Thoughts on Scriddler?

This is gonna be a long one, so buckle up...

Firstly, you gotta understand that all that follows is a recollection of the fandom over the years, since 2015 to be exact. Speaking stickily Jonathan Crane fandom, Scriddler has always been the most popular ship for Scarecrow. I couldn't give ya a beginning to this, as even back then I found years old art for Scriddler circulating. Though, tumblr as a social media is where it blossomed.

When I first started this blog, I had my OC to develop and I was very self conscious and unknowingly putting myself through trauma via art school and a lack of disability accessibility. Not gonna get into that, but I was very vulnerable as well as impressionable.

I did NOT like Scriddler, almost detested it. It seemed like it was everywhere, and this was before tumblr had a decent way of blocking. Not that it would have helped, because for some reason i liked suffering. Felt like I deserved to be depressed. Took me a long time to realize blocking content actually made life better aslhkds

Anyways, even early on I had a lot of support, people wanted to know about my OC and cared, but I always felt like I played second fiddle to the holy of holy, Scriddler. And if you've read any of my recent posts, you know I've come to accept that just how it is with OCs. But that doesn't mean I didn't get my fair share of anon hate, suicide threats, etc. The fandom was not always welcoming. Or perhaps there was just a minority who loved to abuse the anon function. (if you think there's a lot of drama today, you were not there when it was bad)

It took me a LONG time to grow to like Scriddler. I used to feel like they had very little in common, and it bothered me that most of the art was majorly sexual. That's a whole 'nother can of worms, but ya know. I don't hate Scriddler today, which should be obvious seeing as I reblog it now. Though, I like Hattercrow a tad more.

A lot of this was my own internal issues, though the fandoms penchant to take two males who never interact and ship them, suffice to say is alive and strong. Nicely enough however, there has been more "Scriddler" like content from comics. (I say this loosely, but they do interact quite a bite more than they did ten years ago)

Scriddler, and to a lesser, Hattercrow, is a ship you either love or hate. Except me. I kinda fall in the middle. Though I feel it's worth mentioning that Scarecrow has had his fair share of female/female presenting ships too, and as much as I hate to say it, they're generally disliked by the greater fandom. (or simply ignored) We all know why. I've mentioned this before. :/ and I've had close friends give up on their ships because of it. Just like me. I gave up. I hat admitting that, but I can't compete with Scriddler.

I wish there was a way to change that, but I wouldn't know were to start. That's why I try to support OCs for example, someones gotta do it. I can't let another person go through what I went though.

TL;DR: Sciddler is not a bad ship, I don't dislike it anymore, but don't think I'm not silently side eyeing the loud minority who shit on anyone for even thinking Jonathan could love a woman. Ya know, despite canon only showing evidence for that.

Jervis and Jon look so dependent and destroy each other unconsciously 🥲 (sometimes it's cute but I still don't like that ship). The worst is people like this ship, even if it's toxic. Well... When I see some people saying my Scarecrow is sexy as he just wants to devour your soul, I shouldn't be surprised with internet people and toxic couples.

But I'm not into a Dork Squad ship either, the idea is something but not for me. In my eyes it's like when classmates are saying I make out with a friend 😭.

But I don't hate people making ships I like or don't, they do whatever they want and they're most of the time sweethearts.

A lot of DC media (comics, movies, cartoons, games). Occasional Super Mario or Marvel franchises. Used to be a whole lot of Star Trek, which I still love.

Yes. I always try to respond within a day or two and with as lengthy a reply as the comment.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

From Bad To Worse (Star Trek TOS). I did eventually write a follow up fic to give McCoy some healing but yeah, this fic was left with an angsty ending.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics have happy endings but I'm going to pick A Plague On Both Your Houses (Gotham) because its based on a tragedy which makes the ending here all the happier.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, generally not. I have had a troll on ff.net and some people who didn't apparently read my fic before commenting 🙄 but people are generally nice.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes. Hard to answer this. I aim for emotional, or sensual usually. Its some part of the relationship whether thats frustrated sex or tender love.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Not often. I did start one last year during riddlebird week, Gay Attorney (Gotham/Ace Attorney), but I lost enthusiasm (unrelated to it being a crossover)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge although who knows with the AI scrapers nowadays.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Several of my spones drabbles got translated into Spanish here and Olduvai (Star Trek AOS) got translated into Russian here.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes. I used to work closely with StellarLibraryLady and we co-wrote a series of Star Trek fics and drabbles called Plant Life. I have assisted and been assisted with various other fics such as The Dating Game (Batman media) with LordRobotnik and Far From Over (Batman movies 89-97) with TheDreammweaver.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Riddlebird holds the number one spot for having so many variations I can play with. Spones and hattercrow are also favourites.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you will?

