The whole concept of this Scandinavian bolthole is perfectly summed up by the translation of Ett Hem – ‘at home’ – which was converted from a private residence in 2012. Treating her staff and guests as an extension of her own family, Jeanette’s down to earth approach to the domestic sphere has resulted in the epitome of lived-in luxury.

With interiors by British designer Isle Crawford of Studioisle, the now ubiquitous phrase Scandi-chic should really be reserved for the likes of Ett Hem – with its eclectically arranged library, sheepskin throws and scented candles scattered around the low-key living room, roaring fireplaces in the winter and vases filled with flowers in the summer. Any sense of formality has been thrown out of the early 20th-century windows, in an atmosphere where guests are not only invited to relax, but to fully make themselves at home.

Inspiration has always been nature, travels, food, wine, fashion, design, art and culture in general. I have never been a believer in trends, instead I rely on timelessness.

How do you think your hotel stands apart from other boutique hotels?
Ett Hem is a small establishment with only twelve rooms. With us, you always get a personal engagement from my staff and myself. We see ourselves as a “family” and consider all guests to be close friends of the house. Everybody who works at Ett Hem is well educated, professional, dedicated and passionately service-minded. I have made sure my staff can devote extra time to all guests, more than what’s normally required and expected. At Ett Hem, we honour honesty and generosity, and we attend to all our guests with the same enthusiasm. I want everybody to feel safe, relaxed and well looked after.
If you only had 24 hours to get a taste for your hotel experience, what would you recommend a guest must do?
I would arrive at Ett Hem just before lunch, leave my bags and head out into the city. Have lunch at Sturehof downtown, take a walk around the beautiful island of Skeppsholmen, overlooking the Royal Palace and the Old Town. I would try to make a quick stop at either the Museum of Modern Art or the newly renovated National Museum. Head back “home” to Ett Hem late afternoon, right in time for our freshly baked cake, coffee or tea. Before dinner, enjoy the sauna or a massage in our relax room.
If possible, invite a few friends or colleagues for dinner. Pre-drinks are served in the living room, followed by dinner either in our lush conservatory, cosy library or in the kitchen where you will be able to see our amazing chefs in full action. Dinner is composed daily by our chefs, which is 100% based on local and seasonal produce. Dinner ends with a night cap in the living room, or over coffee and some board games.

Try to stay in rooms 2 or 5, both Junior Suites with a bath tub, fire place and small balcony. Mornings start with breakfast served by the table – tea, coffee, or fresh orange juice; freshly baked bread, homemade butter, jams, cheese and ham; yoghurt with homemade granola; fresh fruits and berries; eggs of your choice.
How would you describe your own perfect luxury experience?
I expect to be treated with respect and openness. I want to relax, feel comfortable and safe. Beauty inspires. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. Ignorance upsets me.
Do you have a vision for the future of the hotel?
We have managed to cope with the pandemic surprisingly well. I believe our small size and considerate care for every guest has helped us through these difficult times. To our great joy, local guests from Stockholm have found us and have been very supportive. We will continue to be grounded and true to our place, and a safe space for people to relax and be taken care of. Going forwards, we will work even more with our guests’ personal wellness and wellbeing. Ett Hem is constantly evolving and being refined.

Reading in bed just got more meta with Woolly, a print magazine launched by mattress maker Casper. Dedicated to “a curious exploration of comfort, wellness, and modern life,” the quarterly publication centers on the idea that sleep is the “third pillar of wellness” along with food and fitness.
Created by an in-house editorial team, with help from publishing company McSweeney’s, the content includes personal essays, comedic advice columns, and other stories about resting, relaxing, and recharging. The print magazine costs $12 per issue ordered via the website or purchased at Casper’s recently opened brick-and-mortar retail shops, while some copies are distributed to customers on delivery of their Casper mattresses.
Princess Cruises presents original romance stories (May)
For many readers, romance novels and vacations go hand in hand. And for those who enjoy love stories set on the high seas, Princess Cruises has stepped in with three free original stories. (The original cruise line featured on TV’s Love Boat between 1977 and 1986.) Teaming up with Amazon’s online romance community, Kindle Love Stories, Princess created the content ahead of a five-day Caribbean cruise that included meet and greets with the stories’ bestselling authors, book club discussions, and book signings.
And what about those who haven’t taken a Princess cruise? Since each of the three stories focuses on a couple who finds love aboard a cruise ship, Princess hopes to inspire more readers to plan a cruise vacation.

