Monday, April 18
Monday promised to be a sunnier day so we woke up early trying to get to the Kalalau trail before 6am. We parked at Hā’ena beach and then ran the half mile to the entrance because we were cutting it close. The road was so beautiful - moon next to Makana peak (also called Bali Hai) in the sunrise- seriously gorgeous. We reached about 20 yards from the ticket station just in time to catch up to some people trying to do the same thing in front of us. We also saw someone putting out cones at the station and and a group of about 5 people being turned away. Luckily the people we met had intel to go by way of the beach to the trail entrance. We wandered down a path towards the beach and reached the trail head as the sun was coming up. It was the perfect time to be there- so calm. It was very lucky we we were turned away from doing this hike on that first rainy day! It’s a tricky hike for sure and I think rain would make it dangerous. Lots of rock hopping and river crossing that can flash flood when it is raining. Our friends who guided us also hailed from the bay - Amy and Austin. We are indebted to them for showing us the way. We made other trail friends also, these three guys from Utah were throwing rocks at a tree getting oranges down and gave one to us. We made it all the way up to the water fall and scrambled up to a spot where you could watch it. Then we hiked back down and it started to rain a bit. Our legs started getting so tired. We thought it would be a 8 mile hike but with the walk from the parking lot and the detour along the beach we ended up hiking 14 miles.
Hirsh was now kind of Hangry so we tried to get food on the way home but everything was close! Then we went into town to a spot called Hanalei Gourment and got their last table but it turned out they were completely out of all vegetarian food! So then we went to this indian food truck and got much needed fuel so we could go back to Hanalei Bay. We thought "we're too tired to boogie board, we'll just read" then got there and decided "we must boogie board!"
For dinner we grabbed some frozen food and headed back to the hotel to watch Atlanta.

