Dukhtar (Afia Nathaniel, 2014)
Cast: Samiyah Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza, Saleha Aref, Asif Khan, Ajab Gul, Samina Ahmad, Adnan Shah, Abdullah Jaan, Omair Rana. Screenplay: Afia Nathaniel. Cinematography: Najaf Bilgrami, Armughan Hassan. Production design: Nauman Kashif. Film editing: Armughan Hassan, Afia Nathaniel, Lee Percy. Music: Sahir Ali Bagga, Peter Nashel.
Dukhtar takes place where tourists fear to tread: the mountainous parts of northern Pakistan. But it's not a film about inter-religious strife or terrorism, except for the kind of emotional terrorism that results from the conflict between ancient tribalism and the modern world. The "daughter" of the film's title -- in the opening credits the Urdu word "dukhtar" morphs into the English equivalent -- is Zainab (Saleha Aref), a bright girl on the verge of puberty, whom we see in a charming scene early in the film trying to teach her mother, Allah Rakhi (Samiya Mumtaz), some of the English that she has learned at school. But Zainab's education is about to be threatened: Her father, the tribal chief Daulat Khan (Asif Khan), is trying to put an end to the longstanding blood feud with a rival tribe led by Tor Gul (Abdullah Jan). They come to a deal: The feud will end if Daulat Khan will give his daughter in marriage to the elderly Tor Gul. But Allah Rakhi, who as a girl was married to Daulat Khan in a similar arrangement, doesn't want to see her daughter condemned to the same kind of life. She takes Zainab and flees. Along the way she persuades a young truck driver, Sohail (Mohib Mirza), to give them a lift. He takes them, after several narrow escapes, to his home in the mountains and finally to crowded and busy Lahore, where Allah Rakhi is to meet with her mother, whom she hasn't seen since her marriage. Afia Nathaniel's screenplay is a bit on the formulaic side: We've seen many versions of this flight-and-pursuit road movie, and her film contains all of the usual close calls and missed connections we've come to expect. The movie gets its life and an appearance of freshness from the performances. Saleha Aref invests Zainab with the awkwardness and rebellion that you'd expect from a girl her age, Samiya Mumtaz is convincingly both fierce and tender, and the chemistry that develops between her character and Mohib Mirza's is convincing. Even better, the cinematography by Armughan Hassan is superb, from the sweeping spectacle of the mountain background to the rich use of color. The film departs from the conventions of its genre with an ambiguous ending, which points up the difficulty of trying to force real-life concerns like tribalism and the status of women into a movie formula: Neither a traditional happy ending nor a bleak triumph of the status quo would have felt right. Dukhtar is Nathaniel's first feature, and it shows more than just promise.

Pakistan: Armed Attackers Kill 12 Pakistani Police Officers in Ambush
On August 23, 2024, two police vehicles carrying approximately 22 officers were returning from a police camp in the Machka area of Rahim Yar Khan District, Pakistan. The heavy rains had made the roads extremely muddy causing one of the vehicles to break down. As the police officers were attempting to manage the situation, they were ambushed by dacoits who launched a rocket attack on the stranded vehicles. The attackers then opened fire on the officers resulting in the death of 11 policemen and injuries to nine others. The death toll from this attack later rose to 12. https://twitter.com/SADigestOnline/status/1826885294584439207

The terrain of the Katcha area by dense forests and difficult to navigate waterways has provided these criminals with a natural hideout. Despite previous military and police operations aimed at eliminating these gangs, they have continued to resurface exploiting the lack of law and order in the region. The Punjab police in coordination with their counterparts in Sindh launched a massive operation to hunt down the perpetrators. Over 320 police personnel from Punjab along with additional forces from Sindh were mobilized to carry out the operation in the Katcha area. The Pakistan police identified the main suspect behind the attack as Bashir Shar. The police managed to locate and kill Bashir Shar. During the operation, five of his accomplices identified as Sanaullah Shar, Gada Ali, Kamlu Shar, Ramzan Shar and Gadi, were also injured. The Pakistan police have said to continue the operation until all the perpetrators are either apprehended or eliminated. The deadly ambush and the police operation prompted responses from both provincial and federal governments. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the Inspector General of Punjab Police, Dr. Usman Anwar and other senior officials to personally oversee the situation in Rahim Yar Khan. Maryam Nawaz also instructed the Punjab Home Secretary to initiate an immediate operation in the Katcha areas with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab taking the lead. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Dies in Helicopter Crash: State Media
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and several other officials, perished in a helicopter crash, Iranian state media reported on Monday. The crash, which occurred in foggy conditions in northern Iran’s mountainous region, left the nation without two key diplomatic figures amid heightened regional tensions due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Following the announcement, Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, convened an emergency government meeting and appointed First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as the acting president. Khamenei also declared five days of national mourning.
