Will Ferrell: ‘If the Trans Community Is a Threat to You, Then It Stems From Not Being Confident or Safe With Yourself’
“There is hatred out there,” Ferrell told The Independent. “It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. … But I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I don’t know why Harper is threatening to me.”
“It’s so strange to me, because Harper is finally… her,” he added. “She’s finally who she was always meant to be. Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebody’s happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.”

I watched WILL & HARPER last night on Netflix. Absolutely one of the best movies of the year. Painful to watch at times, but also insightful and heartwarming - two words I never thought I'd use about a Will Ferrell movie, but here we are.

Rowan Ashley Smith at The Advocate:
"Why does transphobia exist?" is a large question with many even larger and more multifaceted answers. One such answer was recently supplied by comedian and actor Will Ferrell in a new interview with The Independent. "Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebody’s happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.” Period! The interview was with Ferrell and Harper Steele, his former Saturday Night Live collaborator and close friend of 30 years. Steele came out as trans in 2022, after which she and Ferrell decided to take a cross country road trip together. The pair were accompanied by filmmaker Josh Greenbaum, who turned the journey into the new documentary film Will & Harper. After a sensational debut at Sundance earlier this year, the film was picked up by Netflix, where it is now available to stream starting today.
So a question like, "Why does transphobia exist?" is one that Ferrell has been contemplating a lot as of late. He responded, "I think we fear what we do not know." It's an excellent response. It brings to mind Harvey Milk's Gay Freedom Day speech from 1978, delivered less than a year before his assassination. In the speech, Milk called on the LGBTQ+ community to, "Come out to your neighbors, to your coworkers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. Come out only to the people you know, and who know you. Not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths, destroy the lies and distortions."
In an interview with UK paper The Independent, actor Will Ferrell gave an excellent answer to the “why does transphobia exist?” question: “If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.” 🏳️‍⚧️

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele met at Saturday Night Live where Harper was a writer and Will one of the comedian actors. They became best friends. Then 3 years ago, Harper sent an email to announce that she's transitioning.
Ferrell had zero knowledge about the trans community but was committed to supporting his friend. They took a cross-country road trip together and filmed it, which allowed Ferrell to ask question to understand better, and for Steele to discuss this journey. This documentary is titled Will & Harper and will be debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
I love that this is the way that Will Ferrell reacted, wanting to spend time with his friend, listening & learning, and wanting to build greater understanding.

I haven't seen anyone talking about it yet since it's such a new drop- but Will Farrell is going to be doing a road trip movie with Harper Steele (She/Her) who was a lead writer on SNL back in the day and has recently publicly come out <3 Just thought everyone should see something nice about trans folk this year.

I think there's a life lesson for people to learn here. I think it's a lesson of kindness and friendship. More so, to be kind to people who's lives you might not understand, but to be kind to them. Be humane. Let people live their lives on their own terms.
Just shake someone's hand like you would anyone. Say hello or good afternoon. They're a human being like you. They have feelings and deserve to live any life they feel.
BE KIND. That's all it takes.
