Magnai puffed out his chest as he walked through the Dotharl settlement, seeking an audience with Sadu. Under his arm, he carried a small parcel, a present for the Eorzean Starlight Festival he'd heard of from the Scions. Spotting the silver haired figure in the distance, he approached and held out the clumsily wrapped in brown paper with binding it in a loose bow.
Sadu looked at the package and then back to Magnai, “Why have you brought me your trash?”
“It’s a present for that Eorzean winter holiday ! Just open it, “ he insisted.
The Dotharl leader narrowed her eyes then ripped it from his grasp before tearing into the package. Sadu paused as she unwound carefully folded tissue paper, becoming increasingly delicate with the present once she felt the lightness of it outside the box.
Magnai watched with wide eyes as Sadu lifted up an ornate tortoise shell comb that had been painted pearl white and a blue that matched her eyes. “What possessed you to think I'd want such a bauble!?”
Magnai was taken aback a bit, not sure what he was expecting but certainly not her usual ire. “For your beautiful hair of course!”
“Do you not think me capable of tending to my own body!?”
“N-No! I got it for you so that you would not cut and sell it for me!”
Sadu glowered, “Why would you think I'd ever do anything for you?”
“My retainer chanced upon you and the Khagan at Reunion and heard you as you discussed purchasing an expensive wet stone! He swore he heard you say it would be perfect for my axe but you'd have to sell your hair to afford it! I couldn't stand the thought of you doing so, so in the spirit of giving I sold my axe to get a comb for your beautiful hair.”
Sadu stared in silence for quite some time before starting to howl with laughter, needing to brace herself upon her camp pole to keep from toppling over. “You thought…I would…! For you Little Sun!? I said the stone would be worth a *hare* in passing to Cirinna estimation of what it might be worth and only as a thought to what might give you an edge in battle. Not that an improvement in weapon would give you the skill to best me.”
Magnai sunk to his knees, eyes wide. “M-My axe. I sold my axe!”
Sadu continued to laugh, well after Magnai managed to pick himself up and return to the Dawn Throne in defeat. Come Starlight morning though a present did appear, his axe returned along with a note from Sadu wishing him “A Merry Whatever”. His retainers kept that it was scrawled in the Khagan’s handwriting to themselves.
Pontypridd, Wales bi-lingual alt-rock trio CHROMA are pleased to reveal the official video for their new single ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ out now via Alcopop! Records.
The news comes ahead of a huge support slot with Foo Fighters for the band this week, and they also support Newport comedy hip hop troupe Goldie Lookin Chain on their forthcoming 2024 headline dates later this year, with limited tickets remaining.
The track is the latest to be taken from the band’s gigantic Alcopop! Records 2023 debut album Ask For Angela.
Commenting on the single, vocalist Katie Hall said: "This song is about limerence. It’s a new word I’ve learnt from the Lalala Let Me Explain podcast. It means to be emotionally and romantically infatuated with someone. It’s like when you have an intense crush on someone who’s not good for you. It’s not necessarily because they're a bad person, it’s because you’re in a bad place so you try to mask your problems with love. In an age of modern technology, love and dating seems disposable. When I fall into limerence it’s usually because I feel lonely. I think it’s something a lot of people go through. We wanted to write a punk song about turbulent love that people could maybe relate to."
The track comes with an official music video directed by Ren Faulkner, with artistic direction from the band's Katie Hall, movement director Bronwen Wilson Rashard, hair and makeup by Yasmine Davies, featuring model Emily Koko, styling by Alaw Griffiths and clothes by Rosie Evans.
“One of the coolest things about being in a band is being able to creatively direct your own music video,” says Hall of the challenge. “The idea for ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ came from a hinge date I went on in Port Talbot. I’ve always been fascinated by the steel works every time we drove past that area as a kid, and it’s been on my music video bucket list.”
“On the date we chatted a lot about the steelworks closing. It’s an estimated 20,000 jobs in the area. It’s hard to think of the pressure this puts families under during a cost of living crisis. I think Port Talbot is lush, the people and the place. The video also features Welsh designer Rosie Evans' clothes. I love Rosie’s work, and it’s been a dream of mine for some time to wear one of her corsets.”
Recorded at Giant Wafer Studios, Llanbadarn Fynydd in the heart of Wales, CHROMA’s much lauded debut was produced and mixed by Steffan Pringle (Adwaith, Future of the Left, Boy Azooga) and mastered by Tom Langrish at E1 Mastering (IDLES, Fontaines D.C, DITZ) in London.
The band recently presented an episode of S4C’s returning TV series Curadur, with Hall inviting some of her favourite bands and artists to join her Clwb Cysgu Cwl (Sleepover Club). Featuring performances from The Joy Formidable, Panic Shack and of course Chroma, the episode is available on catch-up via BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic.
Riding high on a run of packed shows at SXSW Festival, FOCUS Wales, and a support slot with The Mysterines, the band announced their signing to Alcopop! Records in early 2023 and were recently hand-picked to support legendary US rockers Foo Fighters at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester on 15th June 2024 alongside Courtney Barnett. They also played further shows alongside Bob Vylan and more.
The trio have just been announced as one of the latest patrons of the Music Venue Trust, and will support the work of the charity in sharing the importance of Grassroots Music Venues and their crucial role in the music industry's ecosystem.