Complete Report and coverage is here ..
The helicopter was returning from an event near the Iran-Azerbaijan border when it crashed. State media released images of the wreckage but did not provide an immediate cause for the crash. Rescue teams, including drones and dogs, conducted intensive search operations. Earlier reports indicated that two passengers had communicated with rescue workers, and the Iranian military assisted in the efforts.
International reactions included Pakistan’s declaration of a day of mourning and Russian President Vladimir Putin sending condolences to Khamenei.
Ebrahim Raisi, a former cleric and judge, was elected president in 2021, succeeding Hassan Rouhani. Raisi was known for his hard-line stance and continued commitment to Iran’s nuclear deal despite the U.S. withdrawal in 2018. His recent tenure saw increased regional tensions, including a celebrated attack on Israel following a deadly airstrike in Damascus.
Iran’s president heads the government, but the supreme leader holds ultimate authority, overseeing national policies and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to Iran’s constitution, the first vice president assumes the presidency upon the president’s death, with a new election to be held within 50 days.

EABS meets Jaubi - In Search of a Better Tomorrow - jazz innovators from Poland and Pakistan collaborate on what may be the world fusion album of the year
A few years ago, a very interesting relationship began to develop. A bridge was built out of Jaubi's releases on Astigmatic Records and the increasingly frequent collaborations between musicians from Europe and Asia - out of Latarnik's trip to Pakistan resulting in the widely acclaimed album Nafs at Peace and Zohaib, Dhani and Ali's revisit to Poland, which has been recorded as the EABS meets Jaubi In Search of a Better Tomorrow longplay.
Wrocław and Lahore are almost 7,000 kilometers apart. And despite this immense distance that separates the EABS and Jaubi musicians, the two bands find a surprising amount of common ground that determines their musical explorations. These include both a strong attachment to locality and respect for tradition, a penchant for weaving in some hip-hop elements, and the basis of a love of improvisation and spiritual jazz. It was therefore only a matter of time before they joined forces. And so, they proceeded to build a (cross)cultural bridge between Poland and Pakistan. A bridge whose pillars are Hindustani ragas, polish jazz understood in a variety of ways, and brotherhood in sound. This merger's finale is surprising to such an extent that it is difficult to pigeonhole this collaboration in any way. They met through the Get Your Jazz Together programme, which was launched by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute to help build such bridges. The following day after Jaubi's premiere concert at the OFF Festival in Katowice, the musicians went to Monochrom Studio in Kłodzko Valley, where they spent a week making music together, exchanging ideas and compositions. The outcome of the collaboration surprised them all, materializing in rather dark shades. So how did this happen, given that the recordings were realized in picturesque natural circumstances mid-summer? It was only yesterday that the pandemic restrictions were lifted, the inflation is raging, Russia has invaded Ukraine and no one in our region can be sure of peace anymore, while Pakistan has faced the worst floods in years. So much upheaval has been delivered by the world in recent times that the experience of the past has left its mark even on a sunny present day. Against all odds, however, the musicians are seeking solace, hoping that the tomorrow that is yet to come will finally bring something better. Even after the darkest night, however, comes day. It is known to the group from Lahore, who, often challenged by life, have already sent prayers for peace through their previous album. This is also known to the band from Wrocław, whose musical paths are inextricably bound up with the difficult and painful history of their homeland, and who have already experienced the era of unearthing their foundations and cosmic escapism in the spirit of Sun Ra. Today, they are walking swiftly towards the sun, all together, a group of eight artists whose lives are separated by their place of birth – the cultural education they received and the musical tradition they grew up in – but who are united by that one phrase, melody or emotion which gave origin to each of the compositions collected on the album titled In Search of a Better Tomorrow. Members of EABS: Marek “Latarnik” Pędziwiatr - Grand piano, Fender Rhodes Mark II, Nord Stage 2, Moog Voyager; Marcin Rak - Drums; Paweł “Wuja HZG” Stachowiak - Bass guitar, Moog Little Phatty; Olaf Węgier - Saxophones: tenor, sopran; bass clarinet; Jakub Kurek - Trumpet; Members of Jaubi Ali Riaz Baqar - Guitar Kashif Ali Dhani - Tabla, Vocals Zohaib Hassan Khan - Sarangi Graphic design: Sainer Text: Filip Kalinowski Translation: Magda Marcinkowska Photo: Hubert Misiaczyk

Imran threatens nationwide protest over hike in power, gas tariff
Previous State head Imran Khan hosts cautioned the decision get-together to send off a cross country fight in the event that there is an expansion in the power and gas duty. The previous cricketer and establishing director of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) has been in prison for the dubious instance of selling gifts. Yet, being in prison has not made him quiet. He has been conveying his viewpoints on the ongoing political and financial circumstances of the country.