Hotline: (028) 38 33 37 37

Kauai North Shore Beaches - My Top Ten List - Hawaii
Did you know that the Garden Island has more sand beaches per mile of shoreline than any other major Hawaiian island? Kauai north shore beaches are so plentiful that you could be on the "Beach a Day" program for over a week and never leave the area. Some of these gems take effort to get to, but others are footsteps from where you park. Some offer a reef bottom environment for fabulous snorkeling, while others are best for swimming and/or catching waves. Starting with the far north end of the island, here are my top ten picks.
1. Ke'e Beach - Pictured Above
After a 15 month road closure, as a result of the 2018 Kauai Flood, Ke'e Beach is better than ever. This small, sandy beach used to be overly crowded with thousands of tourists driving to the end of the road, parking wherever they could, and embarking on the last stretch of sand before the Na Pali Coast. Now with new regulations limiting the number of parking spaces, Ke'e can be thoroughly enjoyed. There are shade trees, newly refurbished restrooms and a lifeguard stand. The lagoon has a shallow, sandy bottom for a little ways out and then a reef. On flat, calm days, schools of fish and turtles will entice you to swim just outside the reef. During the winter months, however, large swells make leaving the shallow, sandy area quite dangerous. Excess water in the lagoon causes currents in the reef opening on the left side of the beach. Ask the lifeguards if you are uncertain as to whether you should go out or not.
There are two ways to get to Ke'e Beach. A shuttle now runs from either Princeville or Hanalei to various stops along the last stretch of road, ending at Ke'e. If you prefer to drive your own vehicle, parking reservations must be purchased online. Information on how to go about buying shuttle tickets or getting parking reservations may be found in my blog: Update on Kauai Road Opening. Once you arrive at the parking lot, a wooden boardwalk takes you to the beach or to the entrance of the Kalalau Trail.
The Kalalau Trail is an eleven mile trail along the Na Pali Coast which ends at the Kalalau Valley. Permits are needed to hike the full trail (takes all day and is quite strenuous), however anyone with a day pass to Haena State Park (included in shuttle ticket or parking reservation) can walk part of the trail. Hanakapi'ai Beach (2 miles in) and Hanakapi'ai Falls (4 miles in) are favorites, but just going about 1/4 of a mile on the trail will bring you to some fabulous views down the coast. Therefore combining a walk, with time at Ke'e Beach, makes for a pretty great vacation day.
Google Map
2. Tunnels Beach
This long stretch of sandy beach, with a view of Makana Mountain (Bali Hai), is a snorkeler's dream. The water stays shallow over a huge reef which can actually be seen from space. Even in winter, waves break way outside, allowing for a snorkeling area that is typically quite safe. Scuba divers can be seen getting into the water here. They are diving down to the lava tubes, or tunnels, that are at deeper depths. Surfers and wind surfers catching the breaking waves in the distance are always fun to watch. Tunnels Beach is not for swimming, but snorkelers will get an eye full.
Parking is strictly enforced in the area. Parking tickets are $250. Many of the shortcuts have been closed. Now, your best bet is to take the North Shore Shuttle or park at Haena Beach Park, across from the Dry Cave, and walk to the right, down the beach. The parking lot fills up fast so plan to get there early. It is not easy walking through the deep, sometimes hot, sand to the perfect spot. If your goal is to see lots of tropical fish and then enjoy a fabulous view when you're done, Tunnels is a must.
Google Map
3. Lumahai Beach
Remember the scene in the movie, South Pacific, where “she’s going to wash that man right out of her hair?” That scene was filmed at Kahalahala Beach, which lies at the far right, or eastern end, of Lumahai Beach. This is a beach so scenic that it consistently makes the list of the most beautiful beaches in the world. During the calm months of summer, the crystal clear water gently rolls up to the shore creating a saltwater swimming pool. A large lava rock projects from the shore into the ocean, a favorite jumping off spot for the brave (obviously checking the depth of the water first). There are trees which provide shade as well. It’s idyllic; what you think of when you think of paradise. In the winter, however, it’s another story. Big swells cause waves to crash onto the shore. It is still beautiful but swimming can be dangerous. Use good judgement.
To get to this special spot, drive past Hanalei Bay heading north. As you drive up the first incline you’ll see cars parked along the side of the road. Park and find the path leading down the hill to the sand. It’s just a 3 to 4 minute walk but it can be slippery if wet. The beach is 100 feet below the road.
Caution: The other end of Lumahai Beach, next to the Lumahai River is not recommended for swimming nearly any time of the year. Strong currents have swept people out to sea. Parking and access are easy if you just want a place to enjoy the environment without going for a swim. I would suggest a good book and a walk along the shore.
Google Map
4. Hanalei Bay
Hanalei Bay actually consists of four beaches, two of which have lifeguard stations. This crescent shaped body of water, with a backdrop of lush green mountains and a newly refurbished pier, is a photographer’s dream. A sandy bottom, and gentle waves for most of the year, make this a very pleasurable place to swim and play in the water. Beginner surfers and boogie boarders can almost always find a good spot to learn and practice. More accomplished surfers wait for the winter swells or paddle out to the outer reefs. There is basically no shade so bring your reef-safe sunscreen and an umbrella.
There are four places to park around Hanalei Bay depending on what part of the bay appeals to you. Weke Road parallels the bay. At the south end of the road (turn right) there is a new parking lot which fronts the historic Hanalei Pier. Restrooms are currently being built. There is also a small dirt parking lot by the pavilion (also to your right), which will place you in the middle of the crescent with restrooms and a lifeguard stand. At the other end of Weke Road you can access two dirt parking lots by turning toward the bay on He’e or Ama’ama Road. These lots are not in the best shape with large pot holes. There are restrooms and a lifeguard stand here as well. The water tends to be a bit rougher in this area. It is known as Pine Trees and surfing competitions are held here every year.
Hanalei Bay is one of my favorite places to walk, especially in the early morning or just before sunset.
