Sekai no Owari no Encore 2
Author: Kei Sazane
Illustrator: Haruaki Fuyuno
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 23 October 2014
This series is so normal for a fantasy series and it doesn’t really do anything new or that interesting yet it’s still quite entertaining and really easy to get into. It’s a standard fantasy series but it’s written so competently in that it doesn’t have any heavy info-dumps, all of the characters have a distinct personality, there no developments that come completely out of nowhere and the world is simple enough to be easily understood but complicated enough to be interesting. It still needs... something to make it stand out from other fantasy series but I’m enjoying it for what it is and I look forward to contuing Ren’s journey.
Story:
You know, sometimes some of the scenes in this volume feel like they are designed purely to remind the reader that this is a light novel series. Most of the volume is good stuff but there are just these scenes that feel really “light novel”-ish like a hot spring scene where everyone is wearing bathers, some scenes where Ren is “clumsy” and grabs someones boobs/butt and a scene where Ren is so dense that I could hardly believe it. These scenes are easy enough to ignore but they kind of kill the mood a little bit.
The story this time is centered on Kyelse and expands upon the dragon race. It’s interesting stuff and the climactic fight is good fun. The series still needs something... to make it memorable but it’s interesting enough and I’m enjoying it.
Character:
This volume introduces plenty of new characters, though none of them are major. The most memorable one is Calra, Kyelse’s little sister who I don’t expect to appear much after this volume but I liked her well enough. She isn’t really developed but her relationship with Kyelse was interesting. We get to know more about Kyelse in this volume and I’m starting to really like her relationship with Ren. It’s cute. I also really liked Elise in this volume. She had this small gag that made me laugh more than it should have.
With Ren, I really enjoyed learning more about the spirits and his relationships to them. It’s kind of rare to see a protagonist whose main skill is more spiritual rather than physical and who doesn’t start out as OP; he just has potential. Ren’s kind of a plain protagonist but I quite like him regardless.
Adaptation Notes:
I... might prefer the manga over the light novel for this one. Both are good and have the same content but the art is definitely more detailed in the manga. I love Haruaki Fuyuno’s soft style and colours but they try to avoid drawing monsters and dragons so even the illustration of Kyelse’s dragon form only shows a small portion of her body in the light novel but the manga is great at drawing interesting monster designs and it makes the world more interesting and the fight scenes more intense. I’d recommend the manga even if you’ve read the light novel. It’s good stuff.
I now own all 10 volumes of this series so I hope to finish the remaining 8 volumes by the end of the year but next up is the first volume of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto!

Sekai no Owari no Encore 1 Review
Author: Kei Sazane (Author of Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Arui wa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen/Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World)
Illustrator: Haruaki Fuyuno
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 24 July 2017
I’ve always loved fantasy stories. They’ve always enchanted me in a way that no other genre has. When I was a child, all I could read was fantasy stories, as those were the only ones that interested me. These days, my tastes have expanded so that I can enjoy contemporary stories but I always come back to fantasy. Sekai no Owari no Encore reminded me of why that is. No other genre has quite the same amount of freedom and wonder that fantasy has and there’s nothing quite like exploring a world that comes straight from another person’s imagination. It’s certainly not a perfect volume but I sure did enjoy it.
Story:
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Action, Magic
Once upon a time, there was a human hero known as Elline. Together with his companions, he saved the world from destruction but died a few years later due to illness with no living relatives or descendants and legend says that, before his death, he created the “Encore” which contains the secrets of the world and everyone has been searching for it ever since with no success. 300 years later, a boy named Ren happens to bear a close resemblance to the fabled hero and is treated unfairly as a result as he cannot match up to the hero. This is the story of his journey to find the Encore, along with Elline’s old companions: the Archangel Fear, Dragon Princess Kyelse and Demon King Elise.
No matter how much I enjoyed this book, it is still an MF Bunko J book in that it has a few scenes of cliched and unnecessary fanservice. Nothing extreme but it is annoying. And some scenes can get a bit too long and become boring by the end of them.
Fantasy bias aside, I though the story was really well done. It has a simple plot but it’s an effective one. I’ve always had a soft spot for stories that involve a character overcoming their weaknesses and proving their worth. There are plenty of directions that the story can go from here and I’m excited to see where it goes. The world’s really interesting but I can’t help but feel that I’m only seeing a fraction of it; the series is supposedly set in the same world as some of the author’s other series and you can kinda tell as there’s a fictional language with no explanation behind it that I’m guessing was introduced in one of those other series. I’m kind of bummed that the fictional language isn’t really explored here but I guess I’m just going to have to check out the author’s other works at some point for that.
The other thing I want to address is that I’ve seen some sites list this as a harem but, based on this volume, I don’t think it is yet. It’s true that the main cast comprises of three girls and one boy but none of them seem to have a romantic interest in him as of yet. One of the characters does tease him a bit but there doesn’t seem to be any romantic feelings behind her words. This may change in the future but, for now, I really wouldn’t call it a harem.
Character:
Ren is the kind of protagonist who starts out weak but puts his all into becoming better. This protagonist may not be everyones cup of tea but I like him a lot. I enjoy seeing him overcome the limits he believes he has and his most reliable skill is something rather unexpected for an action series protagonist. The heroines are all good too but this volume doesn’t do much to develop their characters for obvious reasons. A few characters are introduced right at the end of the volume as well and are set up for future appearances and I’m excited to learn more about them.
Adaptation Notes:
The manga is illustrated by Ryuu Usui and currently has 5 volumes out. It’s a mixed bag. It makes those cliche fanservice scenes even worse and cuts out some bits that I quite liked but it is more polished than the light novel in some places and cuts out a lot of unnecessary stuff. Plus, the action scenes are very, very good and the art is gorgeous. I do think that the characters came off a bit more likeable in the light novel but it’s worth the read if you don’t have access to the light novel.
Recommended for:
People who enjoy fantasy stories and don’t mind if a story can be a bit cliche in places.
I enjoyed this volume a lot and I can’t wait to get my hands on volume two which I’m betting is going to put the focus on Kyelse.

