Rest in Peace Alexi Laiho

So, Alexi Laiho died a little over a week back, they only announced it today. If you don't know who I'm talking about, then this post isn't for you. If you want to know, go listen to this or for a more humorous look this cover.

CoB has been one of my favorites and main stay bands in my music library at least ever since I taped and watched one of their concerts being shown on Yle 2 (Kind of shocking, I know. Yle the prudes showing a metal gig, and in an age before Lordi won the Eurovision) at least. Probably longer. I think it was my good friend Romu (they don't use tumblr AFAIK) that first showed the band to me...

And I was so excited to see what Bodom After Midnight would bring, now i'm wondering if BAM will even continue, since Bodom is best known for Alexi's shredding and with him gone... I don't know who could replace him, and even if i did, i'm not sure he should be replaced. I know BAM has two other former COB members, but even then i'm not sure if there's any point to the name without Alexi.

There are not many people who could stand on the same level as Laiho. He was a virtuoso with the guitar and influenced a LOT of metal musicians, both amateurs and professional, botn new and up and coming as well as established ones.

I feel like CoB was one of the first Finnish metal bands to reach international fame. Back in the 90s not all that many people cared about our little frozen wasteland, at least in the mainstream metal scene. Some more "underground" folks might have thought that we had potential, they might have been aware of Stratovarius (started in 84, first album in 89), Tarot, maybe Impaled Nazarene, 69 Eyes... Back then Finland wasn't that big of a player on the global metal stage. I tried looking, but i couldn't find anything about if we had any proper AM radios. There probably were amateur radios, but how wide those reached and for how long, i have no idea.

While I don't listen to all that much melodeath, CoB remains as one of, if not the absolute, favorites within the genre and along with Sentenced are the band that really got me into the genre. So, yeah. I'm pretty damn bummed out that Laiho has passed away... From what i've heard, it seems like it was cancer that took him and that he and his inner circle had known about it for some time now, so i don't know if the treatements were ineffective or what the issue was.

At any rate, he will be missed.
