Eurovision 2005 - Number 21 - I'Dees - "Yeah, yeah"
youtube
I'Dees are a band who have already had their moment in the spotlight. In 2000, their career was launched on Finnish music talent show Tie tähtiin (The Road to the Stars). It was a bit of an unusual show in that the competitors were judged on how well they could imitate famous singers. They didn't win, but their appearance generated many fans - and led directly to a big hit single.
Time sent them to the upper ends of the Finnish charts in 2001. Their following single and their first album also charted. It looked like their career as a four-piece female band was set. However, right at that moment of triumph, one of the members, Elina Silander, left the band and their next album flopped. All their subsequent singles were left floundering on the shelves of records stores. They played with their image and their sound, but nothing reignited their success.
Time for a national final appearance then. In heat one of Euroviisut they launched Yeah, Yeah. It's a fast rocky pop song about wanting someone who frankly shouldn't be on the agenda, but nevertheless failing to resist those urges. All three of the band take vocals and all of them are great. I'Dees can sing. Despite the breathless pace of the lyric, it causes them no problems, although the choreography does occasionally interfere with the camera angles. Some better blocking required there.
Given that this is essentially a combination of the existing trend for girl pop along with the emerging desire for something rockier, it would have been perfect. It did progress in second place from the heat, but in the final I'Dees found themselves in fifth of the twelve songs.
It proved to be the end of the band and they split later in the year. The members of the band Hanna Silander, Niina Sinkkonen and Lotte Svartsjö remained in the music biz, providing a backing vocal unit, often singing together behind other bands. Hanna has appeared on the Finnish version of the Voice - where she wasn't recognised by any of the judges.
Here's one of their later singles, Brave and Optimistic Girl
