Obligatory "happy tu bshvat even though this blog and my life were both nature themed until I became a sellout" post. Trees are pretty cool.

Happy TU bShvat! Here are 3 things you should know:
1. TU bShvat is the new year or “birthday” of the trees!
2. Yesterday’s hostage situation was an undeniable act of ANTISEMITISM; the perpetrator chose to take Jews as hostages because he believed we control the world and could meet his demands.
3. It was the RABBI who freed himself and the two remaining hostages last night - this is important because the rabbi used skills he had learned in case of a situation like this, because situations like this are NOT unexpected to the Jewish community.

Tu Bshvat was greeted by a beautiful blood moon.
חג שמח!
Plant a tree today, or eat a new fruit, say the shehecheyanu and be happy!

I'm a dumb jew, what's tu bshvat?
Tu B’shvat is the Jewish New Year of the Trees! It occurs on the 15th of the month of Shevat, and it’s basically a big tree time and a celebration day!
Here are some of the customs for Tu B’shvat that I, as an Ashkenazi reform Jew, know about: having a Tu B’shvat Seder with four cups of wine/juice, eating the Shivat Haminim which are seven types of produce from Israel (I can’t remember them all, but they include dates, figs, barley, and pomegranates), and planting trees or plants/generally promoting ecological preservation and awareness.
here is a link that I found with a more detailed summary of Tu B’shvat: http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday8.htm (disclaimer: I have only read through this page on this site, and cannot speak for its other information!)
Happy Tu B’shvat, everybody! What are your holiday traditions?

One Day to Tu BShvat!
Psalms 1:1-3
(1) Happy is the man who has not followed the counsel of the wicked, or taken the path of sinners, or joined the company of the insolent; (2) rather, the teaching of the L-rd is his delight, and he studies that teaching day and night. (3) He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, whose foliage never fades, and whatever it produces thrives.

Happy Tu BShvat!
Just for Tu BShvat, the US will be seeing the first super blue blood moon since 1866. If you’re up to wake up at 5:50am!
And:
Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:1
(1) The four new years are: On the first of Nisan, the new year for the kings and for the festivals; On the first of Elul, the new year for the tithing of animals; Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon say, on the first of Tishrei. On the first of Tishrei, the new year for years, for the Sabbatical years and for the Jubilee years and for the planting and for the vegetables. On the first of Shevat, the new year for the trees according to the words of the House of Shammai; The House of Hillel says, on the fifteenth thereof.