Google Maps
5. Pu’u Poa Beach
Pu’u Poa Beach is the sandy strip in front of The Princeville Hotel so sharing the space with hotel guests is a given. The reef comes fairly close to the shoreline, therefore its best use is for snorkeling. The views looking across the bay mouth to Lumahai Beach and the mountains are spectacular. If you want to expand your experience, consider purchasing a hotel day pass for the pool in order to swim and relax after your snorkeling adventure. A poolside bar and restaurant is there for you either way.
Parking is an issue. So, if you are staying close by, walk or ride a bike. Otherwise tip for valet parking at the hotel. You may access the beach by going through the hotel and taking the elevator down, or walking down a concrete path to the left of the hotel gate house and descending 191 steps.
Google Maps
6. Pali Ke Kua Beach, better known as Hideaways
Next to the Pu’u Poa Condominiums, and just before the gate house for The Princeville Hotel, is a tiny parking lot that is always full. Herein lies the problem with this excellent snorkeling beach, Hideaways. The path starts at the lot, descends the bluff with stairs and a railing, and then levels off on a trail. Total time: 5 to 10 minutes. Once on the beach you will find shade trees, coarse sand and not many people. When the seas are calm the snorkeling is superb but, like most of the Kauai north shore beaches, winter swells are dangerous. Huge waves can literally sweep the beach away.
There are actually two parts to this beach separated by black rocks. In calm water one can swim around the rocks to the right of the first beach. There is a concrete path leading down to this second beach. It originates at the Pali Ke Kua Condominiums but is legally for guests of the condo project only.
Google Maps
7. SeaLodge Beach
Just down the coast from Hideaways is another snorkeling treasure, SeaLodge Beach. Tucked below private homes, including our vacation rental, Honu Point, this small protected beach is not well known. It gets its name from the condominium project on the next point over where the access trail begins. The path, which can be slippery when wet, takes about 15 minutes. Wooden steps were installed years ago to help with the descent but erosion has not been friendly. Once around the point, black rocks take you to the coarse sand. False kamani trees provide much needed shade.
The water is shallow, creating a reef lagoon inside the wave break. Because there is no river nearby, the water is quite clear and the sea life is often abundant. Strong swimmers will go to the edge of the reef and be rewarded with a turtle sighting. Once we found a Hawaiian monk seal sunning on the sand.
Like the other north shore beaches, winter can be unkind to this beach as well. Water from the large swells may engulf the cove all the way to the cliff sweeping the sand out to sea. This doesn’t happen often but if the waves are super large, this is not the time to visit SeaLodge Beach.
Access is from the parking lot of Building A at the SeaLodge Resort. Once in Princeville, turn at Kamehameha Road and drive all the way to the end. For those renting a home on the bluff above the beach, there is an alternate access route that is within walking distance of the homes. Ask the owner or manager of your rental for directions.
Google Maps
8. Anini Beach
This stretch of reef is so long you can find just about anything you desire in a beach. Anini Road parallels the coast with little pockets of sand here and there before reaching the private estates and Beach Park. There are access lanes between some of the homes. Park on the side of the road and walk down the path to the beach. Otherwise keep going until you reach the park. There are plenty of parking spaces here, but with that comes plenty of tourists. There is a boat ramp, bathrooms, and a food truck, as well as small pavilions for get-togethers. Campers with permits set up their tents on the lawn past the boat ramp. During the summer windsurfers abound.
If you continue down Anini Road, past what used to be polo fields on the left and around the point, you’ll come to my favorite part of Anini. Here the road is bumpy, the beach is close and the waves break so far out you can barely see them. The water is super shallow; not a swimming beach. But, the snorkeling is good and if you stay away from the Anini Stream at the end, it is super safe year round. It is a wonderful beach for the keiki (children).
Google Maps
9. Kalihiwai Beach
Kalihiwai Beach is a dream for boogie boarders, swimmers and people who like to play in the waves. This beautiful bay has a sandy bottom and plenty of space for your towels and beach gear. What’s best is there are ironwood trees for shade, and parking under them deposits you right in the sand. The Kalihiwai River opens into the sea at the far west side. One can go quite a ways up the river in a kayak. Combining kayaking and beach time make for a pretty special day. Access is easy on Kalihiwai Road (Kilauea side of the long bridge that crosses the Kilihiwai River) between Kilauea and Princeville.
Google Maps
10. Secret Beach
There are two reasons why not many people make it to Secret Beach. One is that a pretty steep, 15 minute hike, is required to get there, and secondly it has long been a favorite for nude sunbathers. Public nudity is illegal in Hawaii but that doesn’t seem to matter to some sun worshipers. Not as prevalent as it used to be, don’t be surprised if you see someone in their birthday suit.
The reason you might want to go anyway is that this white sand beach is stunningly beautiful with a view of the Kilauea Lighthouse and the bird sanctuary (Moku’ae’ae Island) just off its point. The secluded shoreline is long so chances are you will have a fairly large part of the beach to yourself. The water is pleasant for swimming in the summer but not the winter. To the left from where you enter the beach are the Secret Lava Pools.
To reach Secret Beach, turn onto Kalihiwai Road (Same road that leads to Kalihiwai Beach). Turn right almost immediately onto a dirt road. Park at the end and take the trail down the cliff. Make note of where you enter the beach so that you will be able to spot it later.
Google Maps
How will you choose?
Each of these spectacular beaches has something special to offer. If you must narrow down your choices because you do not have enough time, or because you actually want to see other parts of the island as well, consider these factors:
Time of year - which beaches are safe?
Snorkeling, swimming or boogie boarding/surfing?
Access - easy or difficult?
Shade or no shade?
Parking
Restrooms
Lifeguards
Whichever ones you choose, you are sure to bring back plenty of great photos and happy memories. Enjoy!