While tending to the media from Adiala prison, he said Pakistan's economy couldn't be settled except if the public authority follows the public order. He believed that further tax assessment would undermine the economy during June and July. He said as the greater part of the income gathered through charges strayed into the red assistance, financial backers were hesitant to put resources into Pakistan.
Consulting with the Pakistani media about the procedures in the £190 million debasement case, Khan said he wouldn't look for an arrangement to leave the nation like President Asif Ali Zardari and previous PM Nawaz Sharif. He referenced the freedom of Sharif in the Toshakhana vehicle reference and Zardari was looking for resistance for this situation.
He raised the issue of Hassan Nawaz, child of Nawaz Sharif, who offered property of £51.48 million to Malik Riaz; there was no activity against him in spite of Catch setting up another Toshakhana reference against himself.
He dove into the issues of Malik Riaz, a land big shot and said the benefits of £37.18 million were procured by the High Court.
As indicated by Khan, the UK government froze Malik Riaz's cash for being a dubious exchange. On the off chance that he had recorded a suit under the steady gaze of a common court in the UK, the cash would have been stuck in prosecution for a long time, he said, guaranteeing that about £79.63 million Pakistani residents were at that point caught in legal disputes in different nations.
This was the explanation, he said, the bureau gave a gesture for an out-of-court settlement and the arrangement was kept private on the demand of the UK's Public Wrongdoing Organization.
Khan made sense of that a show-cause notice was given to PTI's Sher Afzal Khan Marwat for over and over disregarding party discipline. Regardless of various admonitions to stick to party strategy, Marwat proceeded to reprimand party pioneers openly. Moreover, Marwat offered a dubious comment during the visit of a Saudi designation to Pakistan, fueling what is going on. In any case, Khan recognized Marwat's important commitments to the party and demonstrated that there would be no further issues assuming Marwat followed party discipline from now on.

Ishq, Inshallah
Is Kashmir getting on the South Asia’s music map?
By Faisul Yaseen
Faheem Abdullah and Rauhan Malik’s recent song ‘Ishq’ from ‘Lost; Found’ album has immortalised the work of Amir Ameer, a poet from Rahim Yar Khan, a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
It is breaking the internet and becoming a trending meme song. The song is also bringing closer music lovers across India and Pakistan, who are raving about Ameer’s mesmerising poetry and soothing voice of Abdullah and Malik. ‘Ishq’ may not be the best thing to have happened to the Kashmir music industry but it certainly has attracted traction and could play its part in putting Kashmir on South Asia’s music map.
Though boasting of rich musical instrumentals, magical voices, and insightful poetry, Kashmir’s music industry has suffered over the decades due to the Kashmiri language’s limited reach as only 6.8 million people speak Kashmiri. However, the experimentation of composing Urdu songs by young Kashmiri singers like Abdullah and Malik and a crop of new-generation Kashmiri singers is making the canvas bigger for them as Urdu boasts 71.29 million native speakers while the language is also understood by 571.3 million native Hindi speakers.
Like Abdullah and Malik, someone who took this experimentation to new heights in Kashmir was Yawar Abdal, a new-age Kashmiri singer who, in 2017, experimented with his single, ‘Tamana’, a multilingual song in Kashmiri, Urdu, and Persian languages based on the poetry of three legendary poets: Mehjoor (Kashmiri), Mirza Ghalib (Urdu), and Amir Khusru (Persian). The song became an instant hit on the internet. Abdal’s best work to date though might not be ‘Tamama’ but a lesser hit ‘Inshallah’. It is an artistic genius: multilayered and ambiguous and shakes a listener out of placid.
Abdal may not have the best voice among the new-age Kashmiri singers but he is heads and shoulders above others when it comes to crafting his work. Like his unconventional music, the visualisation in his music videos touches raw nerves and asks questions that only great art can.
Canadian pop artist Grimes says, “Only art ever saved me, everything else has betrayed me.” And Abdal’s music and music videos never betray your trust.
