It had become their spot, this abandoned dock that no one frequented. Sometimes she brought the booze and sometimes he did, or on days when things were particularly bad they both showed up with a bottle.

Today was one of those days.

Siobhan lowered herself to the half-rotted planks with a groan, kicking her boots aside so that she could dip her toes in the murky shallows lapping out of the cove. At her side, Loghain grunted, hand wrapped loosely around a bottle of whiskey almost half-gone. His grip tightened slightly as Siobhan settled in with a sigh.

"Don't worry," she smirked, pulling a paper-wrapped bottle into view. "I brought my own."

Loghain huffed, bringing his bottle to his lips. "It's just like that today, I suppose."

"Maker, it is."

They sat in companionable silence as the sun slunk down below the horizon. Finally, as dusk overtook the docks, Siobhan pressed herself firmly against Loghain's side and leaned back on her palms.

"So. Why are you drinking tonight?" she asked, head tipped back to look up at the stars. Loghain stole a glance sideways, lingering when she made no attempt to meet it. Her cheeks were wine-flushed, her eyes glittering in the moonlight. Her hair was mussed, as was the fur that adorned her neck, both a victim of her carding fingers.

"I spent the day in the alienage," he finally answered, a low, regret-filled rumble. He glanced away as she canted her head to look at him and brought his bottle back to his lips.

"So Merrill told me."

"Oh?" Loghain huffed, almost a hiccup, cleverly concealed against the lip of his whiskey bottle. He pressed his lips together, holding his breath until he trusted himself to speak evenly. "I'm surprised you came here, even so."

Siobhan swung her legs up onto the dock, tiny droplets of water staining the sun-dried planks. She sat crosslegged and stared directly at him, so there was no escaping her scrutiny except by taking another drink.

"Dwelling, then? That's as good a reason as I've ever heard for drinking."

Loghain closed his eyes, ran his teeth over gritty teeth. His regrets from the Blight were numerous, beyond counting. The Warden-Commander had told him to cease lingering on what he could not change.

None of us will ever forgive you, Tabris had said. You cannot live for that. Find a way to live for yourself.

Pretty words. But some days it was hard.

"I know what happened in Denerim, if that's what you're chewing on," Siobhan said casually, tearing at the paper that still encased her wine. "Not much worse you could have done to the alienage, from what I hear."

"No," Loghain grumbled. "There isn't. I thought differently at the time but--I was wrong."

Siobhan smirked, a caustic, cynical expression sharp enough to kill any of the bandits starting to awaken in the shadows. "Aren't we all, at one time or another."

"How can you be so calm?" Loghain challenged. He set his bottle aside with a pointed clink and it wobbled, not enough liquid left in it to immediately stabilize. "You count elves among your friends, the former slave well known for his hatred of Tevinter hunters."

"This is a very good wine," Siobhan offered. "And Fenris is out of town."

Loghain finally caught her cracked-marble eyes and all of the challenge they held within. He opened his mouth to decry her dismissal of his failures--then closed it again, unsure.

"You sold Ferelden citizens into slavery?" Siobhan said, a question that didn't sound questioning at all. "Well, I gave control of the city to a red-lyrium-crazed lunatic and murdered one of my closest friends in a fit of anger. Let's see which of us history remembers as a hero, hm?"

"Neither of us, if we're lucky."

"I'll drink to that," Siobhon snorted, raising her bottle to clink against the last of his whiskey. "I'll drink to that."

Gloria 'Ria' Hawke exists thanks to a gift exchange last winter which gave me glorious (pun intended) Hawke/Loghain brainrot. I fell so hard for this Hawke that I started a Dragon Age 2 playthrough to get to know her better.

But I wouldn't have been able to embark on this journey without @judithmactir's incredible prompts as inspiration. <3 The resulting fic depicts highlights across a decade of Ria's life from before Dragon Age 2 to during Inquisition.

Warrior Gloria 'Ria' Hawke never asked for a lot of things thrown at her in this life. She doesn't like most of them. But meeting Loghain Mac Tir is one of the few for which she's grateful. And for the kinship with him that eventually becomes something more.

Gloria. What were her parents thinking when they chose that for her? It was too fanciful compared to perfectly serviceable names like Bethany or even Carver. ‘Ria’ fit much better.

So of course Carver called her ‘Gloria’ anytime he found himself losing one of their sparring matches. It wasn’t her fault she could shield bash better than him.

But something felt different this time. More than bitterness laced his tone as he lashed out at her. Perhaps the rumors of a threat to their south—one unrelated to Orlais—had him on edge. Worse than usual, that is.