WHEN IS JANMASHTAMI IN 2023? | HISTORY, IMPORTANCE & PUJA VIDHI
Reading Time- 7 Mins
Janmashtami, one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. With its roots in ancient Indian mythology and rich cultural significance, Janmashtami is observed with great fervor and devotion across the country. Krishna devotees all over the world are confused as to when the actual celebration of the festival is. Is the auspicious day falling on the 6th or 7th of September? Don’t worry, we are here to clear up your confusion:
Janmashtami falls on the eighth day of the Bhadrapada month and is also known as Gokulashtami. In 2023, this auspicious festival will be celebrated on September 7th (Thursday) and is anticipated to be a joyous occasion for millions of devotees.
Historical and Mythological Significance:
At the core of Krishna's devotion lies an admiration for his multifaceted persona. Lord Krishna is not just a deity but a reservoir of virtues that encompass the realms of love, wisdom, playfulness, courage, and compassion. It is this multi-dimensional nature that captures the hearts of his followers, drawing them into a world of unconditional love and unwavering faith.
The story of Janmashtami revolves around the divine life of Lord Krishna, born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. Due to a prophecy that he would be slain by his maternal uncle, the evil King Kansa, Krishna was secretly transported to Gokul and raised by his foster parents, Yashoda and Nanda. The festival not only celebrates his birth but also commemorates his heroic deeds, teachings, and divine love.
Relevance in Modern Times:
The teachings of Lord Krishna, as elucidated in the Bhagavad Gita, continue to resonate with people across generations. His philosophy of duty, righteousness, and detachment serves as a guiding light in navigating the complexities of life. Janmashtami serves as an annual reminder of these timeless teachings, encouraging devotees to strive for spiritual growth and self-realization.
The supreme God's devotion to dharma (righteousness) is another cherished aspect of his character. Through his own life experiences, Krishna showcases that upholding dharma requires courage, integrity, and a deep understanding of the bigger cosmic picture. His teachings emphasize the importance of fighting for justice and truth, even in the face of adversity.
Celebrations and Rituals:
Janmashtami is celebrated with immense enthusiasm and devotion. The festivities commence with elaborate preparations, including decorating homes and temples with flowers and colorful rangoli. Devotees fast throughout the day, breaking it only at midnight when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. The main rituals include:
Krishna Jhula Decoration: A swing (jhula) is adorned with flowers and decorations, symbolizing the cradle in which the infant Krishna was rocked.
Singing Bhajans and Kirtans: Devotees gather in temples to sing devotional songs (bhajans) and engage in kirtans (spiritual chants) that recount the life and deeds of Lord Krishna.
Midnight Abhishek: The highlight of Janmashtami is the midnight Abhishek (ritual bath) performed with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and water. This is followed by the ceremonial placing of the idol in the cradle amidst the chanting of mantras.
Puja Procedure:
Performing the Janmashtami puja at home can be a deeply spiritual experience. Here's a simplified puja procedure:
Cleanse: Begin by purifying yourself through a bath and wearing clean clothes.
Idol Preparation: Set up an idol or picture of Lord Krishna on an altar, adorned with flowers and decorations.
Offerings: Offer fruits, sweets, and other vegetarian delicacies to Lord Krishna.
Aarti: Light a ghee lamp and perform an aarti (circular movement of the lamp) while singing devotional songs.
Chanting: Recite Krishna mantras or the Hare Krishna Mahamantra to invoke the divine energy.
Midnight Celebration: Stay awake until midnight, meditating or engaging in devotional activities. At midnight, perform the abhishek and offer prayers.
Distribution of Prasad: Share the blessed Prasad with family and friends.
Janmashtami, beyond being a celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, serves as a platform for spiritual growth, cultural unity, and devotion. It teaches us the importance of righteousness, love, and selfless action, making it more than just a religious event. As 2023's Janmashtami approaches, let us embrace the festival's teachings and celebrate with reverence and joy, connecting with the divine essence that resides within us all.
The essence of Janmashtami extends beyond mere ritualistic celebrations. It is a reminder to embrace Krishna's teachings in everyday life, to love unconditionally, to fulfill duties with dedication, and to rise above the challenges with unwavering faith. Krishna's life is a mirror reflecting the journey of every individual seeking truth, purpose, and a deeper understanding of existence.

