Choc dans une amérique blanche avant la gloire d'internet et du mass-media où le héros du roman n'est pas désœuvré et tue.

On ne demande pas l'avis des auteurs d'une même maison d'édition si l'on doit ou non publier ce genre d'ouvrages. L'écrivain Norman Mailer (Le chant du bourreau. Un rêve américain.) prend position dans un long article paru dans la revue Mensuel : "...le plus grand mal, les vrais dégâts intellec- tuels que ce roman pourrait causer, ce sera de renforcer la thèse de Hannah Arendt sur la banalité du mal. C'est la banalité de Patrick Bateman qui lui donne son emprise sur le lecteur et qui confère à ce sinistre ouvrage sa force. Car, si Hannah Arendt a raison et si le mal est banal, alors cela est infiniment pire que d'admettre, au contraire, que le mal est satanique. Le prolongement de la thèse d'Arendt, c'est que nous sommes absurdes et que Dieu et le Diable ne se font pas la guerre sur l'avenir de l'humanité...

Quelle œuvre dérangeante ! Elle est trop vide, humainement parlant, pour qu'on la qualifie de mauvaise, mais elle fait monter si haut l'enjeu qu'on n'arrive plus à évaluer l'ampleur du risque.

Parier sans voir est une activité creuse et ce roman tournoie au centre même de cet espace vide."
