. Pulmonologists are specialists in diagnosing and treating respiratory conditions, utilizing procedures like bronchoscopy to examine the airways. For those seeking immediate medical attention, a walk-in clinic near me can provide prompt care. Additionally, pediatricians and chest consultants play a vital role in managing respiratory health in children through regular immunization and monitoring.
Whether you need a pulmonologist and chest specialist or a doctor for chest disease, it is important to find the right chest specialist or pediatrician near me to ensure comprehensive care. For those seeking specialized care, a chest pulmonologist or doctor of pulmonology can offer advanced treatment options. Remember, clean air is vital for everyone, and access to specialized healthcare professionals is essential for maintaining respiratory health.