#WEARSDANI: Kauai, HI
7-Day Itinerary
*DISCLAIMER: This is my first blog post in a year and I’m a little rusty - the photos I took were (to me) mediocre (I COULD TOTALLY DO BETTER THAN THIS) and I tried my best to condense a week’s worth of activities into a short-attention-span-worthy-read (if such a thing existed). Alright, let’s do this.
Oh Kauai, you stole my heart from day one. Known as the “adventurous” and “lush” island, Kauai differentiates itself from the neighboring Oahu by staying true to its Hawaiian roots - untouched and slowly developed. If you’re planning a trip out here, I’d recommend staying in Kapaa or the south side of the island. My family and I were in Princeville (which is on the northern part of the island) and found ourselves having to drive far for most of the activities and attractions on our list. TBH there was a lot more to our trip than what I’ve mentioned below, but these are what I found most significant. I hope you find this post helpful and enticing enough to have you visit the island yourself!
MONDAY
Arrive at Lihue Airport
To get from airport to timeshare, we booked our ride with GO! Airport Shuttle - the total was $98.70 for four passengers. Overall, the drive from Lihue to Princeville is about 45 minutes and on our way to the timeshare, our driver gave us a little history about Kauai, recommendations on where to go and fun facts about the island.
Wyndham Bali Hai Villas in Princeville
This was one of my favorite timeshares I’ve stayed at. The villas are beautiful, the pool is relaxing and the staff is so welcoming/helpful. I’d say the only downfall is that there wasn’t any air conditioning #firstworldproblems - we had the fans on full blast and left the windows/doors open to feel a breeze.
Foodland
Luckily the Bali Hai Villas offers a full kitchen including all appliances - this means homemade cooking for breakfast, lunch and dinner (Banana Macadamia Pancakes ALL DAY NAMSAYIN?!). Our go-to market is Foodland a.k.a. the Ralph’s or Vons of Hawaii!
TUESDAY
Hanalei
Check out Hanalei for boutique shops and local places to eat like the Village Snack Shop & Bakery at Chung Young Village (Order the chili pepper chicken or combo plate - you won’t regret!) or Jojo’s Shave Ice (Their serving sizes are HUGE and you get a little ice cream treat at the bottom of the cone).
Hanalei Bay
If it weren’t for Google Maps, my family and I would have missed the neighborhood entrance to this beach! We spent the 4th of July here, basking in the liveliness of the area - house music blasting in the background, family and friends chillen beneath the trees and cute grandma’s chattin it up while they tan their leathered skin (lol wait is that mean?)
WEDNESDAY
Poipu Beach
Of all the beaches we visited in Kauai, I’d say that Poipu Beach was the most crowded - but for good reason! This beach is family-friendly and has relatively calm waters. I noticed families snorkeling along the shore and swimming off toward a mini island where you can encounter sunbathing seals.
Lappert’s Ice Cream
I’m a sucker for good ice cream, and Lappert’s satisfied all my creamy needs. I ordered a scoop of Banana Fudge hehe (Ya ya ya, I could have gotten something waaaay more “Hawaiian,” but that’s what my body wanted at the time).
The Shops at Kukui’ula
Various events occur on a weekly basis at the The Shops at Kukui’ula, however we found ourselves in the middle of their culinary market, which happens every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here, you’ll find live music, fresh produce and product from all over the island! The shopping center itself is a great place for tourists to eat, shop and catch Happy Hour (This is where you can find Lappert’s Ice Cream too!).
THURSDAY
Queen’s Bath
Little did I know there was a small trail behind our timeshare that lead to Queen’s Bath. Queen’s Bath is a series of tide pools located along the coast. To get to the bath itself requires a ten-minute hike past a waterfall. The hike was relatively easy and the path down to the bath isn’t very complicated, however I’d suggest wearing water shoes or a sturdy pair of sandals (I wore pair of Havaianas and the strap popped out lol oops – don’t be me). You’ll notice that there are multiple tide pools that you pass, but in order to get to the *actual* Queen’s Bath, you walk about 5 minutes past the lava rocks (You’ll feel like you’re in the middle of a Jurassic Park scene. It’s. So. Dope.). Click this link to get more information on how to explore this area safely.
