dc disability related headcanons:

• wayne enterprises under wayne medical, and the martha wayne foundation (and similarly under neon knights) works to make all care for disabled individuals affordable (or free to those who cannot pay) for everyone, as well as design high quality medical aids like wheelchairs, feeding tubes, hearing aids, etc.

• like the above, queen industries and kord industries would do much of the same and collaborate. unsure on if lexcorps would be involved as lex might want to help but his motives are a little shaky.

• hartley rathaway (pied piper) would also use his wealth to do much of the same, considering he is disabled himself.

• on the topic of hartley, i personally have it that he was born with severe deafness and uses hearing aids (but not all the time) as well as ASL. i did my best researching medically and looking up thoughts and opinions of the d/Deaf community but pls lmk if i got anything wrong based on what we know about hartley.

• barbara gordon (oracle) would work with others and utilize her tech abilities to create a variety hi-tech wheelchairs that are affordable (or free to those who cannot pay) and effective. her oracle wheelchair is customized to her needs and even has a compartment that acts as a utility belt (as she can very much still kick ass in the wheelchair and lives in gotham so it's kinda necessary to have).

• each batkid would use being legally adopted/knowing the wayne family to sponsor various disabled causes that personally impact them.

• my concept of wildstorm to dc transfer of semi-retired the authority also would sponsor many causes, disability care and activism amongst it.

• many atlanteans due to living in the ocean i imagine are colorblind due to the difference of environment to the surface. we do have the canon example with garth (tempest), who based off what his color blindness is described as, has blue-yellow tritanomaly color blindness.

• after researching for jack drake and bruce similarly regarding 'fixed' disability of spinal injury, it is highly likely the location of their injury never made them lose function of their legs. intensive physical therapy was required and there are still bad days but i feel this is the best alternative than curing it or making it never happen.

• i have a personal idea that in some scenarios after losing his spleen + the impact of vigilantism on the body + surviving the clench leads to tim developing arthritis and he becomes a cane user (which his bō staff can act as a cane) and he splits his time between working in the field or working on comms and computers with oracle. undecided if it's main universe but it's beloved nonetheless to me!

• to the people who hc jason with hearing aids, being a cane user and or having a service dog.. i see you and ily.

Surprisingly, it was Barry! In my Westhallen fic. I think it was mostly because I had the whole AU in mind and was thinking too much about the parts I haven't written yet and that blocked this scene from happening properly.

tagged by @supernovasimplicity for this one. i don’t write  anymore, so this is a monument to all my sins (my 50000 drafts in my notes app) instead. consider this the list of things i would have written were i capable of the remotest bit of commitment. fully naming and shaming a whole bunch of past fandoms here too.

kinnporsche - SPH chapters whatever to whatever would have been the end: this counts because it is the biggest casualty in terms of scope. there are at least three more arcs i was planning, including the promised-but-never-delivered murderboner adventures, a revenge/separation arc, and the ending has been planned out for months. it is basically guaranteed never to see the light of day. www sad trombone dot com. - (redacted) vegaspete fantasy AU: this was a me & boots co-production. part of it exists and did get periodically picked at and the outline got revised a thousand times, but what was supposed to be conveyed as a fairytale with a deft touch, it had all the subtlety of the claw end of a hammer. this is the one i’ll drink about years from now and be bummed i never finished it. - i once promised dearly beloved @trueplainhearts i would write her the missing scene vegasmacau episode 2 cleanup after porsche’s bullshit at the koi pond. probably the one I’m most surprised no one has written (to my knowledge, which is minimal). - all the prompts i got for vp one-shots. these keep me up nights. they’re rotting in my askbox in the hopes i’ll get my shit together. have not forgotten them, just never moved the needle one iota. actually, that’s a lie. i have half a one-shot where macau runs his own horrible cooking youtube channel with a very game pete who will eat basically anything. probably the one closest to completion.

