Mangaka Spotlight- Natsuki Takaya
Most known for creating Fruits Basket, Natsuki inadvertently pioneered the shojo Manga genre. I wanted to take this opportunity to share more about the artist, rather than their art. I think the world over has taken notice and understands her artwork, but not much is known about her. And maybe that's by design, I respect that. Still, I'd like to share the readily available information about her. with artists, or people that are not aware of her as a person.
Takaya was born July 7th, 1973, in Shizuoka, Japan. The year of the OX! Her real name is Hana Hatate, but I'll continue with her pen name. Although she was born in Shizuoka, she was raised in Tokyo. She wanted to become a Mangaka as early as first grade when her older sister took up art. Her sister's influence proved successful because right after high school, she would make her debut as an Artist.
From my research, aside from drawing, Takaya also enjoyed playing video games. Such as Sakura Wars and the Final Fantasy series.
In 1992, at 18 years old, Takaya entered the professional mangaka scene working with the magazine called Hana to Yume Planet Zōkan magazine. Two years later, in the same magazine, she would create her first serilized story, Phantom Dream, from 1994 to 1997.
Phantom Dream 1994-1997
The insane thing is, during the production of Phantom Dream, she also worked on her second serialized Manga, Tsubasa: Those With Wings from 1995 to 1998. Let's just take a moment to admire all the hard work Takaya put in. This woman's career snowballed since 18 years old, and boy, that type of dedication is rare to see!
Tusbasa: Those With Wings 1995-1998
Her third series would begin in 1999 with her magnum opus, Fruits Basket, and conclude in 2006.
Some things to note about the creation of FURBA. Her interest in the Zodiac came from a dictionary she was reading that referenced the Zodiac animals. Takaya also stated in interviews that the story of FURBA was the story she intended to tell through the entire process of production. That's so amazing!
Around volume 6 in the series, Takaya suffered an injury to her left hand (her drawing hand) that required surgery. Resulting in a brief hiatus. I could not find an explanation on how she injured herself, but I suspect it was a case of carpal tunnel, a common injury for artists.
In 2001, Furba went on to win the Kodansha Manga Award for best Shojo Manga. In the same year, Furba got its first Anime adaption, which was later rebooted in 2019. The series easily became the best-selling Shojo series in North America.
Fruits Basket 1999- 2001
In between creating Furba, Takaya also created Songs to Make You Smile which was around 1998. It's a collection of short stories that were published in one volume in 1999.
It seemed after Furba, she took a well-deserved break before creating another series, Twinkle Stars, in 2007, which ended in 2011.
Songs to Make You Smile 1998-1999 (left)
Twinkle Stars 2007-2011 (right)
The following series was interesting to look up. In 2011 Liselotte and Witch's Forest was published, but around 2013 Takaya put the series on a hiatus due to an unknown illness. To this day, the story is put on hold. However, Takaya stated she would finish the series little by little.
The last few works, I'll bunch together, as most of them are similar. Fruits Basket Another was created by Tanaka to advertise the original Fruba series. And Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc 1 & 2 is a spin-off series with 6 chapters available. These seem to be digitally exclusive, and most likely just for fun.
Fruits Basket Another 2017-2020
Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers 2019-Present
Ironically, I mentioned at the beginning I wanted to focus on the artists, rather than their art. But in researching Takaya much of her personal life is kept private. I believe from what I see, her Manga was her life. And it's through her work we learn the type of person she is.
I hope that whatever her current situation is, she is healthy and proud of all her accomplishments. I'm in awe of the amount of work experience she has created for herself at just the age of 48.
Natsuki Takaya, you will always remain an inspiration to many readers and artists alike. I can't wait to see what you accomplish next!

Amazon's comics rankings are distributed weekly (from Sunday to Saturday) in cooperation with Amazon. This time, the rankings will be delivered from September 15th to September 21st.
"The fifth bride" is the top! "Dungeon rice" is again ...!
This week's number one is “The Bride for Five”, Volume 11. A spring comedy that has been serialized in “Weekly Shonen Magazine” since 2017. TV animation started in January 2019, and the second stage production has also been decided, and a hot eye is being poured.
The second place was “Dungeon Rice” 8 volumes. Gourmet fantasy manga that breaks through dungeons while cooking monsters appearing in fantasy works using existing cooking methods. From the 4th week of August, it has been keeping the ranking within 3rd for about 1 month. I want to pay attention to how far the ranking can be maintained.