Thanks to an afternoon downpour preventing escape to the woods, Ria ends up seeking solace among the bookshelves in the Chantry. But not in the boring section where the sisters lurked, with their constant murmurings of Chant of Light this and Andraste that. No, in the realm of stories, stories that actually happened, stories of past Ages and battles and dragons.

Something about her argument with her brother drives her to a well-worn tome, the page edges wrinkled by the passage of time and touch of many fingers. Mostly her own. This book covers the tale of Loghain Mac Tir’s rise from humble birth as a farmer’s son to the Hero of River Dane, a trajectory that drove her swordplay, a trajectory she occasionally wishes she could follow—

“Ria. Knew I’d find you here.”

She glances up. Mud from their own battle still smears Carver’s left cheek despite the rain. “Why did you bother looking?” she snarls, her tone harsher than intended.

“I…” He visibly swallows. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For yelling at you. When I was mad at myself.”

She blinks. “You don’t usually apologize this quickly.”

“Well, I needed to say that before I shared the news.”

“News? What news?”

“The threat to the south is worse than we realized. King Cailan is mustering an army. I’m joining. I figured you’d be interested too.”

A chance to do something. Something that matters. Of course she’ll take it.

Seemed to care a great deal about you, from what I could tell on our way to the Western Approach. I’m no good at this, but you have my sympathy. I lost a sister and mother, myself. Father and brother too before them.”

“I have no need of your sympathy,” Morrigan snapped. She formed a fist around Adalla’s lead. “Why must men always pollute the air with their useless placations? No, save your words.”

Hawke did not seem troubled in the least. “As you wish,” was his only reply.

1. The first character I first fell in love with: Zevran or Morrigan. I don't remember which.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Cassandra <3

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t : I'm putting a target on my head, because I know that most all of my friends played them but. Cousland. Like, I get why people like playing them but lord they're boring.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates : Loghain.

5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer : Hm. Maybe Alistair? I don't dislike him at all! I just wouldn't romance him.

6. The character I would totally smooch : It'd be boring to just say Morrigan or Zev, so I will say Sten or Orsino. I loved Orsino.

7. The character I’d want to be like : Bro, I don't think I wanna be like any of those nasty lil' freaks. They are disasters. Maybe Varric. Varric seems like he's doing alright.

8. The character I’d slap : If I see Meredith or Corypheus, it's on sight. They're catching hands.

1. The first character I first fell in love with: It was Astarion or Zevlor, way back in early access. Unless we are saying that it's Baldur's Gate on the whole, as a series. If that's the case, it's Jaheira. Been in love with her since I was 14.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Shadowheart. Day one in early access, she and I were not on good terms. Now, she is wife.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Gale. He's just alright.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates : Orin.

5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer : Maybe Gortash? I still like him a lot. But it's tempered a little bit. BUT I STILL LIKE HIM SO MUCH, DON'T COME AFTER ME.

6. The character I would totally smooch : Listen. Raphael, Haarlep, Jaheira. Probably Shadowheart. Jaheira.

7. The character I’d want to be like : Is it weird to say Jaheira? Nine-fingers maybe?

started thinking about what worldstate i wanna create for my first run in veilguard because of course i have.

we can't import past saves and we won't be using the keep anymore, so I'm not sure how detailed we'll be able to get with it but I've got a few possibilities to play with:

the first and most likely is my mostly canon-compliant worldstate with these bbs:

the second is my slightly less canon-compliant worldstate that i never brought into inquisition because i didn't want to have to choose between alistair and my favorite hawke in the fade lmao:

rhiannon hawke [force & elemental mage] champion of kirkwall / temp viscount of kirkwall / li: cullen or fenris*

*last summer i did replay da2 with an iteration of rhiannon that actually romanced fenris and i loved it and I've complicated shit for her, lmao. rhiannon x cullen were my goro x valerie of 2013-2014 and making her officially with someone else feels wrong bc i loved them together so much. but i just can't enjoy cullen anymore. so do i do i give rhiannon a boyfriend upgrade? do i make a whole 'nother hawke inspired by her? do i just let rhiannon x cullen and rhiannon x fenris exist in different AUs? i don't know!