the flash - lord HELP me i was so on my bullshit about a show that continually betrayed me at every turn and stopped being good after two seasons despite running for nine. (i did quit after s3, but the rage will be lifelong.) anyway that shit inexplicably ruled my life because hearts and sparkles hearts and sparkles all the love in the world for my beautiful sad gay deaf mallgoth hartley rathaway, most beloved of his horrible stupid name. i dreadfully miss playing in that sandbox. i went old-school crackship and had my own decades-spanning world set up for two characters who never met in canon because i want nothing more than traumatized embittered brilliant characters hated by their own family and the people around them to ultimately create their own homes and happinesses. i wrote perhaps an ungodly amount of twitter DM harry wells/hartley rathaway fic but didn’t explore 95% of the world we created. i had millions of ideas i wanted to write for them — some domestic, some porny, some healing, some of those deep dives into disability and anger and grief -- and boy did i fail to write almost all of it. god, that show did not deserve the amount of time and energy and effort i poured into it but it was so creatively fulfilling and it’ll always be a place i come home to. - i would, of course, be remiss if i just acted like a saintly crackshipper while i stank up that fandom when in reality this was the OG murderboner adventures show for me and in the course of making this post i DID find the actual murderboner adventure fic (which i wrote in second person and do not remember doing at ALL) and not finishing that one for an audience of zero is a regret. harrison/hartley was SUCH an underrated ship in the fandom and no one wanted to make it as disgusting as i did despite the fact that it had SUCH ripe elements for a toxic, codependent, abusive, easily-murderous mess of a relationship. young traumatized alienated genius desperately seeks the withheld approval of an authority figure! COME ON PEOPLE GET IT TOGETHER. a boy who would easily kill for you if it meant you would cast your gaze his way for only a moment and who would be blind to how much of himself he’s lost until it’s too late — it was a certified me fic through and through. there was so much murder. so many boners. RIP :( - tbh i had a lot of fucked-up porn wips for this series. i was really into some disgusting fucking non-con and trying to find like-minded degens to share it with was a fool’s errand. hope no one ever steals my phone and finds them all.

all the other shit - i still get a little prickle of guilt over never finishing a detroit evolution wip about my favorite subject, traumatized and isolated boys wrestling with the concept of being loved and cared for after years of loneliness and fury. i was never a good fit for that fandom (true to form) and this just became one of those sore spots i didn’t have the energy to poke at any longer. i always wrote characters too similar to me and then they got uncomfortably personal and i ended up walking away. - lore olympus fans who hate minthe can a) skip this one and b) get the hell off my blog bc i am and always will be a certified minthe stan. love her. adore her. wanted desperately to write the codependent messy dysfunction of the hades/minthe relationship — the unequal power dynamics, the fear and anger of watching someone else get better while you’re not, the careless hurts to release your own pain. i really wanted to capture that loveless misery and just never could nail the vibe i wanted to. - prapaisky. i’m leaving this one as-is bc everyone i know thinks LITA is dogshit but i feel disproportionately strongly about them and wanted to dig into that post-canon recovery. end transmission.   - a lot of my stuff never made it out of my brain bc i knew it wouldn’t be worth it to watch it sink like a stone, which was the case with evelyn/walter from one lane bridge. i don’t know anyone who was binging dour nz murder mysteries and it isn’t exactly a canon that begs for a rich ao3 presence, but giving me glimpses of these gentle characters doomed by the narrative and forced into making unspeakable choices put me in a fucking chokehold. i scarfed every tiny crumb i got of their story and outright sobbed at the ending. watching the lock fall had me in full-on claire danes mode. it was prime character study material and i rewrote their story 500 times in my head bc i knew there wasn’t a chance in hell that thing would get the slightest bit of traction if i slaved over actually writing it. - flex/rita: fuck hbo max fuck zaslav fuck the WORLD. i know doom patrol will end and i will NOT see flex/rita become canon because devan chandler long is on another show and also DC hates me personally. (they should have at least kissed!!!!!! god!!!!! you give a woman a screaming reality-tearing sex-ghost orgasm and yet i can’t even get a chaste smooch out of it!!!!!!!!! god i’m gonna die mad about it.) anyway this was a fun one to plot out in my head bc it was all about sketching out flex’s backstory and exploring hero worship in the contexts of celebrity vs literal superhero and the idea of meeting your idols in the most doom-patrol-y way, which is to say decades later when you’ve both been victims of horrific medical, scientific, and magical fuckery but still are in the prime of your life. very rita hayworth in terms of ‘men go to bed with gilda and wake up with me’ in the disconnect between a public-facing persona and the vulnerability of being your ugliest, most honest self. also idk there probably would have been literal rat-fucking or something, it’s doom patrol.