The third place is “Kaguya-sama wants to tell ~ genius' love brain war ~” 16 volumes. This is a TV anime broadcast from January 2019. A live-action movie starring Murasaki Hirano and Kanna Hashimoto has been released since September 6, 2019.

Yona ch.145 spoilers
Akatsuki no Yona chapter 145 “What is right” summary
Please don’t repost/reuse my scans and translations without permission. Tumblr reblog is fine.
Shin-Ah collapses on Yona from the paralysis. His body feels heavy, but he’s fine. Yoon comes with Zeno and Kija. Kija is happy Yona is fine, but it’s Yona who worries for him instead: he’s all bloody. Yoon says they’ve been healing real slow, maybe it’s because they’re too far from Hiryuu Castle. Zeno, who was previously helping Kija walk, tries to carry/support Shin-Ah but his “old body” can’t take it. Jae-Ha says he should let Hak do it, then notices injured Hak on the ground. He calls for Yoon, who starts accusing him of carelessness while half-crying ^^;
In a dark alley, the assassins are discussing Shin-Ah’s powers. This man was definitely not human, it looked like a dragon. Could he be one of those monsters from Kouka? They’ve got to tell Gobi about it.
Back to Yona’s group. Kouren is injured from an arrow that grazed her arm. Yoon insists to treat her, and the princess asks why he would help his enemy. Yoon says it’s because he doesn’t want to lose to war and to violence. Healing isn’t about allies or enemies.
Kouren then comments about the 4 dragons’ god-like powers.
Kouren (to Yona): With that kind of power, have you ever thought about taking revenge on Soo-Won?
Yona: The 4 dragons aren’t instruments for settling my personal grudges.
Kouren: Do you have a personal grudge, then?
Yona: ...I... don’t know about that.
The reason she didn’t throw away Soo-Won’s hairpin was because she didn’t want to forget what happened on that fateful night. Or that’s what she told herself at first, but now she knows she was still trying to hold on a reason to trust him as well. And she’s gotten rid of that hairpin now. She tells Kouren she can’t easily forgive him for what happened, but she doesn’t want to live trapped in that moment either.
Then they discuss the upcoming negotiations with Soo-Won: both Tao and Kouren must attend and there will be other conditions, but if they accept he guarantees there will be no bloodshed between Kouka and Shin. It may be difficult for them to agree to it, but Yona insists that if Soo-Won was like his father and intended to enslave their people, he wouldn’t have made such a promise from the start. Yona thinks he wouldn’t do anything so meaningless, and she still believes in that part of him.
Hak is listening to the conversation, staying silent all the time. He too believes Soo-Won wouldn’t do meaningless things. He doesn’t know why the princess decided to let go of the hairpin, but he understands she’s decided to face him head-on from now on, without fear or hatred. Would Hak be able to do that as well?
Kouren is still uneasy about facing Kouka’s king, that man’s son... She remembers what Neguro told her about how the heavens will favor their country if she leads it along with the 5 Stars’ help, when she was desperate and wanted to take revenge on Kouka. She promises him she won’t forget the despair and humiliation she felt back then.
The enemy stopped attacking. Before the group starts moving to safety, Kouren wishes to apologizes to them for using them as hostages. Tao comes and helps her walk. That way, the enemy won’t be able to shoot at Kouren so easily. Tao never thought Gobi would resort to killing Neguro when she decided to distance herself from him. She’s crying, afraid that she might come to hate him and lose her faith in humanity. That’s why he must be stopped at all costs.
Yoon asks if someone’s seen Mizari. He tells them he also ran away from his cell but was struck by an arrow, and we can see he’s worried for him. Jae-Ha adds they don’t fully grasp the situation yet (they were locked in a cell all this time): wasn’t the anti-war faction Tao’s ally? Voldo explains it’s a bit more complicated than that. Kouren prays Mizari and Yotaka will stay safe.
At the military camp, Yotaka can feel the anxiety in the air and wonders if it’s only caused by the upcoming war. He asks General Namsek (ナムセク) how the soldiers are doing. He says they’re fine and scolds him for showing his nervousness because it will affect the troops’ morale. A soldier comes and tells Yotaka Gobi is up to something. We see the priest answering the questions of worried citizens, telling them that yes, Kouren intends to use her people to shield her during the war and that divine princess Tao will bring peace. The citizens say she shouldn’t sell the country like that, given what Kouka did to them in the past. Gobi tells them it’ll be fine, the gods have spoken: if Soo-Won and Tao marry, both countries will prosper in harmony. Yotaka understands it would be the perfect chance for Gobi Jeanne D’Arc to seize power as a prime minister and smirks.