Jyotsna Bharti in ‘Mixing Old Melody with New Melancholy: Meet Kashmir’s Fresh Folksingers’ writes, “At a time when youngsters elsewhere are de-rooting themselves and trying westerns, many new-age Kashmiri musicians and singers are popularising their roots. Following the footsteps of their forefathers, they’re finding solace in Rabab, pleasures in poetries and life in mountains…”
These new-age Kashmiri singers like Ali Saifuddin, Mohammad Muneem Nazir, Saim Bhat, Ishfaq Kawa, Rasiq Khan, Waqar Khan, Kabul Bukhari, Arsalan Nizami, Ubair Taj Beigh, Baabarr, Mudacer, Shazia Bashir, Aabha Hanjura, Vibha Saraf, and Rahul Wanchoo wear Kashmir on their sleeves, sport Kashmiri shawls and Pherans, use traditional musical instruments, and shoot music videos in the picturesque locales.
They have taken a leaf out of the book of their ancestors like Raja Begum, Shamima Dev Azad, Ghulam Hassan Sofi, Abdul Rashid Hafiz, Kailash Mehra Sadhu, and Neeraja Pandit and popularised it among the new generations of Kashmir offering them music from their roots and educating them that Kashmiri music might be as rich as the Bollywood and western music and much like the Punjabi music could carve out an identity of its own.
Kashmiri music represents its rich melodic heritage. It has played a significant role in shaping and expressing its cultural identity. Kashmiri music has served as a powerful tool to preserve Kashmiri traditions, values, and stories.
Kalhana in his magnum opus ‘Rajatarangini’ wrote in the 12th Century CE that Kashmiri musical instruments have extremely aged roots. A 4th-century CE tile found during excavation from Harwan shows the impression of a female musician playing a drum. The other person is shown playing a veena. King Bhiksacara (1120-21 CE), who himself played these instruments was fond of ‘Chhakri’ (folk choral singing) which continues to be popular in Kashmir.
According to Kalhana, folk musical instruments like earthen pots and brass vessels were used by Kashmiri people from very early times. Prominent musical instruments played in Kashmir include Surnai, Santoor, Saitar, Nai, Tumbaknari, Noot, and Rabab.
Tumkanari (goblet drum) is usually used by womenfolk on occasions like engagement and marriage functions. In Central Asia Tumkanari called Tumbakh or Tunbak is now made of wood while Kashmir maintains its originality and the musical instrument is still made of baked clay. Similarly, the use of Noet (earthen pot) in Kashmiri music is mentioned in Nilmata Purana as well as Kalhana’s Rajtarangini.
Kashmiri music also has influences from the Central Asian music.
“We even borrowed their music and instruments,” historian Prof Fida Muhammad Hassnain wrote in ‘Common Cultural Links between Kashmir and Central Asia’.
According to B C Deva, the string instruments, Rabab and Sarangi, came to Kashmir with the influence of Muslims.
While some historians state that the most popular instrument used in folk music in Kashmir is the Rabab borrowed from Persia, others suggest it was adopted from Afghanistan centuries ago and has been an integral part of Kashmiri music culture ever since.
These musical instruments have also played a key role in the evolution of Kashmiri Sufiana music.
The instruments used by the Sufiana musicians are quite different from those used in Indian classical music and Kashmiri folk music. The prominent instruments include Santoor, Kashmiri Saitar, Saaz-e-Kashmir, and Tabla.
Shabir Ahmad Mir in his paper ‘Mystical Music: Safeguarding Sufiana Mausiqi – a Vanishing Art Form of Kashmir’ for the International Journal of Intangible Heritage writes, “Sufiana mausiqi (music) continued to flourish during the reign of Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak (1579-1586). His queen, Habba Khatun, is often credited with introducing a maqam ‘Rast-Kashmiri’ by making a little structural variation on maqam Rast-Farsi. Chak and his queen were great patrons of music as well as musicians themselves, and they devoted their time to embellishing Kashmiri classical music. Rast-Kashmiri still forms the most popular maqam of the Sufiana repertory.”
In Kashmir, marriage and engagement functions, Eid festivals, Radio Kashmir Srinagar, and Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar played a key role in keeping the Kashmiri music alive.
Music often has a massive cultural impact as is illustrated by the influence of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The Beatles is considered as the most influential band in the history of popular music and for defining the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Similarly, The Rolling Stones, considered one of the greatest Rock n Roll bands of all time with their raw energy and rebellious image defined the cultural landscape of the 1960s and beyond.
Abdullah, Malik, and Abdal may just have begun their musical journeys but the route they are taking to their stardom might shape Kashmir’s musical heritage for future generations. Who knows next ‘Coke Studio’ shift in South Asia could come from the Valley! Ishq and Inshallah might be the shape of things to come from Kashmir.