9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?

The obvious answer for this in terms of romantic pairings is driftrod (Drift/Rodimus, IDW Transformers), since I've got a rapidly-approaching-200k fic with them as the main focal relationship that I've been writing for 4+ years now, that I wrote several chapters for this year. But in terms of stuff that's more specific to this year...

platonic pairing: Harry & Cisco, and thus of course Eobard & Cisco. Of course I've written them before but I think the Pacific Rim AU is the most dedicated time I've spent writing for Harry & Cisco, so I'll count them for this year. Honorable mention to Tina McGee & Hartley Rathaway, a duo I'd never thought I'd write but now have extensive feelings about - I may have started the fic that features them last year, but eh, I finished it this year, it counts.

'whatever those two have going on': Pike and Spock. Definitely Pike and Spock. Thank you Discovery and especially Strange New Worlds. (I'll have another fic with -alternate versions of - them coming out at the end of the week)

romantic pairing: actually, I think the only other romantic pairing I wrote for is MelJay (Mel Medarda/Jayce Talis, Arcane) in this post-s1 fic. I do love them a lot

well, force willing and the creek don't rise, I'll finish mitm next year, so also driftrod for romantic pairing, but:

platonic pairing: I've got a wip fic with Reva & Obi-Wan from the Kenobi series that I'm really quite excited about

'whatever those two have going on': Chozen Toguchi and Daniel Larusso from the karate kid franchise/cobra kai. no i haven't seen s5 yet yes i have substantial fic plans. i decided chozen was my favorite character in the daft karate show on the basis of one episode in s3 and i Will make that everyone's problem

romantic pairing: XIYAO XIYAO XIYAO MY BELOVEDS (Lan Xichen / Meng Yao, the Untamed) I've got a whole series of Pacific Rim AU fics for the Untamed, with a Xiyao centric one that has the most planning and portions written (went back and reread some to add some notes and ended up muttering 'shut the fuck up' to myself and that's how I know I've got gold there)

Definitely Barry and Wally- I love their relationship in the comics, and it was different in the TV show and it would have been so good to have more on how Wally went from disliking Barry (and being jealous of him) when they first met to the very casual "oh you're my brother" in series 3. And I would really have loved for Wally to have become the Flash, maybe if they weren't going to keep him around on screen he could have become the Flash over in Keystone while Barry stuck to Central (with his own team including Hartley Rathaway and Linda Park perhaps?) and had that play of Wally actually getting to be Barry's sidekick for a bit before stepping out on his own and dropping by occasionally to be treated as equally the Flash. Like that Titans comic and I don't have the exact quote because I read that one from the library rather than owning a copy and I can't remember the issue number to look it up, but it pops up on here occasionally, the "you're not my protége" "but I am your legacy" bit with Barry shutting down the rest of the League still acting like Wally's his teenage sidekick instead of a hero in his own right and Wally saying that this name came from Barry is important because of who Barry is to him. It wouldn't be exactly the same relationship with TV Wally as Barry's brother-in-law rather than his beloved son nephew but something like that could have been nice to see.

And Iris and Caitlin! Yes, there should have been more, we had those few supportive moments in series 1 right after Iris found out Barry's the Flash, a couple with the two of them in series 2 while Barry and Cisco are on Earth-2 but they never quite followed through? I think later series did get bogged down by a few too many characters so they couldn't focus on the individual characters and relationships between them as much which probably played an impact on that.