Probably one called Gotham Gossip which has been in my notes folder for years. I have the template all done but can't muster any interest in writing it. The Gotham version of riddlebird is not my preferred fandom.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'd say characterisation and plots with heart. My stories revolve around the relationships so I focus on that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

World building and visual descriptions. The first isn't needed in fanfic and I don't have the required visualisation for the second.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Nothing wrong with this as long as care is taken to try and get it right. Translations should be provided either as a footnote or with proper hover features enabled.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Knightmare, a British kids TV show from the 80s - 90s. I typed this on an old style word processor and still have it saved to floppy disc.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Tough question. Right now I'm going to pick Do You Mind? (Batman the animated series). I enjoyed weving the story with canon events and know it worked well.

Some more stuff about my hattercrow/ mad Rider Fusion au

John was damned to his fate since the day he was born, for you see he was a baby made  from a plea for fertility to the devil, and on his 20th birthday Lucifer would come to take what was rightfully his, and he did

His ride of choice is a skeletal horse that has a flaming head and back hooves

His outfit consists of a pitch black hodgepodge of a cowboy outfit and a preachers habit, mostly the preacher part comes from the hat and how flowy the robes are, when he's riding his skeletal faces hating under the Hat, but it does light up when he's found his Mark or when he's pissed

jervis was a neuroscientist working for aim, he's actually one of the scientists that help make  brain doc(  a fusion of Modoc and Brainiac),   when he learned it was going to be used for war and destruction, he tried to whistle blow, to keep him from doing this the higher ups subjected him to an experimental formula,  a formula that was thought to be an extremely failed attempt at creating a regenerative Mega Soldier, but it didn't fail for him

So yeah after we escaped the facility and figured out he couldn't induce temporary but incredibly destructive Madness on to people, he started little cross country chaos

It was love at first pennant stare between the two,  though it was a second pennant stare he got that  knocked some of his original Self back into place, nowadays is a lot less of a chaos spreading dick than he was, who has a knack for inducing destructive chaos but for a good cause

John calls the angel of  vengeance  he's sharing a body with Crow,  it's real name is incredibly unpronounceable by human tongue,  only John can say it but when he does the people who's listening to him say it spontaneously start burning and vomiting blood

jervis pet name for him is Angel

He calls  John's horse Seabiscuit,  but it's given name by its creator and owner is death  stallion

John has access to his pennant stare in his human form as well,  though it only induces the emotional agony

jervis's mad cap outfit is basically a suit version of the canonical get up, and no mask though his eyes are shaded  most of the time by the Hat, he only lifts it up if you can do is horrible Madness onto people, or when he needs a fresh dose of penance when he starts getting a little bit too excited lest he revert to complete chaos dickory

A bit of a side effect of jervis's Madness  gaz, anything he commands you to do while under its effect you will do, though usually he just lets people he crazys do their own thing,  it can be permanent if he gazes upon you long enough,  but only one person he's ever encountered was worthy of  a long look

That person was Lyle Bolton, he was a guard at the aim facility jervis used to work at, he was the guy who  ratted  him out for wanting to snitch  on the   brain doc thing, and he's in the  incurable  Ward of Arkham

John's pennant stare also has the effect of making you horribly hallucinate your worst fear as well as any crimes you have committed upon your fellow man

John's  Rider form has the voice of the Lich, with the  tiniest little sprinkle of a Southern accent below all that whispering baritone

Yes they have made love on the Flaming horse, on multiple occasions,  usually after a successful bounty

jervis is very acrobatic,  and also a really good contortionist,  it's less he's good at stretching his limbs back and more that he's completely okay and capable of dislocating his bones for any uses he may need them dislocated for��

jervis sometimes dresses up like a cowboy  nun to compliment John's Cowboy Priestess attic

jervis has a rivalry with the Ragdoll Deadpool Fusion of this AU,  it's mostly just tetch instigating fights, his hatred of dead  doll comes from an irrational fear that he will steal his flaming man and an incident where he was thrown off a building, yes it is true the death doll has a thing for skeletons but not flaming skeletons,  but jervis doesn't know that

If you had to choose, hattercrow or scriddler? (not here to hate obviously, just curious)

If I had to choose, probably scriddler. I think there's definitely merit to hattercrow but it's never vibed for me.

