A lot of people pointed out in my first poll that some of the songs included are objectively pretty popular and I agree — we can go deeper

So here’s a second attempt:

Got a few asks which served as a reminder that a while ago, I promised you guys some album reviews! Let's do a couple now.

Homestuck's first album features a lot of songs that we're going to see remixed later on. We've already heard quite a few versions of Showtime and Sburban Jungle, and it seems like a lot of the comic's more 'iconic' songs came from here.

This is a very 'video-gamey' album, featuring songs like Harlequin and Showtime (Original Mix) - which makes sense, since Act 1 was when the comic was trying its hardest to be a video game parody.

My overall impression is that if this was any other comic, this would be an excellent soundtrack - but because this is Homestuck, it serves as excellent raw material for the fantastic soundtrack we're going to be getting later on.

Top tracks: Sburban Jungle (Brief Mix), Showtime (Original Mix), Skies of Skaia, Aggrieve and Sburban Countdown, which I previously praised for how well it evoked the mood of its scene.

Vol. 2 is a nice evolution of the musical style we first heard in the previous volume. It's clear the music team were getting the hang of the 'sound' of Homestuck by point, and it shows.

The second half of Harlequin (Rock Version) is great, and I’m sad it didn’t show up in the animation. Upward Movement’s intro is also new, and I didn’t recognize the song at first. It’s very different from the comic version, and feels a lot more experimental.

This album features four Bill Bolin tracks - several of which were referenced later on, by tracks that are still featured in the comic. I wonder if that was controversial?

This album also features several of the tracks from Jade's FreshJamz account, which the kids canonically produced together. They're definitely newbie tracks, but they have a lot of potential. Hopefully they'll return to this endeavor when we're done with all this Sburb nonsense, because this is clearly where their real talent lies.

Top tracks: Upward Movement, Explore, and Jade's sick bassline from Verdancy.

Vol. 3 features more FreshJamz tracks and a few new remixes. I particularly like Harleboss, a boss remix of a track that probably wasn't intended to have a boss remix. It sounds like the theme for a bar fight in a tavern run by clowns.

Dissension is excellent. It sounds awfully mournful for a Guardian battle track, until you take a closer look at Grandpa, and realize why it has the tone it does. We're also treated to a remix of Dissension, which sounds like the track that would play if Jade fought a living Grandpa. That's an AU I'd love to see.

Top tracks: Dissension (Remix), Ohgodwhat (Remix), and Pony Chorale - a track whose final few seconds might just have featured Rose's canonical voice.

I know I've been told not to but I finally started it since I had the time.

I'm listening to Homestuck. I'll get that one request done in maybe a few days? (Whenever I finish it and somewhat understand it, though I think the point is to not-)

I'm finishing up Act 3, oh boy.

It's great, confusing but great. Although from what I've seen the point is to feel that way.

It's comedic, you can't quite take it seriously all the time as I don't think that's the point.

The OST is fantastic, the art is iconic (?), I see why Tumblr is obsessed with it?

Favorite song currently is probably the Harleboss theme.

Like I said, a few people said not to get into it, but some said to.

So, my thoughts so far? Good stuff.

If I have anything else to say going forward I'll reblog this.

0:25 - With a little help, John does better this time. That's because the most important themes of Homestuck are teamwork and friendship. In fact, the most important themes of every work of fiction are teamwork and friendship. Don't ever be fooled into thinking otherwise.

0:38 - John takes a hunger trunk to the kisser. This is what John's dad would regard as a quality character building experience. If he were watching, he would be stroking his chin in fatherly approval.

0:43 - Nanna's phantom oven doubles as a GRANDSON LAUNCHER. Actually, there are more ovens that physically contain characters in the story than there are ovens which don't.

0:58 - Cue the shot of John connecting with a pogo hammer blow while random bathtub is in frame behind him.