Author note: The other day I went to Fukuoka, and the shops around the station were all selling tasty-looking food, I couldn’t resist!
A woman says they still have the 5 Stars, but Gobi says they won’t protect them and they shall be punished by the heavens as criminals who brought upon war.
Just as Yotaka steps forward to argue with Gobi, he gets stabbed in the back from an anti-war faction soldier. The soldier says this is divine retribution for Mizari injuring his best friend who can no longer work and turned to the gods. The soldiers and citizens don’t want to die for this war, and Gobi said the war will be avoided if they bring him the 5 Stars’ heads.
Yotaka apologizes for not being able to stop Mizari. However, if the soldiers intend to take Kouren’s life, as a member of the 5 Stars, he will not hesitate.
Gobi comes and laughs at him, for what can he hope to achieve with no weapon and an injury? He tells him it’s futile to resist, for Yotaka is the only 5 Stars still alive. He adds Neguro met a fitting end as head of the 6 Stars. Yotaka gets angry and starts yelling, but the scene switches to the Wind tribe’s side of the camp.
Han-Dae tries to catch Tae-Woo’s attention by calling him various names until he reacts to “tiny small youngster”. He wants to know if the general has heard news from Hak and where he went. Tae-Woo says he doesn’t know and leaves, remembering what Hak told him earlier about leaving the Wind tribe in his care. He wonders if that means Hak won’t be coming back to the Wind tribe anymore, and doesn’t know what to do about the war: when the Sky tribe comes, will he have to lead the Wind tribe to the battlefield, even if it means they might have to fight against Hak?
Wandering around lost in his thoughts, he comes close to the Shin side of the camp and sees an angry injured Yotaka facing Gobi. He remembers Yotaka as the guy who was arguing with Hak’s friend (Voldo), and hears Gobi say dawn will break soon and for that new morning to be a peaceful one, Kouren and the 5 Stars have to die.
As Gobi’s assassins are about to strike him, Tae-Woo throws his spear in between them and asks the “bigwigs from Shin” to let him join their conversation.
Hisa’s thoughts on the chapter:
Most of what was discussed in the chapter, we already knew, so I’ll focus on the parts that are probably going to matter in the next chapters.
Even after Yona’s talk of how she won’t let her resentment towards Soo-Won cloud her judgment and use the dragons for herself, Kouren is still trapped in the past and promises Neguro she will never forget about how they all felt when Kouka crushed them 17 years ago. I’m not sure what she really meant: is she promising Neguro she won’t forget even if she chooses to make peace with Kouka, or is it a plain rejection of the negotiations talks because they once agreed to give everything they had to get their revenge on Kouka? She’s the key to the negotiations, and given her personality, I’m afraid she might ditch the meeting if people are pressuring her to go too much.
Then we have Hak who finally gives us hindsight of what he thinks about Soo-Won. Kind of. As we could guess, he’s still angry with him and wonders if he’ll be able to remain calm during the meeting. It’s nice to know his opinion once in a while, as he tends to keep everything to himself.
Next there’s Gobi Jeanne D’Arc, who allegedly heard from the gods that everything will be alright if Tao marries Soo-Won. I’m pretty sure he’s using this excuse to manipulate Tao and the citizens, but it sounds very similar to Kouka’s situation with the priests when Joo-Nam was still king. Can Gobi really hear the gods? Will he try to manipulate Soo-Won using the gods too? (well good luck with that).
Finally we have Tae-Woo, still struggling with his new duties as general and finally accepting that no, Hak will not take back his former position. Now that he’s come to terms with being the true leader, he wants to do what is right for his tribe. And it looks like he’s chosen to get involved with the enemy’s business, risking to pass as a traitor if Soo-Won’s troops find him on the Shin side of the camp.

I read you are getting the new AnY fanbook! I received mine today and it is beautiful! I like everything Yona related. But I really liked the book. I still don’t understand the whole thing, since I’ve been only studying japanese for a year. But someday I will! You were the reason I find the courage to start studying this amazing language so thanks a lot!!!!! And I wanted to ask you since you usually know all the kind of info. How many AnY artbooks exists? I want to try and find one
Thank you! Reading your message makes me very happy
I’ll take this opportunity to answer about all Kusanagi artbooks and not necessarily only the AnY ones, since I’ve been asked this often in private asks and never took the chance to post everything on this blog.
There are only 3 books that are officially labeled as “artbooks” or “illustration books”, but I believe anything with a significant amount of color illustrations can be counted as an “artbook” too.
