[010212] Nell - Talk Talk Interview (donga.com) (translation)
The band Nell borrowed their name from the Jodie Foster movie, and consists of four members of the same age. The first impression of Jung Jaewon (drums), Kim Jongwan (vocals and guitar), Lee Jaekyung (guitar) and Lee Junghoon (bass) of Nell that came to our office is that of normal, unfabricated young people from the streets of Seoul. They released their debut album 'Reflection of Nell' last year, and expressed strong disapproval at being equated with English rock band Radiohead. In the third number of Under Relay, they told of their views on music and their plans for the future.
Q: I'm curious about what your everyday life looks like these days. Jaewon: All we do is practice and play in clubs around Daehakno and Hongdae every now and again. Those of us still in school are on vacation, and we're considering working on our music full-time.
Q: Radiohead are famous around the country primarily for their song 'Creep', but what is the reason you don't like being compared to them? Jongwan: We really like Radiohead. But we just can't agree with someone saying "you sound like so and so". Can't our music be heard and felt without any thoughts?
Q: I feel that your sound of starting out calm before raging like a storm is very unusual, but what is Nell's music really? Jaekyung: You can think of it as a mix of alternative rock and pop with lyrical melodies as a base. We don't make music for the listener. We're just going for the sound we enjoy.
Q: 'Take Me With', 'It's like that anyway', 'Trash', 'Tamed' etc expresses concise keywords like change, separation, distrust, pain etc. What did you want to say through them? Jongwan: I didn't want to try and sound cool or give off a poetic feeling. I just expressed the worries and dilemmas people our age experience in a clean way. I wrote the music and lyrics for this album, but we collected every member's musical individuality by working on the arrangement all together.
Q: How did you feel when you released your first album, and how has that changed until now? Junghoon: We were very proud to hold the product of our work in our hands at such a young age. Being able to record in a proper studio and such is something most indie bands don't get to do. But our situation is a bit different now. There's constantly being compared to others, and the reality of the soulless music industry is frustrating.
Q: What is the reality of the soulless music industry? Jaewon: That there's no place for us to perform. Mainstream music is mostly all similar, so it's easy to get sick of it, whereas there's no good place for singers to perform live. Junghoon: It feels like there are no songs other than dance music. If there was a stage where indie bands could show the full extent of their talents, a more varied music scene could develop.
Q: What does Nell want to show in the future? Jongwan: Rather than an 'indie band', we wish we could be seen as another part of the music industry. To us, music is a highly personal creation and nobody knows how we might change in the future. Even though we will of course work hard to expand our sound.
Q: Korean and international musicians you like? Nell: For international bands we like Muse and Kent. For Korean musicians, Lee Seunghwan, Lee Seungcheol and Kim Hyeoncheol. We think they're all singer-songwriters with their own unique color.
Q: How far have you come in the preparations for your second album and the upcoming concert? Nell: We'e all continuously working on our music. We've finished about 8 songs, but it's still hard to say what kind of music it is. We will hold a concert at Feedback in Hongdae this month on the 24th at 7.
Q: Any ending words? And please recommend another good indie band. Nell: We hope you will listen to our music as it is. A good musician? We'd like to recommend Rainy Sun, Coremagazine and Hanumpa, who are currently preparing their debut album.
Feel free to use, but please credit Nellpire.

K-pop Indie Gem: Hanumpa
From the hustle and bustle of Seoul comes a band that’s managed to capture the sounds inherent in the ever-expanding capital city. Hanumpa came on to the scene fifteen years ago and have managed to create music that’s unpredictable, powerful, and as vibrant and diverse as Korean culture itself. Comprised of lead singer, guitarist, and morin khuur player Lee Jeong-hoon, guitarist Yoon Soo-yeong, drummer Kim Yoon-tae, and bassist Song Hyun-jo, Hanumpa is most akin to a surprise party: shockingly unexpected.