I would have liked some more Iris & Linda scenes too, the start of series 2 it seemed like they were good friends, but Linda disappeared and didn't come back, her dropping by a few times to visit Iris could have been fun.

I did enjoy that Iris & Nia episode in series 9 and Iris' adventures with Sue, so maybe we could have just had an "Iris West's journalism adventures with another female character" episode every series

ALSO while Im thinking about Hartley Rathaway, I wanted to make the point that he’s a excellent example of an actually well done, nuanced queer disabled (ex)-villain/antihero. Like queer villain and disabled villains tend to be absolutely awful, primarily because it very very easy to associate their villainy with their queerness or disability, especially when contrasted with an able straight-cis protag. But with Hartley it manages to influence his villianry and motives, without inherently making him the villain. His powers primarily stem from his disability, and his queerness informs his disconnect to mainstream-society and informs his politics which make them both an important aspect of how he interacts with and sees the world, similarly to many queer and disabled people. BUT Hartley as a villain (at the point he came out) did have a lot more nuance and never really devolved into caricature - both the positive and negative aspects of his attempted wealth redistribution were shown, and ultimately his becoming good really didn't fundamentally change the character’s approach to the world. His conflicts with the Very Conservative heroes impacts his coming out to Wally AND REFLECTS POORLY ON THE HEROES which turns the moral roles and to some extent retroactively flips the villain/hero dynamic. Even if Hart isnt a villain anymore, he is still a moral character foil to Barry for Wally -and Barry is kinda the archetypal conservative moral hero of the DC. (For the conservatism; Barry is very conservative but so is Wally - theyre a really interesting depiction of conservativeness (in the kiwi sense (sorta) not the bigot sense (sorta) and I refuse to derail to explain any longer). All of this means that Hartley comes across as a very moral and complicated person, whose queerness and disability inherently affects his actions without overshadowing them and ultimately pushes him to be a good person (even with his prior history of villianry).

Hartmon Fic Recs

Since June 30 of HartmonFest is "Rec your favorite fanworks" I have a small list of recs below the cut. :D

BLUE series by Embrosia "Out of the Blue" starts with Team Flash on a well deserved vacation, swerves straight into a kidnapping as the Rogues - under Mardon's lead - show up to cause trouble, and Hartley's attempts to protect Cisco land him in hot water too... "Blue Bayou" has Cisco and Hartley as an established couple on a camping trip that goes terribly wrong, amongst several other ongoing problems. These were some of the first Hartmon fics I read and I think some of the descriptions of Cisco's vibes influenced how I write them too. While I think there was intended to be a third entry to the series, it never manifested and given that one of Embrosia's other Hartmon fics is unfinished, it's unlikely to ever be written. But the two stories the series does have are really good and I've re-read them more than a few times. The stories definitely have lots of whump in them for poor Cisco and Hartley, but they get to comfort each other after so it's alright. ;)

So Happy Together by pinegreenapples When Cisco tells his beloved, but still a busy body, cousin that he's got a boyfriend... Hartley Rathaway. Who, of course, is really Cisco's workplace rival... This one is really cute and Cisco's cousin is actually pretty fun, though she's worse than my sister was about trying to play matchmaker. It's got fake dating and rivals to lovers tropes in play and plenty of fluff.

"Got You Right Where I Want You" and Other Cliches by The_Heart_Of_Leo In which Cisco and Hartley enjoy some sexy, sexy roleplay as hero and villain. Absolutely deserves its Explicit rating as the entire thing is smut. And the two of them checking in with each other during the scene is just... <3

New Conditions by AssistedRealityInterface To quote the actual summary: "Hartley got disowned for being queer six months ago. He's still trying to work out the decades of abuse that preceded all of that. Cisco helps, and heals." Hartley is dealing with some heartbreakingly awful internalized homophobia and Cisco's probably dealing with a little internalized ableism too, but Cisco helps Hartley start to find some peace within himself and it's all just... very sweet.

