How Could You Prevent the Most Common Causes of Workplace Injuries?
Tumblr media
Employee safety is one of the most important factors to take into account when assessing different workplaces.
Some of the most common non-fatal causes of workplace injuries are slips, trips, and falls, which accounted for 32% of injuries (2022/23).
Slips, trips, and falls can occur in any workplace, from office buildings and retail stores to construction sites and manufacturing facilities.
These accidents often result from a combination of environmental factors and human behaviour.
Read on to learn more about these common causes of workplace injuries and how these can be prevented.
What common causes of workplace injuries can contribute to slips, trips, and falls?
1. Wet or slippery surfaces:
Spills, leaks and wet weather conditions can create slippery surfaces that increase the risk of slips and falls.
2. Uneven or cluttered walkways:
Objects left in walkways, uneven flooring, and inadequate lighting, reducing vision, can all contribute to trips and falls.
3. Poor housekeeping:

Failure to clean up spills promptly, cluttered work areas, and neglected maintenance can create hazardous conditions.
4. Lack of proper footwear:
Inappropriate footwear or worn-out shoes with inadequate grip can increase the risk of slipping and falling.
5. Lack of safety equipment:
Failure to provide or use appropriate safety equipment, such as handrails, guardrails, and fall protection gear, can lead to falls from heights.
6. The solution to these accidents…
Preventing slips, trips, and falls requires a proactive approach that addresses both environmental hazards and employee behaviour.
Here are some effective strategies for preventing these common causes of workplace injuries:
1. Effective training
Especially within the workplace, training stands out as one of the paramount elements in reducing workplace accidents.
Tumblr media
Alongside this, training must be regularly updated to reinforce this knowledge, particularly with repetitive tasks.
Keeping things refreshed means it keeps individuals engaged and more likely to remember and take on these training skills to help create a safer work environment.
2. Clear safety signage
Employers must show clear safety signs where there’s an obvious risk that cannot be mitigated in other ways.
It’s important to maintain these signs to uphold their purpose consistently, and they should be positioned well for optimal visibility.
The colour scheme of each sign must correspond to its intended message. For instance, red signs are for prohibitions, blue signifies mandatory actions, and so on.
3. Classify your zones
Another way to reduce the causes of workplace injuries is zoning your workspace, which is especially beneficial for industries operating in hazardous areas.
If there is any risk of explosives, the space must comply with ATEX zone classifications.
Zones are crucial in any warehouse setting to enhance efficiency and appropriately manage hazards and risks.
Regular risk assessments are necessary to accurately classify and manage these zones.
4. Anti-slip matting
Slips, trips, and falls are the most frequent workplace injuries, anti-slip matting, anti-slip tape, and stair treads can help prevent these incidents.
Additionally, proper entrance matting before you even enter the office helps to maintain a clean and safe working environment by reducing the likelihood of water or mud being tracked indoors.
5. Maintain a tidy work area
Tumblr media
Having a spill-cleaning kit is essential for promptly managing spills and leaks.
Alongside this, you can help reduce common workplace accidents by removing obstacles, covering cables, marking uneven surfaces, and using shadow boards to organise and store equipment.
It’s clear that there are so many ways to prevent common causes of workplace injuries, and by using some of these solutions, your business can strive towards a safer working environment for all.