Koloa Zipline
My sister and I ziplined through the jungle at sunset with Koloa Zipline. There are a total of eight lines that you can fly across, one of them being half a mile long! This was such a fun experience because we got to fly in different positions (upside-down, backwards, “flying Kawaiian”). However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND wearing bug spray and pants (yoga pants will suffice) because holy shit I got bit like crazy. Literally 12 bug bites on one leg, no joke. Also, our travel lady recommended the sunset tour because it would be “pretty and not-as-hot,” but the tour took at least 4 hours and by the time we were halfway through the course, it was completely dark and we couldn’t enjoy the view! Other than that, our experience was A1 and I would totally do it again.
FRIDAY
Kayak Wailua River to Secret Falls
Our vacation was jam packed with adventure (Shout out to my family for keeping up!) We booked a kayak tour with Ali’i Kayaks and spent the whole morning exploring and learning about the Wailua River and hiked to the “Secret Falls.” (Rumor has it, we didn’t go to the *real* Secret Falls - I feel gypped… jk). The distance from the dock to the hike was about two miles and the hike to the waterfall was about one mile. It sounds waaay worse than what it actually is, so just dooo ehhht. Also, shout out to Kai for being such an amazing tour guide! The kid knows his stuff!
Dinner at The Bistro in Kilauea
This was probably the fanciest restaurant we ate at during the whole trip, mainly because our trip consisted of Hawaiian BBQ and homemade meals. Our server was so kind and the food and drinks were delicious!
SATURDAY
Na Pali Coast Tour
This was by-far my favorite activity in Kauai. The Na Pali Coast morning tour was so much fun! We booked our tour with Go Blue Adventure and hung out with our tour guide, Madz all morning! This tour is like no other because you are in a completely open pontoon boat, going hella fast across the ocean (If you have any serious medical/physical issues or can’t handle the waves, maaaybe this tour isn’t for you?) We spotted dolphins (There were sooo many. Fun fact: Dolphins are my spirit animal), swam with the turtles, snorkeled with the fishes, explored sea caves, learned about the history of Kauai and even jumped off the boat with the valleys and mountains as our backdrop. If you find yourself in Kauai, I would definitely mark this tour at the top of your list!
Kauai Coffee Company
In a world full of coffee addicts, I find myself on the other side of the spectrum, but that didn’t stop me from stopping by Kauai Coffee Company. They offer tastings, a roasting demonstration and a walking tour of their estate. While my family enjoyed the variety of coffee flavors, I was in line for another ice cream cone lol, but it was coffee flavored ice cream, so that counts for something, right?
SUNDAY
Anini Beach
One reason why Kauai is so great is because there are so many beaches to choose from. We started off our Sunday morning at Anini Beach. Although there is a only small strip of sand to lay out, this beach offers plenty of shade under the trees and calm waters for everyone to swim safely. My family rolled out our mats and rested beneath the trees and watched locals fishing around the shore.
Kalalau Trail
There are multiple stops on this trail, but my family and I hiked up to the Kalalau Lookout - it took just about 12 minutes to get there. Again, I hiked this trail in my Havaiana’s #rebel, but I recommend closed toe shoes. Just picture a never ending staircase, and that’s exactly what this trail is. The view is totally worth it!
Ke’e Beach
Ahh, I wish my family and I spent more time at this beach. Found at the end of the road, Ke’e Beach is the perfect spot for snorkeling (I realize that all of the beaches I mentioned were great for snorkeling, but this is the “perfect” spot, so go here). On the way to the beach we passed by a massive cave and the trailhead to the Kalalau Lookout! I’d have to say this beach was picturesque and the definition of a tropical oasis.
Kilauea Lighthouse
The Kilauea Lighthouse is also a wildlife refuge that is open from Tuesday to Saturday and requires a $5 entry fee. Unfortunately, we did not know this prior to driving out to the landmark, so we were only able to admire from afar *sigh* but you can view the Lighthouse from afar in my photo diary below :)