Siren Song by ironyruinedmylife In which Hartley's enhanced hearing isn't his only power - he's got charmspeak too. He's also somehow become the parental figure to a number of street kids and Iris West's newest friend, though he'd like to pretend he's just striking at Barry through Iris for the sake of his villain cred. It's a bit crack-fic feeling in tone in places, but that just lends to the charm. That being said, there's a child death in there, so if you read it be prepared.

Ghosting by @fezwearingjellybananas Hartley buys a haunted house and, desperate for help fixing it up, turns to Cisco. After getting over the fact that Hartley's asking him for help, Cisco figures he can help Hartley fix the place up and debunk the haunting. I love them trying to be all scientific about trying to disprove the ghosts while clearly something supernatural is going on. The slow build up of their relationship is cute too

Between Hope and Fear by @purpleyin Takes place during the pandemic so it gets pretty heavy; very much an angst with a happy ending sort of story. Hartley's very sweet, if seriously over stressed, during the whole thing. I'm pretty sure this made me cry the first time I read it.

@hartmonfest that's a wrap for me on giving story recs. Though there are certainly plenty more excellent Cisco/Hartley stories out there to choose from. :D

The Rogues Earth Two Aesthetics+ Headcanons, in honour of my birthday. From top to bottom SAM SCUDDER is the bodyguard to ROSALIND DILLON, one of Central City's highest players. While he originally aimed to be mayor, he took his bets and unhappily stayed in his position as Leonard's driver. He is also dating MARK MARDON. AXEL WALKER was kicked out of his house. After seeing him, Len bought him in and helped him back on his feet. He now has a permanent job as an explosives analyst (cred to @peppersandcats) at the CCPD due to his knowledge in this field. HARTLEY RATHAWAY is the heir to one of the richest families in Central City, but being the heir means he must keep his mouth shut. Fortunately, being unnoticed by nearly all of his self obsessed family members means he can plot an uprising. He is also a photographer. ROY BIVOLO suffered from a neglectful childhood, and now only depends on himself. He works for the CCPD as a sketch advisor, but longs to paint for fun. He often bottles up his frustration at the younger CCPD members- especially Axel. SHAWNA BAEZ is one of the members of the illegal Metahuman Task Force. Nicknamed Boo by her peers she is known for her ability to appear seemingly out of nowhere. Despite being the coldest member of the group, her weakness is blatant: Rosa and Lisa, her girlfriends. LISA SNART may be the mayors sister, but that doesn't mean she follows the rules. With a love for luxury, and a desire for justice, Lisa opened the Illegal Metahuman Task Force with her girlfriends, an organisation which somehow never makes it to the mayors ears. She is also a talented ice skater, and in love with Rosa and Shawna ROSA DILLON is the queen of Central City's underworld. She is very ambitious, always learning who's ahead and what their weaknesses are so she could take them down. Unfortunately, one such target was Leonard Snart, and instead of taking him down, she fell in love with his sister, and Lisa's bodyguard. She later joined the illegal taskforce after an assault from a speedster. After the death of his beloved brother, MARK MARDON fell off his feet for a while, investing in petty revenge schemes, bank heists and murder. After a brief arrest, Mark met Mick Rory who mentored him in being a body guard and channelling his anger onto something useful. Mark is now a meteorologist, and a very good one. He is now dating SAM SCUDDER. MICK RORY is Leonard's body guard. After discovering he was a meta with the ability to heat his limbs up to flame, Mick was appointed body guard. At first, he didn't like Leonard, but quickly grew to knew him. Mick suffers from pyromania, but Len helps him. He is also responsible for bringing many of the "children" into Len's coop. LEN SNART is the mayor of Central City. After being abused by his father, Len decided that he wanted to give Lisa at least one male role model in her life and aimed to be a good citizen, even winning position as mayor. Despite this, he gets very anxious around social settings, and usually either Lisa or Mick are there with him to prevent him from getting too overwhelmed. He genuinely tries to do what is best for Central, but can be petty. He also has a bad habit of ending up with more potential criminals in his family than he thought he'd have. Ever. But the ten will work out how to make this work.