Both ships kinda do contend with Jonathan's kinda whole complex over giving up control and letting himself be vulnerable, but hattercrow often vibes more like Jon's being tossed into a situation with someone else who shares similar issues of avoidance and control with the caveat that Jervis is really really emotionally sensitive and very very volatile. Not saying Jon isn't the latter, but he has the tools to steady himself and Jervis doesn't.

I always feel like Scriddler has this really good aspect that Edward is fairly confrontational about his emotions and yeah it probably would be toxic and borderline violent at times because Jon just is volatile but...I don't mind that? I just like seeing Edward push at Jonathan's complexes to get an actual development in their relationship.

I LOVED Shane West as Gotham!Bane — just wish he had got to do the entire season and not just 4 episodes. His Eduardo Dorrance made you feel the sympathy for Bane by the time he tranformed too which I feel is important with the villains — you have to find a reason to not just out and out hate them. Need to watch SW in more stuff. Great actor and cool dude.

Yeah, strongly agree, Shane West as Bane is unfairly hated by Gotham fans; like Jason Todd as Robin gets hated by (many) Dick Grayson's stans.

Back when one of Anon asked is Gotham!Jonathan underage but he was hinted he's an adult during season 4. So Harley Quinn series made me have Banecrow as my OTP. Still, i want Eduardo Dorrance to meet Jonathan Crane and their relationship should be healthy. The alternate nickname of Gotham!Banecrow will be Dorrancrane. Gotham!Hattercrow in my headcanon it will be very abusive, Jon deserves a better boyfriend and a better dynamic than Jervis.

Scarecrow Ship Positivity

This post is a positive place for various Scarecrow ships, I want to offer this blog up as a place where everyone is welcome. I know how ships can separate people, but if we could simply learn to respect each other, then fandom would be a brighter place. Anyway, enough of my sappy preaching, onto the positivity!

Scridder: Two crazy men fighting each other on a daily basis but still finding a reason to love one another? Yes. The art is adorable, the fanfics are great, a solid ship.

Hattercrow: Usually much softer, but nothing wrong with that. I love the kindness and tenderness of this ship. These two truly trust each other, and it shows in how they leave one another. Great Ship

TwoCrow: A defunct district attorney and ex-teacher somehow getting along? Sign me up! They have a great dynamic and may suffer similar mental conditions, making them a good pair to play off each other.

ScareBane: The Harley Quinn series popularized this ship, and I just adore it’s comedic value!  There’s nothign better than a big bear and his twink boyfriend. A+ Ship, with a nice touch of humor.

WaylonCrane: Okay, ignore Arkhamverse and focus on the comics, I swear this could work! Waylon and Scarecrow have a good relationship in comic canon, and could totally hit if off. Both suffer from a bullied childhood, and being alike in that way brings them together. Soft Ship. Good Ship.

Batcrow: Could Bruce Wayne learn to love? I think so. And perhaps Crane could help him, in more ways than one. He is a good therapist after all ,it’s his job to help people....well, not really, but we can pretend. Still, a worthy ship.

ScareIvy: Whats better than two genius scientists working together? Making that two CRAZY genius scientists.Ivy and Crane make for a sweet pairing with a lot of tension, lots of angst and plenty of love to spare. Solid Pairing.

ScaryQuinn: A personal favorite, two mad freaks falling in love over a mutual hatred of Sigmund Freud. This pairing is pure...pure craziness! Just gotta love their chemistry and sarcastic natures. A soft ship.

BoltonCrane: I’m a firm believer that all shippers should feel welcome, even if their ship makes you uncomfortable. I feel it’s worth mentioning this ship, despite the negativity that surrounds it. We need to do better as a fandom. This may not be a pretty relationship, but what villain ship is perfect? None of them. A ship worth mentioning, even if it costs me followers.

Scarecrow/OC: Okay, I’m biased but this is the best. OCs exemplify creativity, weaving your own ideas into an already established world can be difficult, so you gotta hand it to these ships. They may not be widely loved, but I’m glad they exist. Big Favorite Ship.

Now, this is just listing the ones I know if, there may be more, and feel free to mention them in the comments. Like I said, this is a positive space for everyone. Even if some of this ships are notps for you, you should still respect those who ship them. Villain ships as a whole can be dangerous, scary, and unhealthy but they can also be soft, nurturing and caring. It all depends on how you want to portray the characters, and comics is a medium with INFINITE verses available to you. Again, this post is for everyone, because everyone deserves to have a voice in the fandom.