#Repost @intensive.energy ... Hazard identification is part of the process used to evaluate if any particular situation, item, thing may have potential to cause harm. The objective of hazard identification is to find and record possible hazards that may be present in your workplace. It may help to work as a team and include both people familiar with the work area, as well as people who are not. #safety #workplacehazards #hazardidentification #iesb https://www.instagram.com/p/CQxr_AIpFtd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Every owner and contractor is familiar with the insurance coverage andcertificates needed for a construction project. In construction, coverage andpolicies can take many forms, such as builder's risk insurance which protectsthe named insured from certain named perils while the building is beingconstructed (e.g. fire, lightning, vandalism) or general liability insurancewhich protects against bodily injuries or property damage. Perhaps the mostwell known, however, is workers' compensation insurance, which provides wagereplacement and medical benefits to employees injured on the job. Workers' compensation is a no-fault system, meaning benefits are providedwithout needing to determine who was at fault in the situation. It was designedto protect both workers and employees and streamline the benefits process so aninjured worker can receive wage or medical benefits while recovering from aninjury. What is an EMR? An EMR or experience modification rating (also called a MOD rating or factor)is used to price workers' compensation insurance premiums. Think of it likeyour credit score or car driving history, where third parties consider yourhistory as an indication of future risk. In construction, insurance companiesuse an organization's EMR to gauge the past cost of injuries and future chancesof risk. The average EMR, or the point at which your company is said to be no more or noless risky than another, is 1.0. If your EMR dips below 1.0, your company isconsidered safer than most, which translates to lower premiums. Forcontractors, an EMR score can be critical, as some owners have EMR standards orpre-qualification processes for their projects and will only work withcontractors with an EMR below 1.0 or some other "safe" threshold. On the otherhand, if your EMR climbs above 1.0, your company is considered riskier thanmost, and you may be prevented from bidding on projects or have difficultysecuring skilled labor. An EMR of 1.2, for example, can mean that yourinsurance premiums could be up to 20% higher than a company with an EMR of 1.0,and that 20% difference must be passed on to clients in the form of increasebid prices. Determining your EMR Your EMR is based on actual insurance and workers' compensation claims thathave been reported to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI)over the course of the last five years, although the agency only uses claimsinformation from three years prior. If your policy renews on January 1, 2019,for example, then the calculating agency will look at claims from 2015, 2016,and 2017. In addition, each individual claim is analyzed using a highlydetailed EMR worksheet that weighs factors including type of incident andmonetary value of claims paid out. Some other modifiers that can affect your EMR include the size of your payroll, which can translate to a higher EMR for smaller contractors simply because ofthe size of their workforce. Boosting Your EMR Contractors have options for improving (i.e. reducing) their EMR and reducingtheir premiums, starting with effective safety training, risk and hazardidentification, and on-going safety discussions. No injuries equals no claims. The rise of safety technologies is also helping contractors stay ahead of thecurve by providing standard, digital information on incidents on a jobsite. Here are some things to keep in mind: Meet with workers regularly to discuss jobsite safety. It's essential that yourorganization does not get complacent when it comes to safety. A near-miss, forexample, does not mean that your organization has effective safety practicesthat prevented an incident from occurring but rather that you were lucky. Eachclose call is an opportunity to take stock, gather your project crews, anddevelop more tailored safety programs. Implement stretch-and-flex "huddles" onthe jobsite each morning and use that time as an opportunity to reinforce keysafety messages and practices. Adopting safety technologies at the jobsite. Solutions like Spot-r weredesigned with safety and risk management in mind. By notifying designatedpersonnel to safety incidents as they occur, contractors can improve injuryresponse time and reduce the risk of compounding injuries. In addition, theSpot-r EvacTag helps reduce evacuation drill time by up to 72% with a 100-decibel, flashing light alarm that overcomes language barriers. Bystrengthening existing evacuation procedures, contractors can minimize therisks-- and potential claims-- that can arise in an emergency situation. Develop return-to-work programs that help workers recover and return to thejobsite. A return-to-work program allows injured, sick, or disabled workers toreturn to their jobs as soon as they are released by their physicians. Theseprograms are company- and job-specific, and they often entail modification of aworker's original job duties to keep him or her working until he or she canreturn to the original job. These programs help construction companies savemoney by reducing the cost of disability claims and cutting out the trainingtime and costs associated with hiring new employees. When employees can returnto their original wages more quickly, they no longer rely on their disabilitypayments. What's more, workers who remain on the job-- even in differentpositions to accommodate their needs-- keep their skills up-to-date. It's important to know how workers' compensation insurance works and how yourEMR is determined, as it can crucially affect who wants to work with-- or for--you and whether you're allowed to bid on a project. As IoT-enabled solutionsbecome widespread at the jobsite, it's important to learn the new toolsavailable to improve risk management, lower injury frequency and severity andultimately lower your EMR and insurance premiums. Knowledge is power, so usedata-- and all the tools at your disposal-- to improve and refine your safetypractices and keep your workers as safe as possible.