6- Santa Cruz (Estados Unidos)
7- Viana do Castelo (Portugal)

Your Special Island? Come See the Beautiful Bali Hai Villa in Hawaii
christiesrealestate.com
The movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein‘s classic “South Pacific” was filmed decades ago. Even if you haven’t seen or heard a note from this tale of love amid the islands, we’ve found a home that will take your breath away.
Bali Hai has a well-deserved reputation as an island paradise. If you’re among the uninitiated, here are a few of the lyrics from the musical’s haunting song “Bali Hai”:
Bali Hai will whisper On the wind of the sea: Here am I, your special island! Come to me, come to me!
But that lush movie locale required real-life inspiration. And now that Hanalei‘s unique Bali Hai Villa is on the market for $14.9 million, the special island setting could become a reality for a deep-pocketed buyer. This unique property is adjacent to where the movie was filmed and has a breathtaking, unobstructed view of Makana Mountain—the landmark green slopes that stood in for Bali Hai in the film.
A view of the real Bali Hai

The 3.71-acre parcel includes “one of the best beaches anywhere on the planet,” says listing broker Matt Beall of Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers, Christie’s International Real Estate. He says the beach is unrivaled for its fine white sand; the warm, crystal-clear water; and the numerous beach and ocean activities available.

And then there’s the villa itself: Built in 1983, the 10-bedroom, 11.5-bath home is designed in classic Hawaiian style, with plenty of bamboo and teak, skylights, ceiling fans, and sunset views—many of them visible from built-in window seats.

“It was clearly built for entertainment,” says Beall. During the open house for brokers, he adds, many people brought their children, and a soccer game ensued on the massive lawn.

And for those who can’t head home on the Kuhio Highway after a raucous party, there’s a three-bedroom cottage on the premises they can crash in.
The property is surrounded by stunning mountains and spectacular waterfalls, all within short hiking distance. It’s no wonder songs have been written about it.
“This property is ideal for someone who has a true appreciation for Hawaii and the lifestyle,” says Beall. Its location “at the end of the road on the North Shore of Hawaii” is ideal for someone who craves privacy.
It’s about 15 minutes from the center of Hanalei, which is less than one square mile in size and has a population of about 450.
“It’s so perfectly situated for the sea, the sun, the wind, the beach, the views. It’s one of the most spectacular properties in the state,” says Beall.

Kauai trip 2022!
Friday, April 15 - arrival
◦ Got rental car-convertible. We got the rental car on points and so we just spent the rest of the points to spring for the convertible. When we first got it, we realized that there was very little trunk space when you want to put the top down which was a little concerning because I packed way too many clothes anticipating potential cold. But top down is worth it! ◦ We were a little afraid of how much the weather report said it was going to rain because most of the things we wanted to do were outside. On the drive in there was also a really bad car crash so we sat two hours in traffic but then got to Bali Hai in Princeville which I think is my first Hawaii resort experience though we booked through Airbnb (or did we…I truly think these sites are now all shadow organizations posing as real people) ◦ On the drive we stopped in Ka'apa to get some food at food trucks - first poke bowl of the trip at a food truck that just opened called Tony's ◦ After showering and getting aquatinted with the hotel, we went to Hanalei to check it out and get a lay of the land. Because it was grey, Hanalei Bay was basically deserted. We figured out which parking lots we liked which, you know, is really important to me ◦ Then we walked into town and rented chairs and boogie boards for the next day and went to big save to get some snacks and food for the night. We tried to get snorkel stuff but they said they were out so we had to come back tomorrow ◦ We pre chose Atlanta as our show of the trip and so evenings were spent winding down and watching on the Apple TV. Its important to plan your TV