McDonald’s investigates the mystery of the sauce (August)
Fans of the Cartoon Network show Rick and Morty know the story: Last year, an episode of the series referenced a limited-edition Szechuan sauce made by McDonald’s in 1998 to promote the movie Mulan. McDonald’s decided to capitalize on the moment by re-releasing limited quantities of the sauce. It was a fiasco (an intentional one, some speculate). Supplies were too limited and, at some stores, fans fought and rioted. Many fans took to social media to voice their anger and disappointment.

The Sauce is a three-part investigative podcast produced by Studio@Gizmodo and Onion Labs in partnership with McDonald’s that tells the story of those 2017 events. According to the company, the podcast is a way to acknowledge and apologize for the mistake in a transparent and creative way.
Given the subject matter and McDonald’s involvement in the production, “investigative” is a term best used loosely. The tone is light-hearted and the podcast never refers to Rick and Morty by name. The podcast was released as another 20 million packets of Szechuan sauce hit McDonald’s stores. It’s content about a sauce promotion designed to promote more sauce. If you’re looking for a serious exploration of the dark side of fandom, look elsewhere. But if you’re in the mood for a fun (albeit one-sided) take on a pop culture moment, The Sauce hits the spot.

Sure, but one that’s on brand for a company known for its wacky content.

Financial services firm Charles Schwab is telling inspiring stories of people who have taken control of their future – reflecting a sentiment at the heart of financial planning. Told in partnership with video platform Vimeo, the stories are presented in several series of videos that answer a question such as Why This Road? and Why Not Now?

Bothered by the potholes in your neighborhood? Well, Domino’s is here to do what your local government can’t or won’t: pave the roads. Pizza lovers tired of having their pies jostled on the way home from Domino’s can nominate their town to receive funding to help repair the roads. The Paving for Pizza website features stats and testimonials from towns in California, Delaware, Georgia, and Texas where Domino’s came in to help.
Country Time takes a stand (November)
Lemonade stands: adorable summertime tradition or public health menace? While some might argue kids selling lemonade are as American as apple pie, local governments are cracking down on lemonade stands without the proper permits. Country Time Lemonade wanted to help.
The company created a team, called Legal-Ade, to help pay fines and permits for children who want to run their own lemonade stands. Country Time’s Legal-Ade paid for permits and fines up to $300 for stands that were fined in 2017 or 2018, or for permits purchased in 2018. A humorous video featuring adorable kids and tough-looking attorneys introduces the Legal-Ade team. “Tastes like justice,” says one of the attorneys after drinking his lemonade.
Mister Rogers movie partners with daily motivational service (November)
The feel-good Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? may leave some viewers looking for more of those positive vibes. They’ll be pleased to know that Shine, a service that sends daily motivational text messages to its subscribers, partnered with the movie to send texts inspired by Mister Rogers.
The Shine website, which focuses on “research-backed content around confidence, daily happiness, mental health, and productivity,” also includes a series of Won’t You Be My Neighbor? tie-in articles like 19 Things Mister Rogers Low-Key Taught Us About Self-Care and What Mister Rogers Taught Us: How to Radically Be Ourselves.

Has Conscious Consumption Peaked? Why It’s Not Saving The Earth, Honestly
Have you ever popped onto the Internet to search for an ethical, cruelty-free product only to find that everything available was way out of your price range? I’m talking $ 1,000+ Stella McCartney vegan handbags and $ 500 ethical lingerie. Or even “natural” lipsticks that cost more than your monthly phone bill and animal-friendly shoes that wouldn’t be worth the amount of wear you’d get from them before they fell apart.