0. Self-published (doujinshi) fanart artbook - August 18th, 2007
This doujin artbook was published under Kusanagi’s pseudonym Keika and contains color fanarts from the following series: Detective Conan, One Piece, The 12 Kingdoms and Laputa the Castle in the Sky. You can find more information and a few scans on my doujin blog.
1. NG Life booklets for signing events (Yokohama, then Fukuoka on June 28th, 2009)
The first illustration book Kusanagi ever released about one of her professional works was a mini NG Life artbook she made (and printed herself, I believe) for an autograph session in Yokohama. She mentions it on her blog but doesn’t give a specific date for the event (it happened before she opened her blog). She mentions making another booklet with rough pencil sketches for the June 28th autograph session in Fukuoka. The post she made about it has a picture of sketches that weren’t included in the booklet. Both booklets are extremely rare and I couldn’t find any information about them apart from what Kusanagi has written on her blog. I believe, though I have no proof, that some of the sketches on her webclap are from those booklets.
2. First Collection artbook - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2014
This artbook was included as a gift in the 3/1 2014 issue of The Hana to Yume magazine. It includes color illustrations from the series Mugen Spiral, Yoiko no Kokoroe, NG Life, Game x Rush and Akatsuki no Yona. They’re mostly clean versions of titles pages published in Hana to Yume magazine, and there are also a clean cover illustration as well as a calendar illustration. A preview of the artbook can be seen here.
3. Mini AnY fanbook - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2015
This AnY fanbook has information about the characters and reprints of some anime key illustrations, manga title pages, twitter sketches and fanart by Berserk mangaka Kentaro Miura. I’ve posted complete scans on this blog.
4. AnY postcard book - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2016
The freebie has 8 postcards made from clean reprints of cover and title page illustrations from both Hana to Yume and The Hana to Yume magazines. I’ve scanned them all: first part & second part.
5. AnY sketchbook - freebie from Hana to Yume issue 8/2016
It has 7 pages of exclusive color illustrations, 5 pages of promotional B&W illustrations/comics reprints and 4 pages of pencil sketches of the cast as baseball players. I’ve scanned it in two parts.
6. AnY “Secret sketchbook” - included in the limited edition of volume 20, out on March 18th, 2016
This sketchbook has 5 pages of color illustrations, 46 pages of rough pencil sketches from Kusanagi’s twitter or blog (including new ones) and 2 pages of promotional B&W illustrations reprints. I haven’t scanned it yet.
7. AnY message cards collection - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2017
This mini booklet has 4 postcards made from title page illustrations, with chibi characters at the back. They’re not clean art but all include friendly messages. You can see preview pictures here.
8. AnY illustrations - included in the limited edition of volume 23, out on April 20th, 2017
This artbook has 58 pages of AnY color illustrations, including title pages, volume and magazine covers, promotional art, calendar and freebie illustrations, and bluray covers & postcards. I’ve posted a complete preview here.
9. AnY rough sketch collection - lottery prize in Hana to Yume magazine issue 18/2017
There isn’t much information about this lottery prize. It’s a B5 booklet that has rough pen(cil) sketches inside. Kusanagi tweeted about it and posted its cover. According to the magazine, it has 30 pages of preparatory sketches for the Xing arc chapters (including failed sketches of color illustrations) and 2 pages of bonus comic pages.
10. Debut 15th anniversary artbook - freebie from Hana to Yume issue 12/2018
It has 26 pages of color illustrations from the following series: Akatsuki no Yona, Yoiko no Kokoroe, NG Life and Boku no Kotori-san. They’re clean illustrations from title pages, magazine and manga volume or sketchbook cover art, freebie art (calendars, clear files) and twitter art. I’ve scanned it here: part 1 - part 2 - part 3.
11. AnY fanbook - out on November 20th, 2018
The fanbook includes 16 pages of color illustrations from Kusanagi’s twitter or blog (birthday illustrations mostly), special events (signing sessions, AnY cafe, bookstore promotional art) and magazine exclusive art like New Year cards or lottery shikishi prizes. It also has 6 pages of rough pencil sketches, new 4koma shorts, reprints of B&W promotional art, and 2 new bonus short comics. I haven’t scanned them yet but you can find a translation of the table of contents here.
I haven’t mentioned the B&W doujinshi compilations of rough sketches Kusanagi drew for her favorite series under her doujinka pseudonyms. You’ll find more information about them here & here on my doujin blog.
