Hamilton Pulsar LED 1972
Tumblr media
The world’s first LED/digital watch. Originally designed for Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, it was shown as a prototype on The Tonight Show in 1970 and was finally released April 4th, 1972. Would put you back $2100. To put that in perspective, the median household income in America in 1972 was $11,116. (In today’s money, it’s about $13,700.)
Not exactly the same watch, but Roger Moore did wear one (Hamilton Pulsar P2) in the 1973′s James Bond film, “Live and Let Die”. This is a cool video to show how to change the time with the magnet hidden in the band clasp. (And keep in mind, it doesn’t seem like it now, but pushing the button on the side to reveal the digital time was kinda mind-blowing for the time. No pun.)

Would Mark Harmon wear it? Maybe ironically. Lol!

'Filmmaker Christopher Nolan had specifically requested that actors in his movie 'Oppenheimer' wear glow-in-the-dark watches. These watches primarily work because of the presence of radium, which causes the dials to glow. In his newly released film 'Oppenheimer', Nolan used such watches to depict the vintage era between the 1920s and 1960s.
However, it's important to look beyond the surface. In the 1900s, many women involved in making radium watches suffered serious health consequences, including cancer. These women, known as "Radium Girls," were exposed to cancer-causing radioactivity due to their work.
The "Radium Girls" faced severe consequences, including death, as the harmful effects of radium and the need for protective gear were not known at the time.
Nolan has a known obsession with watch faces, and 'Oppenheimer' is no exception. The actors in the film, including Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt, wore Hamilton watches, most of which had glow-in-the-dark dials made using radium.
The vintage Hamilton Cushion B watches also had glow-in-the-dark dials made with radium, but the workers involved in manufacturing these watches suffered severe health issues due to radium exposure.
During that era, women who hand-painted radium watches and dials, unknowingly ingested radium while working which led to deadly diseases and even their deaths. Eventually, legal action was taken and radium was banned from use in watches. Hamilton continued to use radium in its watches until 1963 when the United States banned its use in consumer products.
Coincidentally, radium was banned from consumer products just a year after J. Robert Oppenheimer's demise.
While Oppenheimer may be gone, his creations and radioactive materials remain. Caution with radioactive antiques is now essential to prevent people from deadly consequences, such as radiation. Experts recommend against using any radioactive antiques without proper protective gear. Radium remains dangerous even today and can have severe effects on a person's health due to radiation exposure.
For the unversed, J. Robert Oppenheimer is popularly known as the father of the atomic bomb and Nolan's latest film is about him.'
