1/13 — “Hammer Attack” by Han Ong

This story snuck up on me a little. Builds itself up out of the premise of a group of Asian Americans who are in a book club together, after one of them got attacked and is now in the hospital. After the last couple of stories (Lethem, Ernaux) I’ve read in The New Yorker, apparently been thinking a lot about where each of these get their inspiration, their jumping off point. Ong’s story is inspired by and in response to these hate crime attacks and what it would feel like to be afraid to walk through your own city and also the impact of watching, on the news and social media, the attack of one of your friends. 

The attackee, Allen, is in a coma for the entirety of the story, while also being at its center — the other characters orbit around his absence, and we learn about both Allen and these book club characters, by what they tell us about him.

Allen was, in some ways, a kindred spirit. His one-word self-description, at our first book-group gathering, was “lapsed.” What did he mean? You name it, I’ve lapsed. To much laughter, he enumerated: lapsed Christian, lapsed Korean, lapsed middle-class person, lapsed heterosexual. He was an unusual gay man, but maybe I was relying on stereotypes: he was young but chubby, unstylish, unprepossessing in appearance and manner. He wasn’t the most talkative of the bunch of us, and he had a fondness for upspeak, like a teen-ager.

Lcf English Translation Cover Ideas

So as of right now there is no official cover released for the lcf English translation. Both volume one and two are listed with either the placeholder cover or no cover at all. So here are my theories/opinions on what it will be. These will be scenes from the first 100 chapters that I think are cover worthy for volume one. These are in order of the chapters they appear, not my personal preference.

1. "Are you hungry?"

The first time Cale met Choi Han. Bonus points for Ong and Hong being there too. It's were it all began, it's essentially where his entire journey started. Yes it is only 6 chapters into the book but it is iconic nonetheless. It would make a great book cover for the start of the series.

2. Saving of Raon

Again, wonderful scene from the volume, this time 20 chapters in. This can actually translate into multiple different covers for example, one with Raon looking up into the sky in wonder (poor babyyy) or when Cale drizzles the potion on him or cuts the collar. This would feel less impactful than #1 though so, who knows

3. Obviously the explosion at the square

While the other ideas on this list are good, I don't think any can top this. It happens about 50 chapters into the volume. And it is the scene. I don't think I need to make any more points after this one. This is the first time we ever get the see the silver shield in use. This is where Cale gets his nickname. It is the scene of the volume. I like the other ideas but I will be sad if it isn't this one

Ok I wasn't being serious earlier but now I am, I don't think anything can be as grand as these three. The whole whirlpool and whales and stuff is cool, I just don't really think it's cover worthy content.