Sekai no Owari no Encore 10 + Final Series Impressions
Author: Kei Sazane
Illustrator: Haruaki Fuyuno
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 25 May 2017
A good conclusion to a good series that manages to resolve every plot point and be a really satisfying and engaging read. The final battle was epic and I was pleased with how things developed with Venus Light. I haven’t talked about Natasha yet, mostly because I wasn’t sure to feel about her but also because talking about her inevitably comes with spoilers, but I’ll rectify that now as she has become a central part of the cast since her introduction in volume 7. She’s introduced as a bit of an oddity as, despite being a spirit, people other than Ren and Iris are able to hear her voice. The mystery of her true identity then becomes a main plot point and she ends up having a pretty good character arc that’s really interesting to read. Ren’s character arc is one of the best things about this series and it’s concluded nicely here. Overall, this was a good way to end this series and I really enjoyed it.
Final Series Impressions
This seris has quite the slow start with the first 5 volumes not really doing much other than expanding the setting and setting-up things for later volumes. Despite this, the series is never really boring. Kei Sazane may be an orthodox writer, but they are also a competent one so even the slow parts end up having something to enjoy. Volume 6 introduces a really good plot twist that makes the rest of the series a blast to read due to how interesting it becomes and manages to make up for the slow setting.
The best part of the series for me was definitely the setting. It’s just a really interesting setting the feels alive. Ren’s character development was also a really good part of the series and the actions scenes were great. The characters are all likeable and most of them are memorable. I also appreciated that romance was never really much of an element to this series. Yes, there is some ship teasing, but it’s really not a focus and doesn’t go beyond teasing.
Overall, Sekai no Owari no Ecore is a good fantasy series with excellent pacing, story and characters that’s a bit too orthodox for it’s own good and doesn’t do much to make it stand out above other fantasy series. Still, it’s worth the read if you appreciate a good heroic fantasy story.
I do plan to read to read more by Kei Sazane in the future. I’m a bit hesitant because I hated Homa-kou Tozan-bu Diary but I’m way too interested in this world that they have created to not at least try to read more. Besides, a lot of their series are available in BookWalker’s new subscription service.

Sekai no Owari no Encore 9
Author: Kei Sazane
Illustrator: Haruaki Fuyuno
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 25 January 2017
This volume feels like it’s mostly there to set-up things for the final volume so it was kind of boring in a lot of parts but I did really like everything with Venus Light and it was nice to see certain characters again. I don’t have much to say other than I hope this series can pull of an awesome conclusion in the next volume. I’m going to take a brief break before reading it but I’m excited!

Sekai no Owari no Encore 8
Author: Kei Sazane
Illustrator: Haruaki Fuyuno
Label: MF Bunko J
Release Date: 23 September 2016
Man, this series sure has gotten far more interesting in these past few volumes. There are still some slow moments but I’m really enjoying seeing the secrets of this world being revealed. I’m also enjoying Ren’s little romance with Kyelse. I do have to wonder, though, if we’ll ever see a Ren that doesn’t try to compare himself to Elraine. It’d be nice if he was able to just live as himself without worrying about Elraine. 2 volumes left and I’m very excited to see how this story is going to conclude itself.
I’ll be reading volume 9 soon. Next up is Bakarina 6
