Maui Steel Guitar Festival | 10th Annual Celebration
Maui Steel Guitar Festival
April 13, 2018 – April 15, 2018
  The 10th Annual Maui Steel Guitar Festival will be held on April 13-14, 2018, at Kaanapali Beach Hotel, located at 2525 Kaanapali Pkwy, Lahaina HI from 10 am to 8:30 pm, AND on April 15, 2018, at Queen Kaahumanu Center located at 275 W Kaahumanu Ave, Kahului HI from 11 AM- 4 PM.
This free, 3-day steel guitar festival includes a series of performances, presentations, instructional workshops and nightly jam sessions. This annual event is presented by the Arts Education for Children Group, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, and Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences (HIMELE).

The Maui Steel Guitar Festival has been developed to promote appreciation and interest in the Hawaiian Steel Guitar as a uniquely Hawaiian music genre. This free, 3-day festival includes a series of performances, presentations, instructional workshops, jam sessions and public and private school visitations that are focused on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and its importance in the Hawaiian music genre. The Hawaiian Steel Guitar is the only instrument thought to be indigenous to Hawaii.

Friday and Saturday activities will be presented at the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, while Sunday’s activities will occur at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului. Generally, the festival will include these components:
Friday School Presentations Steel Guitar Exhibit Friday Open Stage Sessions Friday and Saturday evening Ho’olaule’a programs Friday and Saturday evening Kanikapila Saturday morning Workshops Sunday Ho’olaule’a program and Steel Guitar Exhibit at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului

A STEEL GUITAR EXHIBIT featuring vintage lap steel guitars will be on display, some dating back to the 1930s.
FRIDAY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS The festival’s educational component provides learning opportunities for local area schools. These educational presentations will be made by teams of festival steel guitar masters and are geared towards reintroducing the Hawaiian steel guitar to the younger generation and to get them interested in the instrument and its importance in Hawaiian music. If your Maui school is interested in such a presentation and has not been contacted, please fill out the contact form to reserve your opportunity.
FRIDAY OPEN STAGE SESSIONS where Hawaiian steel guitarists or bands with a Hawaiian Steel Guitar will present 30-minute programs to festival attendees. Performances will be presented from approximately 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENING HO’OLAULE’A programs will showcase each of the Festival’s featured performers in individual programs. A different group of steel guitar masters and artists will be featured each night.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENING KANIKAPILA jam sessions will be held in the ‘Ohana Room. Festival guests are invited to bring their instruments, amplifiers, and music stands as appropriate and play along Hawaiian-style with the steel guitar masters.
SATURDAY WORKSHOPS covering various steel guitar topics will be offered.
SUNDAY HO’OLAULE’A at Kahului’s Queen Ka’ahamanu Center will feature a steel guitar exhibit and several steel guitar masters in individual programs.

Queen Ka’ahamanu Center Program This year’s festival will be held at two venues. Upon conclusion of the main festival at the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, select master steel guitarists from Hawaii and Japan will continue performances at the Queen Ka’ahamanu Center in Kahului from 11 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday. The vintage lap steel guitar exhibit will also be on display at the center.