This morning after breakfast we headed north to Hanalei. Peaceful and quiet, Hanalei town is one of my favorites, a “hippie” and surfer mecca. It is nestled between the jagged Wainiha Mountains and the ocean. Early in 2018, flooding in the North Shore wipedout the road pastHanalei. In June we went to see how far we could get, and it was just past the historic and well-preserved Wai’loi Hui’la Church. Today we were able to drive about a quarter of a mile farther before we were stopped and told to turn around. That means Tunnels Beach and Ke’e Beach are unavailable as are the Limahuli National Botanical Tropical Gardens.
The Wai’oli Church on the west side of town has a record of service since 1834, first as a Congregational Church, and since 1957, as a United Church of Christ. The interior is lovely with beautiful stained glass windows.
If you don’t remember, Hanalei is home to “Puff the Magic Dragon,” who “frolicked in the ocean waves in a land called Hanalei.” The center of Hanalei Town features several historic buildings, which now house the town’s many shops and restaurants. There arenumerous art galleries and boutiques, surf shops, bikini shops, and a multitude of restaurants.
The crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay is one of Hawaii’s most scenic and pleasant beaches, set beneath a range of monumental mountain peaks directly inland from the bay. The view to the west takes in the precipitous Wainiha mountain range, and in the distance is the peak of Makana, known by many as Bali Hai from the 1957 movie South Pacific.
The historic Hanalei Pier was built in 1892 and has long been a favorite gathering place for local residents, who go there to fish, swim, and play music on Hanalei Bay.
West of Hanalei on the way to Ke’e Beach (where we couldn’t go today) is a large cave, the Manini-holo cave, which goes back about 100-150 feet with plenty of standing room. We told the grandkids that that was Puff’s cave. However, legend has it that this cave used to be a tunnel to Waimea Canyon, and that during a conflict between the Menehune and the Polynesian settlers, the Menehune were on the run from Waimea Canyon, being pursued by the Polynesians and used this secret tunnel to escape to the North Shore. After they were all through the tunnel, they created a collapse at the tunnel ceiling, trapping the Polynesians inside and leading to the formation of the dry cave.
The Menehune are a dwarf people in Hawaiian tradition who live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. The Menehune were said to be superb craftspeople. Legends say that the Menehune built temples, fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. They are said to be the first people in the Islands.

Sunset Cart Tour at the Princeville Golf Course - Kauai, Hawaii
Here's a unique way to watch the sunset! On the Sunset Cart Tour you will drive around the beautiful Princeville Golf Course on one of their cushy golf carts capturing incredible photos from various stops along the 18 hole Makai course. The best part is that you don't have to be a golfer! And, no reservations are needed so you can wait until you are pretty sure the weather is going to cooperate.
Two hours before the sunset, people start gathering at the Princeville Golf Shop. First stop is the Makai Grill where guests order a few refreshing beverages, at Happy Hour pricing, to fill their on-cart ice chests. Then the carts are doled out and and guests jump into their designated cart for the one and a half hour late afternoon experience.
The line of carts, led by a Princeville Golf Course pro or employee, meander through the course, designed by Mr. Robert Trent Jones Jr., on smooth paths, stopping at five especially scenic spots. The guides (Tom, Randy or Andrew) talk story about the north shore flora and fauna, including the many different kinds of sea birds soaring over the ocean. Queen’s Bath, The Kilauea Lighthouse, Puff the Magic Dragon, Anini Reef, numerous North Shore beaches including Secrets, Lumahai, Haena, Anini, Hideaway, Waikoko and Hanalei Bay will be pointed out along the way. The Hawaiian state bird, Nene, and the seasonal Laysan albatross with their chicks, are extra, visual treats to see on the golf course. Photo opportunities abound.
As sunset nears, the last stop is at Hole 7 where many months out of the year guests will watch as the sun sinks directly into the Pacific Ocean with a view of Makana Mountain, better known as Bali Hai. If one is lucky enough to have a clear horizon, a green flash is even possible!
Here is what one couple had to say about the Sunset Cart Tour:
Others have offered their reviews of the Sunset Cart Tour on Yelp. Here are three examples:
"Pristine course! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We did the Sunset Cart Tour, and it was delightful. We learned plenty about the area and got to take in all of the breathtaking views."

"We did the sunset golf cart tour with Tom. He was a fantastic and knowledgeable guide. He also had everyone's name in the group memorized before we set out! This is $60 well spent. Gorgeous views, fun drive in comfortable carts. And you can grab a drink before you get going. Perfect for all abilities. Beautiful course. Tom will teach you island lore, botanical facts, and even take photos for you. Highly recommended."
Thursday D. October 4, 2018
"My husband and I did a sunset golf cart tour here. The tour was awesome - golf cart was comfortable and modern, tour guide was friendly and funny (Andrew), and the views were awesome.
We did not play golf on the course, but my husband is a golfer. He thought the course was very well maintained!
I highly suggest the sunset golf cart tour. You get beautiful views from the comfort of the golf cart, and there are numerous stops along the way to really take in the view!"