and the third is kind of the opposite of the second one: a worldstate i made just for inquisition in the keep with some choices i had never made in the previous games. i don't even have the worldstate in the keep anymore so i don't remember everything but i think it was like this:

default m!hawke [mage] li: anders / sided with mages

keagan trevelyan [mage; knight-enchanter] herald of andraste / inquisitor / li: cullen (although i headcanoned a polycule with her, cullen, and josie)

one of my conundrums with all of these is, as i mentioned, i can't enjoy cullen anymore. he was obviously a big fave, i think his arc is fascinating especially in da2 and especially if you side with the templars and he has to contend with the shit he's done for meredith, and i enjoyed all the different shipping dynamics with all different kinds of ocs. but i can't separate him from his dipshit VA at this point. hearing his voice is just an instant NOPE for me now

i am 99% positive cullen will not be in veilguard for 2 reasons: 1) the writers said during inquisition that they were no longer trying to work in characters whose fates could be too varied depending on player choice and 2) that twitter shitstorm a few years seemed to guarantee ellis will never work with bioware again lmao

now i suppose there's a possibility that ellis could have recorded lines before that happened and somehow they would be able to be used despite all the changes that happened, but I'm trying to be an optimist here

nevertheless, all of the inquisitors i played were with him, and it sounds like we'll be able to engage with our inquisitors in some capacity in veilguard so do i even want to have a passing mention of cullen? idk. i mean, my disdain for his VA isn't so bad that this would ruin the game for me or anything, but i also feel like this is an opportunity to enjoy another character

between keagan and melisande, melisande was definitely my more developed OC, but i just loved playing as a knight-enchanter gameplay-wise so keagan is actually the only one of the two who did trespasser and jaws of hakkon. i never did the descent--the only DLC in all the games that i haven't played. I've been debating firing up my inquisitor!valerie game again to play that with her but i know the descent recommends a pretty high level and i can't remember how far i got in the story with her (I think i just reached skyhold that last time i played)

so anyway, i've got some decisions to make!

as for what i'm leaning towards playing in veilguard: at this point in time, i'm pretty sure my first rook will be a mage of some kind and lucanis sounds like he was made specifically for me lmao so odds are looking good that'll be my first ship

A fire crackled in the estate for the first time in months. Most of the rooms stood dark and empty, dusty and untouched in Bodahn’s absence, but if Siobhan closed her eyes and didn’t think beyond the living room, things were almost as they were.

Except they weren’t.

Their discarded armor formed a heap near Rinn’s curled up form. There was little for the mabari to keep guard over these days, but he held his watch nonetheless.

Siobhan tucked her nose into Loghain’s loosened tunic. It was grimy from the day’s wear but warmed by the fire and it smelled of polish and smoke and him. She was not above suffering to preserve a memory of pleasure. There were always harder days ahead and she would need the comfort. That was not in question.

His arms encircled her, stroking up and down her shoulder blades almost absentmindedly. She could almost lose herself in the sensation. But the moment had never captivated her, not when there was something beyond it.

“Do you ever wish” —she hesitated, feeling childish and naive— “do you ever wish I was…different? Not” —she gestured about the estate with one heavy hand— “this?”

“No.” Loghain’s answer was immediate, steady, even as she doubted it. His embrace tightened around her and one hand found her chin, guiding her to look up at him. Their lips were barely a whisper apart; she could see clearly the divot between his brows, the displeasure in his eyes.

“Have I given you reason to believe such?”

“No.” Siobhan held his gaze so he would not doubt. “I just…I—there is so much. It would be easier, perhaps, if I was not a mage, or not in Kirkwall, or not important.”

“Nothing easy has ever brought me pleasure,” Loghain countered. He nudged his nose against hers, not shying away from her stare.

Or pain. But neither of them raised that point.

It had been so long since she doubted herself. It had been so long since she had something worth acknowledging doubt. But—might she change how she was, if it would keep him here? If it would keep them together for a few minutes longer?

But she wouldn’t be his if she questioned. She wouldn’t be hers if she questioned. Siobhan sighed into his chest, fingers tangling in the ends of his unwashed hair.

So little time remained. She didn’t know what was coming, but she could feel it just beyond her reach, just as she knew that he would leave, and she would face it when he did.

“Do you wish I was different?”

She didn’t expect the question turned on it’s head, and her uncharacteristic silence in its wake showed it. The constant stroking of his fingers down her spine showed that he knew she would need a moment and she couldn’t decide if that set her at ease or on edge.

“What is there to change?” she finally murmured, tucking her head under his chin. At that vantage point, she heard his derisive snort.

“I nearly wiped out your homeland, ordered a bounty on the rightful king, almost brought the world to its knees with pride and obstinacy alone. What isn’t there to change?”

“We’ve all endured the horrors,” she sighed. “Would you change what you’ve done?”

“No.”

“Then neither would I.”

He pressed a kiss curved in a smile to her crown. “And neither would I, for you.”

“I hate it when you do that,” she muttered, but she smiled nonetheless, her conscience soothed in the moment. They were mirrors, cracked and fogged and scarred in their reflections, but their very nature turned back on the other.