1:11 - LOOK AT ALL THAT GODDAMN GRIST. One of the keys to showing advancement through a long mock-game in the form of an illustrated story is not to show every grueling milestone of achievement, every level gained or every treasure collected, but to at least show major incremental advancements are POSSIBLE. Like so. And then the imagination can fill in the blanks with many more of the types of windfalls we just saw. So much later when John is sitting on a huge pile of grist we can just say, oh yeah, looks like John killed about a thousand ogres for all that loot.

So in your reading of Homestuck, has there been anything that has taken you by surprised or been unexpected?

You see people's takes and views on the comic floating about the undercurrent of Tumblr, but they're very colored by the fact that EVERYONE used to be into Homestuck and the accompanying group cringe of it all. Some parts just don't translate and I'm wondering your experiences in all this.

A lot of things actually! It started with the game SBURB which felt like a reality bending version of Sims first and then we had a meteor hitting and it first felt like it was the game's doing, but it wasn't. And now, 3k pages later, I got surprised a lot. By Dave being a lot deeper than I first though, by learning about Jade's superpower, I was surprised by the quality of the music which I first really noticed how good it is during the Harleboss animation. I got surprised when Karkat appeared the first time as grey text. I got surprised when Dream Jade died, when John made the paradox babies, when I learned about Dave's time travel powers. I am surprised by the fact that the trolls still accept Vriska around even though her list of crimes gets longer and longer. And the newest surprise was that Kanaya and Feferi died and it seems to be permanent. Why would you kill some of the best troll girls?! But nothing surprised me more than the squiddles animation. WOAH; WTF! It probably is a breath of fresh air to see the comic through someone's eyes who doesn't know about the fanbase and goes in like completely blind.

Harlequin was awesome, and was quite a popular source for remixing the theme (it still is) so this was my early attempt.

The soundfont is actually a FF6 SNES font I found somewhere (At lot of people got it from the choir). The SNES soundfont choice was taken from a kind of natural evolution the music was taking from the earlier Vol 1 8-bi to 16-bit style music.

Not much to say on this one except it was quite a stereotypical 'Epic' boss battle theme - Choirs, church organs, bells, guitar and fast drums.

Author commentary:

The particular configuration of reminders she's referring to is on her pinky, where two black strings sandwich a blue string. The blue one represents John, and the black ones represent the two ogres surrounding him. I guess she put those there so she could remind herself that in this point of the story, John is getting owned by a couple of ogres? That's definitely something she would want to remember, especially since she can't do anything about it, and doesn't do anything about it. But the point is, SHE REMEMBERED!

0:11 - Behold, the mighty pogo hammer. Once, John's dangerous childhood nemesis in the form of the backyard pogo ride. Now, a similarly self-jeopardizing implement of only marginal combat value. Just think how easily one misfiring BONG could send him launching off the roof, or maybe just send the hammer careening back in his face?

0:25 - Consider how poignant it is that John spends this infinitely looping battle getting demolished by familiar items from his childhood? First, getting clobbered by the huge heirloom joke book left to him by his grandma, and then getting lassoed by the old tire swing from his front yard, which surely brought him years of joy. How poignant is that? Way, way poignant.

0:33 - This is actually very similar to a move that someone does in an old Street Fighter game. I honestly don't remember if that's where I got the idea for it though. I probably just asked myself "how's a huge dude gonna take out some trash with a tire swing?" And correctly determined there was literally only one way it could be done.

0:36 - The Crude Ogres may be giant bullying assholes, but you really have to admire their teamwork.

0:44 - Nannasprite has healing powers of course. It's unclear whether other sprites have these powers, as she's the only one who exhibits them. But then, it makes sense that she would have these abilities, since in a different world she is the Maid of Life. There you go, some more dots were just connected for you. You now understand nearly 1% of Homestuck.

0:47 - The battle then loops like that eternally, with John being dealt the same savage beating only to be revived by Nannasprite and sent back in for more abuse. His suffering is limited only by your willingness to watch it for hours, or failing that, leaving it open in your browser and forgetting about it for days. :(

Makin: The tire swing attack Hussie mentioned was based on Birdie's Murderer Chain attack from the Street Fighter Alpha series.