The problem here isn’t simply that these products exist (at such an inflated price), but that many well-intentioned environmentalists recommend expensive purchases as the antidote for the environmental damage brought on by consumerism.
“You vote with your dollars” is a phrase thrown around loosely in consciously-minded communities. You hear vegans using this as an excuse to buy pricey, faux-leather boots and dine at upscale, health food cafes. Their thought is to buy better but not necessarily less, or for less money.
There is a $ 48 beauty and wellness tasting menu handpicked by the chef at Jean-Georges’s ABCV in Manhattan.
And while their reasoning may be valid to an extent, as demand does influence the market, there is also the reality that this is an approach driven by capitalism (i.e. an exploitative, exclusive, and often corrupt system). Yes–in theory, some companies are “better” and “holier” than others. They use organic resources and source materials from within a small proximity and pay their employees fair wages, and that is great. And there are definitely costs associated with running a morally-focused company that don’t exist in other types of production.
BUT, we cannot fail to acknowledge that buying name-brand, fair-trade, locally crafted goods is a privilege. At the best of times, the products cost more because they require more initial capital to make, and at the worst, they are so expensive because they are targeting a market who is likely to spend more on a purchase they think they can feel good about.
You may have noticed that most of the people romping around in $ 400 Rombaut trainers to spread the good word of “ethical consumption” are people who come from backgrounds of limited racial and social diversity. Yet in their minds, it seems, everyone can afford to drop hundreds or thousands on a quality product and if they don’t, then they’re living selfishly or unethically. To some, conscious consumption is the end-all-be-all, and an easy response to the nearly unavoidable issue of how, what, and where to buy.
The next topic of discussion, however, is how to grapple with ethics of the products we buy if spending our life savings on a non-essential isn’t an option.
I wouldn’t propose turning to fast fashion for a second–I think the impacts are far worse than the damage brought on by the privileged liberal elite and their consumerist agenda. But I do cherish the fact that I have found other ways to combat consumerism and its associated harm in my life, and that I do sometimes meet others on a similar path. Who appreciate the fact that eco-friendly shopping options exist, but also that they are not accessible for everyone.
In a perfect world, bloggers and social/environmental activists alike would be offering up alternatives like second-hand shopping as a means of limiting consumption and over-production. They would show their peers how rewarding it can be to find a vintage gem amongst masses or previously-owned items, or to buy a coat for $ 40 that would cost ten times as much new, or one that’s quality is superior to anything available in stores nowadays.
They would reference the early inhabitants of the land who made their own soaps and makeups and paints and dyes from naturally found ingredients. Not to then turn around and sell them on Etsy or hit a niche market, but because it was the practical, ethical, resourceful thing to do.
Again, even making your own products can be a privilege. It works under the assumption that someone has the time and ability to do so. But it is a substitute for more frivolous means of acquiring goods–and the more substitutes we can provide, the better.
There are times when we might have to go to Walmart to buy underwear because we don’t want to wear undergarments passed on from someone else, and more sustainable underwear is really expensive, and Walmart is right down the street whereas a slightly costlier but slightly more acceptable store is a drive or a bus or a train away, and we shouldn’t have to justify this decision or fall into shame because of it.
If we all just do what we can, focus on our own actions, and recognize that everyone has different standards of living and spending, then we can distinguish between the “better” and the “best.” We can accept that our interpretations of each are different than someone else’s, that consumption and ethicality are not so black and white–just because someone doesn’t do something one way, or live how you would choose to live, doesn’t mean they are wrong or bad or lesser-than.
I will admit that I can enjoy a good online browse. I have an appreciation of quality and aesthetic. Yet I also love a good flea market shop or dumpster dive. I know my monetary limitations, and I never want to impose those on others or have them imposed onto me. So I leave you with my plea for inclusivity–to stop acting like everyone has the means to live an idealistic, eco-conscious, Instagram-approved lifestyle and to cater to the large population of people who want and need alternatives.

Children aged seven to 13 can take part in Tante Marie’s 30 minute Kid’s Cookery Masterclass, running all weekend. They will be able to get stuck in to no-oven cooking, blending different combinations of dried fruits, nuts and chocolate to create scrummy little nutritious energy balls called “scrumbles”. Families can also get ready for out of this world family fun with The Gastronaut starring BBC’s Stefan Gates.