“You love to hate it.”

She snorted derisively. “And what a fool I am for it.”

In the fade loghain for the amgst, emrys hawke loves his wife for that sweet Merrill love <3

Thank youuuu 🥺 ‘in the fade loghain’ is exactly as it sounds, Loghain’s inner narrative as he navigates the Fade with Virelan Lavellan and slowly just feels more and more full of fear and despair. It’s like that nook in the Fade was crafted purely to torture him, with its focus on fears born from the Blight, and he falls prey to it in the end.

As for how Emrys loves his wife, it is just a wee snippet of a dadwc idea that miiiiight get used eventually? This is it in its entirety lol:

Emrys Hawke loves his wife.

He’s never been more sure of this than he is now, covered in the blood of his enemies as she draws more of her own. Her magic hums around him — safe, we’re safe — as she burns and scorches and twists reality against their opponents. Her cry of “enasalin!” has never been more welcome than it is when the last one falls.

Emrys drags his dagger from the chest of one of the mutated creatures, then tips it over with his booted toe. He feels the warmth of Merrill beside him and instinctively puts his arm out — she tucks beneath it with a hum. Her hand is clenched over her forearm, and blood seeps slowly from between her fingers.

“Not too deep?” Emrys asks in a gruff voice.

Merrill has learned the tones of his voice by now. She knows that this means love and concern, not doubt of her capabilities — he knows she knows when she looks up at him with a broad smile.

Re: rarepair Hell. I would like to know how many pits we mutually occupy, so. Could I get a list of like, idk, your top ten (based in enjoyment level) rarepairs? And/or headcanons but I would prefer "and".

okay i'll assume you mean dragon age specifically MFDSKJFSDKJF but okay, i'll list some!!!!

the obvious ones:

fenders (fenris x anders) : i love a good narrative foil

zevistair (zevran x alistair) : idk if this counts as a rarepair but!!! their canon flirting banters always make me go sooo insane. that you can include zevran in the foursome w alistair if alistair is hardened (lol) makes me INSANE. they are basically canon aND YET!!!!!!

warden x loghain : ive written so much abt them already. you get the idea

nanders (nathaniel x anders)

the less obvious ones:

anders/merrill (bonus: anders/merrill/isabela): for all the same reasons i ship fenders (which i would argue is still relatively a popular pair, so not quite rarepair??); they're such good mirrors, they're both encapsulate what the other fears. anders being 100% okay to hurt people despite being a healer vs merrill being a blood mage who has never wanted to hurt anyone is just *chef kiss*. you can take a look at this for more compelling reasons to ship them.

fenris/merrill: for all the same reasons as above. i think if u dont ship each individual LI of the kirkwall polycule w each other, u shouldnt say u ship the kirkwall polycule.

solavelyan / soladaar / soladash / solas x non-lavellan inqs: i still think it should've been a romance option for all inqs tho i suppose they didn't really have the time to develop a non-lavellan route for them, but i love thinking about it, and i love the vibes for it so much. again, i love narrative foils, and i think it's so natural to be drawn to someone who could understand you like that.

alistair x bethany: a not-templar and a not-circle mage, in the wardens together. i think they'd really like each other and have a very interesting kind of energy!!! they've both got these secret bitter/spiteful sides to them, there's a lot of parallels (like alistair thinking warden conscription is a good thing bc it was for him and bethany having v different emotions abt being a warden in general). i've also really enjoyed most of the fics i've read for them.

nathaniel x f!cousland: UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH i dont think i've been able to find the kind of fic i want for them in the tag. i've got too many wips as it is, but maybe one day i'll write the nathaniel/f!cousland fic of my dreams...

nathaniel x anora: this one is admittedly @rosella-writes' fault, but they've got me by the THROAT as a concept

m!hawke/cullen: LIKE ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ONE-SIDED FOR CULLEN it's something that can be SO fascinating to explore (esp in an amell worldstate). [shaking cullen] babygirl what is WRONG with you!!!!!!!

m!hawke/sebastian: sebastian grappling with his admiration for hawke vs his chantry vows but THIS TIME make it mlm..... i think this is probably baby vee coming through w how hard i used to ship d/estiel in the early 00's LMAO. fsr they hit the same beats in my skull.

morrigan/leliana: noooo girlies don't fight haha <3 they should dump the warden and kiss instead <3

josephine/the iron bull: i read a few fics for them that admittedly captured my interest. i think their dynamic is something that could really be interesting to delve into for so many reasons. i've read the evidence and i find it compelling enough to put on this list