We consider ourselves lucky to have the immense creative invention and skill of Bettina Reeves and Mayumi Takahagi to hand make all of our wonderful, bespoke Christmas decorations each year. They have been helping us since 2018 and each year have added to the themed decorations throughout the public areas and in our private function rooms.
From a beautiful Christmas tree made from swathes of glorious green fabric, silken pom poms and twinkling lights to a Havana-style Rum Shack in the Ballroom Bar, prancing hares, dainty robins, wise snowy owls and gold frosted wreaths made from entirely natural foraged materials, they have really allowed their imaginations to run wild and created some truly magical Festive displays for us.
Our first Bettina and Mayumi tree in production, 2018.
Finished tree in the foyer at The Angel, 2018.
The Rum Shack, created for Havana Nights parties, 2019.
A parliament of owls, 2020/2021.
Hares prancing in the Cellar, 2018.
A couple of weeks ago, Bettina and Mayumi held a decoration making workshop that staff and other helpers were invited to attend.
It was a lovely day, we sat together in the Ballroom and learnt how to make the beautiful birdsa and stars that adorn the displays in December.
We thought it was a shame to keep this all to ourselves and have written this exclusive guide to enable you to make decorations just like ours at home.
How to make an embroidered Christmas star decoration;
What you will need;
Felt in any colour you choose, we used white for our stars
Thin wadding
Embroidery needle and thread, again in any colour of your choice
Sequins for decoration
A4 sheet of card
Step 1
Cut a star shape, roughly 12cm diameter from the A4 sheet of card, this will be your guide for cutting out the shape of your decoration.
Step 2
Using the card star shape as your guide, cut out 2 star shapes from the felt and 1 from the thin wadding. Then, line up the 3 stars with the wadding in between the 2 felt stars
Step 3
Starting at one of the internal corners, blanket stitch all the way around the outside of the star in the coloured thread of your choice. Make sure to remember to split your embroidery thread strands so you have only 2 or 3
Step 4
Once you have stitched all the way around the outside of your star you are ready to get creative with decoration, use different coloured threads, sequins, beads or any other bits you like to create patterns on both sides of your star. Using a water erasable marker pen for guidance can be helpful, or chalk.
See the images below for some inspiration.
Step 5
Use the needs to thread a thicker length of embroidery thread or ribbon through one of the stars points for hanging and tie it in a knot.
Step 6
Hang it in pride of place on your Christmas tree!
Once you have mastered the simple star shape, you may want to move on to other shapes such as birds, see some photos below of bird shapes have embroidered for decorations too…
Here is a sheet to print for an easy guide to follow at home...
Tag us on social media to be in with a chance of winning an exclusive Angel Hotel Festive Season 2023 mug and tea towel set designed by Alexis Snell. Winners will be chosen on 23rd December 2023.

IDM phenomenon Fuera release evolutionary new single - 'Mariposa'
Just three and a bit minutes of European electronic dance music bliss, and definitely one that wouldn't be out of place on the festival circuit. Like a lot of European dance tunes it's sung in Fuera's native language; Italian. The Italian trio fuse together native sounds from IDM, ambient and dance. Mariposa is a dance gem

And it has all the sounds of an anthem alright, a very good one. R.E.T.R.O, the new single from Sam and is every bit upbeat, guaranteed to get you miming along. After taking a break the Yorkshire-based artist, this track marks a welcomereturn. Even though this one is of the post-Brit Pop era it sounds like it could fit in easily. Fabulous tune

THE SLEEPING SOULS - Release "Weathering The Storm" Track || + Announce UK Tour Dates in 2024
If I had only five words to describe Weathering The Storm it'd be this; cinematic, superb, incredible, haunting and captivating. As a song it has all the workings of not just an amazing rock song but something worthy of a cinematic usage. The video itself is just as amazing and you can sing to it as well. Has a storytelling element that weaves right through it

Jova Radevska and Mark Vernon, the musical duo that are the talent behind YOVA. Dreamcatchers is something of a haunting quality to it which you can feel the emotions of upset and inner turmoil in the words. In their own ways both Jova and Mark both sell this song, Mark with his instrumentals and Jova with her outstanding voice

"I was a great fan of Herbie Hancock’s 60’s music. Nick Maclean Quartet is very solid. « Convergence » is one of the best canadian albums of 2023 and should have chances to get a Juno."
- Denys Lelièvre, CKRL (Quebec City, Canada)
This October, the NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. BROWNMAN ALI celebrates the release of their hotly anticipated sophomore album CONVERGENCE. Led by fast-rising piano star NICK MACLEAN -- a 10x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto -- this contemplative yet thrilling quartet delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings. Maclean's quartet heavily features one of Canada's most provocative improvising trumpet players -- BROWNMAN ALI -- an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning jazz iconoclast who has been heralded as "Canada's preeminent jazz trumpet player" by New York City's Village Voice and is best known globally as the last trumpet player to play in the legendary jazz-hip-hop group GURU's JAZZMATAZZ. For this show, Ali & Maclean stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2 of Canada's top-tier 20-somethings: CHRIS PARNIS (in for Ben Duff) on upright bass, and PETROS ANAGNOSTAKOS on drums (in for Jacob Wutzke).
Copies of CONVERGENCE will be available for purchase at the show (physical and digital)
:: Nick Maclean - piano
:: Brownman Ali - trumpet
:: Chris Parnis - bass (in for Ben Duff)
:: Petros Anagnostakos - drums (in for Jacob Wutzke)
Come witness these four in full flight, this tour features many nights of deeply exploratory, hard-swinging modern-jazz audiences nation-wide will not want to miss.
